Kim Seokjin and Breakfast Bedlam
“This is ridiculous-” Jin said to Hoseok as they walked to breakfast. “‘ Thanksgiving break?’ We’re in the U.K.! We don’t celebrate that holiday! The students are going to start asking questions-”
“And we’ll say it's the harvest festival break.”
“But the harvest moon isn’t now, it’s in two weeks-”
“Then it’ll be a Professor workshop break. Whatever we need to say to keep the peace,” Hoseok answered.
“But Hoseok, they’ve seen the Daily Prophet. It wouldn’t take a genius to piece two and two together that the breakout-”
“Has nothing to do with the long weekend. It’ll be fine. Stop overthinking.”
“Yah, use respect. I’m your Hyung.”
“Fine, Hyung. I’m sorry, but it’s true. If you show total control and confidence, no one will think anything wrong. Trust me, I’m the Hufflepuff Quidditch captain. Those kids have their heads so far in the clouds, I wouldn’t be able to reach them on a broomstick. Confidence works.”
“. . . I’m glad you’re a Prefect too, Hoseok.”
Hoseok smiled warmly, nodding at Jin. They continued walking in silence, entering the Great Hall just in time for breakfast to begin. Typically the Hall would be filled with students everywhere, but seeing as today was the first day of their new break, there weren’t as many. Perhaps a fifth were missing, and unfortunately, many were Hoseok and Jin’s friends.
Hoseok and Jin often spent their free time with the other Prefects, or with an assortment of fourth and fifth year Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs. Jin knew their fellow students thought very highly of them, and most often were afraid of ‘the two Seoks’, as the first years called them. He knew he was a bit tight on the rules, but he only wanted to lead the best he could. Someone had to look out for order, and he figured he could do it best.
“Where will we sit today?” Jin asked, unsure where to go. He knew plenty of people around, but to be honest, he didn’t know them. He knew their names, houses, who they talked to, some even their family members, but he wasn’t friends. Anyone would welcome him at their table, he knew he was very well liked, but Jin didn’t feel like starting all over with new friends.
At least he had Hoseok.
“Can we sit with Namjoon?” Hoseok suggested, and Jin blinked.
“The Ravenclaw with the glasses?”
“That’s like 90% of them, but yeah.”
“The one at the lake yesterday, who was drenched?”
Hoseok narrowed his eyes, but nodded.
“Yeah, him, but I don’t see him. Here, maybe Jungkook knows-” Hoseok made his way to the end of the Ravenclaw table, where Jeon Jungkook sat alone eating toast. “Hey Jungkook!”
“Uh, I-” Jungkook started sputtering. “I-shit, I didn’t do anything! I wasn’t part of it!”
“What?” Jin asked, sliding onto the bench across from his housemate.
“Uh, n-nothing! Hi, Hyungs! What, uh, what do you need?”
“We were just wondering where Namjoon is, any ideas?” Hoseok asked, and Jungkook shook his head.
“Sorry, he went home. He got a Howler last night, his parents demanded that he and his little sister come home immediately. He’ll be back soon though, before classes start again.”
“That sucks, I was hoping to talk to him about DADA this week, since we haven’t had any time to talk. How was your week? Enjoying spell training?”
“Oh my gosh, yes! It’s so fun!” Jungkook said, eyes widening while he explained with his hands. Jin zoned out while he talked a little, not too interested in hearing how great of a teacher his brother was. Apparently, everyone loves him now. He used to be the boring sub no one spoke of, but all it took was one class where he let them aim at dummies, and suddenly he was the favorite. Jungkook went on for a few minutes about all the great tips on accuracy and power in stunning spells that Seok Jung had said.
Jin started eating breakfast with no comments.
It wasn’t that he disliked his brother, it was just. . . his brother.
Seok Jung.
Head boy Seok Jung.
Head boy, and Quidditch captain Seok Jung.
Head boy, Quidditch captain, and auror Seok Jung.
There are only so many titles you can gain before people stop listening, and Jin had reached the breaking point with his older brother. Now, he had to reappear in his life, just when Jin thought he got some independence. Great. So great. So. . . Seok Jung.
“-and my friend, Taehyung, he’s on break too to see his muggle family, he actually blew up the dummy! It was literally so awesome.” Jungkook stabbed his fresh stack of pancakes, shoveling forkfuls into his mouth now that he was done talking.
