The First Week (well two days)
Rowanne awoke early the next morning, when she'd come in last night all three girls had gone to bed, though Rowanne suspected Lily wasn't actually asleep. She glanced around the room, the sun shone in through the crack in the curtain, Rowanne noticed Robin lying in a clump on her bed, she hadn't heard her come up the previous night, though it wasn't like she'd stuck around to find out. She pulled herself out of bed, making her way into their shared bathroom.
The cold water felt nice on her skin, forcing Rowanne to awaken. It was different from the one at home, the water was colder and less came out. Probably different piping systems, she remembered the time she had accompanied Filch and Pomona out round the side of the North Tower to where the water congregated. Some weed had become tangled in it, resulting in the Slytherins not having water for a day or two. The smell was vile. As far as she was aware there were 7 separate systems, one for each house, one for Hagrid, one for the teachers and then another for all the other bathrooms.
She pulled herself out of the trace, wrapped herself in a towel and went to leave the bathroom. However when she opened the door she came face to face with an awkward Lily,
"Oh"
"Morning, sorry did the shower wake you?"
"No, it's okay. I wanted to get up early" Lily seemed frazzled, maybe Sirius was right and she actually didn't like her anymore, "Do you mind?" Lily gestured to the bathroom,
"No of course, go right ahead"
Lily pushed past, and Rowanne returned to her part of the room. The beds were laid out in a circle with hers next to the door, then Marlene's the window, Mary, then Robin opposite her sister with the door to the bathroom and Lily sandwiched between the two doors.
When Lily came out of the bathroom Rowanne, now dressed, went in. By the time she returned both Mary and Marlinne had awakened. Rowanne spent a while trying to get Robin to wake up but as the rest of the girls were ready she gave up, following them down to breakfast.
"Mum? What are you doing here?" McGonagall stood in the doorway to the portrait hole, watching the other students coming out of their dormitories.
"I just wanted to check all of the first years were up and adjusted" Rowanne was certain that didn't normally happen, but she knew exactly where her mother was going,
"Robin's still in bed, I can't get her to get up. I don't know how you do it" Rowanne sighed,
A slight smile appeared on McGonagall's face, unnoticed by the rest of the Gryffindors, "I'll go get her up, she'll join you in the Great Hall, Rowanne come with me"
The rest of the group left, making their way down for breakfast. Rowanne ran a little to catch up with McGonagall who was already gliding up the stairs.
"You came for Robin didn't you" Rowanne asked cheekily,
"I don't know what your talking about"
"Awww you miss us"
"I don't know what your talking about"
"Yeah you do"
"Rowanne"
"Okay, okay"
"So how was your evening?"
"Not much happened, I went straight to bed. It was late by the time we got back"
"You better not have got skulking round the castle after curfew"
"No it was your fault. No one told us the password! Stop smirking, it wasn't funny. Mum!" Rowanne chided, "At least Uncle Albus let us-," McGonagall gave her a stern glance, "Sorry, Professor Dumbledore. He gave us sweets as well"
"Oh course he did" She shook her head, though i suddenly dawned on her, "Say he didn't happen to award you points at all"
"Yeah why?"
"No reason" She opened up the door, "Robin!"
The young girl in bed shot up, staring intently at her mother, "Mum! What the heck"
"Get dressed, chop chop"
"I'll be up after breakfast"
"No, you'll be up for breakfast. Come on"
"But-"
"No buts Robin or I'll make you get up"
"Ugh fine!" Robin clambered out of bed, dragging herself across the room and into the bathroom.
"But how" Rowanne stared in awe at her mother,
"Well it's not normally that seemless I can't lie," McGonagall chuckled, remembering the countless arguments she'd had with Robin about getting out of bed, "I think I was lucky. Had the element of surprise on my side" Rowanne chuckled as Robin entered from the bathroom,
"What's so funny" she asked as she gathered her clothes to get changed,
"Nothing" McGonagall smiled, turning back to Rowanne "The easiest method is tickling, that's bound to work"
"Hey, you better not be telling her how to wake me up are you?" Robin asked, outraged, Pulling her robes over her shoulders
"Of course I am. And I better see you at breakfast every morning else I'm coming up here to get you up myself"
"Ugh" Robin sighed, pulling on her socks. "Ready" She declared, beginning to walk out the door, though she was stopped by Minerva who straightened her tie.
"Good let's go"
The trio left Gryffindor tower, walking down the stairs and taking a shortcut through the staff quarters before coming down a small flight of stairs and then down the larger ones opposite the Great Hall.
The girls bid goodbye to their mother, McGonagall reminding Robin that her first detention was on Friday evening. They walked over to the table, talking with their friends. Mcgonagall made her way past them and to the teacher's table where Pomona and Rolanda sat eyeing her as they spoke in hushed whispers.
"Are you feeling better than last night Minerva?"
"I don't know what your talking about Madam hooch"
"Saw you come in with the twins, did you talk to them"
"Pomona, it's all good!"
"You really weren't yourself yesterday"
"You convinced me to open the bottle of vodka I found in Andromeda Black's bag, me not feeling myself is on you" McGonagall scouled,
"I meant about the twins"
"They're fine, settled" she said dismissively
"But your not"
"It's good having them out of the house"
"That's not what you said yesterday and you know it" Rolanda pressed,
"I'm fine. It's all good"
"Can't say Poppy's feeling too good" Pomona joked,
"I told her not to open the bottle of wine, that was the first mistake. You never mix you alcohol"
"Oh come now Minerva, just because you're the queen of hangovers. Here you are Poppy, a good full English will set you right" Rolanda put her hand on the back of her friend, seating her in between her and Pomona,
"How is it, that despite the hundreds of spells we have for healing injuries, there isn't one for a bloody hangover!" She grumbled
"Oh, eat up. You'll feel better, I can go and get some bowtruckles, that always sets me right" Pomona said enthusiastically
"I prefer an early morning fly, seems to brush right off me" Rolanda smiled
"I think I'll pass, Minerva?" Poppy asked hopefully
"I just take aspirin and put my hair up tight," She, having been raised in a muggle household, was used to their strangely efficient methods. It was what her mother used.
"What's aspirin?"
"I thought you were a healer?" Mcgonagall rolled her eyes, she wasn't in the mood to be helpful, eyes contiuously flicking toward the Gryffindor first years.
"Right now I'm not, I need to be healed"
"Fine, I'll get some and bring them down to you before class" She relented as she watched her children walk out of the hall, not even looking back.
Robin and Rowanne sat down, the world seemed to turn around them as Rowanne stared at her timetable, barely taking in the words. She looked at her schedule:
Today the Gryffindors had:
Double flying, charms, history of magic and double potions again.
