To the Moon and Back
Summary
Instead of choosing to go back and finish off Voldemort after he dies, Harry decides to board the train to go off to his next adventure. She wakes up as an infant with a new name and a new life, and only vague memories of being someone else.
Note
Fair warning, I wrote this on my phone. The story is complete, but was not beta read, and parts of it are very rough. Still, was tired of seeing this in my unposted story folder, so here you go.

Memories come and go, and most times feel like strange dreams, at least until her 9th birthday when her mother, Pandora, dies in a potions accident. Luna was caught in the explosion, and though it didn't kill her, it did leave her altered. All her memories of being Harry Potter were awakened, but in no particular order, it took years for her to sort through them, and just as long to realize they were real and about her past self she was now going to school with.

She tried to stay in the background, helping where she could without being too obvious, but unsure if she should change things, because bad things happen to those who meddle with time.

Things diverge in her third year. Seeing how her past self is being treated from the outside, she gets fed up with it. In her own airy way, she lends aide to Harry, first by lending him a book on dragons intended for dragon handlers.

Next, she curses all of the buttons Malfoy is handing out to say, "Someone's trying to kill me again, must be a Tuesday" instead of Potter stinks.

After that, she makes sure to intercept Rita after she interviews Harry, trapping her in a jar, blackmailing her into not printing trash about Harry.

After the first task she convinces Harry to go to Gringots (ie kidnaps him) so he can be officially emancipated and learn about his family and his place in wizarding society. He balks a bit, but then she points out that by accepting his lordship, he will never have to go back to the Dursleys, and he can also work to officially and lawfully declare Sirius innocent.

After that, she starts working on the horcruxes.

She noticed that after the accident that took her mother's life, she was far more powerful than she really should have been at that age. After some calculations, she figured she was only slightly less powerful than when she died as Harry Potter, also her core was still that of an adolescent, meaning she would likely continue to grow more powerful.

She convinces Harry to help her learn parsel magic, since he is a parselmouth, and she remembers most of the spells from her last life as him that she discovered while on the run and researching horcruxes, including one that can only be cast by a parselmage that can grant a person a chance to be considered worthy by magic to become a parselmouth.

She succeeds, and together the two of them train to get Harry through the second task.

He asks her to go with him to the ball, and she nearly declines, until he tells her it is only as a friend. She agrees with him telling him he feels more like family than anyone she could ever be romantically interested in, and he heartily agrees.

As a consequence of them going to the ball together, Luna is kidnapped and put at the bottom of the lake as Harry's hostage.

Not expecting it, but still planning for it just in case, she has a fail safe in place, which allows her to wake from her enchanted sleep with enough time to help Gabrielle, who she remembered being horribly ill for months after the task thanks to her Vela heritage.

When Harry arrives with a battered but still soldiering on Fleur in tow, the two of them are playing a game with some of the merchildren in a special pocket of warm water designed to keep Gabrielle at a comfortable temperature, to hopefully prevent her months long illness.

After the task, Luna writes a piece for the Quibbler on merpeople, and ghostwrites an article on the near international incident caused by the people in charge of the tournament by placing a foreign diplomats 8 year old daughter in an incredibly dangerous situation without even bothering to obtain his consent.

The fall out for that one is delicious. She follows it up with a series of articles, admonishing almost every aspect of the tournament, from the selection process, to the security, to the endangerment of protected species, as well as all of the student body, to the fact that nobody could even see what was happening in the second task, not even the organizers.

She manages to secure the diadem and along with a trunk full of goblin forged items she found in the RoR, and a few other treasures besides, she snuck them off to Gringots.

Using the treasures, she hired the goblins to rid the diadem of the horcrux, as well as a few more objects, and funded a research project to remove a horcrux from a sentient living being, preferably sooner rather than later. After they accepted the job, she gave them the trunk of goblin stuff, saying it was their property and she was just returning it.

Her next little jaunt was to the gaunt shack, where she nearly got caught, but managed to get the ring, plant a fake and get away with only minimal curse damage. She took the ring into Gringots to add to the items that needed to be decursed, this one of both the horcrux and the death curse. While there, she learned she had been named goblin friend for the return of their property. She simply replied that she liked having friends, and that she would speak to her father about inviting them to her next unbirthday party.

The hogsmead weekend before the last task, Luna went with Harry to meet Sirius. While there, Luna suggested that maybe instead of living in a cave, it would be better to go get his lordship ring from Gringots, then Sirius could instead live at one of his houses under a fidelis until Harry can get his name cleared.

