The Weasley Clan
Harry pushed to the door open to Harrison’s room slowly, just in case anybody tried anything. Fortunately it seemed neither inhabitants of the room had noticed him. He got a slight lump in his throat at the sight of Dobby, jumping up and down on Harrison’s bed as Harrison tried to grab him.
Eventually Harry cleared his throat and both Dobby and Harrison froze as their attention snapped towards him.
“Harry!” Harrison cried as he scrambled to try and block Dobby from view, “This isn’t what it looks like!”
Harry raised an eyebrow, “You mean a rogue house-elf didn’t barge into your room and start making demands at you?”
Harrison blinked, “Oh uh… I suppose it is what it looks like.”
“Dobby is not a rogue house-elf!” Dobby cried as he ran forward.
“I assume he’s with the school elves although he’s not like any of the others…” Harrison said.
“Dobby isn’t a Hogwarts elf sir!” Dobby said, “Dobby came to warn Harrison Potter, he must leave Hogwarts immediately!”
“What?” Harrison said with a frown, “Why?”
“Harrison Potter is in danger! He cannot stay at Hogwarts!” Dobby insisted with panic.
Harrison frowned, “Danger? What sort of danger could I get in at Hogwarts?”
Images of dementors, dragons and Death Eaters flashed across Harry’s mind but he decided not to voice his thoughts.
“Dobby cannot say more sir,” Dobby replied nervously, “But there is a danger coming to Hogwarts this year and… and…”
Dobby ran forward and grabbed a large book by Harrison’s trunk and started to hit himself in the head.
“Hey!” Harrison cried and ran forward, trying to wrench the book from Dobby's hands, “Stop that!”
“Dobby must be punished!” Dobby insisted as he held onto the book with an impressive amount of strength.
“Punished for what!?” Harrison said as he finally pulled the book away from Dobby.
“For disobeying Dobby’s masters,” Dobby said as his eyes snapped around the room, presumably looking for something else to punish himself with, “But Dobby must warn Harrison Potter of the dangers at Hogwarts.”
“But Dobby, how can Hogwarts be dangerous? It has Dumbledore here,” Harrison said, “And besides, I live here now, where am I supposed to go?”
“Anywhere!” Dobby cried, “But you cannot stay here. There is a great evil coming to Hogwarts and Harrison Potter must be protected!”
“From what?” Harrison asked.
Dobby’s eyes bugged out of his head as if he wanted to answer but couldn’t. Before he could start to hurt himself again Harry decided to intervene.
“I think,” he said cautiously, trying not to set Dobby off, “What he’s trying to say is that someone is trying to endanger the school. But because of his bond with his master he can’t tell us who is doing it or what it is exactly they’re doing.”
Dobby nodded violently, “Yes! Sir Harrison Potter's brother is correct!”
Harrison sighed, “Really? Do we look that similar?”
“Oh no,” Dobby said with the shake of his head, “It is not in your physical appearance. Us house-elves can sense a slight aura in wizards. You twos have exactly the same aura. Except yours is covered in something… dark.” Dobby said and looked at Harry.
“Shouldn’t we be focused on the danger Harrison is in?” Harry said quickly before Dobby could say anymore.
“Yes!” Dobby agreed, “Harrison Potter must get as far away from Hogwarts as possible!”
“Dobby I can’t just run away from Hogwarts even if I wanted to,” Harrison said with a shake of his head, “Hogwarts is my home, I’m not going anywhere.”
“Dobby cannot allow that!” Dobby said in panic.
Harrison frowned, “Well I’m sorry Dobby but you don’t seem to be in any position to make me do anything.”
Harry’s eyes widened, “Harrison! Don’t say-”
Dobby snapped his fingers and the warm comforts of their living space vanished around them as Harry and Harrison appeared in the middle of the Scottish highlands.
“-that.” Harry finished with a sigh.
Harrison’s teeth immediately began to chatter, even in the middle of summer being halfway up a mountain in the dead of night in northern Scotland wasn’t exactly warm.
“What the- How did he do that!?”
Harry ran his hand through his hair, “He’s a house elf, they have powerful, if limited, magic.”
The wind picked up as Harrison looked around, “Where are we!?”
“I don’t think we’re too far from the castle,” Harry said, “Maybe only a couple of miles at best looking at the scenery. Though I have no idea which way to go.”
“That way,” Harrison said, pointing away from them as he looked up at the sky.
Harry frowned at him, “How do you know that?”
“Don’t you ever pay attention in astrology class?” Harrison asked with a snort.
Harry grumbled as the pair trudged their way back to the castle. For a moment Harry had been thrilled to see Dobby again. Then he remembered why he had so many different curse words associated with the elf.
