The exchange

POV Sebastian

Today was my return to school. I had been trying to catch up with Valerian for a few days. The professor all agreed to help me by giving me private lessons and extra home work. It was very generous of them. I wondered if they knew about my suicide attempt.
I could tell Omonis was worried it might be too soon, but if I were to find purpose in life, I had to get back into it first.
I had concealed my scar around my neck with magic as I didn’t wish for people to ask questions. But everytime I looked at it in the mirror, it reminded me of my past failures. And this needed to change, I knew it. I had to try and do better, for myself, and for my friends. I couldn’t be that selfish again.

We met our classmates for our first class. Edmund and Cassandra welcomed me back, and as expected, they asked me where I had been all this time. I had prepared an excuse, and I went for illness.
Valerian was sitting between Ominis and I. She cought me up on how to make the draught of living death potion that places the taker in a state of sleep which makes them seem like they are dead. It could be useful if one had to pretend they’re dead.
I let Ominis and Valerian do most of the work as I observed at first. But my thoughts kept drifting away, wondering what I was doing there, what was the point ?
This time, I had an answer, it was to become an auror, work with my best friend, stop people like the order and help others. I repeated that several times in my head so I would believe in my own words.
Valerian’s voice brought me back to reality asking me how I was feeling. She was also concerned it might have been too soon.
I was fine, I just felt indifferent to my surroundings, that’s all.

And Later, Valerian suggested we had lunch together, just she and I. I wasn’t execting to hear that. Ominis was to eat with Edmund and Cassandra today. She called it our bonding time. It was strange to think Ominis was the one cast aside for once. Maybe that’s what she was hoping for, to valorize me. I did tell Ominis I felt useless.
When we sat together, she revealed she was hoping I’d help her with the engegment party preperations. Ominis must have talked to her about it. I must admit I was quite pleased. I saw what they were doing there, giving me purpose, step by step.
We went over the details entousiastically. I was always astonished by her kindness and maturity. She was perfect for Ominis.
« Valerian, I forgot to ask Ominis about this, but did you go to the hall of prophecy in the end wihout me ? » I demanded.
« … we did. I’m sorry » she said regretful.
« I’m not asking this to make you feel guilty, but to know if Ominis touched the orb, if he was able to hear the prophecy » I clarified truthfully.
« He was » she replied.
« And what did it say ? » I urged.
We had been waiting a long time for this moment. Would we finally get answers ? But if they did, they would have told me sooner. I felt disappointed before she even revealed the content of the prophecy.
« Well, we were right about the dark lord being a descendant of the Gaunts. He’s a descendant from Salazar Slytherin through his mother’s side » she declared.
« His mother’s side ? Interesting » I replied.
« Why interesting ? » demanded Valerian curious.
« I have been asking myself if he’d be a descendant of yours or Marvolo’s » I confessed.
« It’s a prophecy, the future isn’t engraved in stone, it can be changed » she alleged.
« You don’t believe in fate ? » I asked surprised.
« No, I don’t. Anyway, he’ll be born in 1926. It said he would be concidered the most powerful and dangerous dark wizard of all time. His father would be a muggle. Let me think … Basically he will opt for pure-blood supremacy ideals. And he’ll be the first ever to cheat death itself. He will be the one responsible for starting the first great wizard war along side something they called Deatheater ... » she narrated.
« What wizard war ? » I exclaimed confused interrupting her.
« It hasn’t happened yet, remember ? » she replied calmly.
« Oh, yeah of course. Is there no way to stop that nutcase ?! » I announced in disbelief.
« How can you stop someone that isn’t born yet ? » she reminded.
« But we should still be around when he is though » I observed.
« Whay are you thinking ? » she asked suspiciously.
« I’m thinking we should keep an eye on this dude ! Nothing more ! » I uttered.
The truth was I did think about the easy way to deal with this problem. And I repulsed the idea immediately afterwards. I was NOT going to kill a baby just because of some prophecy that might not even happen like Valerian alleged. Why did I even have that thought in the first place ? Why did I have to have dark thoughts ? I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I refused to let them consume me. I was not a dark wizard, I rejected the idea of killing Riddle immediately ! And that was the right thing to do. Yes.
« Are you alright Sebastian ? » asked Valerian concerned.
Her voice called me back to reality. That’s when I realised I had been making back and forth movements with my body the whole time and so I instantly put an end to it.
« Yeah ...No… I’m not sure yet. That name, Deatheaters, it rings a bell. When did I hear that before ? » I thought.
I was going through my mind for an answer.
« That’s it ! It was Marvolo who told me about them. That’s what the member of the order call themselves » I asserted.
« It makes sense, they are preparing for his arrival so the next generation can take over » she commented.
« Maybe we should be doing the same. Prepare the next generation for what’s coming » I opined.
« Really ? » querried Valerian amazed.
« Why not ? We’ve got to do something ! And I think it’s a great idea ! As future Aurors, it’s our responsability » I told with conviction.
She looked my way as if she was trying to figure out what was going on inside my head.
« Well, why not » she replied simply.
She just looked glad to see me so elevated. She must have thought I found a new purpose, a project that would stimulate me. And it did. When I become a an Auror, I could help the next generation prepare for the worst. But wouldn’t that rather be a teacher’s job ? Maybe I could select skilled students and take them under my wing, telling them all about the prophecy. Though I didn’t want to be concidered as a sect, like the order. Ideas were growing wild in my mind. I’d have to think this through properly.

