Kim Namjoon and McGonagall Matchday
“IT’S A LOVELY MARCH 1ST, A GREAT DAY FOR A QUIDDITCH MATCH!” Jin’s voice booms over the pitch. “IT’S A HIGHLY ANTICIPATED MATCH TODAY, WITH GRYFFINDOR VS. HUFFLEPUFF! SOME PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR ARE STAR FIRST YEAR SEEKER, JEON JUNGKOOK, AND CAPTAIN CHASER JUNG HOSEOK! THIS IS A MATCH FOR THE BOOKS!”
Namjoon smiled at his friend-not-quite-boyfriend-but-more-than-friend’s voice. He was seated in the stands with the teachers, waiting for Jin to finish and sit by him. It was fairly warm out today, no need for a winter jacket. Only a hat and a scarf, which was strangely odd for early spring. The muggles were predicting a warm-front in a week, possible storms, so they moved the Quidditch game up a weekend.
The referee released the balls and snitch, and the game started. Hoseok immediately swooped down, snatching the quaffle and speeding towards the Gryffindor goal post. This match would be a race between Jungkook and Hoseok. Either the snitch was caught or Hoseok made 150 points. There were no other options. The crowd knew it too, because the energy was electric. Namjoon almost wished he was with the other students, just to feel it, but he knew it’d be worth it when Jin looked at him.
Ever since the dance, Namjoon had been on cloud nine. His life was great. He knew his best friend was alive, he had a plan to stop the killer, and his crush was recognizing him as a potential boyfriend. Of course, there were still a fair share of problems, but for the most part Namjoon was content.
Namjoon could see one of those aforementioned problems from his seat. Jimin was sitting in the Gryffindor section, a blue scarf wrapped around his small frame. Taemin was sitting next to him, passively watching the game in front of them. Namjoon saw Jimin’s eyes follow Jungkook’s broom with a sad glint in them, and he couldn’t help but feel bad for the boy. Jimin was just human after all, and he’d gotten lost talking to a boy. Namjoon understood that. It was just that Jimin chose the wrong boy, and then followed him. Jimin hadn’t spoken to them since Valentine’s night. That was over half a month ago. It was quiet without him, and Namjoon knew Jungkook was lonely. He’d lost both Jimin and Tae. The poor thing was quieter than ever, and he had resorted to hanging out with his roommates.
But, at minimum, there had been no more murders or break-ins. Hogwarts was silent. The aurors had slowly started leaving, and the Daily Prophet was turning its attention away. The murderer was keeping a low profile, letting the dust settle before their next attack. No doubt, outside the walls, Death Eaters were gathering en masse. Namjoon could only hope they find the Resurrection Stone soon.
Speaking of which, he wasn’t actually sitting with the teachers just for Jin. He had a mission. The Headmistress.
He saw her sitting two rows over, and after Hoseok scored his first goal, Namjoon made his move. He held his popcorn package and walked the long way around the seats, making his way to walk down the stairs behind her. As soon as he got closer, he dropped the bag and made a scene, gasping and frantically picking them up by hand.
Just like he knew she would, the Headmistress waved her wand and all the kernels floated back into his bag.
“There you go Mr.Kim, though I would not permit you to eat them. These stands are no cleaner than the Great Hall’s floors.”
“Oh, thank you so much Headmistress McGonagall. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to drop that practically on you, I was so distracted looking for a spot to sit.”
“And why, might I ask Mr.Kim, are you sitting here? In the teacher’s box?” She pursed her lips and stared at him.
“I was just waiting for my boyfriend, Headmistress. Seokjin is doing the announcements today, and I didn’t want him to be lonely.” She glanced at Jin who was screaming about something into the microphone, and a gentle smile fell on her face. Bingo.
“Well, Mr.Kim you may wait here for him. Seeing how Mr.Jeon and Mr.Jung are playing, it should be done soon.”
Namjoon quickly sat down, thinking about how he was going to phrase his questions.
“Is this one of the fastest paced games you’ve ever seen Headmistress?” Namjoon asked, already knowing the answer.
“It is certainly quick, but no. I believe a few of Mr.Potter’s games were faster.”
“Wow, that’s so amazing that you got to teach him. I’ve heard so many stories and legends about him.”
“He certainly was something,” The Headmistress hummed, watching the game. Namjoon bit his lip, hoping his timing was good.
“I was actually wondering, I wanted to write one of my parchments for History of Magic about him, and some of the magical artifacts he’d run into over his time here at Hogwarts. You know, things like the Sorcerer’s stone, the Sword of Gryffindor, things like that. I heard a, well, a rumor about something, and I was wondering if you knew anything about it, Headmistress.”
“What rumor?” She asked, taking the bait.
“Well. . . I heard that he once held the Resurrection Stone. Is it true?”
Her eyes widened and she turned towards him.
“Mr.Kim, that’s a very serious rumor you’re discussing. Why on Merlin’s beard would you wish to discuss or write such a piece of controversial magic? Would it not be better to write about something else, like Mr.Potter’s time with the Tri-Wizard Tournament?”
“Well, uh, yes Headmistress, but-” Namjoon stuttered. “But I wanted to make sure my paper was on new, rarely touched information. Everyone I ask doesn’t seem to know, so I figured, no, I hoped you would be able to help me.”
“Mr.Kim,” She said his name, and paused, as if debating on telling him anything. “The Resurrection stone is a very serious, and powerful piece of magical history. It was Headmaster Dumbledore’s for a while, as a ring. It was terribly cursed, and brought upon death to those who wore it, courtesy of Voldemort.”
“But what happened to it?” Namjoon question.
