You need some love
After arriving at Grimmauld place Lily and James ran inside to find Sirius, Remus, Peter, Mary, Marlene, and Dorcas sitting at the dining table quietly talking. They looked up when the two arrived and Sirius motioned for them to sit down.
“Ok, what’s going on?” Lily demanded as she sat down with Harry in her arms next to Mary.
Sirius waited for them to both be sitting before he explained, “Regulus has gone missing. Nobody can find him at Hogwarts and he’s not here either so I have no idea where to find him. His friends are looking for him at Hogwarts but we’ll be helping the officers look for him out here. Agreed?”
He looked around at everyone as they nodded in agreement before he sunk into his chair with a sigh. “We need to find him; Merlin knows where he is.” Sirius exclaimed as Remus put a hand on his back.
“Do we even know if he’s in England anymore?” Marlene asked looking around at everyone. “Let’s just hope he is,” Peter answered, “but we should keep that as an option if we can’t find him.” Everyone nodded as James looked on in confusion. Dorcas noticed his confusion and asked, “What’s up with you Potter?” James looked up at her as everyone turned their eyes on him. “Nothing,” James answered, I’m just trying to figure out why he would run away.”
That got everyone thinking, why would he run away he had no reason to. Walburga Black has moved to France to retire after her husband died and Regulus gave Sirius the house but he's still letting Regulus stay here for as long as he needs. So why?
Why would he do it? James wondered did we do something wrong? Did we upset him?... Then he realized.
“Wait guys,” James interrupted their questioning, “did we... did we ever tell Regulus that we forgave him for getting the dark mark?” That made everyone stop because they didn’t tell him, in fact, they hadn’t spoken to him after he told them about it. “Wait so what you’re saying is he might have left because he thought we.. what? Hated him?” Lily asked. James nodded slowly, a saddened expression on his face. “Shit,” Sirius muttered, realization dawning on his features.

After the meeting, James and Lily apparated home. While Lily was putting Harry to bed James sat down on the couch and thought. He thought about all the times that he could have told him, could have asked, and all the times he didn’t. Merlin Regulus I’m so sorry. Please just come back, we need you. I need you.
James felt something falling off of his face. He went to wipe it away and he realized he was crying. Huh, that’s funny James thought if Regulus were here, he’d tell me I was being stupid and… and- James broke down.
