Competition Continues ****Revised 4/11/25****
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
June 2004
Hadrian thought his family was going to get away without having any type of run-in with Dumbledore. He had been wrong. But he didn't think it went as bad as it could have gone.
Hadrian and Severus had gotten up super early so that they could head down for the competitors' meeting taking place before breakfast. They had sat through the meeting which basically went over all of the information in the rules and information packets. Hadrian had read it all yesterday.
When they were dismissed Hadrian and Severus remained seated to allow the crowd to thin out before getting up to leave. That had apparently been the wrong choice. Because only a few minutes later they were approached by a very old man with really long grey hair and a really long grey beard. He was wearing outrageous robes of yellow and Hadrian had to work hard not to laugh when the man walked over smiling with a false twinkle in his eye.
"Severus, my dear boy, it is good to see you. You disappeared so suddenly all those years ago, I was afraid something had happened to you,” Dumbledore said cheerily. Then he turned those sharp, twinkling eyes to Hadrian. "And who is this nice-looking young man?"
"This is my son, Orion," Was all that Severus said. Hadrian smiled up at the old bastard.
"Nice to meet you, Sir," Hadrian said politely. No reason to be openly hostile. The man continued to look at him hard.
"Who is his mother? Did she go to Hogwarts as well?" Dumbledore asked.
"My husband is his bearer. And yes he went to school here as well. You remember Regulus Black?" Severus asked and Hadrian saw the amusement in his father's eyes when the headmaster looked shocked.
"Regulus Black? But I thought..." Then he cut himself off.
"You thought what, Albus? That he was dead?" Severus nearly spat at the man. Hadrian didn't get to see his father angry very often. "Well, he isn't. We found out that Regulus was pregnant with our boy here and decided that England was too dangerous of a place to raise a child. So, we left."
"So, the boy was born after you left England?" Dumbledore asked but it didn't seem to Hadrian like he believed them. He had this look of almost triumph in his eyes.
"Yes, now if you will excuse us, Albus we need to get back to our room and collect Regulus for breakfast so that we can move on for the next competition," Severus stated and placed an arm across Hadrian's shoulders.
"Nice to meet you, Sir," Hadrian said.
"It was really, very nice to meet you as well, my boy," Dumbledore said never turning from Hadrian. He could feel him watching them all the way out of the Great Hall.
"Papa, that man makes me nervous. I think we should skip breakfast and leave. I don't think he believes us," Hadrian insisted.
"I believe that is a good idea," Severus agreed. Hadrian and Severus made it to the common room to find the others, including Draco and Lucius, waiting for them.
"What is a good idea?" Draco asked. "I hope whatever it is includes breakfast. I am starving. Also, what took you guys so long to get back? I thought you were right behind us.”
"We are leaving, right now. We aren't going to breakfast we are heading straight to Russia," Severus stated.
"What happened?" Remus asked. stepping closer to his daughters and Sirius.
"Dumbledore found us in the Great Hall after the meeting. He asked a lot of questions, and I don't think he believed our answers, so we need to go," Hadrian spoke up.
"What are you hiding that you don't want him to know so badly, Regulus?" Lucius asked suspiciously. He was looking between Regulus, Severus, and Hadrian.
"We aren't going to tell you either. It isn't something that anyone outside of the five us will ever know if we can help it. It is safer that way," Regulus told Lucius and Draco.
"All we are going to tell you is that it isn't safe here for us and we were taking a risk coming to this school, Albus Dumbledore is a threat to our family, and we won't give him the opportunity to hurt us like he has done before. So, we are packing and heading to Russia," Severus added. Lucius nodded.
"Well, we hate this place anyways. I have never trusted that old goat it is the reason that I pulled Draco out of this school. So how about we all head out together and get breakfast in Russia," Lucius stated. He knew something was going on, they weren't hiding it, and Lucius was hoping to find out what it was. He prided himself on his knowledge.
"Then let's get our things packed and get out of here as quick as we can," Sirius stated. Regulus called Kreacher who packed their things for them quickly. Lucius called a house elf that packed their things for them as well.
It only took maybe ten minutes to get everything together and shrunk into their pockets. Their portkey wouldn't work inside the wards so Kreacher was going to take them to just outside of the ward-line and then they would use the portkey to go to Russia. They wouldn't give Dumbledore the chance to interfere.
They made it out and Hadrian grinned as he saw Dumbledore, McGonagall, and the Weasley parents standing in the lawn of castle and watching them portkey away. Dumbledore looked pissed and the others just looked curious. Hadrian was just happy to be out of England.
He looked around when they landed. It was a really nice place. It was a beautiful room and when Hadrian looked out the windows all he saw was water. He had looked up each of the magical schools when he found out they would be visiting each of them. Koldovstoretz was built in the middle of Lake Ladoga. Only a small portion of the school was above water the rest of it was under.
