The tears in my eyes

The next morning James went to his mum's house.

Walking in the smell of freshly baked cookies wafted through the warm house and James was glad he came.

“Hi sweetie,” his mum called from the kitchen, “Just give me a second, I’m getting the cookies out.”

“Ok, mum,” James called as he took off his shoes.

Looking around James saw that everything was still in the same place he last saw it in. The magical warmth and natural light created a sense of calm that James hadn’t felt for a long time.

Walking into the kitchen, James saw his mother pulling out the cookies from the oven. She turned to face him after she had put them on the bench.

“So, what did you need to talk about?” She asked, pulling off the oven mitts.

James spluttered, “Why would you think that? I just came to see how you were.”

Euphemia eyed him skeptically. “Yeah, sure you are,” She said sarcastically, “don’t lie to me Jamie, I know what you’re here for.”

James sighed, “Fine, Regulus has gone missing.”

Euphemia gasped, “Really? Do you mean Sirius’s younger brother? He was really nice.”

“Yeah,” James sighed, “I just don’t know why he would leave. I just want him back.”

Euphemia looked at him knowingly, “Well if he wants to come back, you'll find him. Don’t rush it though, think it through.”

“Yeah… Thanks, Mum.” James muttered I just want him back now though

“It’s alright Jamie, you’ll find him. I know it.” Euphemia gave James a hug before he walked back to the front door.

“Oh, and James,” Euphemia called out, “When you find him, bring him over for dinner.”

“Ok mum,” James replied as he walked out the door.

James stepped onto the driveway of his house. He was about to open the door when he heard a soft meow come from behind a tree.

He walked over to it and peeked around the trunk.

A small black cat was huddled next to the tree. It looked like it had been in a fight of some kind.

“Oh darling,” James exclaimed, “You do not look good.”

He went to pick the cat up but it shied away from his touch. James held his hands up as a symbol of peace. The cat looked up and it slowly shuffled towards James.

Taking his opportunity James picked up the cat and checked it over. There was blood and dirt caked into its fur, and it looked like there were many scars underneath the blood.

“Oh, this isn’t good,” James said as he started walking towards his house again, “Let's get you inside.”