Eventually they saw the castle appear in the distance, its tall towers blocking out the stars. Luckily as they walked up to the front door they found it wide open. Unluckily standing in the doorway was a very angry McGonagall wearing a dark red robe and fluffy slippers.
“Ah uh… Hello Professor,” Harry said with a smile as they approached.
“DON’T YOU DARE!” McGonagall screeched, causing both boys to wince, “In all my years I’ve never seen two students with the audacity to-”
Harry dared to clear his throat. For a moment it looked like his life was about to be extinguished by McGonagall's look of rage.
“Um Professor, can I just confirm what you think we did?”
“IS THIS A JOKE!?” McGonagall bellowed and thrust a piece of paper in front of their faces.
Dear Professor,
We have decided we no longer want to live at Hogwarts and will be running away immediately.
From,
Harrison Potter and his brother.
Harry and Harrison read the scrawly handwritten note.
“We didn’t write this, Professor!” Harrison said desperately, “There was a house-elf, he must have written it after he teleported us out of the school!”
“Don’t be so ridiculous Mr Potter!” McGonagall snapped.
“It’s the truth!” Harrison said and Harry could tell his temper was rising.
McGonagall huffed, “Mipsy!”
A female house-elf appeared next to McGonagall. She looked far healthier than any other house-elf Harry had ever seen and she carried herself in a way not unlike many pureblood wizards.
“Yes Professor McGonagall? What can Mipsy be doing for you?”
“Did any of the elves of Hogwarts write me this note and apparate My Silver and Mr Potter out of the castle?” McGonagall asked, Harry realised this must be the head house-elf of Hogwarts.
“No Ma’am,” Mipsy said, “He was not from Hogwarts.”
“You see boys, I won’t accept lying of any- wait WHAT!?” McGonagall hissed as her attention snapped back to Mipsy, “What do you mean he wasn’t from the school!?”
“The house-elf who moved them out of the castle was not one of the Hogwarts elves Ma’am,” Mipsy explained, “He was from another wizarding family though Mipsy doesn’t know which one. He apparated the young masters out of the castle and left this note on your door.”
“And you just let this happen!?”
Mipsy’s eyes widened, seemingly realising it was now her on the end of McGonagall's wrath, “Well, it isn’t technically against school rules Ma’am. Many years ago young masters and missers would bring their elves from home.”
McGonagall let out a string of curse words in such a thick Scottish accent Harry couldn’t pick up a single one.
“Has there been any other issues from this rogue elf?” McGonagall asked as she pinched the bridge of her nose.
Mipsy looked a little nervous as she answered, “He did attempt to stop Master Potter receiving any mail but Mipsy was able to counter that.”
McGonagall took a deep slow breath, “And you didn’t inform myself or the headmaster?”
“Mipsy told the Headmaster but he said it was probably someone trying to play a prank.”
McGonagall’s eyes twitched, “I see. Mipsy from now on any house-elf not from Hogwarts is banned from the castle and if any house-elf interferes with the goings on of the castle and its students in any way you will inform both the headmaster AND myself. Am I clear?”
Mipsy nodded her head so violently Harry thought it might fall off.
“Very well, you may return to your duties,” McGonagall said and Mipsy vanished.
“As for you two,” McGonagall said, turning back to Harry and Harrison, “Just go back to bed. I need to go and have a word with our esteemed headmaster.” She growled out.
Harry actually felt sorry for the old man.
Harrison was quick to write to their friends about the Dobby incident. Most were under the same agreement as Dumbledore, it was probably some elaborate prank by a pureblood wizard. Fred and George lambasted about how utterly lazy the prank was. By the afternoon after it had happened Harrison was convinced it was just some stupid joke and completely forgot about Dobby’s warning.
Harry kept his mouth firmly shut. He knew of course the warnings were serious but he couldn’t go saying that without looking a little mad and suspicious. Besides, if his plan worked Harrison wouldn’t ever have to deal with the Chamber of Secrets or even be aware of its existence.
A few days after their night with Dobby Harry and Harrison received a letter that put the final piece of Harry’s plan in place.
Hello fellow (non) Twins,
Still being harassed by house-elves? Maybe the next one will put you in the great lake, though knowing Harry he’d just end up going for a leisurely swim. We told Mum and Dad about what happened, boy was that a mistake. Dad started asking every ministry worker he knows about rouge house-elves and Mum has written about five letters to Dumbledore saying an empty school is no place to spend the summer. Don’t worry we managed to talk her down. Trust us between Ron moping around bored all summer, Ginny having three panic attacks a day about starting Hogwarts and Percy walking around like a pompous ass you guys have it easy.