We had finished our lunch. Valerian had stained her shirt and wished to go back to her room for a quick wardrobe change.
When she left, Ominis joined me at my table.
« So, how was lunch with my fiancé ? » he said as I could detect a slight bitterness in his tone.
« You’re jealous ? » I teased.
« I can’t say I enjoyed being cast aside, watching her from afar with another man » he confessed forsaken.
« You know you have nothing to fear, right ? » I assured.
« I know that. Anyway, so what did you guys talk about ? Am I allowed to know ? » he said sassily.
« We went through the details of your engagment party. Thanks by the way » I started.
I could see him smile, his face showing great satisfaction.
« Then she told me about the orb and the prophecy » I added.
« Good. So you know. I would add that I kept the orb as proof for the demonstration day » he claimed with a devious smile.
« I must be rubbing off you ! Your slytherin side is showing. They are so going down ! » I declared joyfully as he laughed.

We walked together to out next lesson, and when we entered the room, I could see Ominis searching for someone.
« Are you looking for Valerian ? » I demanded.
« I am, yes. Do you know where she went ? » he asked.
« She stained her shirt, so she went to her room to change into a clean one » I divulged.
« Then she should have been back by now » stated Ominis uneasy.
« Ominis, she only went up stairs. She’ll be there any minute now » I reassured.
His face showed it all. He was worried.
« Perhaps you’re right ... » he replied not sounding convinced though.
After a few minutes, Professor Katona male asked us to take a seat.
« Valerian’s still not back. Something’s not right. I just want to make sure she’s fine » he insisted.
« Then I’m coming with you » I expressed.
He nodded, and we both exited the classroom, rushing up stairs. Ominis knocked on her door, asking permision to come in, but there was no answer.
« Can you see her shadow ? » I questioned.
« No » he replied his voice trembling.
I knew what he was thinking, was she dead ? That’s the only reason he couldn’t see a shadow. That’s when it hit me, how frightened he was because of me, the day he found me hanging from the plank unable to see me, confused, but felt me there, crying in depair. It must have been traumatizing. And I felt bad for putting my best friend through such horror.
He opened the door, and called her name over and over.
« Valerian ?! Can you see her ? » he asked fearfully.
« No. She’s not here » I replied concerned.
« Then where is she ? » he shouted anxiously.
He was marching back and forth going mad. His hands were both placed on each side of his head as he enhaled sharply.
« Calm down Ominis, you can’t have a panic attack now. We’ll find her. Maybe she left a clue behind. Let me examin the room, ok ? In the mean time, go and ask students if they’ve seen her » I instructed calmly.
He nodded desperately as tears were welling up in the corner of his eyes.
When he left the room, I began my search. Where could she be ? She would have never left before telling us where she was going first. And she usually was never alone for too long.
I looked around, searching the bathroom first, to see if I could find her stained shirt. I asked myself why she didn’t just cast a spell to conceal it, like I do with my scar. Maybe because she wasn’t a pure-blood she didn’t have the same reflexes, a muggle would have to wash off the stain, unlike us.
I then searched the wardrobe, around her bed. But nothing.

That’s when an owl pecked at the window. He was holding something in his mouth, a letter.
I quickly opened the window to let him in as I grabbed the enveloppe. The owl then flew away. I hurried to open the enveloppe, unscrolling the parchment as I read it.
It said : the ring for her life, meet me at the catacomb tonight, come alone.
Merlin’s beard ! I was sure this was Marvolo ! This wasn’t his father’s writting nor her mothers I was accustomed to.
I rushed through the corridors, desperately seeking for Ominis. I looked like a mad person running and calling for his name all the while. But I couldn’t care less. Valerian was in danger, and we had to save her, that’s all that mattered.
I finally found him after a few minutes later, talking to Professor radagor.
« Ominis ! I know where she is ! » I shouted out of breath from all that running.
« Where ?!! » he urged looking desperately troubled.
Professor Radagor was also eager to hear what I was about to say.
« There’s a letter, there was no name but I’m pretty sure it’s from Marvolo » I said nervously.
I saw his face suddenly go from worried to pissed.
« Tell me what it says » he demanded bitterly.
« The ring for her life » I asserted.
Ominis shouted in rage.
« Damn Marvolo ! How did he know we had the ring ?! » he yelled.
« I … don’t know. The forgetting spell should have worked ! It did work ! I don’t understand ... » I said feeling guilty. If he remembered, that meant the spell hadn’t worked, and I had failed once more. And now Valerian was captive because of me.
« What’s going on ? » querried the professor perplex.
« Professor, when one casts the forgetting spell, Obliviate, is there a way for the victim to gain back his memories again if they were erased ? » I asked in culpability.
« It’s possible, yes. Only skilled wizard can accomplish that by training their mind everyday before and after the spell » she explained.
Ominis was breathing loudly. He was losing it.
« That sounds a lot like Marvolo » I said trying to convince myself also this wasn’t my fault.
« It doesn’t matter, we need to reach her, NOW ! » he cried agitated.
« He said to come alone, tonight to the catacomb » I divuldged dismally.
« So Miss Matthews is held hostage my a person you know ? » resumed the professor.
« … yes, by his brother » I admitted.
Ominis’ breathing was becoming louder. I didn’t want him to pass out again. So I grabbed his shoulders and shook him.
« Ominis, stop. You won’t be of any use to us if you faint. Breathe ! I swear we’ll get her back. I’ll help you ! » I said with conviction, trying to soothe him.
He just nooded grabbing my arm as he wept.
« You’re going to need a lot more than just the both of you if what you say is true. You’re brother is a Gaunt, a powerful family with a reputation for dark magic. And if you go alone, then you’re as good as dead » she said smartly.
« The professor’s right. I’m coming with you. And I think the time has come to ask Haley to gather some of her collegues. If Marvolo remembers I took the ring, then he probably also placed back our little trip to the catacomb when I was desperate for help, therefore knows we know about their hidding spot. Haley had placed spies there, they could help us defeat your family. We must assume Marvolo won’t be alone. He might gather the entire order, or maybe just the powerful ones, Malfoy, Lestrange, Black. That means we need back up. This is our chance to arrest them for their crimes, this is the moment we have been waiting for » I encouraged.
«  That wasn’t part of the plan no ! Valerian wasn’t supposed to be captured » he said troubled as we both let go of eachother.
« I’m sorry Ominis, you’re right. This wasn’t part of the plan. And I know all this is my fault, again » I said feeling my heart ache in guilt and sorrow. « I know I screwed up that night with Marvolo »
Ominis breathed in and out, trying to focus. He wiped his tears and then crossed his arms looking dead set on achieving his goal.
« No, you’re not to blame yourself. You’re not the problem. My family is. They bring misery and pain where ever they go. They did this to Valerian, they are the cause of all our suffering. And tonight, it stops. Sebastian, go to the ministry and find Miss Parkes, tell her about tonight and to find me at our house as soon as she can. I’ll wait for you there once I’m done with my errand » he instructed fiercely.
I barely recognised the Ominis standing before me. He was confident and determined, strong, unlike when he crumbled because of his panic disorder and Valerian would have to pick up the pieces.
I was comforted in the idea he wasn’t blaming me for what had happened.