She turned to Lily, about to make a joke about their history of magic class, but she seemed to be engrossed in something. Rowanne looked to where she was staring, the four boys were having a competition about how many whole strawberries they could fit in their mouths. It looked like Peter was winning, especially since James and Sirius were fighting over the strawberries.
Finally the bell rang, Rowanne looked down at her plate, she’d completely forgotten to put food on it. She grabbed a slice of toast heading after the others for their next lesson.
Flying was certainly not Rowanne’s strong point. Luckily it seemed as though they were at least starting on the ground. Madam Hooch explained how to summon your broom to you. Of course James’ broom shot up instantly, closely followed by Robin’s with Marlene’s then Sirius. After a while, Mary and Peter’s brooms came up. So out of the Gryffindor’s only Rowanne, Remus and Lily’s brooms wiggled on the ground. Eventually Lily’s broom came up. She shot a proud glance at the boy next to her, Severus, before noticing James who was yelling in congratulations. Finally Remus came up, so now out of everyone it was just Rowanne remaining. She yelled “UP!” again and again,
“With more purpose, Miss McGonagall” Madam Hooch pressed,
“Come on Rowanne you got this” Sirius called,
“Just say up!”
“Nah really!” Rowanne shot a look at her sister, who had spoken
“It’s not that hard” She shrugged,
Rowanne ignored her, instead turning to the girl next to her. But Lily just looked away, Rowanne thought she saw her roll her eyes, odd. However her attention was grabbed by James, Robin and Sirius, who were having an argument about which position was best in quidditch. Rowanne looked away again, “UP!” The broom shakily levitated into her hand. Thank Merlin for that.
“Excellent” Madam Hooch addressed the class, as Robin told the boys it was her instruction that helped, “You may now mount your brooms”
The lesson continued, it didn’t seem as though either Robin or James were impressed with the lack of flying, launching into countless arguments about who could fly the fastest, or furthest, or do the best tricks. It was getting annoying, very annoying. But Rowanne tried to ignore it, making conversation with a distant Lily. Nope didn’t seem like she wanted to talk to her either. Rowanne sighed, feeling out of place.
They eventually finished the double; these lessons were going to be the death of Rowanne, but they made their way out of the changing rooms, just as the bell went for the next movement. Charms, excellent.
Rowanne sat at the end of the desk, she was on the second tier of the choir style desks. It was five to a row and of course Robin had left her alone, choosing to sit next to James below. On their way in, Mary and Marlinne had been ahead and they’d slipped in at the back line, Lily following them. But when she and Robin, well she was more on her own- Robin had mainly walked with the boys- came into the room the desk below the girls had filled up fast. Peter wanted to be in the corner, she could see a glint in his eyes, as if he wanted to sit next to James, but Remus had slid in next to him, then Sirius, James and finally Robin.
“Good morning class” Fillius smiled from the top of his pile of books,
“Good morning professor” most of the class said back,
“Hi Uncle Fi Fi” Robin called, Rowanne expected him to say something, but he just smiled at her.
“Today we are going to be practicing wand movements”
The lesson was much more boring than Robin had expected, she hoped that she would at least learn a spell or two, but they just spent the time twiddling the sticks around in the air. Although when Peter had poked Remus in the eye it was hilarious to see his angry reaction. Sirius had to hold him back from tearing the poor boy apart. Remus seemed different after that, even more withdrawn than he was before, not even looking anyone in the eye.
Rowanne had hoped that in this lesson she’d be able to have a conversation with Lily, she'd hoped Lily would need help or something and she'd be able to talk to her, resolve whatever it was between them. But apparently that wasn't the case. Lily turned out to be rather adept at charms. She held her wand with ease, earning over the lesson 10 points for Gryffindor.
They made their way to History of Magic, the ghostly professor was boring to Robin and the boys. This time she sat next to Rowanne in the middle back row, constantly chucking paper airplanes across the classroom with the boys. The professor was one of the only people Robin called "sir" he had always maintained a 'teacher' stance with the girls, and they'd never really formed a relationship with him so to them he was just another teacher that taught them history.
"Can anyone tell me who the four founding fathers of Hogwarts are?" The professor asked. Both Lily and Rowanne raised their hands. He looked at Rowanne before turning to Lily, "Yes miss?"
"Evans sir, Lily Evans" The girl said with confidence, "The four founding wizards of Hogwarts are Rowena Ravencalw, Salazar Slyherin, Helga Hufflefuff and Godric Gryffindor"
"That is correct, five points to Gryffindor" Rowanne stared at Lily, she thought she saw the girl begin to turn around, but her head whipped back into place almost the minute their eyes came into contact with the other,
"Sir why did they do it?" Robin queeried as Rowanne turned to her sister, confused
"Do what Miss McGonagall"
"Create the school. They just condemned us to this life of torture" There was a chuckle among the students, esspecially behind them and to thier left where Sirius and James were sat.
Rowanne bowed her head, embarrassed, as the professor tried to work out what Robin had meant.
"I, I I don't understand" the class burst into even more laughter, "it's a school. They built a school"
"I know sir"
"Then why would you wonder why" he really wasn't catching on,
"I think she's asking why they did it" Rowanne tried to salvage the situation, "what made them think a school was needed"
"Maybe they just liked children" Robin piped in, cockier than usual,
"Robin shut it" Rowanne hissed, while James and Sirius could hardly contain themselves. In fact most of the class was laughing,
"I'm sure they did like children" the professor chimed in, not understanding what he was saying. The damage was done, and for the rest of the lesson no one could concentrate.
They walked out of the class, Sirius and James raving about Robin. Rowanne rolled her eyes, it certainly wasn't impressive to her. They sat at the Gryffindor table just as lunch appeared. Three or four Gryffindors came up to congratulate Robin, and sometimes Rowanne, on the prank Robin had pulled the day before.
They had double potions and as they walked down the dungeons they were approached by even more students. Rowanne certainly wasn't happy. All she wanted was for the day to be over and to find herself safely in the common room. Away from James, Sirius, Robin, and Lily, who had done nothing but scowl at her, Robin and the boys all day.
Finally potions ended, meaning Rowanne could leave. It may have sounded silly to the others, but she had homework due the next day. Professor Gonnoline's assignment still sat untouched among her school things upstairs. She decided simply that she would go back to the common room, leaving behind the bustle of the school. Although things didn't go to plan as Remus, who had barely said a word since they got there, decided to join her on her walk back.