Anyway, enough about our woes, what are you guys doing about getting school supplies? We’re getting ours next Wednesday, Hermione should be tagging along too. What do you say? Want to come with?
From,
Gred and Feorge (See, you guys can’t pull that joke because your names are too similar. Losers)
Harrison was of course thrilled at the idea of getting his supplies with the Weasleys. Harry too was of course excited to spend a day with his friends, but he had another motive. Being with Ginny meant Harry could intercept Tom Riddle’s diary before she ever had a chance to open it.
Of course it still left the Basilisk sleeping down in The Chamber but without the diary influencing her Ginny wouldn’t be opening it. It meant everyone could enjoy a normal year for a change while giving Harry plenty of time to work out a more long term solution.
Wednesday morning came and Harry and Harrison found themselves in Dumbledore's office ready to go. The man offered the pair of them a warm smile as they walked in.
“Good morning boys. How are we today?”
“Fine sir,” Harrison responded, “Ready to get out of the castle for a bit if I’m honest.”
Dumbledore let out a soft chuckle, “Yes I can imagine, though I love these walls after so many years they do all start to look the same. Now I trust you both have your school lists for the year?”
“Yes sir,” Harry confirmed.
“Excellent, now there’s just the matter of how to pay for them.” Dumbledore said and reached into his desk drawer, pulling out three Gringotts keys.
“Now Harrison as a ward of Hogwarts your Aunt and Uncle are no longer in charge of your Vaults.”
Harrison’s eyes widened in panic and his face paled, “You mean Vernon and Petunia have been using my vaults this entire time!?”
“An… no,” Dumbledore said with a slightly guilty look, “When I left you in their care I didn’t think it prudent to entrust a muggle family with your wizarding vaults. Especially considering there… substantial contents. It seems I was correct, at least in that regard.”
“So I can access all my vaults now?” Harrison asked.
“I’m afraid not,” Dumbledore confessed, he pushed forward a large iron key on the desk, “You may recognize this. This is the key to your trust fund vault. Ever since your birth a set amount of Galleons has transferred from the main Potter vault into this one. I imagine your parents' original plan was to use it to help buy clothes, birthday presents and anything else a growing wizard needs before handing you the key over when you started Hogwarts. Obviously however it was not touched until last year so a rather large amount of coins has gathered within it, though I do urge you not to spend it all at once. Though between us I think a broom was a worthy expense.” Dumbledore said with a wink.
He then grabbed the second key, it was much larger than the first and looked substantially older, “Now this key is for the main Potter Vault. To put it bluntly it contains your entire family fortune. Again this has remained largely untouched bar the transfer to your trust vault. I’m afraid any income has also dried up due to nobody having access to the vault to sort out the old business deals your parents made.”
“My parents had business deals?” Harrison asked.
“Of course! Though not quite as wealthy as other wizarding families the Potters have always had a rather strong reputation for trading. Your grandfather Charles was quite the businessman, though in the aftermath of the last war there was nobody to manage your business investments. Luckily now that you’re a ward of Hogwarts it has given the teachers here limited access to your vaults. We’re not able to withdraw anything but Professor Snape has kindly set up a few income streams by purchasing shares in some companies he knows and trusts.”
Harry for one couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Of course he’d always known he was wealthy in his old timeline but this was all new information for him.
“Now to be clear you’ll be unable to take any money out of this vault without my approval until you’re seventeen,” Dumbledore said, “Though the key is yours to keep. And to put any concerns at risk though you are a ward of the castle no teacher has authorisation to take money out of your vault without your permission.”
Harrison took both keys and stored them in his pockets, looking a little awestruck.
“Now MR Silver,” Dumbledore said and turned to Harry, passing him a much smaller key, “This key is to your vault, originally set up by Hogwarts as an orphaned student. Like Mr Potters you receive a lump sum every year. It is entirely up to you what you do with the gold inside, however unlike Mr Potter the teachers here do assert some control over your finances as it is money coming straight from Hogwarts.”
Dumbledore passed Harry the key which he inspected before slipping it into his pocket.
“Now then, you’ll be using floo powder to travel the Leaky Cauldron. Floo powder is the main method of transportation from wizarding community to wizarding community. It’s quite simple really, you take a handful of floo powder, clearly say where you wish to travel to and throw the powder into the fire. You’re then pulled through the vast floo network until you reach your destination.” Dumbledore explained as he stood up and walked over to the large fireplace behind his desk.
“So we just say Diagon Alley?” Harrison asked.
“Ah, while that would indeed work it pays to be precise in all manner of magic. I suggest you specify your destination as The Leaky Cauldron to avoid any unnecessary risk. Now a quick practice I think, please act as if you’re throwing down the powder and speak clearly.”