I left Ominis deal with Professor Radagor while I apparated to the ministry of magic, asking for Haley. I didn’t feel like facing her again after our last conversation, but this was an emergency, it was for Valerian’s sake.
The secretary said she wasn’t in her office. Then I remembered I had the mirror. How stupid of me. So I used the mirror discretely to call her. She wouldn’t reply at first, probably avoiding me, then I expressed my concern for my friend’s life, telling her this was a matter of life and death situation. That’s when she finally answered.
« What is it ? » she asked roughly.
« It’s the order, or more precicely Marvolo. He’s holding Valerian captive and wants to exchange her life for the ring. He knows somehow we have it » I resumed.
« Crap. That’s our proof you’re about to give away ! » she answered annoyed..
« And I would do it again if it meant saving my friend’s life ! » I replied vexed.
How coud she think like this ? Her job was also to keep innocents safe, and Valerian was definitely innocent of all crimes.
« Ok, ok. I understand » she professed.
« Meet me at my house, Ominis is waiting for you there. He might have a plan » I instructed before I put the mirror away.

When I turned around, I bumpted into the Minister himself.
« I-I’m sorry ... » I started appologizing.
« Hey, I remember you, you’re M.Gaunt’s friend ! » he said pleased to see me.
« Yes Sir » I replied politely.
He looked worn out, dealing with the past few months’ events must have been challenging, especially when you have to work with a man like Ominis’ father.
I took the opportunity he was alone to ask him a question that had been bothering me.
« Sir ? May I ask you something ? » I inquired.
« Of course my boy, ask away » he agreed.
« Why agree to place the mark on muggle-borns ? » I demanded.
I have been asking myself for a while how one could agree to these terms.
« It might be hard for you to understand, but doing nothing would have been worse. The Ministry had to make it look like we were taking action. Sometimes telling the truth can have graver consequences, without that mark, people would have lost faith in us » he recited.
« People have lost faith in the ministry anyway ! » I observed.
« Yes, but not as many as we would have if we didn’t place the mark. We soothed the pure-bloods to the expense of muggle-borns, yes. It was a hard desicion to make, but we couldn’t lose both sides’ trust » he disclosed.
« Especially not the pure-blood’s support as they are the wealthy ones » I remarked.
« I understand your resetment. But power doesn’t reside in politics. And war isn’t won by good intentions, but with money, contacts, reputation » he confided.
« I wasn’t aware we were at war » I commented.
« Oh but we are my boy, just because people wouldn’t admit it, or try to hide the truth doesn’t mean we’re not. All wars are based on deception. Pure-bloods have been waiting for this for a long time » he opined.
« Yes, like the Gaunt family, or the Lestrange, or the Malfoys and others like them. They are the one who pull the strings » I mentionned.
He nodded.
« Then why agree to their terms ? » I challenged.
« My job is the safety of all citizens, muggle-borns and pure-bloods. If I hadn’t agreed to the mark, the faceless monster would have killed many more. I was trying to spare as many as I could. That’s the hardest part of being a leader my boy, you have to make tough choices, and accept that you will be blamed for everyone of them, good or bad » he explained.
« What if I told you there was a way to make all this stop ? » I confessed.
« I’d say you should be careful to whom you talk to this about. There are ears everywhere. And your action could be mistaken for treason. And so would mine if I were to agree with you » he murmured.
That was his way of telling me he was being watched.
« I’ll give you a piece of advise my boy, only fight for the things that matter, don’t waste your time on politics. You’re young, make the right friends, trust your instinct when it comes to chosing the correct partner in life » he said.
I could make out his message subtily concealed within his choice of words, I had to chose wisely my commorades to help me shift over the tide to help muggle-borns, because they mattered to me, this fight was worth it.
« Thank you for your time Minister » I reacted.
« Take care my boy. And please give my best wishes to M.Gaunt » he said as he left.
He always had a soft spot for Ominis. Maybe he felt sorry for him, not because he was blind, but because he was born and stuck with his attrocious family.