"Hey, are you alright?" He asked quietly, cearly afraid to speak,
"What yeah of course. Look, you didn't need to come back with me. I don't want you to miss out on anything"
"It's okay" He seemed to smile, that was the first time she'd seen him smile, "Unless of course you want me to go"
"It's fine. As long as you don't start going on about how amazing Robin is and how awesome the annoying prank was, or suddenly stop talking to me and start acting like you dont like me. Just needed to get away from it all you know"
"I get it, I can't take them anymore either. Imagine what it's like sharing a room with them!" Rowanne chuckled, Remus seemed to be building his confidence, turning to her and placing his hand on his heart, "I solemnly swear that your sister is not in any way incredible or amazing"
She laughed harder now, "Thanks. Really, I appreciate it"
He seemed to light up at the girl's words, "So do you think you'd fancy being friends with me?" He asked nervously,
"Of course, I'd love to" They came to the portrait hole, "Leonis Inuba" It opened and the two made their way inside, they sat down at an empty set of chairs. The room was rather empty, most people wanting to spend what little time they could out in the summer sun. They worked silently on their separate projects, occasionally stopping so Rowanne could explain a part of the History Of Magic assignment which was to write a report on the four founding fathers of Hogwarts. Something that had practically been a bedtime story to her as a child and she knew she could recite the entire thing from memory.
After an hour, Lily, Mary and Marlene made their own way into the common room, discussing a prank Robin had decided to play on Snape outside. Lily kept glancing over, so did Rowanne, it was disrupting her focus. She could feel the 3 pairs of beady eyes glaring at her, whispers creeping into her ears, though the words were indistinguishable.
"Come on, let's go" She got up, catching Remus off guard,
"Ummm, yeah sure. Where do you want to go"
"Library" She stated, picking up her books and making her way out of the common room, Remus trailed after her, running a little to catch up.
They arrived at the library, Rowanne walking over to her normal table in the back corner. She settled down, focusing back on her work.
"Hey, I've finished the homework we got today. You don't happen to have a reading book do you"
Rowanne looked up, she'd been staring at the same page for 5 minutes, completely confused about how to condense it into note form, "Not with me but the fiction section is over that way. There are hundreds of topics, I'm sure one will tickle your fancy" She listened to her own words back in her head as he nodded and walked away, god she sounded like her mother.
He returned and nestled himself in the window seat, enjoying the peace and quiet. He liked the others, James made an effort to include him and Peter in his and Sirius' antics and they had a laugh. The previous night they'd stayed up until past midnight, just playing truth or dare. However as much as he liked them they were loud and disruptive. Sirius and Peter had siblings so he and James were the odd ones out, and his parents hadn't done him any favors in keeping him so isolated all his life. He'd had friends, but they'd always been torn away from him before he could get too close. His father said it was because he was dangerous, that he would hurt anyone around him. Perhaps that was true, perhaps he should keep his distance, for them, for their safety. But was it all about them? He'd been hurt so many times, pushed away, rejected, taken. He couldn't get close, if he did he'd end up hurting them, he always did.
Rowanne focused hard. This had to work, that stupid piece of cheese had to accept it. She shook her head, 'piece of cheese who the hell are you kidding’. That little voice was back. It’d been there all her life, but she’d hidden it away, tried to keep it locked up. She pushed her pen to paper, 'just go for it. No point being a baby' ugh!
Half an hour later however they were interrupted by three loud and disruptive boys. Madam Pince came out of her office, 'oh dear, this isn't going to be good' Rowanne sighed,
"No running in the library!" She yelled,
"We're sorry, just excited” James beamed at her, Rowanne thought she saw her cold smirk falter, but it didn't last long.
"Out!" She said sharply
"We'll leave in just a moment, only wanted these to idiots to join us for dinner" James still beamed,
"Yeah, complete dorks, day 1 and they're already hitting the books" Sirius joined in, sticking his tongue out.
"If you aren't gone in two minutes I'll be back" She said harshly, turning on her heels to leave,
"She seems nice" James smiled,
"She's terrifying" Peter cowered,
"Come on you two, it's dinner and I'm starving" Sirius walked over to Remus, pulling his out of the seat and putting his arm over his shoulder,
"Fine, we're coming" Remus smiled, he felt better, lighter after spending some time with Rowanne, just to himself.
"You guys go, I gotta hand this in tomorrow" Rowanne smiled,
"What do you mean, we got no homework to hand in until next week?" James asked,
"Yeah come and get some food" Peter smiled,
"It's okay, I've gotta do this" Rowanne began to ignore them,
"You've gotta eat" She shrugged,
"Are you okay?"
"of course"
"Do you want us to get Robin?"
"Definitely not"
"What about your mum"
"I'm good, go and get some food before we're all banned from the library for a week"
"Want us to bring you some back?"
"Sure" She hoped that would be enough, "I bet I'll be finished before dinner ends anyway"
Her patience was thinning, as it had the whole day. At least it wasn't Robin or god forbid Minerva.
"Okay, we'll let you get on" James decided, "Come on lads, roll out" He twiddled his fingers above his head and pointed at the door as he set off in a determined march.
They left her in peace, and she turned back to her work. 'Not hungry?' A voice asked her, her stomach started growling, 'Thought so' It said cockily, 'So why is baby Rowanne not eating this time? What's your excuse? Not hungry? Too busy? No, no. So why Rowanne, why?' She knew, she always knew, the voice knew, she just didn't want to admit it. Lily, Robin, James, Sirius, Peter, Mary, Marlene. Remus seemed alright but she just couldn't take it. Everything was changing, she didn't like change, hated it, with a passion. She couldn't keep up, it was too much. She just wanted everything to go back to how it was, just Robin, Minerva and her. 'Well there's no point throwing a hissy fit' No there wasn't that was stupid, 'you're being selfish' she was, no one made this decision it just happened.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the stern librarian, "Good, they left" Rowane smirked, "I think they'll be trouble, will you keep an eye on them for me?"
"Of course,"
"Now the question is, why aren't you at dinner?"
"I have some homework to complete"
"Hmmm, well either they're overworking the first years or you're overworking yourself"
"When have I ever done that?" Rowanne smiled innocently,
"Since the day I caught you trying to reach a sixth year book from the top shelf at age 5"
Rowanne began to protest, but they both knew she was correct,
"You should eat though"
"Have you seen the meals here! I can eat for a year just at breakfast"
"Hmmmm"
"Please, just let me finish this. I promise I'll get some food later. If not the boys said they'd save me something"
Madam Prince pursed her lips, considering the proposal, "Fine, but if not I go straight to Minerva"
"I wouldn't expect any less." The older woman walked away, leaving Rowanne to her work. Blissful silence washed over her, allowing her to focus
But it was short lived as her other half came tip toeing into the library. Robin knew not to run, she also knew she could have some fun with this. She knew Rowanne's favorite spot, and how the girl was impossible to disturb when in deep study mode. She crept round behind her, pushing her shoulder's violently forward.