Harry and Harrison both threw their hands down and spoke at the same time.
Dumbledore nodded, “Excellent Mr Silver, Mr Potter that was a little rushed, make sure to speak clearly and slowly. Now as for your return trip I’ll leave my floo network open to you at 4pm for exactly thirty minutes. Please do not be late and simply say ‘The Headmasters Office, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’ to return.”
The pair nodded and Harrison went first. He looked a little nervous but spoke clearly before being engulfed by the flames.
With a smile from Dumbledore Harry walked up and cleared his throat, “The Leaky Cauldron!”
Harry felt himself be pulled into the floo network and watched as grates flew by. After what felt like an age but was probably only a few moments he stumbled through a fireplace and into The Leaky Cauldron.
For a minute Harry thought for once he would actually stay upright after taking the floo. But then he tripped over Harrison’s collapsed form and joined him in a heap on the ground.
“Ah! Sorry Harry!”
“Harrison, move your leg!”
“Harry, your arm is pinning me down!”
“I’d move my arm if you moved your leg!”
“I’d move my leg if you’d move your arse!”
“Twins who aren’t twins!”
The pair looked up from their tangle of limbs as Fred and George ran over two of them. The larger boys reached down and managed to pull them apart and back onto their feet.
“You have to tell us!” Fred said eagerly.
“What’s it like spending summer in Hogwarts!?” George continued.
“Pulled any great pranks?”
“Set up any great pranks for when the year starts?”
“Honestly,” Harry said with a shrug, “It’s a little dull.”
“Yeah,” Harrison agreed, “Most of the school just kinda shuts down so I've mostly been reading. I’ve already done all my summer homework.”
The twins' faces dropped.
“At least Hermione will be pleased.” George muttered.
“Come on,” Fred said with a chuckle, “Everyone is this way.”
They made their way through the pub, Harrison trying to avoid making eye contact with anyone.
Near the entrance to Diagon Alley was a group of wizards dominated by redheads. The entire Weasley clan was present and Harry recognised Hermione and her parents.
Hermione was the first to notice them, “Harry! Harrison!”
She ran over to the pair of them and gave Harrison a tight squeeze which he returned with just as much enthusiasm. Harry’s hug was a little more awkward but the beam on Hermione’s face was no less for it.
“How have you both been? Oh Harrison I’m so jealous that you’ve been able to take books out of the Hogwarts library all summer! Ms Prince only allowed me to take ten books home with me!”
A broad shouldered man with wild brown hair laughed as he walked up behind Hermione and patted her on the back.
“And we had to stop you reading all of them within two weeks, there are other things in this world besides reading you know dear.”
“But Dad!” Hermione pouted, “If I don’t keep up with my studies I’ll fall behind!”
“I highly doubt every book you’ve read this summer was required reading,” Her father mocked before turning to Harry and Harrison, “Dan Granger, I’m Hermione’s father. You must be Harry and Harrison correct? I’ve heard a lot about you, along with that Tonks girl.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr Granger,” Harrison said nervously and held out his hand.
“Please call me Dan,” Mr Granger said and shook Harrison’s hand, “Now I’m afraid me and my wife can’t stay, we have an emergency appointment to get to. Hermione, Mr Weasley has your money to exchange to uh… what is it?”
“Galleons Dad.”
“Right, we’ll pick you up at four, have fun sweetheart!”
The Grangers quickly made their escape which opened up the way for Mrs Weasley to rush over.
“Oh Harrison dear!” She cried as she wrapped Harrison up a tight hug, “How are you? Is Dumbledore making sure you’re well fed at that school? Oh you look so thin!”
Harrison had frozen solid, clearly unsure how to deal with the motherly attack.
“Muuuum!” Fred groaned, “Leave him alone! Poor kid only just got here.”
Mrs Weasley blushed and took a step back.
“It’s nice to meet you Mrs Weasley.” Harrison said.
Mrs Weasley beamed at him before turning to Harry, “And you must be… Mr Silver? Correct?” She said with an outstretched hand.
“Ah yes,” Harry said, trying not to let the slightly chilly greeting put him down, “It’s nice to meet you ma’am.”
“Ah hello boys!” Came a much more cheerful Mr Weasley as he shook their hands eagerly, “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you both. I just wanted to again apologise for what happened last year with the troll. Rest assured the twins have done nothing but chores all summer.”
“It really is no problem Sir,” Harrison said, “They looked out for us more than enough in return last year.”
Mr Weasley waved him off, “You’ve also met Ron and Percy of course.”
Percy was content to ignore the pair while Ron gave them both an awkward shrug.
“And this is our daughter, Ginny.”