I then apparated home, where I found Ominis, Haley, Professor Radagor, Headmistress Radagor, Professor Herod, Professor Dunavan, Professor Katona male and female, Edmund and Casasndra and … Mrs Weasley ?
Everyone looked at me. I felt uneasy at that moment.
« Hello M. Sallow » said Mrs Weasley first.
« Professor Weasley, what brings you here ? » I asked astonished to see her.
Was that the errand Ominis had to run ?
« The fight, a chance to send Headmaster Black to Azkaban and answer for his crimes » she revealed.
It sounded like good reasons in deed.
« Professor Radagor. Headmistress, and all of you professors, why are you here ? » I demanded.
« Ominis summerized the situation, and we’re here to help. If a student needs us, we’ll always be there » she said calmly.
I nooded to thank them all.
Haley was avoiding all eye contact. She probably didn’t want me to get the wrong idea.
« You took your time, we were waiting for you » noted Ominis a bit brutally.
I just looked down, not daring to answer, like a little boy that was being scolded.
He came by my side marching through the room.
« I’m sorry. I’m on edge because … well you know why. I didn’t mean to sound rough » he appoligized.
« I know. You should know I bumped into the minister, that’s why I’m late. We had a little chat, and he implied he was being followed, or under surveillance and couldn’t help us. He also insisted on choosing my partners wisely » I murmured to him.
« The minister never choses his words lightly. You believe he was trying to pass on a message ? » he questioned.
« I do. Maybe he was warning me about a mole in our ranks. He seemed to know something, but couldn’t tell me » I whispered.
« If that’s true, then we need to find out who it is before tonight. Maybe someone is being manipulated, perhaps with impero, or blackmailed » he suggested.
« Maybe. But we need to know who we can trust first » I said truly.
« Why don’t we make them all drink a truth potion so they will reveal their true intentions. If they won’t drink it, we’ll consider them treators » Ominis suggested.
« Ominis, I can’t do that. I might admit I’ve killed my uncle and used dark magic twice ... » I said fearfully.
« Don’t worry. I’ll be the one asking the quetions, ok ? » he assured.
« Ok » I replied taking a deep breath.
He taped my shoulder before we joined the others.
« Before we start, we need to make sure we can all trust eachother. My brother’s speciality is going into one’s mind and twist it to make you believe what he wants you to believe » stated Ominis.
« And what would you suggest ? » demanded Professor Radagor, not really asking, but teaching by pushing him to ask the proper questions.
« A truth potion. All of you will have to drink it, and so will we » declared ominis.
« We’d better get these potions then. Juliska ? Would you mind ? » said Professor Radagor.
Who was Juliska ? That’s when Professor Katna female advanced and disappeared.
I see so it was her. She came back as quickly as she was gone, holding potions in her hand. She gave one to each of us.

« Who’d like to do the honnours ? » said Edmund.
« I will start » announced Headmistress Radagor.
She probably wanted to set a good example for us younger ones.
« Who will be asking the questions ? » demanded Haley.
« I will » replied Ominis resolved.
« I’m afraid I’m the best person qualified here » she claimed.
I shot her a look of mefiance.
« And I’m afraid the young ones are in charge and must learn. M.Gaunt, please begin » said roughly Professor Radagor.
I saw Professor Weasley smirk. Professor Radagor’s mother the Headmistress smiled as she drank the potion.
« I’m ready » she declared.
« Do you have the intention of betraying us tonight ? » started Ominis.
« No »
« Are you related to the order somehow ? » continued Ominis.
« No »
« Do you pledge your loyalty to us tonight, to save my fiancé from my traitorous family ? » he added.
Everyone looked surprised by this revelation. I guess Ominis didn’t care anymore if the truth came out now.
« I do. And congratulations » added the headmistress.
« Thanks » he said looking glum. He would have rather announced his enagment under better circontances. « Why are you helping us ? »
« I believe it is the soul purpose of a teacher or a headmistress to help in anyway that we can our students flourish through adversity. And Miss.Matthews is far to bright to be lost to these imbeciles » she said sincerely.
I could help but chuckle. I always thought she was kind of cool.
« Thank you headmistress, and I appologize for the inconveniance » told Ominis serene.
« Don’t. It’s a smart move you’re making, worthy of an auror » she professed.
His sudden self-control was admirable and odd. But I was glad he could handle the situation.
« Your questions should be more precise. For instance, when you ask if we’re related to the order somehow, it could mean family related, which means we could easily avoid the truth. You should ask instead if we know a member of the order, and have they been asking for information or a favour from us » advised Haley.
« Noted. Then I guess you’re next » he said bitterly.
Why was he acting this way with her ? He couldn’t have known we had … sent some good time together surely. But Ominis was smart, maybe he had figured it out, and juging by her attitude tonight he knew she was the one who ended whatever was going on between us.
She drank the potion and waited for Ominis’ questions.
« Do you have the intention of betraying us tonight ? » started Ominis.
« No »
« Do you know a member of the order ? » he continued.
« I know your brother and father a little as they are collegues, but not really »
« Has a deatheater ever come to you before ? » he questioned.
« No »
« Do you pledge your loyalty to us tonight, to save my fiancé from my traitorous family ? »he added.
« I do »
« Why are you helping us ? What are your motives ? » he demanded.
« Because of what the Ministry has authorised on the muggle-borns was wrong, placing the mark was a terrible error. I like Miss Matthews, she’s clever and would make a good detective auror. She doesn’t deserve to be humiliated. And saving her and all muggle-borns is he right thing to do » she revealed.
« Thank you Miss Parkes » said Ominis emotionally.
Her words went straight to his heart I presume.
« Who’s next ? » inquired Ominis.
« … me » I told nervously.
It had to be done, so might aswell be now I thought.
As I held the potion in my hand, looking at it, my heart was racing. I felt anxious, hoping I wouldn’t spill the beans.
Ominis nodded to let me know he was ready. I drank the potion and waited for his questions.
« Do you have the intention of betraying us tonight ? » started Ominis once again.
« No, absolutely not »
« Do you know a member of the order ? » he continued.
« I-I do. I know your father, who is part of it, and your brother and M.Malfoy , … and also our former Headmaster Black »
« Has a deatheater ever come to you before ? » he questioned.
« Yes. Marvolo »
« Why ? » demanded Miss Parkes.
« He came to me years ago, proposing I save my sister, Anne using dark magic. But I refused. I’ve also met M.Malfoy at Gaunt Manor, along with Corvus Lestrange, and I know Headmaster Black of course » replied Sebastian.
Mrs.Weasley sighed in sadness reminicing Anne.
« Do you pledge your loyalty to us tonight, to save my fiancé from my traitorous family ? »he added.
« I do »
« Why are you helping us ? What are your motives ? » he demanded to finish.
« To save Valerian, and all of us, but mostly to protect Ominis, my brother from these evil gargoyles who call themselves his family » I answered.
Ominis smiled, clearly satisfied by my answer, and so was I. I could breathe normaly again, surprised I didn’t say I was seeking for answers, nor dark magic, nor revenge. It soothed me to know my true intentions were pure.
The others all drank the potion too, most of them had the same motives, to protect others.
Then came Ominis’ turn. He asked me to interrogate him.
« Do you have the intention of betraying us tonight ? » I started.
« Honnestly ? No »
« Do you know a member of the order ? » I continued.
« Yes, I know my father and brother are in it, along with Headmaster Black, Corvus Lestrange and M.Malfoy »
« Has a deatheater ever come to you before ? » I questioned.
« Well, I kind of grew up with all these monsters. So I can only reply yes. But they’ve never asked me to join them as I’m too unworthy »
« Do you pledge your loyalty to us tonight, to save your fiancé from your traitorous family ? Now that’s a stupid question for you »he chuckled.
Ominis smiled before answering.
« I’m the one who wants this the most here » insisted Ominis.
« And that doesn’t make you any less dangerous » stated Haley.
« He can handle himself, Miss Parkes » I replied sharply.
She just raised her eyebrows indifferent.