Rowanne accepted the movement, catching herself before her head hit the desk. "Robin! Go away" She hissed. Her sister just pulled up the chair next to her, sitting so she was facing the back, straddling the seat.
"Watchya doin" She asked, raising an eyebrow,
"I'm finishing up some notes for Professor Gonolinne tomorrow" She sighed,
"Really, thought you'd be knee deep in textbooks about the Whomping Willow"
"Think I haven't tried?" She asked, slightly annoyed,
"You have, when the hell did you have the time"
"Is the mighty Robin impressed by something"
"I guess a tad, well done, you broke me"
Rowanne chuckled,
"So what do we have"
"To be blunt, nothing"
"Nothing!"
"No but I've only looked in my personal books, there's nothing in herbology about it, or Care Of Magical Creatures"
"Well it's not going to be there is it!" Robin sighed, "I'm officially no longer impressed,"
"Oh shut it. It was a good enough place to start"
"I guess. Do you have any ideas?"
"Not exactly, might be linked to the war though"
"Yeah I'm still confused on that"
"It's just old prejudices coming to the forefront"
"About blood"
"Yeah, whether you're muggle born or not"
"What are we?"
"Well mum's half blood. I don't know who are father is, let alone what blood type he is'' Rowanne explained, getting rather agitated by the constant interruption
"So we don't know"
"Essentially yes"
"He could be a muggle!" Robin suddenly realized,
"He could be Professor Gonnoline. We have no idea"
Robin chuckled, then shuddered, "You have his nose"
"Hilarious" she deadpanned,
"Okay okay. You better come for dinner though, I got yelled at for missing breakfast, you know mum'll be pissed if you don't show up at dinner"
"I guess," she relented. Robin was right and she couldn't be bothered to incur McGonagall's wrath, not right now.
The next day, they awoke with no differences. Lily still behaved cold and distant, Robin was as difficult as ever. But today was definitely going to be eventful. Rowanne wasn’t quite sure how to look at it. Transfiguration with her mother and astronomy with a man that pushed her past her limits. At least herbology would be nice and easy, but transfiguration! If she was honest with herself she was probably looking forward to it. She’d never seen her mum teach before, and there was something about knowing that she wasn’t going to be alone there. As for astronomy, well that she was petrified for. If Professor Gonnoline was this bad in private, what would he be like in front of the entire class.
As the clock ticked further towards transfiguration, Rowanne got more nervous. She wasn’t sure about Robin though. Robin seemed to be completely unaware that they were even about to be taught by Minerva. Though inside, not sharing it with the others she was as ambivalent as Rowanne. On the one hand this was their mother, and she was already in trouble, McGonagall accepted no prisoners and Robin knew she was in for a difficult lesson. But on the other hand this was going to be fun. Getting on McGonagall's nerves had to be Robin's favorite pastime and she knew exactly what buttons to push.
"Good morning everyone" she addressed the class, "this is transfiguration where you will learn to change objects into other objects. Now this can be very difficult and so in the first year we focus on turning certain objects into other objects. While these smaller spells are much easier, it also means that sometimes you'll put too much into it and the spell will work more than you intended. That is okay, you are allowed to make mistakes. However disobedience will not be tolerated" she narrowed her eyes at Robin.
McGonagall set them off on the task, turning a matchstick into a needle. However after countless attempts, it was seeming impossible and the class were becoming bored.
James whispered across the aisle at Robin, "Oi, watch this" he glanced over checking McGonagall was still looking at her work. Before he picked up the matchstick and threw it upwards, attempting to change it mid air. It failed miserably and a worm flopped, wriggling around on Robin's lap.
"Hey, pass the worm" she called, causing McGonagall to look up, just as Robin flung the worm from her own desk and towards Peter and Remus'. Remus levertated it back over towards the desk it came from, accidentally landing on Sirius' head. He screamed like a girl, causing Mary and Marlene to start laughing, along with most of the Slytherins and Gryffindors. But Peter was too occupied as the worm came hurling towards him thanks to Sirius' shakes.
Peter yelped, ducking as it hit Severus in the face behind him. Lily glared at the boy, pulling it off him. However as she he snatched it off her and chucked it towards the twins desk, directly at Rowanne. Luckily for her however by this time McGonagall was done. She turned the worm back into a matchstick and as it landed in Rowanne’s hair she plucked it out. Placing it back on James’ desk, a stern look plastered across her face.
“Hey! Mum, why did you ruin the fun?” Robin winned
“Never, in all my years of teaching, have I had a first lesson quite like this” McGonagall decided to ignore the girl
“Aww thanks mum. Glad you enjoyed it”
“You know full well I am not happy about this Robin” She chided, voice shaking,
“Geez, lighten up. We were just having a bit of fun”
“Robin. I do not expect anyone, let alone you, to be throwing worms around in my classroom”
“You didn’t care last time” She shrugged, knowing how much it would anger her mother that Robin didn’t fold nor seem affected by her,
But McGonagall was too quick. She had seen this happen before, from students and Robin herself, “Last time you were five and I was too preoccupied with taking you to the hospital wing because you’d eaten the worm” Robin looked down embarrassed, “What no comeback? Shame. We’ll discuss this at your detention tonight young lady”
The lesson droned on. Things were quiet from then. No one had been able to change their matchstick into the correct thing, Rowanne had got it a few times, but her mother was too distracted to see and honestly, Rowanne didn’t care.
Herbology finally rolled around and Rowanne was happy to be away from the classroom. What she wanted more than anything was to forget about school and lessons. Nothing made sense, why was Robin being so insufferable? Why did Lily hate her? Why was everything changing?
Robin was further ahead with James, Sirius, Remus and Peter. They were talking about the lessons they'd had. Rowanne couldn't understand why they were admiring Robin so much, all it was doing was pushing her to do more.
Finally they reached the greenhouses where herbology took place, taking their seats Robin sat next to Rowanne as she seemed to always do while the boys took respective seats at the back. This time Peter sat next to James while Remus and Sirius sat together.
“Really you two” “it's going to be impossible to tell you apart” Proffessor Sprout adressed the twins,
“It's simple really Auntie Pom Pom, she's the sweat and I'm the rebel. Should be rather deductible”
“I’m not going to treat either of you differently Miss McGonagall”
The lesson continued, though after a while Robin had a question,
"Auntie Pom Pom?"