“Whatever does it matter?” She asked. “It was lost in the Battle, no doubt. Nothing good falls upon its owner, so there is no need to find it. You. . .” She looked at him funny. “Mr.Kim, do not tell me you are thinking of looking for it?”
“Oh, no! No, I would never-”
“Good. All that ring does is bring death and pain. You stay away from it.”
“I wouldn’t even know where to start looking for it,” Namjoon chuckled, realizing he wasn’t going to get anything else out of this conversation.
“I heard it was framed and put in a picture,” One of the professors behind them said.
“No, no, that can’t be. I heard it was broken and destroyed.” Stated a different professor.
“Why would they break it?” The first professor asked. “Keep it together I say.”
“I’ve heard a rumor that it was removed from the ring and lost in the Forbidden Forest,” A third professor said. They chuckled at that comment, and Namjoon frowned.
“Why are you laughing? Could it not be in the forest?” He asked.
“No, my boy-” The professor laughed. “We’re laughing because if it is in the forest, no one will ever find it. It’s as good as destroyed out there.”
The teachers resumed talking amongst themselves, and Namjoon turned around. He watched the game dejectedly, disappointed that they were right. If it really was in the forest, he’d never find it. Maybe he could go out in his animagus form, but even then, he was an owl. Not close to the ground to look for it.
“AND JUNGKOOK FINDS THE SNITCH! THE GAME IS OVER! IT’S GRYFFINDOR FOR THE WIN, 150-130! WHAT A SURPRISING UPSET!” Jin screamed, and the crowd roared. Namjoon watched Jungkook land on pitch, holding the snitch high above his head. Hoseok landed and gave him a big hug, all smiles even though he lost. Namjoon wasn’t certain, but he was pretty certain he saw Jungkook look up towards where Jimin was sitting, and give a smug grin. Namjoon glanced to where he saw Jimin before, only to see Taemin and the Slytherin making out in the stands. When Namjoon looked back at the pitch, Jungkook was already gone.
“Hey Joonie!” Jin said, sliding into the seat next to him. “Fun match, huh?”
“Oh,” Namjoon said, feeling his cheeks warm up at Jin’s nickname. “Yeah, I guess it was.”
“What were you up to while I was working?”
“Oh good,” The Headmistress exclaimed. “Mr.Kim Seokjin, finally. You can take your overly curious boyfriend away. He asks far too many questions-” She teased Namjoon, but both boys were too pale at her casual use of boyfriend.
“Have a good rest of your day, and don’t go looking for bad news,” She said, aiming the last part at Namjoon. They watched as she walked away, along with some of the other teachers.
“You asked her about the stone?!” Jin whispered.
“Of COURSE. She’s our best bet on what happened to it. If anyone knows, it’s her.”
“She won’t just tell you. . . wait, did she?”
“She said it was made into a cursed ring, and that Dumbledore had it. After the battle here at Hogwarts, it was lost. Some of the other teachers think it was destroyed, made into a painting, or lost in the woods.”
“All of those are not good.”
“No. Not at all.”
“So what are we going to do? We can’t just scour the entire forest-”
“BESTIES!” Hoseok flew up to them, a massive smile on his face. “After party in the Gryffindor common room if you’re not too busy snogging!”
“We aren’t snogging-”
“Pff, Merlin no-”
Hoseok rolled his eyes.
“Wait,” Jin said. “Are you inviting me to a party in my common room? You don’t even live there!”
“Uh, yeah,” Hoseok said, leaning forward and laying on his broom. “I think as Captain of my team and the best player in this school, I can invite anyone to anything.”
“Hobi,” Namjoon chuckled. “You just lost.”
“And?” Hoseok barked a laugh, his heart shaped smile making an appearance. “Someone won! That means a party! I better see you two there!”
“Yeah, yeah,” Jin shooed him away. “Get out of here. I can smell you from over there.”
“See you soon Hyung!” Hoseok waved, zipping down to go shower and change. Namjoon and Jin chuckled, slowly making their way out of the stands and back to the slushy, muddy ground below.
“He’s so happy again,” Jin smiled, thinking of Hoseok. “I’m glad.”
“Me too. I think he just needed to see Yoongi again,” Namjoon said.
“Well, they deserved it, those two love birds. Idiots, the lot of them. Are they dating now or something?”
“I’m not sure, but I hear they write all the time,” Namjoon hummed. “I made sure to give them their own separate sheets.”
“Smart, I don’t want to read their sex-talk.”
After their fire-chat with Yoongi, Namjoon offered to stand guard and let Hoseok and Yoongi talk, alone. They were there for around twenty minutes, and when they were done, Namjoon came back to see a beaming Hoseok and a blushing fire-Yoongi. How can someone made of fire blush? Namjoon doesn’t know, but he saw it. They talked together and decided that they would hex a piece of paper to send secret messages to one another. Namjoon made it, one set for everyone in the group to carry for emergencies. Even Jimin had one, if he chose to come back. And unknown to the whole group, a special two way connection for just Hoseok and Yoongi. For the past two weeks, Hoseok was glued to a little scrap piece of paper during all his classes. He went nowhere without it.
“Do you want me to make us one of those?” Namjoon asked Jin as they trekked through the mud to the castle. “We could write all the time.”
“That’s sweet of you, but I don’t think we need it. We see each other often. If it’s an emergency, just use the group paper.”
Namjoon nodded, pretending he wasn’t a tiny bit sad. He hoped Jin would’ve said yes, that way he’d have an excuse to write all the time to him. But it was fine. He’d find another way to get Jin’s attention.
It briefly crossed Namjoon’s mind to simply ask Jin out right here, right now. They were alone. It’d be fine.
But then the dark thoughts of rejection and ruining what they had crossed his mind, and Namjoon chickened out.
That’d be another task for a different day.