Ginny realised the attention was on her and squeaked in fear before ducking behind her fathers legs. Harry offered her a smile and she blushed furiously.
“You’ll have to excuse her,” Mr Weasley said with a chuckle, “She can be a little shy.”
“Only around THE Harrison Potter,” Fred joked, causing both Ginny and Harrison to blush.
“Enough Fred,” Mr Weasley said with a sigh, “Now, we should get going.”
The odd group of people made their way out of the pub and into the alley. The three non-Weasley children present hung back just behind the chaotic family. Harrison and Hermione eagerly chatted about the books they’d both read while Harry just enjoyed the warm weather.
At Gringotts Mr Weasley stayed behind with Hermione while she exchanged her muggle money (much to Mt Weasley’s curiosity) while everyone else piled into a cart to the vaults. At least Harry was spared the embarrassment this time of having a vault overflowing with gold compared to what The Weasley’s had. Though even his new vault still had a reasonable pile in it.
Once they were out in the fresh air Mrs Weasley turned and asked what they all needed.
“Quidditch supplies.”
“New robes.”
“I need my wand serviced.”
“The latest edition of Hogwarts a History just came out.”
“I’m nearly out of potion supplies.”
“Scabbers needs more food.”
“I need everything…”
Mrs Weasley looked at the gathered children with exasperation, “Ok ok, let's all split up and meet back at Flourish and Blotts in a couple of hours. Ginny, you come with me.”
Ginny didn’t look too pleased but didn’t put up a fight as Mrs Weasley grabbed her hand and dragged her away.
“Come on Ron, we best make sure you don’t buy the incorrect rat food again.” Mr Weasley said as Ron blushed with embarrassment before being led away.
Percy was content to head out on his own while the twins decided to try and find their friend Lee Jordan. It left Harry, Harrison and Hermione standing alone.
“Ohhh did you guys know a new bookstore opened up recently, apparently it’s full of really old books you wouldn’t normally get in Flourish and Blotts. I was hoping to see if they had any limited edition copies of Hogwarts a History.” Hermione said excitedly.
“That sounds fun to check out,” Harrison responded with a large smile, “Coming Harry?”
Harry went to nod his head before pausing at the thought of spending an entire day in an old bookstore with Harrison and Hermione.
“You two go on ahead, I’ve still got some stuff to pick up before school starts.”
The pair looked a little disappointed but waved goodbye as they took off leaving Harry alone in the street. Harry frowned slightly at being the only one left alone but quickly shrugged it off.
Being alone meant he quickly managed to get all his things for the school year. He even treated himself to a cleaning kit for his new broom.
With nothing urgent left to do until he had to meet up with everyone Harry simply wandered through the alley, appreciating all the shops that had been closed for years back in his timeline due to the war.
Once upon a time the darker and smaller streets of Diagon Alley would have scared Harry into staying away from them. However compared to what Harry had faced during the war a dark and mysterious alley was like a summer holiday for him.
The strange twelve year old walking down the streets got a few odd looks and one drunken wizard tried his luck at mugging Harry, but a quick hiss and the appearance of his new snake charm made the wizard stumble back.
Harry soon found himself pushing open the door of an old looking shop, tucked away in a corner of an alley far from the main street. The name ‘Dede’s Nick Naks’ hung over the door and as Harry walked inside he saw a small shop that looked like someone had just dumped all the junk they didn’t want. Half of it wasn’t labelled and nearly all of it had a coating of dust. As did the small old lady napping behind the counter, not even aware Harry had walked in.
He browsed the various items, trying to guess what they all did.
“Hello.”
Harry nearly jumped out of his skin as his head snapped to the side. A small girl with dirty-blonde hair and pale silvery eyes was looking up at him with a curious expression.
“L-Luna!?” Harry gasped without thinking.
Luna Lovegood tilted her head as she watched him, “You know my name? Are you a seer? Or did a Moon Frog tell you? Do I know your name?” Luna’s face scrunched up in thought, “No, I don’t.”
“I’m uh Harry Silver,” Harry said as he caught his breath, calming down from the shock.
“It’s nice to meet you Harry Silver,” Luna said, “I’m surprised, I normally don’t see anyone else in Dede’s shop when I visit.”
Harry cleared his throat, finally able to smile at his old friend, “I was just browsing through various shops to kill time.”
“I see,” Luna hummed, “Mother says most of the stuff in here is junk but I don’t think there is such a thing as junk.”
Harry nearly tripped up.
“Y-Your mother?”
“Luna dear, are you in here?”