“Taehyung? From my house, right?” Hoseok asked, and Jungkook nodded.
“Yeah, me, Taehyung, and Park Jimin are kinda a trio.”
“How’d you meet Namjoon?” Hoseok asked politely.
“I uh, kinda saw him half naked?” Jin choked on his food, sputtering at Jungkook’s words.
“You what?!”
“I. Saw him. In his boxers. By the lake. Apparently he was going for a swim. He uh, you know, did his best to stop the beautification spell Hyung put on me-” Jungkook pointed his fork at Jin, who smiled sheepishly. “But ended up making it worse. We ran into you guys, then Yoongi, and when it was all done, we kept in touch. He tutors me from time to time, and we are like a little study group.”
“So that’s what you guys were doing in the woods,” Jin mused.
“I think Namjoon told me about it, or at least mentioned it,” Hoseok replied. “Sounds fun.”
“It is! You should totally come! Hoseok Hyung, you know Namjoon Hyung, so that’ll work, and I know you Jin Hyung, so everyone should be fine. We even got Yoongi Hyung to agree to come back so-”
“Wait, Yoongi is willingly part of this?” Jin asked. “I thought he was being held against his will. He hates first years.”
“Not me! I’m special. ”
Jin raised an eyebrow.
“Special alright. I bet Yoongi hangs out with you because he-”
“He enjoys only one Gryffindor’s presence in the school, which happens to be a first year,” Yoongi said, coming from nowhere to sit next to Jungkook. “Sorry, I was busy. I would’ve come to save you sooner if I'd known.”
Jin rolled his eyes, his breakfast ruined.
“Hey Yoongi,” Hoseok said quietly, to which the Slytherin nodded in response. “How’s quidditch practice lately?”
“Fine. Would be better if all my chasers came to practice but what can I expect? One can’t even show up to breakfast on time.”
Just as Yoongi said that, Park Jimin entered the Great Hall. He jogged to their table, collapsing on Jungkook’s other side while breathing heavily. He didn’t even look at Hoseok or Jin, but immediately started telling his story with a grin.
“Jungkook, you missed it! I finally got those stink bombs from that one Gryffindor, so I set them off in the potions hallwa-oh.” Jimin finally stopped talking, noticing just exactly who was with them. “Uh, ahhahahahha, yeah. I set them off, like, you know, freed them? They’re living, so I let them run. Outside. Not in the building. That’s wrong. Very wrong.”
Yoongi rolled his eyes, sipping on his orange juice instead of bothering himself with his housemate.
“Jimin, do I want to know?” Jin asked, and Jimin shook his head frantically. “Fine. I won’t look into it, but seriously, change your robes. You stink.”
Jimin sniffed his own collar, then paled. He apologized and quickly ran off, heading to the dungeons to change into something that didn’t smell like a stink bomb. Hoseok smiled at Jin, proud for not taking house points away from Jimin. Jin wasn’t that stuck up. He once did dumb things like stink bombs too.
Yoongi didn’t miss that either, and Jin felt the Slytherin’s eyes on him. When he stared back in a defiant challenge, Yoongi frowned and looked away.
Breakfast was quieter after that, seeing as Jin and Yoongi together functioned better in silence. Hoseok tried to make small talk a few times, which Jin found cute. Hoseok has had a crush on the Slytherin for two years now, but just never finds the courage to actually talk to him. The only reason Jin is still sitting here is so Hoseok can try and talk to Yoongi.
Not that Jin wants his best friend to like his enemy, but really, Hoseok deserves whatever he wants. If he had to put up with a pale piece of shit, then he’d bring the plunger.
Chuckling at his own poop joke in his head, Jin missed when the mail owls started entering the Great Hall. They swooped in by the tens, dropping letters, packages, and sometimes dead mice onto students below. Hoseok caught the Daily Prophet, Jungkook and Yoongi grabbed letters, and Jin caught a small box before it could fall into his coffee.
Inside his box was a small amount of homemade chocolate, no doubt from his grandmother. She was one of the original founders of Honeydukes in Hogsmeade, so Jin always got to try the newest creations. Hoseok was busy reading the paper when Jin was done examining his gift. All Jin could see was the front page, where the title “ Escapees not found, Jameson and Lee at large-” danced across the page. A moving black and white photo of destroyed prison walls was on the cover, and Jin frowned. They normally didn’t send photographers to Azkaban, so they must be extra concerned if they needed proof from the source.