"This is amazing," Draco stated and Hadrian just nodded in agreement. Hadrian, Draco, Cassy, and Cori were all looking out the windows at the creatures swimming by.
"Dobroye Utro, Welcome to Koldovstoretz, I am Katarina," said a very pretty Russian woman standing in the doorway. Her words were heavily accented. "You are the first competitors here. We were not expecting anyone to arrive for a few days honestly. Follow me, we will get you registered and placed in rooms. The officials arrived about an hour ago."
"Yes, well most of us here were born in England and had no desire to linger. We just wanted to get a head start on registering so that we could enjoy the local sites and relax," Remus spoke up as they followed the woman up a few flights of stairs.
"Well, we did have a few things written up for the people who wanted to visit and sightsee. I can give it to you, there are boats available at all times for crossing the lake. But you can use the room you just came in through as well. It is the only place in the school that you can come or go from with a portkey or apparition," Katarina stated.
"Thank you for the information. That is much appreciated. We definitely would like that," Regulus answered her. They followed her to a very nice room where a man was waiting for them at a table with paperwork.
"Hello, let's get you all signed up. Who from your group is competing?" Hadrian and Draco stepped forward.
"Draco Malfoy," Draco stated and was handed his paper to sign and received his pass and Lucius was given his family pass.
"Orion Black-Prince," Hadrian stated when it was his turn. "If at all possible we would all like to be in the same area."
"In this competition, it is first come, first serve for the best rooms. Since you are the first group here you get the best. There is a set of rooms at the top of the east tower that I think would be perfect if all of you want to room together. It is a family suite for the professors. There are five rooms connected to a single common room and a small kitchen and dining area. Would that work for you?" The official asked. Hadrian and Draco exchanged looks and then looked to their parents.
Sirius looked like he was going to say something but Remus elbowed him and shook his head. They other adults all just nodded.
"Yes, we would like to do that, please," Hadrian told the official. They were all checked in and Katarina led them away to another set of stairs that took them up a few flights.
"You can add your own wards to the door so that no one can pass through except those in your group. We value privacy and safety here and know that sometimes in competitions people can do things to sabotage each other. If you have need of anything, just call for an elf they will be happy to help you. There is a map of the school included in your welcome packet. Have a great day," Katarina told them and then left them to settle in. It was amazing.
"This is great. Draco and I are going to share, and we are getting first dibs," Hadrian said grinning like a lunatic.
Draco gave a small shriek as Hadrian grabbed his hand and pulled him away. Hadrian peaked into each room and dismissed them until he came to one that had double full-sized beds.
"Claimed," Hadrian called out and then pulled Draco into the room. Toga and Kimi followed them into the room. Draco huffed when Hadrian finally let him go.
"You didn't have to yank me around like a commoner," Draco said straightening up his robes. Hadrian grinned at him.
"I'm sorry, did you want to room with your dad? Because I sure didn't," Hadrian said with a smirk when Draco grumbled at him. "Good. We are going to be here for a week and a half so let's unpack and get comfortable. Kreacher will make us breakfast."
Kreacher did in fact make them all a large breakfast. Hadrian learned that Cassy and Cori were sharing a room, Lucius had a room to himself, and of course, his uncles had a room, and his dads had a room.
They enjoyed their breakfast and then decided they were going to head out and start their vacation in Russia with The Golden Ring. It is a well-known tourist route that passes through many medieval Russian cities.
They stopped at all of the medieval places and got a really good view of traditional Russia. They bought souvenirs and sampled lots of different foods, they had a great time and returned after dinner to their rooms to relax.
The next day Hadrian and Severus were up before breakfast and headed down to the room that had been set up for duelists to practice. They practiced for an hour or two on the spells that Hadrian still wanted to learn.
After breakfast, Lucius and Draco headed down for the same thing. They did not want them practicing together, just in case they ended up going against each other. Once Draco and Lucius came back they made plans to spend the day out at the Limpopo Zoo. There was a muggle section and a magical section. They were going to visit both.
This was how they spent the week and a half in Moscow. They would have breakfast, practice, visit the tourist places around Russia (both muggle and magical), and then relax. After a few days, other contestants started to arrive.
"Hey Bill," Hadrian called as he was walking back from the practice room. Then he saw the twins. They were wearing home-knit sweaters with a giant F and a G on them. They were smirking at Hadrian. "Hello Fred," Hadrian said to the sharper twin with the G on his sweater. "Hi George," Hadrian said to the smiling twin with the F on.
"How do you know them apart already?" Bill asked with a chuckle. "Our own mother and siblings get them mixed up all the time." Hadrian shrugged.
"My Papa taught me to be observant. I don't exactly have an eidetic memory but it's pretty close. Their differences are very subtle, but they are there," Hadrian told Bill. "How does your own mother get you mixed up?" Hadrian was shocked.
"We are identical," They said together with a shrug.
"My cousins are identical, and we have never mixed them up. They have tried to trip us up a few times, but it never works. They have succeeded in tricking their teachers and friends but not the family. But you don't get them mixed up?" Hadrian asked Bill.