Harry’s heart was in for another shock when a tall blonde woman walked in through the shop door. She was almost a splitting image of Luna with long hair down to her lower back though unlike Luna’s eyes, which were dreamy and full of curiosity, her mothers eyes were sharp and focused. As she walked into the shop she didn’t carry herself unlike Nacrassia Malfoy or other high standing pureblood witches. But whereas Malfoy walked with an air of arrogance Luna’s mother walked with confidence but also kindness, smiling at the two children.
“Ah there you are Luna,” She said as she walked up to them, “How many times do I have to tell you not to wander alone?”
“Sorry Mummy,” Luna said, “But I was desperate to see if Dede had anything new.”
Luna’s mother sighed, “Dede hasn’t had anything new in five years sweetie. Oh? Who’s your friend?” She asked as she spotted Harry.
“This is Harry Silver,” Luna said, “He seems quite easy to scare, he looks terrified of you.”
Luna’s words snapped Harry out of his shocked state, “Oh um… S-Sorry. I’m Harry, nice to meet you Ma’am.”
“Nice to meet you too, I’m Pandora Lovegood, Luna’s mother.” She said and held out her hand which Harry shook, “I’m curious Harry, are you a student at Hogwarts?”
Harry nodded, “Yes, I’m about to start my second year.”
“What house are you in?” Luna asked him.
Harry gulped, he knew Luna was about the least prejudiced person he’d ever met but he also knew her bullying had been just as bad as his in their original timeline.
“Slytherin.”
“Ah, my old house,” Pandora said with a chuckle, surprising Harry, “How is it?”
“It’s fine. I don’t think everyone there likes me but I have some good friends.” Harry admitted.
“Oh?” Pandora asked, “You seem like a polite and intelligent young man? How could anyone not like you?”
“I’m a muggleborn,” Harry said and a look of understanding came over Pandora’s face.
“Ah, I see Slytherin still hasn’t gotten over its blood prejudice.” Pandora said with a sigh, “Still I’m glad it doesn’t seem terrible for you in there. Now I also have to ask what a second year Hogwarts student is doing wandering around here alone? Are your parents nearby?”
“My parents died when I was young,” Harry said, “I live at Hogwarts and am here with The Weasley’s.”
“Oh I’m sorry dear,” Pandora said and smiled at him sympathetically, “But these streets really aren’t safe to be travelling alone. Allow me to escort you back to The Weasley’s.”
“Sure,” Harry agreed and followed Pandora out of the shop.
As they walked back towards the main street Luna prodded him on the side.
“I’m sorry about your parents, if it makes you feel any better my Daddy died a few years ago in an accident.”
Harry’s breath hitched in his throat and he felt his gut twist uncomfortably. Xenophilius Lovegood was dead. A man Harry had learned to trust and respect.
This must be why Luna’s mother was alive. In this timeline the accident had taken place but had killed her father instead of her mother. Looking at Luna now Harry could see the subtle differences in her. Her outfit was more put together, her hair had been brushed and she looked to be cleaner in general. Her mother must have put more emphasis on appearance than her father.
What was Harry supposed to think about all this? Would Xenophilius be happy to take his wife's place? Would Pandora forgive Harry if she knew the truth? What would Luna think if she knew Harry was to blame for her current situation?
Another prodding on his side brought Harry back to reality.
“Are you ok Harry?” Luna asked, “You look like you’ve seen a ghost. And not the friendly kind.”
“Sorry,” Harry said and shook his head of his spiralling thoughts, “I got distracted.”
Luna frowned up at him, “That’s odd. Most people are full of Wrackspurts when that happens, but you don’t seem to have any.”
“Luna dear,” Pandora called from in front of them both, “Remember it’s rude to talk about people like that.”
“Oh yes, sorry Harry,” Luna said, “Wrackspurts are tiny invisible creatures that mess with your brain.”
Harry looked at her and smiled, “I hear they can make people fail exams.”
Luna beamed up at him.
“Ah,” Pandora said as they reached the main street, “There’s Molly.”
She led Harry and Luna to the front of Flourish and Blotts where Mrs Weasley was fussing over an embarrassed looking Ginny.
“Hello Molly.”
“Pandora? Oh how wonderful to see you!”
The two women quickly became engrossed in conversation as they waited for the rest of the group to appear. Ginny gave Luna a soft smile.
“Hi Luna.”
“Hello Ginny,” Luna greeted, “Are you shopping for Hogwarts too?”
“Yes,” Ginny said, seemingly more confident with Luna around, “Although we have most of our things now. We’re just waiting on everyone else to buy our books. Um… Hello again Harry.”
“Hi Ginny!” Harry said cherrily with a wave.
“I found Harry in a shop, he looked confused.” Luna said as a way of explanation for their meeting.
“Oh… right….” Ginny responded, looking between the pair with a slight nervousness.