« So, I guess we all passed the test with flying colours ? » demanded Cassandra.
« Yes, I guess it means we can now come up with a plan » replied Ominis.
To sum up, we all agreed Ominis and I would enter the catacomb first, then once Valerian was free, I would use the mirror to call Miss Parkes and the others to join the fight. Haley would gather in the meantime all the aurors she possibly could spare so they would arrest as many as possible.
« Remember, we’re not sure who’ll be there. And we might have to adapt our plan along the way » reminded Haley.
We all nodded.
Nightfall was already upon us.
« Time to go. Are you ready Ominis ? » I questioned.
« I’ve never been more ready in my life » he affirmed checking the ring was in his pocket.

We apparated straight inside the order’s whereabouts. The place was as cold as ever, our voices echoing in the vast room.
We were met by Marvolo , along with a few members of the order wearing masks at each ends of the room. They marched to us, demanding we give them our wands, which we did.
But the order didn’t know they were fake ones that Haley had given us, keeping our real ones hidden. It was clever of her really.
« Welcome little brother. I see you brought your little pet friend with you when I clearly stipulated you should come alone » said Marvolo calmly.
« But you didn’t clearly indicate to whom the letter was destined as you put no name, so we both came, surprise ! » joked Sebastian.
Marvolo laughed with his twisted evil voice.
« Do you see Valerian ?! » whispered Ominis to me worried.
As he couldn’t hold his real wand, he was now in the dark.
« No, she’s not there » I murmured.
« Where is she ? » asked Ominis bitterly to Marvolo.
« Looking for your pathetic mudblood girlfriend ? First, I want the ring » ordered Marvolo.
« You’ll get to see the ring when I will have seen Valeian first » he said firmly.
He made an indignant noise before calling his parents.
They both apparated with Valerian tied up to her wrists. I could see her trying to shout out to me, but they must have placed the quiet spell on her.
She looked frightened and had been crying as her eyes were red and puffy. She was still wearing that white stained shirt, I guess she didn’t even get the chance to change before Marvolo kidnapped her. Seeing her like this broke my heart.
« She’s there Ominis » I informed him with a sad voice.
He tried to put on a good face, not letting any emotions through to apprear strong.
« There he is, our treatrorous son. I see you still can’t follow simple instructions » said Mistress Gaunt on her high horses.
She looked as strict as ever, with her long black sleeve dress.
« If you want something done properly, then ask them correctly in the first place » replied Ominis spitefully.
« Impudent as always. You see my dear what I have to put up with ? » she spoke to her husband, Master Gaunt who remained awfully still.
« Don’t frett my dear. He’ll get what he deserves » he replied peacefully.
He was probably refering to torture. But I won’t let that happen.
His calmness always alarmed me. His long light blond hair falling down his large shoulders only added to his oppressiveness.
« So, it seems you’ve been a naughty boy Ominis. You’re engaged to the beautiful Lady Malfoy, and yet you keep seeing this obscene mudblood. That won’t do. You’re polluting our good name » declared Master Gaunt serenely.
« I’m not a boy anymore, father. And I couldn’t care less about Destiny. But that’s not why I’m here » reminded Ominis his face emotionless.
« You’re still just a boy. You clearly never learn. That’s too bad. We gave you a chance to marry her willingly, as the good parents we are. Now, we’ll have to force you to do so. I’m sure Marvolo will take great pleasure in casting Impero on your wedding day » suggested his father.
« Not a chance ! » I shouted bitterly.
I won’t let him hurt my brother any longer.
« Ominis, keep your pet in check » declared his father.
They were so infuriating !
« Sebastian, remember, don’t let your emotions control you » he murmured quietly to me.
« On the contrary, that’s what we like about you. You’re so impulsive, a good skill to have to become a dark wizard. Isn’t that right Sebastian ? » said Marvolo testy.
He must have heard Ominis.
« I’m not a dark wizard ! » I shouted irritated.
He was trying to get inside my head again. I would have to be stronger this time. I won’t let Ominis down again.
« No ? Yet you have used dark magic countless times before. Like I said, Ominis is holding you back by making you feel guilty. But once you let go of it, only then can you be free, your possibilities endless ! Embrace who you are ! » narrated Marvolo passionately.
« Don’t listen to him Sebastian. You’re much better than this. Redemption for you is possible, but not if you join them » said Ominis frankly.
« You speak as if I had a choice to make » I said dubiously.
« Don’t you ? Give me my ring back Sebastian, and join us ! I can show you what real magic is, teach you the dark arts so you can become more powerful  » urged Marvolo passionately.
« No ! I have no interest in power ! » I yelled anxiously.
His words were scaring me. I knew I didn’t want that for myself, I wanted the darkness out of my life once and for all.
« Wait, that was just the starter. For the main course, I propose something you desprately want. Your sister » he announced playfully.
What the hell was he talking about ? My sister was dead !
« What do you mean ? » I demanded angrily as I could feel my hands quiver.
« I mean that you could see her again » clarified Marvolo.
My heart stopped to his words. Was that really an option ?
« That’s impossible ! She’s dead ! » reminded Ominis in confusion.
« Death is just the next step in life. The veil between our worlds is thin » he insinuated.
« How ? Through dark magic ? » I interrogated.