"No, they have never been able to convince me. They get Charlie sometimes but not often, our dad also. Everyone else never gets them right," Bill told Hadrian. Hadrian rolled his eyes that didn't seem like a very close family.
"That seems weird to me," Hadrian said without thinking. Severus gently popped him in the back of the head. Hadrian looked at his father and frowned. "What? It is weird." Hadrian said and then turned around and shrugged at the three Weasleys. "Sorry. Sometimes I forget that not every family is as close as ours. I have been reminded many times that I should remember that."
"It's ok, Orion," Fred stated.
"We have asked ourselves," George added.
"The same thing." They said together. Hadrian smiled at them. At least they weren't upset with him.
"Is the rest of your family with you?" Hadrian asked. He remembered the Weasley parents standing with Dumbledore when they left. He just wanted to know if he should be careful or not.
"No, just the three of us from now on," Bill said.
"Oh, well maybe we can have dinner together or something. We still have tomorrow free before the duels start," Hadrian offered.
"Yeah, that would be nice," Bill told them. "I am going to practice for a bit so we will see you later yeah?" Hadrian nodded and then he and Severus headed back up to their rooms.
After talking to his parents and the others they decided to go ahead and invite the Weasleys to dinner tonight. Hadrian had Kreacher take them the invitation and directions to their room.
Bill, Fred, and George showed up ten minutes before they were told to, and they all had a nice dinner. Hadrian kept kicking Draco when he was rude and apparently his dad was doing the same thing with Lucius. It was hilarious to see Lucius start to snark about something only for him to jump, grumble, and glare at Regulus each time.
It was nice and the next day was just spent relaxing and exploring around the school. None of them wanted to spend too much time running around exhausting themselves. There was a meeting for the competitors that evening before dinner to let them know how the next day would go and where they would be meeting up for the duels. There was a large field on the right side shore of the lake where the Russians played a version of Quidditch. The duels would be split up by three again.
July 2004
Hadrian was the first duel in the second ring.
He took a deep breath, blocked everything out and watched his opponent. It was a woman in her late twenties. Hadrian watched her and waited for her to give herself away. He watched her sweat and then grip her wand and throw a spell that fizzed out before it got to him.
Hadrian wanted to make the duel last a little longer so that he could earn more points, so he returned with a simple disarming and blinked in surprise when the woman's wand landed in his hand, and she panicked and stepped back out of the ring. Hadrian had won in less than five minutes with no effort.
He handed the woman back her wand and turned stunned eyes to the judges.
"One hundred and five points are awarded to Mr. Black-Prince. Zero to Ms. Lannister," The judges stated, and Hadrian moved over to where Draco and Bill had been watching him.
"Well, that was easy," Draco stated and Bill snorted at the look on Hadrian's face.
"I do not like duels like that. I enjoy a challenge. That was disappointing, hopefully the next duel will be more like my first," Hadrian said plus it was bad for earning points when they went down so easy. He was going to end up behind Draco and Bill in points.
"It is still a win though," Bill offered and Hadrian shrugged.
They kept walking around and watching. Draco was the thirty-fourth duel in the first dueling ring. He won and earned one hundred and fifty-nine points. When it was finally Bill's turn to duel Hadrian and Draco watched as he decimated his opponent.
Bill was amazing and he had years more training than either Hadrian or Draco and it showed in his movements and quick action. When they announced his one hundred and eighty-five points, Hadrian thought they were very well deserved.
When the duels were finally all over the duelists all gathered in the middle of the field to wait and find out what their total points were and what the cut-off was. They watched as the scores were totaled.
Hadrian and Draco were neck and neck. Hadrian had two hundred and seventy-two and Draco had two hundred and seventy-one. Bill did better than both of them with a score of three hundred and twenty-eight. Everyone who scored under two hundred and fifty points was eliminated.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hadrian and his family did wait for breakfast this time and then they said their goodbyes to the Weasleys and ported to Bulgaria where the next competition would take place. They planned to do the same thing there. They spent a week and a half seeing the sites around Bulgaria and then competed. Hadrian got his challenge this time and scored one hundred and seventy-three points. Draco scored one hundred and sixty-one. Bill scored one hundred and sixty-eight.
Then they moved on to Uagadou in Africa to do it all over again.
This duel was a hard one for Hadrian and he was a bit upset. He had fought long and hard with his opponent. Hadrian found out later that he had been in many dueling competitions. Hadrian lost his duel, but the judges were impressed with him.
He scored fifty points even though he was the loser, but he also earned seventy points for skill and showmanship. So, he ended up with one hundred and twenty points. His opponent had almost two hundred it had been epic and even though the loss was hard he had loved the fight.
Draco won his duel and earned one hundred and fifty-seven points. Bill won his as well with a score of one hundred and forty-four. Their final scores were Hadrian with five hundred and sixty-five, Draco with five hundred and eighty-nine, and Bill with six hundred and forty. They watched the points get tallied and then it was announced that five hundred and fifty was the cut-off point for this last round of duels.