"Robin professor now, yes?"
"Sorry professor pom pom" The class erupted into laughter, led mainly by the boys,
"Robin go on, get out of the room”
"Geez since when did you stop having a sense of humor”
"Since I now owe your mother a butterbeer now go on off you go” Robin sighed, leaving the room.
"Professor"
"Yes Rowanne"
"Why do you owe mum, I mean Professor McGonagall, a butter beer?"
“Rowanne if you want the answer to that you can see me after class” She narrowed her eyes at the girl. This wasn’t the aunt she’d known her whole life, the woman who took her to movies and fought her battles with Minerva, this was someone different. Just another change.
Professor Sprout went right back to her sunny ways for the rest of the class however Rowanne sunk down in her chair, continuing with the task and not speaking for the rest of the lesson. But she was the last out, and Professor Sprout caught her just before she left.
“I made a bet, and that's all I’m saying on the matter”
Rowanne smiled and turned around, "surprised you haven't worked out by now that mum never makes bets unless she knows she’ll win them"
“Yeah well just because I knew doesn't mean I do” she looked around, seemingly confused by what she meant herself,
“Robin does the same”
“Don't I know it. Now run along or you'll be late for your next lesson”
Astronomy. Shoot, she couldn't be late. Rowanne said goodbye to the professor and sprinted out of the room. She had to get from the greenhouse to the top of the astronomy tower. In only- she managed to capture a glimpse of the clock- 10 minutes. Crap.
She managed to get there just as the clock ticked to 12.
“You were almost late Miss McGonagall” a snide voice greeted her as the door slammed shut behind her.
Rowanne walked over to where her sister sat, “wait” Rowanne sighed, ‘really sir?’ she thought. “I will create a plan of where I want you all to sit” he looked around the room. Splitting everyone into pairs.
Lilly and Rowanne were the only pair of girls. Then there was Sirius and Mary; Peter and Robin; and James and Remus.
Rowanne and Lily sat directly in front of Professor Gonelline's desk, Peter and Robin to their left and Remus and James to their right. With Sirius and Marlene a few rows behind. The slytherins sat intermittently, boy-girl on the second and fourth row.
Professor Gonnolinne began the class, strict and unnerving. He barked at the students for making any form of noise during his tirade of information. Expecting them to make notes. But as the lesson wore on Rowanne noticed she knew all of this stuff already. It was the first five chapters she’d revised the night before. Still she made diligent notes, not wanting to let him down. Half way through the lesson however he stopped and told everyone to take out their textbooks. Expecting them to fill in the gaps in their notes. But again, Rowanne had already done this.
Apparently that hadn’t gone unnoticed by the professor who called her up to his desk. She rose, feeling the eyes of the entire class staring at her in confusion. “Do you have what I asked you to bring?”
“Yes Professor” She handed him her five pages of notes. One for each chapter. He looked them over, but glanced at the other students, yelling at them to continue thier work. He looked back down at the pages. “They are almost as bad as before” She gulped, waiting for him to tear the sheets in half or something, “But they will surfice” He handed them back. “You can begin the first draft of your homework essay. Stay after class for me to check in over” She nodded, returning to her seat, begging her eyes not to let the tears that wanted to flow come. ‘Your pathetic’ The voice said, ‘can’t even take a but of criticism’ she shook her head, focusing hard on the page before her.
The end of class came and she did as she was told, waiting behind for him. Robin, who for the first time since they began had behaved didn’t seem to care. She left her sister to catch up with the others. But maybe that was for the best, ‘She doesn’t owe you anything’ It was back, ‘Stop fooling yourself that you're worth it. You’re not’ She closed her eyes, forcing the tears back. But when she came out of the class it felt like there was no point in holding it in. She couldn’t anymore. But not here, out in the open. Lunch didn’t matter, Robin didn’t matter. All that mattered was getting somewhere safe.
Luckily for Rowanne there was a bathroom right next to her. She ducked inside, then into a cubicle. The paice of parchment now full of red scribles crumpled in her grasp. Her leg began to shake and eyes filled with tears. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t do anything. Rowanne sunk to the floor, head in her legs. Nothing was how it should be. ‘see what I told you. pathetic. pathetic, pathetic, pathetic’ the voice taunted. ‘not right now’ she tried to push it aside. ‘can’t get rid of me that easily’ it cackled with laughter, ‘youll never get rid of me. And you know why. Because I’m right. I always have been’ it crumbled, still there, but lurking in the back of her mind. Letting her die alone in the bathroom stall.
“Hehehehehe” A young girl cackled, “Oooo what do we have here?”
“Murtle go away” Rowanne called to the ghost,
“Make me” She smiled gleefully,
“Please, I cant do this right now” That seemed to shut the ghost up. She had seen Rowanne upset before, the girls had been close since Murtle allowed Rowanne to hide in her stall while running away from Robin,
“Did you want me to get someone?” She asked, her normal demeanor dropping slightly,
“What do you think” Rowanne shot,
“Well if your going to be like that then I won’t” She huffed, diving down into the bathroom and splashing Rowanne all over with water.
“Great. Thanks for that” The evil cackle could still be heard. Rowanne checked the time, she still had enough to get up to Gryffindor tower and change.
Pulling herself up she stared at her face in the mirror, ‘God I look a mess’ she thought, drying her eyes and making a run for it.
Finally she made it to Gryffindor tower without anyone seeing. The first bit of luck she’d had all day. She pulled on a fresh pair of robes and brushed her hair. If only her mother would let the girls have make-up, maybe she’d be able to get rid of the bags under her eyes.
Rowanne walked over to Robin’s washbag. She knew she’d stolen some from their mother, but she had no idea where it was. Finally she found some, brushing the cream powder under her eyes and walking out of the room. She checked the time, it wasn’t long before Defence Against The Dark Arts would begin.
She arrived at the classroom with a few minutes to spare. Robin was bouncing happily in her place, clearly excited for the lesson. Once again a new teacher had been employed after that last one had been let go because of his opinions on werewolves. Alb hadn’t wanted any prejudice in his school, and every teacher had to know about Remus’s condition, if not then they’d soon find out.
The new professor seemed quite nice. Perhaps trying to be too nice but she he seemed alright. Robin and James had been on tenterhooks the entire lesson asking question apon question. Rowanne just stayed towards the back. All she wanted was for this lesson to end. She knew she had to talk to someone. In fact she knew exactly who she needed to talk to.
