Prologue
Boy was bad. He was always bad. That is what his uncle and aunt always told him. Boy was ungrateful, lazy, stupid. Boy must do all the chores. Boy only can have their cousin's hand-me-downs. Boy shouldn’t speak unless spoken to. Boy, don’t eat until the others are finished.
This is how it has been for all 6 years of his life. Boy, didn’t even get to go to school like his cousin. Boy had to be locked in the cupboard under the stairs unless he was needed.
Today Boy got to stay with the old lady next door. Boy, didn’t mind that she had a lot of cats. She was the one who took Boy to the hospital last week when Boy was bad and Uncle had to punish him. Uncle yelled at the old woman because of the bright red cast he wore. Boy, wasn’t that hurt, he said. That he wasn’t worth the trouble. Boy knew that already, but his arm really hurted.
Boy sat on the floor at the old lady’s house. Boy, don’t get to sit on furniture. Boy jumped when there was a loud pounding on the door. Boy wanted to cry. He hoped it wasn’t his uncle coming back for him so soon.
There was a deep voice of a man he didn't know. He talked to the old lady. Boy made himself as small as he could. Boy thought he felt the floor move with each heavy step.
“ ‘Arry?” Boy, didn’t move. Maybe the giant's name is ‘Arry. Boy flinched and rushed back when he felt a gigantic hand move toward him.
“ ‘Arry it’s okay. No one will ever hurt ya again. Ya gotta come with me.” Was Boy ‘Arry? Boy looked up at the giant. He had long brown hair with a matching beard. Giant wore a leather jacket and black denim. The giant held out his rough hand. Boy placed his small hand in his. The giant smiled at Boy.
“Let’s go ‘Arry” The giant picked him up and took him out of the old lady’s house. “When ya get older ‘Arry we will ride around on my bike, but right now ya too lil’.” The giant sat him in the back seat and buckled him up.
They drove for a really really, really long time. The giant fed him a burger and chips. Boy never had a happy meal before, but his cousin always had it. Boy cried when he couldn’t finish the meal, but the giant told boy he could have another happy meal again.
Boy must have fallen asleep because he woke up when the giant carried him into a tall house. When they walked through the door. He felt a hand on his back. He flinched and turned to look at who touched him. That is when he saw the old man. He had a long white beard and hair. The man’s blue eyes sparkled. Boy, didn’t like that, so he hid his face in the giant's shoulder. Maybe he could stay with the giant. Boy closed his eyes again and fell asleep.