The next stop was Ilvermorny. While they were waiting for the duels to start this time around Hadrian turned fifteen. He was thrown a small party at a muggle park. He had been curious as to why they had done it in a muggle place until he had gotten the best birthday present.
Charlie had showed up with Bella and Jacob in tow. Hadrian had been beyond excited to be with his two best friends again for the first time in over a year. Draco had attempted to be a bit snobbish before Hadrian had quickly put him in his place about it. He wouldn’t tolerate any sort of hate toward Jacob or Bella.
“This is amazing,” Hadrian said as the three of them swung together on the swings. “We really missed you Bells.”
“I know, I’m sorry Hades. I had to do a lot of groveling with Jake this past month. I am fully prepared to do the same thing with you now,” Bella said with a frown.
“It’s going to take more than a day of it,” Hadrian pointed out. Bella and Jacob both grinned at him. “What am I missing?”
“You get to keep her for the next month,” Jacob informed him. “Dad only agreed to let me come up for the day, but Charlie is going to let Bella stay with you for the rest of the competition.”
“Really?? Hadrian asked excitedly.
“Yeah, it’s only fair. I just spent the last month with Jacob and the others. I would have been devastated to go a whole summer without seeing you again,” Bella answered.
“This is great. I wish you could stay to Jake,” Hadrian said with a sigh.
“I get to see you nearly everyday during the school year. It’s fine. Though I am sad that I don’t get to watch you kick ass in your karate competitions,” Jake responded.
“Don’t worry, I can come home and show you all the moves. I bet I could kick you butt now,” Hadrian pointed out.
“You wish,” Jake answered with a chuckle. “Your new friend is a bit up tight isn’t he?”
“Cousin actually,” Hadrian corrected. “His mom and my dad are cousins. You guys are related down the line somewhere too.”
“That’s hard to believe. Jacob is all dark skin and hair like you and he is so blonde and pale,” Bella said with a laugh.
Draco joined them soon after that and the four of them had fun playing around the park together. Jacob and Charlie had to leave a little after that and the rest of them headed back to Ilvermorny.
Two days before the duel Hadrian's cover was blown with Lucius and Draco. They had been doing so well to only call him Orion. Even Bella had been doing really well. Hadrian had not considered the fact that Ilvermorny might cause them a problem. He only knew two people who went to the entire school.
"Hadrian, Bella!!!" He and Bella turned at the sound of their names being called and so did the others.
Draco and Lucius were slower to turn but eventually did. A bushy-haired girl with a bright smile was running toward them.
"Oh, I just knew it was you. What are you doing here? Oh, Hadrian, are your dad's letting you start school here this year? I bet you are so excited Bella. That would be so cool...." Hermione took a deep breath to keep going and Hadrian reached out and covered her mouth. He was grinning at her and Bella was laughing.
"Deep breath, Mione. Let me answer at least one of your questions. I am here because I am competing in the duels. I am not starting school here. It is good to see you," Hadrian told her. He pulled her into a hug. And then pulled away so that Bella could do the same. He was really hoping that Draco and Lucius had not picked up on the fact that she had called him Hadrian.
“Hey Bells,” Hermione greeted.
“Hey, Mione,” Bella returned.
"Sorry, I was just so excited to see the two of you. I am here helping keep things organized for the competition," Hermione said as they pulled away from each other. Then she looked over Hadrian's shoulder and frowned. "Hadrian, is that Draco Malfoy with you?"
"Yeah, he is my cousin. He is in the competition too. He is actually beating me right now. You must know him from when you both went to Hogwarts," Hadrian said. Hermione nodded.
"He wasn't very nice to me. He is one of those purebloods who believe muggle-born are dirty and unworthy. But maybe he has grown up since then," Hermione stated.
“He was a bit of a snob the first day, but he is getting better. Hadrian keeps hexing him every time he says something hateful. Reg is doing the same thing to his dad,” Bella whispered to Hermione.
“Good,” Hermione said with a chuckle. “Deserves it.”
"Oh, your Weasley twins are here somewhere. Their older brother is in the competition as well. Look for them," Hadrian told her. Hadrian pulled her and Bella over to the side for a second. "Mione, I need you to do me a favor. No one knows my name is Hadrian. I am going by Orion in this competition. You think that you can remember to call me that?"
"That is a bit random but yeah I can try and remember," Hermione told him.
"Thanks, Mione. Well, we will see you around," Hadrian told her. Hermione hugged both him and Bella again.
"See you around, Orion, by Bella," Hermione said and then she waved at the others and walked away. Then the others headed back to their rooms.
"So, Hadrian, huh?" Draco said once they were all comfortable. Hadrian signed and nodded.
"My first name is Hadrian, Orion is my middle name," Hadrian said. Lucius gave Regulus and Severus a look.