“What house do you think you’ll be in?” Luna asked, completely ignorant of Ginny’s awkward demeanour.
“Probably Gryffindor,” Ginny said, looking a little down, “Just like all my brothers… You?”
“I’m not sure.” Luna confessed, “What are the houses like Harry?”
Harry blinked as both girls looked up at him, “Oh. Uhhh. Well I suppose it depends what you want for your house I guess. Hufflepuff is all about hard work but also friends, they’re probably the closest house as a single unit, internal bullying or even disagreements is unheard of. Then I’d say it’s Gryffindor but they tend to argue a lot and can be a little brash. Ravenclaw is the quietest house, a lot of people think they’re all bookworms but intelligence isn’t just reading books. Slytherin is probably the most complex house but it’s where you’ll make real friends. I don’t have many friends in my house but the ones I do have I’d trust with my life.”
“So it’s true,” Ginny said with a little apprehension, “You’re a… Slytherin?”
Harry frowned, “It’s not a disease you know.”
“Sorry,” Ginny said and a deep blush, “It’s just Ron keeps telling me not to trust Slytherin and Percy doesn’t seem to be keen about it either. The twins said it’s all rubbish though.”
Harry shrugged, “Eh, they’re not completely wrong. Half the house is made up of morons but it’s a good house if you want to try and stand out and make a name for yourself.”
“Stand out?” Ginny asked and Harry nodded his head.
“A lot of people go into Slytherin trying to get out from their parents shadow or make a name for their family.”
“I see…” Ginny mumbled.
A few moments later the rest of their group arrived. Harrison and Hermione both had armfuls of books and wide smiles as they returned. The Lovegoods elected to stay with them as they all made their way into the shop.
“Gilderoy Lockhart?” Ron said as he caught sight of the sign by the door, “Who’s that?”
“Oh no,” Harrison groaned, “Can we go elsewhere for our books?”
“Whatever for dear?” Mrs Weasley said and looked at him, “Not only is this the cheapest place to get your books they always have the full supply.”
“I think I know why…” Pandora muttered as Gilderoy Lockhart made an appearance.
Nearly every woman in the place swooned as Lockhart made his appearance.
“It’s him!” Hermione squealed to Harry and Harrison, “Did you know he’s written every book for our Defence classes this year?”
“Yeah we know…” Harrison muttered.
“There’s a reason for that…” Harry grumbled.
Harrison tried to hide behind the assortment of Weasleys but he wasn’t fast enough. Lockhart spotted him among the crowd.
“Harrison!” He shouted with a wide smile, “My boy, why didn’t you tell me you would be here today!”
Harrison winced as he was shoved forward before Lockhart threw an arm around his shoulders.
“Why it’s been too long since we last saw each other!” Lockhart cheered with a smile and a wink at the crowd.
“Oh!?” A Daily Prophet reporter said, their mouth watering with the possibility of a story, “Do you two each other?”
“But of course!” Lockhart claimed with a toothy grin, “You see ever since poor Harrison here lost his parents he’s been looked after by the teachers of Hogwarts. And you see, as of next month that shall include me! Yes my dears I am proud to announce I have taken up a position as Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts! And you see as Harrison is a ward of Hogwarts why that practically makes us family.”
Harrison looked like he wanted to be sick at what Lockhart was saying, not that the man noticed, he was too busy soaking up the limelight. Harry felt his fist clench before he stepped forward.
“This will make the front page!” The reporter said excitedly.
At least he did until Harry ‘accidently’ bumped into his back, causing his camera to drop to the floor and smash. Of course a simple reparo would fix it but not before Harry’s snake charm managed to slither out and steal the film.
“Oi!” The reporter snapped at Harry, “Watch where you’re going kid!”
Harry ignored him as he approached Lockhart and Harrison.
“Harrison, we’re going to be late to get back to Dumbledore.” Harry said.
Harrison gave Harry a confused look before it clicked, “Uh right… You wouldn’t want us to be late, would you Mr Lockhart?”
The mention of Dumbledore’s name seemed to be the only thing capable of getting Lockharts attention. He let out a boisterous if fake laugh.
“Of course, of course Harrison. Your friend Mr Copper-”
“It’s Silver.”
“-is correct. I wouldn’t want to keep you! But before you go, please accept this gift. My complete works. For free of course!”
Lockhart gave the crowd a toothy grin as they all clapped and swooned. Harrison used the distraction to wiggle out of his arms and rejoin Harry.
“Thanks,” he said as he and Harry walked to the back of the store where everyone else was waiting.
“I can’t believe you got his complete set for free!” Hermione moaned.
“Yeah uh… You can have them,” Harrison said and handed Hermione the books, “I don’t think they’re for me.”