This feeling was unbearable, she missed her. ‘that’s stupid you saw her earlier today’ Ugh, the voice was back. But it was right, it was stupid, right? The stupidity of it didn’t matter however, none of it mattered. All she wanted was to hug her mother, cry. She needed it. It didn’t make sense, the woman was right there, but it wasn’t the same. ‘You need your mummy? pitifully feeble’
Finally, it was over. The lesson had ended. Rowanne sprinted out of the classroom, barely acknowledging her sister who watched in confusion. She ran down the corridor and across to the stairs, going up a flight and turning left towards the transfiguration classroom. But she stopped outside the door. Suddenly she didn’t feel relief or happiness to be knocking here, but fear. What would her mother say? Would she be angry? The voice was saying she would, that she’d be dissappointed in Rowanne. So she just stood there, frozen in place.
Rowanne’s behaviour since the beginning of school hadn’t gone unnoticed by her sister. Robin had left Rowanne to her own devices. She wanted to be different, and she was enjoying the praise she got from James and Sirius. They looked up to her, not down like everyone else had her entire life. It was true she wasn’t a model student like Rowannne but she wasn’t the devil. And the way everyone looked at her, the other teachers, Rowanne, even her own mother, just hurt her. Shattering her heart each time. Why bother trying if no one expects you to?
But there was one thing she cared about more than anything in the world. Rowanne. Only she could bully her sister. Rowanne was the best person she knew. She was everyhting Robin wasn’t, smart, kind, caring, selfless. How dare Lily treat her this way. She stormed up to Gryffindor comman room after the three other girls in their house. They were sitting around a table by the fire, just getting out their books.
“Look I get it but you don't have to be so harsh on Rowanne” She was angry, and it showed in her voice.
“What are you talking about” Lily looked up indignantly,
“I know your mad because of what she said at dinner”
“I'm not mad”
“Well you seem it. Look Rowanne normally does a very good job of minding what she says, and thinking of others. But sometimes she just doesn't quite reach the mark. She's exactly like mum in that respect. But her and mum would never intent to hurt your feelings”
“I know, I just thought she kinda understood, well everything really” Lily looked down, suddenly feeling very embarassed about how she’d been treating Rowanne,
“It's silly to expect one person to understand everything and not make mistakes. My sister isn't perfect, I have scars to prove it, but she damn does try” Robin glared down at the girl on the sofa. No one hurt Rowanne, not on her watch. In Robin’s opinion Rowanne was the best person alive, she was everything she herself wasn’t, “I was there when she was trying to work out how those blumin tables worked. She actually asked mum first but she was no help. But that doesn't mean she gave up. She asked the house-elves, Uncle Alb- not that he gave a straight answer- before she combed every book in the library for answers. It took her months before she understood it. When she did she did something I don't think I've ever seen Rowanne do before, she stole mum's wand and practiced performing similar spells. Not saying she was any good, we were 8 her wand skills were well pretty atrocious, though she was further along that me”
“You two have used wands before coming to hogwarts?” Marlene asked,
“If mum was in a good mood, or Fillius and sometimes Dumbedore were watching us. Look, my point is lay off Ro, she made a mistake. You'd be lucky to call her your friend”
“you really care about her'' Mary stated, seemingly confused. Lily however still looked down embarassed,
“Of course I do” Robin foleded her arms, “When it comes to Ro I'd do anything. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm late to detention” She turned on her heels, marching out of the comman room,
The three girls looked between eachother. Maybe there was more to Robin than they’d first thought.
There was a knock at the door, McGonagall looked up from her papers, "come in"
"Hi mum" Rowanne peered round the door cautiously, unsure of how to behave.
"Hello munchkin" McGonagall's face softened, giving Rowanne the all clear to enter. She closed the door behind her, taking a seat on the other side of her mother's desk, "just let me finish this. I won't be a minute" Minerva watched as her daughter nodded, glancing down and twiddling her fingers. She was still the same, "there are some matchsticks over there if you want to practice what we did in class today" Rowanne smiled, jumping up to get herself one.
By the time McGonagall had finished the paper, Rowanne had turned the matchstick into a needle, "Well done" she winked at her daughter, leaning back in her chair to study the girl, "Now the difficult part is turning it back" she took out her wand, silently casting it back into a matchstick to be returned to the pile, "Now how about we head back our quarters, be more comfortable"
Rowanne nodded as she got up, following her mother out of the classroom. Still not looking her in the eyes, which didn't go unnoticed. McGonagall watched Rowanne carefully out of the corner of her eye as they went through the magical door behind her desk that accessed their quarters.
"tabby" It opened a crack. The two took their seats on the sofa, Rowanne nestled into her mother.
"Everything okay dear?" McGonagall asked,
"Yeah, just all a bit weird" Rowanne avoided her mother's eyes,
"Oh yes, and why's that"
"Well not sleeping in my own bed, sitting at the top table. Being just another student," Rowanne finally looked at her mother's face, "yeah I know it's stupid, you don't have to give me that look" she rolled her eyes as a smile creeped into the sides of McGonagall's face.
"I know it's all different, but maybe that's not something to be scared of?" McGonagall asked, waiting for her daughter to come to her own conclusion,
"Maybe, I just didn't want it all to change, you know, I liked how it was. Now a bunch of people seem to think I pulled that bloomin thing Robin did off, Lily doesn't like me anymore and Robin's acting really weird, like weirder than normal weird" she pulled away to face McGonagall, "And then teachers don't seem to like us anymore I've got a lot of homework, everything's different but for some reason everything's still the same and that makes it all worse"
"Maybe start by breathing" McGonagall smirked, Rowanne chuckled, shaking her head.
"Come here munchkin" she wrapped her arm around her youngest daughter, "One by one. People only think you were involved because you look like your sister and well you are sisters, it's nothing to worry about. I thought you might be involved. Teachers don't hate you, they've just become your teachers, not uncles and aunts. They need to be different for the first lesson, I'm sure they'll be back to loving you soon. Because honestly, who couldn't love you" Rowanne chuckled as McGonagall pecked her on the head, "You love homework so I don't think that's going to be an issue for you, and well the changes, there's not much I can do about that unfortunately. There are some downsides there always will be, but focus on the positive yeah?"
"Yeah" Rowanne smiled,
"Now Lily, I'm going to need more information on that one"
"Well we were fine, and then she asked how the food came onto the tables, and I kinda explained it so she sorta understood it but she wanted to know more. But, but she wouldn't understand"
"And you told her that?" McGonagall placed her hand on her head, a smile appearing behind it,
"Well yeah" Minerva chuckled, "Mum! It's not funny, she's barely looked at me since"
"I'm sorry hunny. Just you have to see it from her perspective, it sounds like your insulting her"
Rowanne opened her mouth to protest, but the more she thought about it the more she realized her mother was correct. "Ugh! I didn't mean to"
"I know dear, I know"
"How do I fix it?"