“Hadrian is awfully close to Harry,” Lucius pointed out. “And I happen to know because of Narcissa that you were in fact married to James Potter and bore him a child.”
“How in Merlin’s name would she know that?” Sirius demanded to know.
“I told her about the wedding,” Regulus admitted. “Cissy and I were always really close. I don’t know how she knew about me being pregnant though.”
“My wife has always been able to tell when someone was carrying. Even before the person themself knew,” Lucius revealed. Regulus chuckled.
“Yes, I was married to James Potter and bore him a child,” Regulus admitted finally with a sigh.
"That is what you are keeping secret. Merlin, this is completely unexpected. Harry Potter, Dumbledore's Boy Who Lived," Lucius stated with a smirk. Hadrian looked at his dads to see what they were going to do. Regulus took a deep breath and looked at Lucius.
"He was never Dumbledore’s anything. He is mine. Severus and I took him from the muggle home that Dumbledore left him at. We faked his death and ran away to raise him far away from that manipulative old bastard. He has done a lot to hurt my family," Regulus told them.
They ended up spending the evening telling Lucius and Draco everything. They explained the entire story and surprisingly Lucius thanked Severus and Regulus. They were the reason that the world was free of Voldemort. Even if no one but MACUSA knew it.
They spent the next few days just hanging around with Hermione, the twins, and Bill when they could as well as practicing. Hermione and Bella also volunteered to give Cassy and Cori a tour of the school. Remus and Sirius had decided that they wanted the twins to go to Ilvermorny.
They wanted them to be more involved in the magical world than Hadrian was. Their girls didn't really fit into the muggle world like Hadrian did. So, they were going to do things opposite from Hadrian. They would go to magic school and do muggle work on the side. So, when school started in a few weeks the twins would be returning to Ilvermorny.
The day of the duels came, and they were informed that things would change starting this round. They would not duel once. They would duel twice against two separate opponents. The points would be added together and then added to their total.
Hadrian was excited it was really getting interesting now.
The amount of points needed to win would get higher and higher so that they could truly start eliminating people. Hadrian's first duel was a win against a girl from Russia, he scored one hundred and seventy-seven points. His second duel was against a young man from here in America. Hadrian beat him with a score of one hundred and seventy.
He was pretty proud of those scores.
Draco's first duel was against a boy from Brazil. Draco won with a score of one hundred and forty-two. His second duel was against a boy from France that he knew vaguely. Draco brought home his second win with a score of one hundred and sixty.
Bill surprisingly lost his first duel to someone that he had trained with years ago. He still came out with a score of one hundred and forty. His second duel was a victory with a score of one hundred and seventy-eight.
When they were all done, they said their goodbyes and went to their next destination in Brazil. It was the same with two duels. They would be tallied and then there would be an elimination.
Hadrian made a score of one hundred and eighty on his first duel and one hundred and seventy-three on his second duel. Draco scored one hundred and seventy-five on his first duel and one hundred and seventy-one on his second. Bill won both of his duels with a score of one hundred and eighty-one and one hundred and eighty-seven.
So, they ended up with Hadrian having a total score of one thousand two hundred and sixty-five points, Draco with a total score of one thousand two hundred and thirty-seven points, and Bill with a score of one thousand three hundred and twenty-six points. Everyone with a score below one thousand two hundred and thirty was eliminated. Draco was stressed because he had barely passed this time around.
They moved on to the seventh competition.
Mahoutokoro in Japan was beautiful. Hadrian and the others loved spending a week and a half roaming around Japan. They all cut their sightseeing down a lot this time around though so that they could put time and effort into their practice.
This would be their last chance to make it into the finals. there were only eight competitors left at this point. Hadrian, Draco, Bill, Victor Krum from Durmstrang, Lionel who was Bill's old trainer, Hannah from Ireland, Able from Brazil, and Kristina from America. The odds of them having to face each other at this point were getting higher.
When the time finally came for the duels to start they did the matches one and a time.
The first duel was Bill vs Able from Brazil. Bill won but only barely, scoring two hundred and five points. Draco was up next against Lionel who beat him. Draco still managed to score one hundred and twenty points during the duel. The next duel was Viktor vs. Hannah. Viktor was the winner of that duel. The next duel was Hadrian against Kristina. Hadrian beat her and scored one hundred and ninety-seven points.
The second round of duels started with Bill versus Hannah. Bill beat her and earned one hundred and ninety-six points. The second duel was Viktor versus Lionel. Lionel was the winner with both of them scoring still pretty high. The third duel was when it finally happened.
Hadrian and Draco had to duel each other.
It was a long and hard fight but finally Hadrian came out on top. It was a good fight, and Hadrian was proud of it. Neither of them had pulled their punches, so to speak. Hadrian had barely beat him in his opinion. Hadrian ended up with a score of two hundred and fifteen and Draco walked away with a score of one hundred and eighty.