Hermione took the books with excitement as Luna watched on in amusement.
Pandora watched Lockhart play to the crowd and clicked her tongue, “I can’t believe Dumbledore hired that man.”
“Well why wouldn’t he!?” Mrs Weasley snapped, “Just look at all the books he’s written, he must be an expert in the subject.”
“I’m sure he is…” Pandora said and Harry felt like she was trying not to roll her eyes.
“Well well well,” A slimy and arrogant voice said, “That was quite the show Potter.”
Harry sighed as Draco Malfoy made an appearance looking over the group with mild disgust.
“You just wish it was you instead,” Ron snapped at Malfoy.
“Well hello Draco,” Harry said with just a hint of sarcasm.
Malfoy made eye contact with him and his jaw clenched. He was clearly caught between wanting to insult every person present and the eternal Slytherin rule of unity. Harry smirked at him, daring him to say something.
Luckily (at least for Malfoy) the situation was intervened by the appearance of an ever more annoying blonde.
“Ah if it isn’t The Weasleys and… friends.” Lucious Malfoy said as he appeared next to his son his eyes scanning over the group with mild disgust.
“Lucious,” Pandora said smoothly, “I’m surprised you’re not at today’s Wizengamot session.”
Harry swore he saw Lucious’ eye twitch, “As I’m sure you’re aware The Minister decided to automatically approve your request.”
Pandora gave Lucious the biggest shit eating grin Harry had ever seen, “Yes well, being The Head Unspeakable does have its perks.”
“You mean like getting your husband killed?”
Pandora’s jaw set as Mrs Weasley let out an affronted gasp. Mr Weasley stepped forward with a furious expression.
“That’s quite enough Malfoy! I don’t know who you think you are-”
“I know exactly who I am Weasley,” Lucious said, interrupting Mr Weasley, “And I know exactly who you are.”
He stepped forward and pulled Ginny’s books out of her cauldron. Harry eyed his movements carefully. This was the moment Ginny would receive Tom Riddle's diary.
“Second hand books I see,” Lucious sneered and threw Ginny’s books back, “Typical of a Weasley.”
“What’s wrong with second hand books?” Harrison said suddenly, making the adults around them look at him.
“Harrison Potter,” Lucious said in a way that made Harry’s skin crawl, “I’m disappointed someone of your stature doesn’t understand the issue with poor quality.”
Harry could feel Harrison tense up next to him as Lucious’ gaze snapped to Harry himself.
“Ah, you must be the Silver boy.” He said, “The muggleborn in Slytherin.”
“I am.” Harry confirmed, not breaking Lucious’ stare.
“You must be finding it rather… difficult to adapt to our world.” Lucious said with a smug grin.
“Not at all,” Harry said with a wide fake smile, “Actually it’s quite easy, I’ve noticed that those from wizarding families don’t necessarily have a leg up on us muggleborns. Just look at the results for last year, both myself and Hermione, two muggleborns, came 1st and 3rd in the year.”
Though he hid it well Harry could see the slight flare of Lucious’ nostrils and he allowed himself a small smirk.
“Well,” the man hissed and glanced towards Hermione, “At least an orphan like yourself won’t be bringing undesirable muggle parents into our world.”
Hermione gasped and burst into tears as the Weasley’s cried out in outrage. Harry clenched his fists and stepped forward. But Pandora beat him to it.
Luna’s mother stepped forward, glared at Lucious Malfoy. And punched him across the jaw.
Lucious had clearly not been expecting it and staggered back with a look of shock in his eyes. But he quickly overcame it and reached for his wand. Before he could, however, both Pandora and Mr Weasley’s wands were in his face.
“Please,” Pandora said, “Just give me a reason.”
Lucious’ jaw clenched before he swivelled on his feet, “Come Draco. We’re leaving.”
As soon as The Malfoy’s were out of the shop the attention turned to Hermione who was crying into Harrison’s shoulder. Mrs Weasley ran over in an attempt to comfort the poor girl as Pandora and Mr Weasley spoke quietly.
Harry used the distraction to make his way over Ginny.
“You ok?”
Ginny looked up at him and nodded, “I’ve never seen Dad like that before.”
“He was just being protective. Did they give you all your books back?” Harry asked and before she could respond Harry grabbed the pile of books Ginny had and flicked through them.
Then he flicked through them again.
Then again.
And finally one more time.
“Is everything ok Harry?” Ginny asked as she looked at him in confusion.
“Uh… fine,” Harry said as he gave her back her books before stepping to the side, trying not to have a meltdown.
It wasn’t there.
Lucious Malfoy hadn’t given Ginny Weasley Tom Riddle’s diary.
So where the hell was it?
