Chapter 3
Eddie was on his way to his ultrasound appointment, and he wanted to throw up. He wasn’t sure if it was because he was just nauseous anyways or if it was because he was nervous about what this appointment meant. Either way, he felt like he was going to puke.
When he pulled up to the clinic, he parked the truck that he had been renting while he was out there and took a few deep steady breaths before climbing out. He made his way inside and checked in with the receptionist before making his way to the waiting room to sit in one of the uncomfortable chairs.
It took about fifteen minutes before he was called back. “Edmundo Diaz?” The nurse called out as she scanned the waiting room. Eddie sighed softly and stood from his seat, following the nurse into the room. He was instructed to lay down and pull his shirt up enough for the doctor to do what she had to do.
When the doctor pressed the wand against the man’s belly it was instantly confirmed. On the little sonogram screen was what looked like a blob, but Eddie knew it was a baby from seeing Shannon’s ultrasounds when she was pregnant with Christopher. That was enough to make Eddie lean over the bed and get sick.
---
Later that day, Buck face timed Eddie to check on him. “Are you still sick?” He asks, propping his phone up as he moved around his kitchen, it looked like he was making dinner. At Eddie’s nod Buck continues. “I still think you should go to the doctor.”
“I did.” Eddie says as he set his phone down so Buck couldn’t see his face anymore. He should tell him; he was going to tell him before the man spoke up again. “Actually, I wanted to tell you about the appointment-“
“Oh sorry.” Buck says as there was a knock on his door. He threw the dishtowel over his shoulder and looked at the phone. “I gotta go, my dates here early.” He tells him and Eddie’s face falls. “You’re not dying though, right?”
“No Buck, I’m not dying. Have fun with your date.” Eddie says before hanging up, setting his phone on the coffee table. He just stares at the wall for a moment. He didn’t know why he thought that night meant something to Buck, it meant everything to himself. He expected Buck to wait for him, that they would talk about what it meant when they got back but he was wrong, it was just a hook up to him and he guesses he’ll just take what he can get.
---
The weeks went by quickly and now he had been in El Paso for two and a half months, meaning he was also two and a half months pregnant. The man had thought about termination, not even knowing if he wanted another kid but he couldn’t do that.
Eddie still needed to tell Buck because this baby was without a doubt his, he hadn’t slept with another man besides his best friend, so it was obvious. He had plenty of chances to tell the man, but he couldn’t, not when it broke his heart that Buck was going on dates. He also needed to tell Christopher, and he was not looking forward to that conversation.
“I need to talk to you about something important.” Eddie says one night when Christopher is over for dinner. They were playing video games together, but Eddie sets his controller down and turns so he was facing the teen. Christopher does the same and sighs heavily, gesturing for the man to go on. “I don’t even know how to explain this.” Eddie laughs nervously and rubs a hand over his face.
“You’re scaring me dad. Do you have cancer or something? Is it Buck?” The boy’s eyes widened at the very thought that something had happened to Buck.
Eddie shakes his head immediately. “Buck’s fine Mijo and I don’t have cancer.” Eddie fidgets with his hands for a moment before speaking again. “You’re going to have a brother or a sister.”
Chris’ eyes nearly bulge out of his head, scooting further away from the man. “You got her pregnant?!” He exclaims, going to stand up but Eddie stopped him. He knew he was going to assume that Eddie had gotten someone pregnant.
“No, actually I’m the one that’s pregnant.” Eddie sighs, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t want to get into the details or anything but I’m sure you’ve heard about carriers before, yeah?”
Christopher is speechless, not moving from his seat on the couch as he looks at Eddie like he had just grown a second head. “Yeah. I didn’t know you were a carrier though; I thought you would have told me.” Christopher frowns.
“I didn’t know either Chris. I thought I was sick so went to the doctor and it turns out it was just morning sickness.” Eddie explains it to him and the boy nods before asking who the other dad was. And Eddie wanted to puke, he didn’t want his son to hate him even more than he did. “Buck is the other dad.”
“Oh.” Chris says calmly, carefully choosing his next words. “Well, that tracks.” He mumbles.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Eddie raises an eyebrow at his. He expected the boy to blow up, not be so calm about this.
“Nothing.” Chris waves him off. “Can we go back to playing video games now?”
“I suppose. But you can’t tell anyone, alright? I’m not ready for anyone to know yet. I wanted to tell you first because it affects you a lot. I haven’t even told Buck.”
Christopher just nods at that and goes back to his video game. Eddie supposes that the conversation couldn’t have gone better so that was a win in his book. His next battle was to figure out how to tell Buck.