The final duel of the day was Kristina versus Able. Kristina was the winner.
When it was time to calculate the results of the duels, Hadrian had a total score of one thousand six hundred and seventy-seven points, Draco had a score of one thousand five hundred and thirty-seven, and Bill had a score of one thousand seven hundred and twenty-seven.
The cut-off was one thousand six hundred and fifty this time around and that unfortunately knocked Draco out of the competition along with Kristina, Hannah, and Able. So, the final four of the competition was Hadrian, Bill, Viktor, and Lionel.
Hadrian was so proud of himself. This was his first competition ever and he was in the final four. That was an accomplishment all on its own.
After the duel, it was time for Bella, Remus, Sirius, Cassy, and Cori to leave. Harry made Bella promise not to be a stranger this year. To keep up with their letters back and forth. He didn’t want them losing touch again. He had missed her so much this past year and loved getting to spend so much time with her this summer.
They had to get home so that they could get the girls ready to start school. Remus was still teaching at the high school, but they had gotten a sub for the first week. Once the girls were off to school Remus and Sirius would be coming back to watch Hadrian in the finals. Hadrian expected Draco and Lucius to leave as well but surprisingly they stayed.
Draco went to school at Beauxbatons so he would be starting classes and spending time with Hadrian and the others when he was out of class. It worked out well so that he didn't have to miss any school and could still support Hadrian. Hadrian was just glad that he wasn't upset with him.
They left Japan and headed to France where Beauxbatons was waiting. They only had a week this time to prepare and instead of doing any sightseeing, they practiced. Draco and Lucius were harder taskmasters than Severus or Sirius had ever been. Hadrian loved it. He felt improved when it was all said and done.
Finally, the day was here.
The rules were completely different for this round. Names would be randomly drawn. They would do what is called a double elimination. You lose twice and you are knocked out of the competition.
So, names were drawn randomly and ended up with Hadrian versus Viktor and Bill versus Lionel. Hadrian won his duel, and Viktor received his first loss. Bill won his duel, and Lionel received his first loss.
The third round was Viktor versus Lionel. Viktor was defeated and so was eliminated from the competition coming in fourth place. The fourth duel was Hadrian versus Bill. Hadrian took his first loss in the final.
They stopped for a lunch break and then when they came back it was Hadrian versus Lionel. After a spectacular duel that lasted longer than anyone expected it to, Hadrian was the surprising victor.
He was shocked. Lionel had gone the entire competition only losing one time. Hadrian had not expected to win. With that, Lionel took his second loss and was eliminated from the competition taking third place. They were given a break to relax and regroup so that Hadrian could have a moment before the final duel took place.
Hadrian versus Bill.
No matter what happened Hadrian was so proud of himself. He would either be taking first or second place in his first competition. And it was a huge win. He would definitely be signing up for this in a few years when it was set up again.
Then it was time for the final duel to begin. Hadrian and Bill stood facing each other and Hadrian took a deep breath and pulled himself into that state of Hyper-awareness.
He watched Bill closely and Bill watched him just as hard. Everything faded away except for his opponent standing across from him. The minutes ticked down and neither moved. Then suddenly it was like they moved in sync and the battle was on.
There was no gradual build-up of weak spells to powerful. They were flinging auror-level spells back and forth from the first flick of their wrists. Both were casting wordlessly and so the room was filled with nothing but the sound of their breathing and the spells hitting the floor, walls, or barriers as they dueled.
Hadrian was giving as good as he got and both of them were bleeding and bruised.
Finally, Hadrian thought he had seen his opening and fired his shot. He sent two simultaneous spells to try and throw Bill off, but he was surprised when Bill countered them both.
Hadrian was taken off guard when Bill returned the favor by sending multiple spells at once and just when he thought he had countered them all a final spell caught him unaware and he was knocked back out of the ring.
He had lost but it had been one hell of a fight. He just lay there on the ground breathing hard and grinning like a lunatic.
"Bill, I think you broke him. He is grinning like a loon. He has gone mental," Hadrian could hear Draco teasing them both.
"Yep, completely barmy that one," Hadrian heard the twins say together.
Then Bill was leaning over him grinning. He reached a hand down for Hadrian to grasp and pulled him to his feet.
"That was one hell of a fucking match, Mate. I wasn't sure I could actually beat you," Bill told him and clapped him on the shoulder.
"I am not upset about second place. That was a great fight. I am proud to have lost to you," Hadrian told him.
They shook hands and hugged. Then Hadrian was surrounded by his family hugging him and congratulating him. Toga and Kimi were excited and knocked Hadrian to the ground to lick him as well.
The judges called them to order and asked that the four finalists return to the ring so that they could be given their rewards. They were awarded medals, Trophies, and a cash prize for Hadrian and Bill.
They all celebrated that night and then said their goodbyes before parting ways.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
End of August 2004
Hadrian got home and spent the first day sleeping off the competition and relaxing.