They sneak off to Gringots again, and while there Sirius accepts his ring, and is offered sanctuary with the goblin healers until he gets his legal problems sorted out. Luna accepts, but tells Sirius to call for his elf kreature. Baffled, Sirius does just that, and then Luna tells him to order the elf to bring him regulus' locket, and then tell Sirius the story of how his brother died.

She hands the locket to the goblins to add to the collection of things to be cleansed, and tells them there is one in the bank as well. They unfortunately cannot take it out of the vault without the vault owners permission, and since she is in Azkaban, the vault is currently under the purview of Lady Malfoy.

Sirius however, has an idea, and as Lord Black, he dissolves Bella's marriage on grounds that Lestrange never provided her with an heir, he then takes purview of the vault and has the cup removed and given to the goblins.

Harry, used to Luna being weird and just knowing things, goes along with it all, but Sirius, being largely more sane than he has any right to be is suspicious of how she knows so much, so pulls her aside and tries to assess what her angle is. She tells him to get better, and once they have him freed she will tell him, because he needs to be strong and ready to take care of Harry before she can tell him anything.

Sirius agrees to go along with it for now.

Before they leave, Luna asks Harry to share a memory with the goblins about what quirrelmort told him at the end of his first year, especially the part about how it was quirrelmort that broke into their bank in summer of 91.

She then made certain to mention that while quirrell might be dead and beyond repercussions, the wraith possessing him wasn't, and not only that, unless it were to possess a wixen body, it did not count as an act of war to collect it for punishment.

Her new friends got to plotting.

Back at Hogwarts, Luna and Harry continued his survival training, Luna making sure to include strategies against all manner of creatures, including acromantula. She also started quizzing him on riddles.

Her final project before the third task was to first befriend and then bond with winky. The poor elf did not deserve to be treated the way it had been by the elder Crouch, and Luna had more than enough magic to sustain a bond even with a half starved elf. She also offered to bond with Dobby, with a contract put in place of course saying he would have all the rights and freedoms of a free elf, but would be able to feed from her magic so as not to die. He bashfully implied that he had spontaneously bonded with Harry so was not starving, but until Harry officially claimed him he could not act as Harry's bonded elf.

Luna brought this to Harry's attention, while also explaining the history of house elves to him. He agreed to bond fully with Dobby if that is what he wanted, and if not, to continue being his friend and feeding him magic as needed, so long as it wouldn't hurt either of them.

Dobby agreed to be fully bonded, and Luna made sure to mention that most people forgot to include house elves in anti magical traveling wards, so if Harry ever needed to escape, all he'd need to do is call for Dobby, and if he could, he would go to him.

Finally, it was the day of the third task. While Harry was going through the maze, Luna was busy infiltrating the graveyard with the help of Harry's invisibility cloak and winky.

Prior to getting the ring a few months back, she'd made a pitstop in the graveyard and replaced the remains of every person buried there with animal bones she'd cleaned out of the chamber of secrets.

Once she found a good position to hide in, she sent winky back to the castle to help release Moody, and also to swap out the polyjuice in jr's flask for something that only tasted like ass instead.

In the graveyard, Harry arrived with Cedric and the portkey, only Luna switched Cedric for a rock transfigured to look like him before he could be hit by the killing curse, and then she summoned the cup back into his hand, sending him back to Hogwarts.

Next she let Harry be taken and tied to the grave stone, watching Peter prepare the ritual.

She let him get as far as dropping in the fake bone of the Father before she stunned the man. She then sent a patronus off to her goblin friend, telling him she had found the wraith that had broken into Gringots.

Within minutes the graveyard was swarming with goblins who took away both the cauldron and Nagini, who had attempted to attack her when she had stunned Peter. Harry, having been untied, reclaimed his wand from Peter and then securely hog tied him, before stuffing him in a trunk Luna provided. She then suggested he ask Dobby to take him directly to the ministry so he could talk to madam bones. He asked if she was coming with, and she just gave him a look and asked him how he was supposed to explain why she was there. He agreed and after giving him back his cloak, she called for winky to take her back to Hogwarts.

Once there, it was pandemonium. Apparently Jr had transformed in front of everyone when he came to investigate Cedric returning, a Cedric who was frantically trying to get people to listen to him that Harry was trapped in some graveyard with a man who had tried to kill him. Dumbledore seemed to be the only person taking him seriously, but wasn't as yet doing anything about it, instead he was watching both Snape and Karkaroff closely, likely for signs of being summoned.

Meanwhile, Moody was looking like death warmed over sitting off to the side, ignoring Poppy while he was guarding over Jr and waiting for aurors to show up.

