It has to be an illusion, after all she was dead. It had to be a trick. But Hermione was no fool. She realised soon enough that it was true. Lily Potter had come back to life as a result of Voldemort being defeated.
Hermione saw how the redhead greeted Severus, like old friends. Maybe more. Saw their tears and hugs. Also she noticed how James Potter hadn't come back.
Without waiting around, she bolted, tears streaming down her face. It was over, she knew it. Why would Severus still want her now? Harry had seen his memories, said it himself. Snape still loved Lily.
It was hopeless.
"Hermione?" Severus' voice came and Hermione realised he'd followed her outside.
Wiping her tears, she turned to face him.
His eyes widened at the sight of her tear-stricken face.
"What's happened?" With a flash he was next to her, hand grasping her cheek.
Hermione fought not to lean into his touch. "Nothing… I just needed some air."
"Why are you crying?"
"Nothing, I mean… for no reason. I'm just happy… a lot of people came back from the dead…"
His eyes narrowed at her. "Is this because of Lily?"
She couldn't face him, so her eyes focused on his feet. She couldn't really speak.
"Hermione, look at me," he said and forced her face up. "I am in love with you. Not Lily. Lily…. she's a friend. Or could be a friend. I've changed and last time she and I talked- we were both on different sides of the war. But her coming back… that won't change how I feel about you."
More tears threatened to fall from her eyes.
"But Harry said…."
"I don't think Potter thought much about what he was saying. Besides, I didn't show him the depth of my affection for you… all I could think was to give him the memories Dumbledore asked me to."
She sniffed. "So you… don't want Lily?"
He smiled at her, kissing her head. "No, my love. It is you I want."
