Tutoring, Nagito and reader fluff (not really romantic but whatevs)

Nagito was late to lunch again. This wasn't unusual, of course. He usually avoided the lunch room as much as possible, wandering around the deserted elementary school hallways during lunch time until a teacher caught him and forced him to go.

He was caught earlier than usual this time, so now he would have to endure 25 minutes of embarrassing loneliness while his classmates chatted with their friends, friends that he had no idea how to make.

He trudged into the lunch room, gripping the straps to his backpack tightly as he made his way to his usual deserted table. Though, it wasn't deserted. There was a girl sitting there, in his usual seat, face buried in a book.

Nagito tilted his head, confused. Why was she there?

"Um... excuse me? I don't mean to bother you."

The girl lifted her face from the book, her e/c eyes red and puffy and leaving the pages stained with tears. She tilted her head as well, wiping furiously at her face. "Oh, sorry. Is this your table? I didn't think anyone sat here."

Nagito shook his head. "It's alright. I was just wondering if you were ok. I'm sorry to bother you."

"Eh... you're fine. I just-" She sighs dramatically and flops her head back down on the pages. "I hate math."

She lifted her head glared at the book. "Stupid multiplication. Third grade sucks."

"Multiplication?" Nagito looked at the book, curious.

"Yeah. I just don't get it! You can put more in or you can take it away, pick a side!" She exclaimed, slamming her fist. "Do you not get it either, or am I just helpless?"

Nagito shook his head. "You're not helpless, but I do understand it."

The girl huffed. "Of course you do." A thought strikes her, and she looks back at him, eyes hopeful. "Hey, since you understand it, can you help me?"

Nagito looked surprised. "I- I mean, there's probably someone more qualified that could help you out..."

She shook her head. "All the girls at my lunch table just laughed or ignored me. I don't think they like me. They say I study too much. And I think they think it's weird that I speak other languages."

Nagito didn't know what to say to that, so his mouth decided to take control instead. "I'll help you."

"Really?" The girl's face lit up, and she moved her school bag and lunch tray to make room. "I'm Y/n by the way."

"Nagito." Nagito introduced himself, timidly taking a seat next to her. "So, multiplication is a lot like addition..."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Nagito!" Nagito entered the lunch room ten minutes late to the sound of his name being called. There was Y/n again, sitting at his lunch table with a book open beside her. She was waving. Nagito glanced around to make sure she wasn't talking to someone else before approaching.

"Um... Hey, Y/n."

"Hi!" She gestured to the seat next to her. "How are you doing?"

"I- I'm fine." Nagito said, confused. "Uh... did you need something? More help with your math?"

"Huh? Oh, no, this is a Japanese to Korean dictionary. I'm trying to learn some more nouns. No, I just wanted to talk to you!" Y/n grinned. "Unless you have somewhere you wanna be. I didn't mean to keep you."

"No, no it's fine!" Nagito hurried to assure her, rubbing the back of his neck. "I don't really have a lunch table. I typically sit alone."

"Do you mind if I sit with you? I've been looking for a reason to ditch my old one for a while. They're mean." She smiled. Nagito looked taken aback but smiled too.

"I would love that, actually!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nagito showed up to the lunch room exactly on time, as usual, and made a beeline to his regular table. Y/n was buried in her Latin book, but looked up as he approached.

"Hey!"

"Hey."

Nagito sat, smiling and setting down his lunch box. "How's Latin class?"

"It's amazing! We just learned the first declension of nouns, and I'm getting a head start on the second one. High school is awesome!" She grinned, closing the book and setting it in her bag. Nagito shook his head.

"It's amazing how fast you pick up on languages."

She punched the air, almost knocking over her open water bottle, which Nagito caught. "Well, yeah! They won't call me the Ultimate Linguist for nothing! I'm gonna go to Hope's Peak, I just know it!"

Nagito chuckled. "You'll be the most beautiful beacon of hope to ever shine! Promise you won't forget me once you become an ultimate? Though I hardly know how I managed to become friends with someone as awesome as you in the first place."

She laughed. "It's because you're the best math tutor to ever walk the earth, that's how!" She pulled him into a hug. "And just because I'm gonna go to the best school EVER doesn't mean that I'll ever be better at math, so you better still be around to help me!"

Nagito laughed with her. "I'm not going anywhere. You're... you're my best friend, after all."

"You're damn right I am! And you're never ever ever getting rid of me!"

Nagito smiled. "I'm glad."