« With my ring. Come on Sebastian, you know what the stone on my ring is, don’t you ? After all, that’s what you told me last I saw you. And you were right, we had such a good time » he teased.
That bastard ! He was playing with my feelings, trying to convert me !
« How can you remember this ? Sebastian cast the forgetting spell on you ! » uttered Ominis in disbelief.
« My pathetic ignorant brother. I was trained well by father to resist these spells. I have my techniques to remember, unfortunately for you » he said with a devious smile.
Master Gaunt just stood there, admiring proudly his first born’s work with a smirk.
« You’re lying ! » I blurted.
« Am I ? I have uncovered the secrets of the stone after years of research. If you joined us, I could show you how the ring works and you could speak to your sister whenever you feel like it » he said tempting me.
My palms were sweatty as my heart was now racing. I wanted to refuse his offer, but that would also end my only chance to speak to my twin again.
« Sebastian, he’s getting inside your head. Don’t let him. This isn’t what Anne wanted for you. She’d be pissed if you chose their side, she won’t even want to talk to you ! » Ominis said judiciously.
« Afraid I’ll steal your friend away Ominis ? If you don’t give me my ring back, I’ll end your loved ones lives, leaving you to lead a pitiful lonely life » he urged.
He shot his brother a dark look before he took out the ring. He then put it into my hand to my astonishment.
« Take it Sebastian. You must choose your own path. Know that I believe in you, I always have and I always will, my brother » said Ominis emotionally, on the brink of tears.
He was trying to win me over using our brotherhood relationship, though feelings.
I promised myself I wouldn’t disappoint him again. I also gave my word I wouldn’t betray him again. And if I sided with his family, this time there would be no coming back, no more redemption.
« Your soul is conflicted. You know you were meant for more than this wretched life. You were destined for darkness. Look at you, trying to hide away the truth. Why don’t you show us who you really are ? Why do you hide behind a concealment charm ? » said Marvolo forcefully.
He used a spell to reveal my scar around my neck as I looked down in shame.
« You shouldn’t have to supress your dark side Sebastian. See what it does to you when you try ? Guilt leaves a mark for life. Start fresh by our side. Give me my ring back and I’ll help you reach your full potential » said Marvolo alluringly.
I had been fighting for so long, my soul torn appart since my sister got sick.
I was desperate to see her again, feeling so lonely in this world without her. But Ominis was right, I would just be repeating the same mistakes, and she would have hated me for it. I recalled the look in her eyes, when I had killed our uncle, like I was an abomination.
« You don’t need your sister Sebastian, she gave you her forgivness, and you have earned mine too. Seeing her again won’t help you find what you’re looking for. Only you can forgive yourself now. This is the last step in your redemption. Don’t throw away everything you have worked so hard for » told Ominis devotedly.
« You said you’d always be there for me » I recalled.
« If you go down that road, you know I can’t follow you. I am nothing like my family. I will never chose darkness » he warned.
« Will you try to stop me if I joined forces with Marvolo ? » I asked sincerely.
He put on a doleful face before he nodded to say yes.
« I see. You know the only way to stop me is by killing me. Would you have the gutts to do it ? » I replied.
He looked my way indignantly as a tear would run down his cheek.
« Of course he won’t. Just look at him ! He makes me want to puke he’s so feeble ! » said Marvolo malevolently before he spat on the floor, his parents mocking their second child.
« But you always had more potential than him, M.Sallow. Your soul is as dark as ours. You should have been my second son, not that freak over there that carries our name undeservingly » admited Master Gaunt ruthlessly.
I knew what I had to do thanks to Ominis’ father.
I marched slowly to Marvolo hearing my every step echoe in the catacomb, keeping a safe distance when I stopped. He stared at me with a pleased face.
« Let her go first, and you shall have the ring » I instructed.
I reached for Marvolo’s hand as I placed the ring above it, waiting for Master Gaunt to let Valerian go.
I gave Valerian a sorrowful look before Master Gaunt released her as I watched her rush to Ominis. She jumped savagely into his arms as he embraced her dearly, sweeping her off her feet and kissing her cheek desperately as he whispered to her. Ominis looked so reassured and grateful, just like when I opened my eyes at the hospital after my suicide attempt.
He placed his forehead against hers as they were both feeling eachother’s faces, unable to see but feeling their love for one and other.
That’s when Ominis kissed her so fervently he could have swallowed her whole, his hands placed on each sides of her face, pulling her so brutally against his lips.
« Ugh, what a disgusting display. I’ll take that thank you » expressed Marvolo grabbing his ring from my fingers swiftly.
« I presume you’ll be joining us then ? » stated Marvolo as he put the ring on his finger.
I glanced at my friends, Ominis keeping Valerian close to him, his hand placed around her waist, her hands placed on his chest. They both looked disheartened. Then I turned back to Omini’s brother. They thought I would join these evil cockroaches ? Never.
« You presume wrong. I belong with my family. They keep believing in me when I have ceased believing in myself. I will always choose them, and protect them from you nutters ! » I said with conviction.
« Wrong choice. Shame, you had such potential. I guess you’ll die as a family then. How poetic » exclaimed Marvolo.
« Not today » I replied taking the mirror out as I reached our friends « Now ! »