"Maybe facing the situation head on? Just apologize and acknowledge your mistake"
"That'll work?"
"It's worth a shot"
"Okay, thanks mum" Rowanne slumped back into her shoulders,
"And what were you saying about Robin?"
"Just the way she's been acting. Like with you, she won't shut up" Rowanne rolled her eyes, "it's insufferable, she seems to think she's invincible or exempt from the rules or both and I can't take it anymore, she's not my sister"
"She'll always be your sister, you can't change that" McGonagall stroked Rowanne's hair, "but I think her behavior is partly my fault"
"What! Mum, of course it isn't"
"No wait, I've been thinking about this. I, we haven't put proper boundaries in place" she picked her words carefully, "I havent really spoken to you or Robin about how all of this is going to work, the parent/teacher thing"
"Yeah but still-"
"Give me a chance munchkin" McGonagall smiled, "You both need clear boundaries, when do I stop being your mother and start being you teacher"
"But what's that going to mean?"
"Well I'm not sure, how about we put our heads together and come up with something?"
"Sounds good"
"Well I think conversations like this should be kept to our quarters, not the classroom" Rowanne nodded along, "And if they can we make them scheduled"
"But what if we, I just want to see you"
"That's okay as well" McGonagall smiled,
"Robin needs to call you Professor, at least in the classroom" Rowanne said, that one was obvious
"Definitely, and in corridors or the great hall"
"Most times there are other students about" Rowanne settled,
"Hmmm, depends on the situation"
"Robin's not good at judging situations"
"Don't I know it" McGonagall chuckled,
"What about Saturdays, we can still do that right?"
"I don't know munchkin, students don't normally leave the grounds"
"But other students get to sent their parent's letters, we don't get you send you anything" Rowanne reasoned,
"That's a good point, okay how about this. Instead of Saturdays that are just you and me or me and Robin, we'll have tea after school, once a month." Rowanne beamed,
"And then one Saturday a month we'll have dinner with just the three of us. Apart from that, you talk to your head of house with any problems you have"
"But what if we wanna talk to you"
"You can send me an owl, or give me a note in person maybe, we'll work that out"
"Okay" Rowanne nodded, the rules were fair, even if she didn't like all of them.
They sat in scilence for a moment, before McGonagall spoke, "Now I have detention with a certain michevious madam"
Rowanne chuckled, "What are you going to make her do?"
"How tidy is your room?" McGonagall rose, pushing their door open to reveal the mess within,
"Okay that's all Robin"
"I'm sure it was. But I don't want to come home and know the state of your room. Besides, who knows when you'll be back in there"
"What was that we were talking about mother/teacher boundaries?" Rowanne smirked, feeling much lighter.
Rowanne left, making her way back to the common room. Just as she left, Robin appeared at the door.
“God it's like Piccadilly Circus in here” She sighed as the second twin walked in,
“I'm here for detention” Robin folded her arms,
“You want to go outside, drop the attitude and try again?” She asked, raising one eyebrow.
Robin sighed but complied, leaving the room and knocking on the door,
“Come in” McGonagall smiled, quickly hiding it before Robin could see, “ah Miss McGonagall, here for your detention?”
“Yeah” she rolled her eyes,
“Robin do we have to try that for a third time”
“No” she huffed,
“Good, now we are going to do this one in our quarters”
“What do you mean?”
“Come on”
“Mum I thought you said this was a detention not a lecture” she rolled her eyes,
“It is exactly what I deem it to be based on your behavior, which we both know hasn't been acceptable recently”
“I don't want to listen to you drone on-”
“I don't care what you do and don't want, young lady. You will follow me”
“But mum-”
“It's professor and you will learn to listen to instructions Robin” Minerva snapped,
“I thought you said questioning authority was a good thing!”
“For your sister it is! Maybe she wouldn't blindly follow you!”
“Just tell me what you want me to do!” Robin stamped her foot,
“You can tidy your ruddy room”
“Rowanne left that mess, not me!” she said indignantly
“I highly doubt that”
“I'd rather be the toad” Robin said under her breath,
“What was that?”
“Nothing” she walked across into her room, slamming the door behind her.
The room was exactly how she'd left it. Old clothes strewn near the wash basket and wrappers from sweets littered over her desk. It took her almost an hour to clean it, though the constant intrusions from her mother and distractions around the room didn't help matters. When she was finally done Robin exited the room to find her mother sat by the fire reading a book.
Robin felt like she was five again, made to tidy her room after a failed attempt at making slime. That was certainly not an easy task. Minerva looked up when Robin walked in, she smiled at the girl, “finished?”
“Yeah”
“Well done. Do I need to go check?”
“Up to you”
“It's okay, I trust you. Now come over here, the fire's warm” McGonagall pulled her daughter towards her, placing her arm around her shoulders. “Ice cream?”
“Always” Robin smiled.
McGonagall pulled herself away from the comfort of the fire, walking over to the freezer. She came back quickly with the bowl, holding it just out of reach,
“So do you want to tell me why you had to clean your room?”
“Because I throwed a prank in front of the school” all the fight had left the girl, she was tired and Minerva was right, the fire was warm.
“Threw princess” McGonagall handed the bowl to her
“Sorry” they descended into an uncomfortable silence as Robin ate, before Minerva spoke,
“I was talking to your sister, and we've come up with some rules and boundaries that as a family we should follow”
“my sister!” Robin looked up, slightly outraged, though she didn't know why
“Yes she came to see me, I don't think she had a very good first few days”
“She was having problems with Lily. But I put that right”
“what do you mean” McGonagall raised an eyebrow, this isn't going to be good
“I spoke to Lily, she'll be treating Ro much better in the future”
“And you think Rowanne would want that”
“Who cares. If Lily is going to be friends with Ro then she's going to have to be deserving. Or she'll have me to deal with” McGonagall beamed with pride, maybe her daughter wasn't as blind to those around her, and she clearly cared for Rowanne.
“No one wants that” She reached over to a tartan tin on the coffee table, offering one to Robin, “Okay, here's the deal. I gave you three detentions, yes?”
“Yeah”
“Well as a one off, I'm removing the final one. You can count this as your final detention from your mother”
“what!?” Robin looked at her, completely bewildered. Since when did McGonagall take away detentions.
“However, as your professor and head of house, I expect to see you in my office, 8pm on the dot, for your detention.”