They had done all of their school shopping when they had been at Ilvermorny, so they didn't have anything to do to prepare for classes to start. So, Sunday was spent on the reservation with Jake and the other boys.
It was a little tense amongst the tribal elders and a few of the older teens, but Hadrain brushed it off for now. He was sure if it was important enough, Jake would find out and tell him about it.
Hadrian had told them that he was traveling for a martial arts competition and was excited to tell them that he had gotten second place. There was a party at La Push that day and then he went home to sleep so that he would be ready to start his Sophomore year.
He couldn't be too far behind, the first week was usually spent going over things they had learned the year before to make sure that everyone was up to speed for the new year. Hadrian was ready, school was going to be fun.
He was also excited because according to Charlie a new family had moved into Forks over the summer. A young doctor and his wife had moved to town with their five adopted children.
Two would be Sophomores like Hadrian this year and the other three would be juniors. Hadrian couldn't wait to meet them. The last new person at their school had been Mike when they were ten.
So, Hadrian got up the next day and got dressed. He rode to school with Remus like he had been every year since Remus started working at the high school. Remus did like he had last year and dropped Hadrian off in the parking lot so that he could go through the front of the school like everyone else and then he drove around back to the teacher's parking lot. Hadrian was waved over by Mike who was sitting with Ben, Jessica, Angela, Eric, and Tyler.
"Hey, you missed the first week of school we were worried," Tyler said as he made his way over.
Hadrian smiled and looked around trying to spot the new kids. He watched as a really nice brand new looking care pulled into the student parking lot and parked in a place near the entrance. He watched with everyone else while five beautiful pale people stepped out of the car. Hadrian watched them curiously.
They felt different to his magic.
The driver was a lovely blonde girl with pale skin and what seemed like a permanent resting bitch face. Standing next to her was a boy that looked like he could be her brother. He was just a hair taller than she was with blonde hair and pale skin. He looked shiftily around the parking lot like he was in pain or afraid and waiting for someone to strike. A petite dark haired girl that resembled a pixie danced over to him and grabbed his hand. She was only a little taller than Hadrian and was smiling and happily chatting to the others. She also had very pale skin.
Then came a tall bronze haired boy who was very handsome and seemed to be looking around while at the same time trying not to look like he was paying attention. Then Hadrian looked at the last boy that was standing with them and had a hard time keeping his heart from beating right out of his chest.
The boy was as big as a bear all muscles and a head taller than the rest. He had curling dark hair cut short, pale skin and seemed to be Hadrian's dream man come to life. They all had one thing in common that shouldn't have been for a group of kids that weren't actually supposed to be related. They all had beautiful, mesmerizing gold eyes.
They were not human.
"Hadrian," Jessica said and yanked on Hadrian's arm making him scowl and turn to her.
"What?" He asked a bit sharper than he meant.
The girl let go of his arm and smiled at him moving closer. Hadrian took a step back. He just didn't know how he was ever going to let the girl know that he was not interested in girls. He had already said it so many times.
"Mike called your name a few times but you didn't answer. Did you miss the first week because you were sick?" Jessica asked.
"No, I missed because my family was on vacation overseas. I was in a martial arts competition. The finals were three days ago," Hadrian said looking away from Jessica and back to where the five non-humans were still standing. He was mentally going through one of his books in his head to identify them and he finally had it. He grinned.
"Wow, that is so neat your dads are so much cooler than mine. What did you place?" Tyler asked.
"Oh, I placed Second. It was really cool. Hey, I will see you lot in class," Hadrian said and started to walk away. Jessica grabbed his arm.
"Where are you going?" She asked. Hadrian shrugged her hand off.
"I am going to introduce myself to the new kids. Everyone looks like they are avoiding them. It is quite rude. Excuse me," Hadrian said and headed toward the opposite side of the parking lot.
He smiled at the group of teens. He felt a brush against his mind and strengthened his occlumency walls. He looked at the tall bronze-haired boy and shook his head. The boy looked shocked.
"It is very rude to try and read someone's mind without even knowing their name first," Hadrian smiled at the boy to let them know that he wasn't actually angry or anything.
"What are you?" The tall boy asked.
"A wizard and you lot are vampires. Well, a type of vampire. I have read about you in one of the books that my Dad bought me, but I’ve never met one in person before," Hadrian saw all of them look at him in shock. All of them except the small dark-haired girl. She was grinning and pulled Hadrian into a hug.
"I have never met a wizard before. I am Alice. You and I are going to be great friends. This is Rosalie, Jasper, Edward, and Emmett. You were not here the first week," Alice said after introducing her 'siblings'. Hadrian smiled at her and blushed just a little when he had been introduced to Emmett the large bear of a teen.
"I am Hadrian, I would appreciate keeping the wizard thing a secret, please. I also swear not to tell anyone that you’re vampires. This is so exciting," Hadrian told her.
"I have never even heard of wizards before," Emmitt said and the others nodded their agreement. Hadrian smiled.