All in all, chaos. So, a good day all around.

The conclusion of the event was Peter and Jr being put under veritaserum, Sirius being cleared, and immediately taking custody of Harry, despite the protests of Dumbledore. Luna decided to put off her hunt for the crumple horned snorekak for a summer, and worked with Gringots to remove the horcrux safely from Nagini, and once they did, she brought Sirius in to explain the situation to him. Well, at least the part about the horcruxes.

He pressed that they needed to tell Harry, and Luna only half agreed. She explained that if they told him what was happening before hand, it is possible the horcrux could try and fight back, that she hated the idea of not telling Harry and knowing how much he would hate not being told, but she couldn't make that decision herself. She would rather Harry be alive to hate her forever for not telling him than dead but well informed.

In the end the met half way.

They told Harry that in order to put Riddle down for good he would need to participate in a ritual, one that would likely hurt a lot, but that it was the best chance at finally getting the job done.

Harry looked at Luna, and asked if it was the best way. She answered "it's better than the only other way I know" and Harry decided to do it, but only if Luna promised to take Dobby's bond, at least until it is done. She did so.

The ritual took hours, and his recovery took over a month, but once it was over with, he was back to better than before.

Two days after Harry finally recovered from the ritual, Dumbledore called a meeting of the order, he'd reinstated it after the tournament, though so far they had done very little besides question why they were there and talk about setting up a guard rotation in the ministry.

However, the meeting was called because Snape had news. At the meeting he showed off his bare forearm. Dumbledore was trying to argue that Tom had somehow removed the mark from Snape, for his betrayal, and stated that it was proof he was back.

Sirius let everyone argue for a bit before he let out a whistle to get everyone's attention.

"The mark is gone because Voldemort is dead."

"My boy, I assure you, he is very much alive. If you doubt, you need only ask Harry."

"Oh, I did. You know what I also did? I had his obviously still cursed scar checked out by the goblins. They found out that it was a horcrux, and removed it a few weeks ago. I found out yesterday that they were able to track down six more pieces, which they destroyed, something about old moldyshorts breaking into Gringots a few years ago, thus giving them the right to punish him under the treaty of 1612 I think it was? In any case, they executed him last night, they would have done it sooner, but Harry only recovered enough to attend the execution a few days ago, and he requested to be present for it. They sent the death certificate off to the archives to be magically certified, so you should be able to see for yourself in the next few days if you want."

"My boy, this is. Well, I can only say I'm terribly disappointed that you would do something so reckless without even consulting me first."

"Don't you my boy me Albus, you had fourteen years to do it yourself! Instead what did you do? You sent my pup, James and Lilys only son, off to live with muggles that put my own vile mother to shame in how they treated my godson. Tell me, what exactly did you have to gain from placing him in an abusive household? Forcing him to go back year after year despite him begging you not to? Threatening him that if anything we're to happen to his family because he wasn't there to power some non existent blood wards, that he could be held responsible? Oh, no, don't you even start, I had a team of the best ward masters examine Petunias house, and all they found was an over sensitive accidental magic detection ward, and a tracking ward set up to alert someone, I'm guessing you, whether Harry left the property.

So Albus, whatever you have to say, I don't care, be disappointed in me all you like, because honestly, it doesn't mean shit. You can consider this my resignation from the order, and if you Ever come near Harry again, in any capacity, I Will take legal action."

With that, Sirius left. His listening devices stayed though.

Pandemonium ensued, threats, accusations, much yelling. Etc.

Snape quietly slipped away.

Luna decided it was time to ghostwrite a new series of books.

First one to release, just in time for school shopping to start, was the untold story of Albus Dumbledore.

It was a best seller worldwide.

The second one she released under the same nomme de plume, biography of a megalomaniac: the true story of Voldemort. She released it just before winter break and it sold out of its first three printings by the new year.

She released one more the next summer about Grindelwald, which sold out as well.

Meanwhile, her fourth year started, and Umbrige was the new DADA teacher. She lasted a day and a half before she was found in a coma in her office, that no one was able to wake her from.

When her office was searched for any evidence of foul play, several bloodquills were found, as well as a list of students who were muggleborn, had parents working for the ministry, and/or were suspected of carrying creature blood. There was also a detailed plan for installing a muggleborn registry, that would result in having every muggleborn, halfbreed and squib in Britain given the kiss or chucked through the veil, and how she planned to start with the students at Hogwarts after she and the minister got rid of the staff members they did not like. Lastly, there was a copy of a kiss on sight order for Harry Potter, signed by Umbridge and the minister.