“Hang on I'm really confused”
“I want to apologize to you, Robin. I haven't been clear with you about how things are going to work from now on. But that's going to change. We will have clear boundaries in place in order to prevent me from punishing you worse because you're my daughter. I think I was too afraid of people thinking I was going lenient”
“Mum, someone only has to meet you. Or know how you treat the Gryfindors to know that you'll never be lenient on us”
“thank you princess. So the rules are, first and foremost, you calling me professor. In the classroom, corridor, great hall, basically anytime it's not a family thing, or your not asking me as your mother”
"Okay. I guess I can do that"
"And your sister asked about Saturdays and we came to the agreement we'd catch up once a month for tea each and have a family meal together"
Robin looked to the floor, clearly contemplating her options, McGonagall studied her for a moment. "Look, if you don't want to talk once a month we don't have to. But I would like you to come to dinner, even if it's just for Rowanne's sake"
Robin still stayed silent, pondering what to do. Every Saturday they would do out as a family, once a month to see McGonagall's parents and brothers, once just as a trio and then each child would have a day out specifically with their mother. Though recently Robin hadn't been as interested, her and Minerva would often just go for the afternoon or evening sometimes not at all.
"Okay how about this" McGonagall had approached the situation with her eldest daughter very carefully. She knew she shouldn't push Robin, as much as it broke her heart to feel her daughter slipping slowly away, but she also knew better than to close the door entirely. It had to be up to Robin, and McGonagall had to make her feel comfortable enough to come back. "I will be in my room on the last day of every month from 5pm, unless I reschedule with you. If you want to then there will be a pot of tea ready for us, but if you have too much homework, or are doing things with friends then there's no pressure to come. If you still want to come then send me an owl and with an alternative night"
Robin smiled and nodded, "yeah, I can do that"
"Excellent" McGonagall smiled mischievously, "Though I'm sure either way I'll be seeing a lot of you in detention"
Robin smirked, "I would never!"
Rowanne marched into the common room. She had a giant book in her hands. It had taken her a while to convince Madam Pince to let her take the book as the woman knew what Rowanne had put herself through the last time she used the book. But Rowanne assured her that she was just using it to prove a point, and that she wasn’t actually going to attempt the spell again.
She walked over to where Lily, Marlinne and Mary were working on the transfiguration essay McGonagall had set them. Mary and Marlinne looked between them, nervous. “Can we talk?” Rowanne asked.
“Yeah” Lily said, “Can you two give us a minute?” The other two girls nodded and left reluctantly,
Rowanne sat down and dumped the book in the middle of the table, “Look I’m sorry I said you wouldn’t understand it. But the thing is it's not standard stuff that anyone will know. I should have explained that, I am sorry for the way it came across, it wasn't my intention"
"Thanks. I appreciate it. I guess I've been kinda mean since then, and for that I'm sorry”
“Yeah that hurt” Rowanne admitted, more to herself than anyone else, “But if I’m honest I kind of didn’t know why. I honestly had no idea why you were doing it until mum explained it to me"
"Can we put this behind us?"
"Yeah, I'd like that"
"Brilliant because we're completely lost with this transfiguration essay"
Rowanne laughed, pulling the essay towards her as Lilly beckoned Mary and Marlinne over.
“So how are things with your sister?” Rowanne asked,
“I haven't spoken to her. Sev says I should just leave it, that she's not worth it” Lilly sighed, she clearly didn't believe that and certainly didn't want to accept it.
“She'll come around, I wouldn't worry” Rowanne reassured her before turning to the two other girls who she’d barely spoken to.
“You have a brother right? Wasn't there multiple?” Rowanne knew she recognised the name McKinnon, but she couldn't remember where from, Marlene’s brothers had been to school there
“Four” Marlene smiled,
“Four!” Lily and Rowanne exclaimed,
“I'd genuinely hate to have to live with boys”
“They're great. They can be annoying but they're alright”
“Are they wizards?”
“Yeah, my brother's the quidditch Captin, he finishes this year. My oldest brother works in the ministry, he moved out a few years ago, and the other just left school, he’s working at a shop in Diagon Alley, saving up to go travelling”
“Nice”
“What about you Mary?” She turned to the other girl,
“Well I didn’t know any of this existed last year”
They laughed, “I’m muggle born as well” Lily said proudly, “Though I met a boy named Severus when I was 9. He told me all about this”
“I’m the only witch in my family. It was a bit of a shock”
“I’ll bet” Marlene smiled,
“What about you. Your a twin” Mary asked
“Yeah well, not exactly interesting”
“Robin seems…”
“Like a complete nightmare?” Rowanne smiled, she’d relaxed into the other girls, dropping a bit of her edge,
“Something like that”
“She can be. She's great, but she can be a nightmare”
At that moment the portrait opened to reveal Robin. She looked tired but happy and much calmer than dhe was before. Her eyes searched the room, looking for something.
"Where are the boys?" She asked, approaching the girls,
"I think they're talking in their dorm," Marlene said, barely looking up from her parchment where she was finishing the essay. Well copying the essay.
“Oh” it was clear Robin was disappointed. She made a beeline for the rooms.
“Hey Robin, why don't you sit down” Lily smiled, it seemed only fair to make an effort. Maybe Robin wouldn't be as bad as she seemed,
“Really? I thought you guys didn't like me” she was clearly surprised,
Mary shrugged, “Do you want to sit down or not?”
Robin smiled, flopping down onto the sofa next to Rowanne,
“Hey Row” the group of girls looked up to watch the twins.
“Yeah” Rowanne was the only one that kept her head down, still looking through her essay,
“Mum told me what you said about me” Rowanne's head whipped up, staring intently at her sister,
“What do you mean?”
“About the way I’ve been acting” Robin didn't seem angry, not like Rowanne was expecting she might be. In fact she looked an awful lot like their mother.
“Oh. She shouldn't have said it”
“I just wanted to say I’m sorry” Rowanne smiled,
“Thanks rob”
“We good?”
“Always” Rowanne smiled as her sister tackled her into the sofa, arms wrapped tightly around her.
“So McGonagall's your mother” Mary asked, breaking up the girls
“Yeah…” Robin looked at her suspiciously,
“Got any embarrassing stories”
“Oh mum keeps them under lock and key” Rowanne chuckled
“Wed be expelled if we told you”
“And mum would move schools’
“So so would we”
“But we'd still be homeschooled”
“And probably never be allowed out of the house” Robin continued dramatically
“Like ever”
“But there is one”
“Robin!”
“What?”
“Mum would kill us!”
“Aren't you mad at her for telling me about your talk” Robin raised her eyebrows
Rowanne thought for a moment, “So it was her third year, a Slytherin vs Gryffindor match…”