"That is because we aren't allowed to tell non-magical people about us. It makes our government a bit testy when they have to clean up those messes," Hadrian explained.
"We aren't magic," said the beautiful girl Rosalie.
"Of course you are. Your very existence is magical. You are by Wixen definition a magical being. Therefore, you fall under out statute of secrecy," Hadrian told them.
"You smell like lightning and not at all like something I want to eat. It is amazing. Like I can scent your blood, but it also doesn't smell like something I want to actually eat," Alice said and leaned in and took a sniff of Hadrian. Which Hadrian thought was hilarious. The tall blonde boy looked surprised and took a subtle sniff of him as well and seemed to relax only a little and smiled a Hadrian.
"You do smell like lightning. I don't want to bite you. That is amazing," Jasper said. Alice smiled and took his hand.
"Jasper is our newest vegetarian. He still struggles with control," Alice explained to Hadrian. He nodded and grinned.
"Well, anytime you feel like eating someone you are welcome to come sit next to me and smell me for a bit," Hadrian teased. Emmitt laughed and Hadrian was quite proud of himself.
"So you missed the first week of school because of a martial arts competition?" Emmitt asked. Telling Hadrian that they had overheard his conversation with the others earlier. He shook his head no.
"That is what I told them because I can't tell them the real reason. I was actually in a very large dueling competition. It is a Wixen thing. I traveled with my family to England, Russia, Bulgaria, Africa, Brazil, Japan, and France for the competitions. There were a couple hundred of us to start with. I placed Second. It was really cool," Hadrian told them.
"Nice, so I would love to see you do magic," Alice stated with an excited grin. Hadrian smiled.
"I would love to show you but we can't be here when I do it. I promised my dads that I wouldn't do magic at school unless it was an emergency," Hadrian said.
"Hadrian," Hadrian turned at the sound of his uncle’s voice.
Remus was walking toward them with a sheet of paper in his hands. He got closer and then sniffed and went a bit stiff before physically making himself relax.
"You hadn't been in to get your schedule yet so I thought I would bring it out to you."
"Thanks, Uncle Mooney. I got distracted. These are your new students. This is Rosalie, Jasper, Emmitt, Edward, and Alice. They are vampires," Hadrian said quietly but excitedly. Remus smiled at him and ruffled his hair.
"I know, Pup. I can smell them. I am sure they can smell me too. I am Remus Lupin; I teach English Lit. here. So, you may call me Remus outside of school since I can see from those two," He pointed at Hadrian and Alice who were standing close and grinning at each other. "that we will probably see a lot of you. But at school, I am Mr. Lupin. Now the bell will be ringing soon for class. Why don't you lot start heading that way. Hadrian you are going to be the one to tell your dad that you made friends with Vampires your first day back." Then Remus was striding away, and Hadrian could tell he was working hard to keep from laughing.
"You have a werewolf for an uncle?" Rosalie asked. Hadrian nodded. He couldn’t get a read on her, but she reminded him of Draco. Snobby and too pretty to be amongst the mortals.
"Yeah, but he has had the cure. He has control over his shifts now and maintains complete control of himself when he is a wolf. He doesn't turn on a full moon or anything anymore, so it is all good," Hadrian told them as they made their way to the front of the school.
"Why is the little dark-haired girl glaring at Alice?" Emmett asked with amusement in his voice.
"She thinks that Hadrian is interested in Alice and she is pissed about it because she thinks he is hers," Edward answered. Hadrian glanced up at him and then rolled his eyes.
"Mind reader. I told you that was rude," Hadrian said. Edward looked sheepish.
"I don't actually know how to control it. I can't help but read minds. I can't turn it off," Edward admitted. Hadrian frowned.
"My father is excellent at occlumency and is really skilled with mind magics. He is the one who taught me how to block my mind. He might be able to help you," Hadrian offered.
"That would be really nice," Edward said. “As useful as it is to be able to hear people’s thoughts, it can be a bit of a headache.”
"So is she your ex?" Emmett asked nodding his head toward Jessica.
"No, gross. I don't like girls. But if I did, I still wouldn't date her. I have told her so many times that I am gay and very much not interested but she doesn't listen. It is so annoying," Hadrian told them.
"Oh, I see. Having a boyfriend should have stopped her," Rosalie stated. As if it was just a given that Hadrian had a boyfriend.
"It probably would. I have never had one though. Haven't felt that connection with anyone yet and I won't just date for the fun of it," Hadrian told her.
"So what classes do you have? Maybe Edward and I share some with you?" Alice asked.
Hadrian showed her his schedule and then they were off to their first class which they happened to share. This was going to be an interesting year. It would be nice to actually be able to go to school with people that he could talk to about his real life.
This is what he had always wanted with Bella and Jake. Plus, he was pretty sure that he was going to enjoy getting to know Emmett Cullen. He was also pretty sure his dad would have kittens when he found out. Yeah, interesting indeed.