Jungkook was too busy with his letter to notice Hoseok’s paper, and Yoongi was as well. Jin watched Jungkook smile at the letter, no doubt enjoying warm words from family.
Yoongi was the opposite.
His letter looked shabby and gray, with his name in dull, scratchy red ink on the front. He was quickly scanning the letter, eyes jumping back and forth, faster and faster. When he was done, he immediately pocketed the letter, and sat there, staring at his empty plate in front of him.
“. . . you okay?” Jin asked quietly, snapping Yoongi from his trance.
“Fine. I’m fine. I-” He paused, shook his head, and stood up. “I’m going to go practice. Don’t follow me.”
Yoongi marched out the Great Hall, and Hoseok slouched in his seat. Jin gently rubbed his back, knowing it was just killing the Hufflepuff not to follow Yoongi. It was for the best, whatever Yoongi received in the mail couldn’t have been pleasant.
It must’ve been from his family. Everyone in Hogwarts knew about the Min family. They were infamous for their long Pureblood lineage, and sour demeanors. They hailed straight from Korea, and were one of the most famous bloodlines there. Yoongi’s older brother Junki graduated from Hogwarts a few years ago, before dropping off the grid.
Jin had only seen Yoongi’s parents once, a few years ago. It was back when he and Yoongi were first years, during Christmas break. Yoongi never went home for breaks, and neither did his brother. That was the year Mr and Mrs Min came to Hogwarts. They showed up, bundled in all black and silver, in the middle of a Christmas eve snowstorm. Jin remembered watching them march through the front door, silently demanding a private audience with Headmaster McGonagall. Jin had thought they may stay to wish their sons a merry Christmas, but they didn’t bother even saying hello before they left.
Word traveled fast, and soon everyone knew about the incident.
Yoongi never spoke on it, and would glare down anyone who asked about his family. Junki on the other hand, wouldn’t shut up. He’d spin story after story about his relatives, their titles, accomplishments, and any evil deed they’d done. He had no shame or secrecy, and he thrived in the fear it brought him.
Jin resented Junki.
He was cruel, harsh, fake, and practically embodied every negative thing Slytherin represented. Jin wasn’t completely unfair, there were some fine Slytherin students, but every house has its issues. Junki just. . . personified them well.
He’d encourage and start fights in the halls, terrorize first years, he never did his work, and he seemed like he was always scheming or lurking. Jin found himself under Junki’s eye, too often being the subject of pranks or attacks. It was miserable, and he couldn’t have been happier when Junki finally graduated and left Hogwarts.
Yoongi wasn’t Junki, Jin knew that.
But. . . sometimes it was hard to differentiate them.
Yoongi could be harsh, impatient, apathetic, and he certainly got on Jin’s nerves. He even looked like Junki. They had the same face shape, eyes, and smirk. Jin hated that smirk. It always meant shit was about to happen, and he thought of Junki every time Yoongi made that face.
He knew he shouldn’t judge Yoongi for his brother’s deeds. Jin was raised better than that. He knew better. It was just difficult.
Jin’s parents were Purebloods too, but far less intense. Their family was a mix of houses, unlike the Slytherin Mins. Sure, they could be a little doting and naggy when it came to schooling, but honestly it worked. Jin and Seok Jung turned out great. At least, he thinks he’s great. Who would ever say he wasn’t?
But then again, it was all perspective. Yoongi’s parents probably thought he and Junki turned out great. (If you think eyeliner, poor attitude, and a sleep deprived look was great , then so be it. Sometimes Jin felt the urge to offer Yoongi some skincare tips, but thought he was better keeping that to himself.)
The owls flew away, leaving the Great Hall just as breakfast came to a close. Jungkook and Hoseok made study plans, and Jin absentmindedly followed them out. He was supposed to be worried about his O.W.L.S. this year, and he was, but Yoongi’s letter was distracting him. Yoongi probably didn’t care about O.W.L.S. . . . but then again, Jungkook said Yoongi was now showing up to study groups.
Maybe Jin would have to come to one of those meetings, just to see if it was true.
Maybe Yoongi is different from Junki.
