James
The day James mentioned it for the first time was a rainy Tuesday in early spring. The Marauders were sitting in the Gryffindor common room together and warmed their hands at the fireplace. It was much colder than it usually was that time of the year and most of the students had been late for classes in the morning because they had to look for their jumpers, which were already put away.
"Hey, Pete?", James asked pensively, "Have you and Lucinda already kissed?"
Peter turned red immediately and nodded shyly.
"When?"
He looked at James with watery eyes and replied so quietly that they could barely hear him, "Two weeks ago..."
"TWO WEEKS?!", James yelled very shocked, "And you never thought about telling us?"
"W-well...", he stuttered but Sirius interrupted him, "He told just me because... you know... I have a bit more experience than you. He wanted me to give him some tips."
James seemed deeply offended, which was a very rarely present occurrence. It was not a secret that he was disappointed about Sirius having his first kiss before James but usually he was a person to just smile and not express his disagreement.
Remus watched the conversation silently and his gaze jumped from James to Sirius as if he was following a ping pong game.
"I'll go upstairs.", James mumbled and stood up. Without any other words he left.
"I'll check on him.", Remus sighed. Usually it was James' job to settle disputes but obviously that would be Remus' responsibility now because Sirius was much too stubborn to calm James down. Peter seemed a bit confused, which was completely understandable noting that James has never really been upset before since they had got to Hogwarts.
"Hey", Remus greeted James, who was sitting on his bed, arms crossed.
"Moony?", he frowned, "We have to catch up."
"Catch up?", Remus asked carefully because this inflection didn't bode well.
"Tomorrow evening we'll both have kissed a girl. Even Peter had his first kiss before us, that's pathetic. Don't tell him though."
"How the fuck d'you wanna do that until tomorrow?"
James grinned his typical James-Potter-grin, which you could mostly see when he was planning a prank or on how to ask out Lily.
"Well, we'll have to make an effort.", he said smiling.
The next evening when everyone was lying in their beds Remus snuk into James bed. Of course both hadn't managed to do the given task in twenty-four hours.
"What are we going to do now?", James despaired, which made Remus laugh.
"It's not as if our lives would depend on it."
"I got it!", he suddenly yelled. Luckily they had put up a silencing charm before so nobody could here them.
"Do I wanna know it?", Remus asked sceptically. There was something in his voice the werewolf didn't like. And then there was this smile someone could wear conquering the world. His eyes shone brightly because of his zest for action.
"Why don't we just kiss? Then we both had our first kiss and nobody has to know who we actually kissed. It's bloody brilliant!"
Remus was a bit surprised but at the same time he thought he should have expected something stupid like that.
Could two boys even kiss? Probably.
"But we are both boys. Does that even count?", Remus asked a bit confused.
"Nobody will know. It doesn't matter if we kiss girls or boys, what matters is that we aren't the only ones that haven't been kissed anymore."
After thinking about it for a minute Remus agreed. What was the worst that could happen? When James said that two boys could kiss it had to be true. It was just practise, just something you do so that you can say you have been kissed. It didn't matter whether it counted or not. It wasn't as if anyone could check.
James locked their eyes for a moment before slowly leaning in, which made Remus yelp.
"You mean, right now?", he asked. He hadn't expected it to start that fast at all. His opposite shrugged.
"When would we do it instead? It will never be the perfect time."
"'kay then. Let's get over with it, I guess."
They looked at each other for a few moments because after that interruption nobody dared to do the first step. How do you even kiss at all? James seemed to know because his face came closer again.
Their lips had barely touched when they pulled back again. Remus stared in James' eyes questioning. The boy nodded barely noticeable and they kissed again, deeper this time.
It was completely different to what Remus had expected. He had thought it wouldn't be special, even disgusting maybe, nothing that matters very much. Just lips brushing. But that was not what it was like. His mouth tingled and he had a weird feeling in his stomach. Those lips moving against his felt so right like there was no other way for it to happen. It was very good but it wasn't as if Remus would ever admit that.
As suddenly as it had begun it was over again. James grinned.
"Now we just have to make sure that the others don't find out but still believe us that we both kissed somebody."
He winked and Remus stomach did something weird.
But that turned out more difficult than they had expected. Peter trusted them immediately but Sirius stayed sceptical. He seemed not to be able to imagine Remus with some girl. Though, after a few weeks he apparently accepted that trying to get James and Remus to tell him was hopeless and he stopped asking.
After that James and Remus didn't mention it again for a very long time. But Remus thought about it much. Late at night when he was tired and not able to fully control his mind he often felt the wish to just go and kiss James again.
Why did he feel like this was an essential part of his life he didn't want to leave out on? He wasn't supposed to feel like that. James was a boy after all. He forced himself to forget about it.