I rushed back to Ominis and Valerian’s side, taking out my real wand ready for battle.
There were flashes of lights apparating everywhere. The deatheaters present and the Gaunts looked startled as they prepared themselves for the fight.
Ominis told Valerian to apparate out of here as things would get ugly, but she refused.
« You’re so bloody stubborn woman ! » he cried before he kissed her savagely.
He then took out his want and cancelled the silence spell on her.
Valerian seemed glad to hear her voice again.
« I love you Ominis, just in case » she told affectionately in a hurry.
« So do I my love. Please be careful » he implored before he kissed her one last time.
I summoned Valerian’s wand with Accio and placed it into her hand.
« Thanks. I’m proud of you Sebastian » she said before she gave me a quick hug.
I smiled as I returned the hugg . I knew I had made the right choice, but hearing her say she was proud of me was like a blessing to my heart.
« Ready to take them down ? » interrupted Ominis determined.
« Yeah. Let’s show them what the Sebminis team can achieve » I stated proudly.
The aurors had started without us, spells were cast at every corner. Deatheaters tried to apparate, but the aurors were too swift for them and caught them before they had a chance to vanish. I spotted one and went after him, casting endless spells to repell his attacks and when there had been an opening, I managed to disarm him and knock him out, leaving an auror to take over as he dissapeared with the body. They probably placed the deatheaters somewhere safe, somewhere they couldn’t get out of so easily.

I then discerned Ominis in all that mess fighting against Marvolo. I immediately rushed by his side and noticed along the way Haley fighting against Master Gaunt alongside Mrs.Radagor. Master Gaunt was quite powerful, and the deatheaters were not fighting fair, casting the forbidden spells on everyone they could. Many bodies were lying on the floor already. I was praying our friends weren’t one of them. Mrs Weasley was fighting against Mistress Gaunt with such fervor. I wasn’t worried in any way for her, she was strong enough to defeat that evil witch.
I had finally reached Ominis’ side. Marvolo must have been hi by Ominis as his forehad was bleeding.
« You think you can both defeat me ? You’re just kids ! » he hounded.
« Adults actually who will kick your ass, and take great pleasure in it ! » I kidded.
Ominis raised his wand ready for action.
« Have you been looking foward to this moment as much as I have dear brother ? » jested Marvolo.
« Oh yes. You’re going to answer for your crimes, dear brother. And I’ll make you pay for what you’ve done to my fiancé » Ominis said fiercely.
He looked stunned by Ominis’ revelation.
« Oups, did we forget to tell him Sebastian ? » teased Ominis, enjoying this far too much.
« I believe we forgot to mention you’re actually engaged to Valerian, and not the Malfoy cockroach » I revealed.
« You can be engaged to her all you want, but you’ve made an unbreakabkle vow, you’ll have no choice but to marry Destiny or you’ll die » reminded clearly Marvolo.
« But how can I hold up my engagment to Destiny when I have already made the same unbreakable vow beforehand with the love of my life ? » detailed Ominis playfully.
« I guess that means it cancells the second vow, doesn’t it Ominis ? » I added to the fun.
« I believe it does yes » jived Ominis with a big smile.
Marvolo looked infuriated, his face turning red.
« You … little piece of ... » started Marvolo enraged.
Ominis cast stupefy on his brother cutting him off, but he was able to protect himself in time with Protego.
« Give me the ring back Marvolo » shouted Ominis soundly.
« Go to hell » he boiled.
« You’ll be the one going to hell, I’ll make sure of it » Ominis said impersonating his brother’s favourite phrase.
That was enough to vex Ominis’ brother. As he cast crutio and the spell was about to hit Ominis when I pushed him out of the way and we both fell to the ground.
I helped him back up as we doged his new attempts. Ominis casted his spells while I had his back. That’s how we worked together. Ominis was so fueled by his will to protect Valerian he was hitting his brother with spells mercilessly. I had trouble keeping up with his speed. That’s when I realised how strong he had become. I needed to work out and practise more.
I could see fear in Marvolo’s eyes as he was unable to match with his brother’s agility and was hit by a blast that sent him flying against the wall behing him.
Marovo painfully got to his knees when I saw him grabb his ring with his fingers, ready to use it. He was going to summon the faceless monster. Valerian would be in danger ! I had to stop him or she’d die.
« Ominis ! The ring ! He’s about to use it ! » I yelled.
He turned the stone once already, my instinct was telling me I had to kill him before it was too late. No. I refused to use dark magic. Ominis was counting on me. But how would I stop him then ?
Marvolo spinned the ring a second time. The clock was ticking. What should I do ?! I could feel I was losing control, my impulsivity was about to take over my resolution when I saw Marvolo move the ring a third time as he screamed in pain, blood bursting from his hand pouring to the ground, his fingers had been slashed. I searched for the person responsible and was flabbergast when I realised it was Ominis. His wand was still up as he looked at his brother in satisfaction.
A dark shadow was fading in, it was too late. Marvolo had summoned the faceless monster.
« Sebastian, grab the ring quickly ! Valerian ! Get out of there, now !!! » cried out Ominis.
I quickly rushed to Marvolo, punching him in the face as hard as I could.
« That’s for everything you’ve done to me and my friends you bastard ! » I blurted.
I looked for the ring who was on one of his cut fingers on the floor. I pulled it of as my hands were stained of his blood.
When I turned around, the faceless monster was already upon Valerian as Master Gaunt had stopped her from apparating, holding her in place abruptly, offering her as fresh meat for the monster to feed on.
Ominis and the others were all pointing their wands at the monster now, desperately trying to stop it from advancing casting every spell they could think of in vain. The spells just went right through him. It was getting closer to Valerian with every second, who was unable to move.
« Valerian !! » Ominis blurted in tears.
She then kicked Master Gaunt in the ribs with her elbow which set her free and then grabbed him by the neck as she pulled all his weight over her thin body, crushing him to the ground.
Ominis rushed to her side and placed himself between her and the monster in his hopeless attempt to shield her as it was too late to apparate elsewhere, the monster upon them. Valerian looked terrified and Ominis poured all the tears he possibly could both knowing there was no way out of this. Valerian looked like she knew this was the end of her journey.
No that couldn’t be. She was about to be happy, to marry Ominis and start her life. She was to become one of the best aurors ever ! This wasn’t right !
There’s got to be something I could do ! Think Sebastian. Think …
I was so terrfied to lose Valerian I couldn’t focus properly. I couldn’t be deprived of another sister too.
Of course, the ring ! I now had it. I placed it as quickly as I could on my finger, leaving traces of Marvolo’s blood along it.
« Stop ! » I ordered hoping the faceless monster would obey me.
But nothing happened. I remembered Marvolo telling me about the monster, once it was summonded, it had to kill in order to disappear.
The faceless monster reached out his ghostly hand to grab Valerian by the neck when Haley placed herself between it and Ominis. The monster seized her instead as I watched her face being sucked by it.
« No !! » I yelled with all my heart.
But it was too late, her face was gone but her features appeared on the blank skin of its head before it dissipated. That’s when he dropped her to the ground, no longer concerned by her and its shadow vanished into thin air.
Everything happened so fast my mind couldn’t keep up. Was she dead ?
I rushed by her side, hoping to find her alive, but the life was gone out of her.
My heart was aching and I shed a tear holding her hand. She was dead and had sacrificed herself for Valerian.
« What happened ? » asked Valerian confused with a trembling voice.
She was so pale I thought she would faint. She must be in shock, like the rest of us.
« Miss Parkes is dead. The faceless monster took her face » said an auror saddly.
« I-I don’t … understand, she was a pure-blood » told Ominis perturbed.
« Actully, she wasn’t. But because she worked for the Ministry, she was able to avoid the mark for the sake of her case » explained another auror mournfully.
I couldn’t believe this. She had never told me. I knew she always kept to herself, but I felt this is something I should have known.
« I… We … had no idea » continued Valerian as she wipped her tears.
Ominis pulled Valerian into his arms, hugging her so securely as he kissed the top of her head, his face still humid from his tears. He had almost lost her, and thanks to Haley, Valerian was still alive. He didn’t let go of her, not even for a second.
Master Gaunt was regaining consciousness and tried to flee but an auror grabbed him by the neck before he could and vanished with him. I had completely forgotten he was still there.
« Where’s Marvolo ?! » urged Ominis in a panic.
« He’s right … there ... » I started realizing he had vanished.
« Damn it ! He got away ! » howled Ominis in a furry, still clinging to Valerian.
« I’m sorry Ominis, I got distracted. I’m the one to blame » I said feeling culpable.
« I’ts not your fault Sebastian. I was also distracted » he replied pulling Valerian’s head to his chest as he stroke her hair.
Valerian couldn’t speak just yet, still shaken up and just embraced Ominis.
I stayed by Haley’s side for a little while longer, but couldn’t look at her missing face.
Valerian and Ominis sat down for a moment, cuddling eachother now eased.

The Headmistress and her daughter approached us.
« You have done well, all of you. You should rest. We’ll take it from here » advised headmistress Radagor.
« Where will you take her ? » I whimpered.
« Don’t worry. I’ll let you know what becomes of her » she replied comforting me.
« What about the deatheaters you captured ? Which ones did you get ? What will happen to them ? » I demanded.
« We’re not sure which ones we were able to stop as they were all wearing masks. We’ll let you know. And they will be a trial, you understand your help will be required to send them to Azkaban where they belong ? » declared Mrs Weasley.
Ominis and I both nodded.

I let go reluctantly of her hand as I rose up. Valerian gave me a hug to soothe me, asking Ominis to join us, and it ended up to be a much bigger hug with all three of us squashed against eachother.
Despite feeling mournful, I was also grateful for this moment. Valerian had survived, we all did. Some were not so lucky as I spotted corpses laying on the floor.
We then let go of eachother and Cassandra embraced Valerian dearly, also looking appreciative, then it was Edmund’s turn.
« What now ? » I asked a bit downcast.
« Now, we rest. Tomorrow’s another day that will bring new problems. This isn’t over yet » told Valerian wisely.
She was refering to Haley’s funeral, or perhaps the deatheater’s trial. If we were to incarcerate Ominis’ parents , we’ll definitely need all our strength.