She was replaced by a rotating roster of Aurors, and Luna dropped a hint to some puffs about starting a petition to send to the board of governors for them to hire a curse breaker to get rid of the curse on the defense position.

The minister retired from office for "health reasons" and disappeared on his way to a holiday outside of the country. He was replaced by madam Bones until a proper election could be scheduled.

Luna also continued ghostwriting articles for the prophet about the falling standards of Hogwarts, and the rumors about all the dangerous things that have happened there over the last fifty years that were just swept under the rug.

Dumbledore was bombarded daily by howlers.

The rest of the year went by peacefully for her and Harry.

That summer, Harry and Sirius accompanied Luna and her father for a few weeks of camping. Luna returned with them to stay with Harry for the remainder of the holiday while her father trooped off to a different continent in search of a horklump.

The rest of summer hols were filled with spending time with friends and strangely enough, just being a normal teenager, or at least as normal as she was capable of. When Harry's owl results arrived, he was surprised to see hers arrive as well.

"Weren't you a fourth year?

"Yes."

"How did you take your owls then?"

"Much the way you did one can assume."

"Why though?"

"Why not?"

"Fair enough."

Both hers and Harry's results were impressive enough that Sirius decided to take them and all their friends on a trip to France to celebrate. Luna invited winky and her account manager and his family, because they were her only friends, aside from Harry. Her manager declined, stating work. Winky was able to glamour herself while in muggle areas, but the group mostly stuck to the French magical district for the week they spent there.

Harry invited Ron to go with him, and Hermione met them there with her parents.

Harry and Ron had mostly made up after Ron had been a berk in fourth year, though their friendship wasn't nearly so strong as hers had been with her Ron when she was Harry.

Hermione had never split from Harry, though she had also never warmed up to Luna, still finding her too strange, but was willing to over look her strangeness for Harry's sake and make a better attempt at tolerating Luna, especially after Luna had sent research materials Hermione's way about house elves, diverting her attention from attempting to forcibly free them to instead advocating for fair treatment and researching a way house elves could survive without being fed wixen magic.

Consequently, Hermione spent a good deal of their week picking Winkies brain about house elves, and Luna found herself wandering alone for most of it, Sirius Harry and Ron spending most of their time quidditch mad hanging out in the muse de games and attending a special three day training camp while they were there.

While out and about two days into their celebration, Luna was wandering by herself through one of the many book stores, and found herself face to chest with Theodore Nott.

The two of them ended up spending the day together, perusing book stores, and then getting lunch in muggle Paris at a cafe on the Sien.

She joined him again the next day, though this time they were joined by Blaze Zabini.

The three spent her last few days in France shopping, visiting museums and eating their way across both the magical and muggle sides of the city.

Back in London they went book shopping, and Luna was happy to discover she had received the year 6 book list. When she got to school though, she found herself still rooming with year five. That was okay though, since she had long ago decided to keep all of her stuff warded to the nines so it couldn't be stolen from her.

Now that she was attending year six classes though, she was able to spend more time with Harry in class, and Theo and Blaze also started sitting with her in their shared classes. She got a few questioning looks over her being in a different year group but only the usual nargles tried to start an infestation, which she was able to deal with quite handily.

Dumbledore tried to pull Harry into "special training" again, but Luna wrote to Sirius, who had Dumbledore slapped with a magical restraining order after sending evidence of his malicious neglect of Harry.

Harry was named quidditch Captain, and Ginny joined the team, the two of them started dating after the first game of the season. Hermione pulled Luna aside afterwards.

"Are you okay Luna?

"Yes. Why do you ask?"

"Well, it's only that, I thought you and Harry were together. You know, dating?"

"You have a very strange mind Hermione. Me and Harry dating, why, it would be like Gred and Forge dating. Just plain weird."

"Yeah, okay. Whatever you say Luna."

Theo started spending more time with Luna after that, which was very nice of him, since Harry was all twitterpated and spending all of his free time with Ginny. Ron was dating Lavender now too, so Hermione started spending more time with Luna as well, though her and Blaze often would get in debates over the silliest of things. Luna and Theo would just leave them to it and read quietly together until their companions were less quarrelsome.

The first Hogsmeade trip after winter hols she spent with mostly Theo, perusing the shops first, then having a picnic while the weather briefly allowed for it. Theo had asked if Luna had wanted to go to madam puddifoots, but Luna declined, saying their tea cakes were too dry and their pudding never tasted right.

Luna took pudding Very seriously.

So Theo had instead ordered food to go from the three broomsticks and they found a nice quiet spot next to a pond to eat at. When it got colder, Theo had even offered her a cuddle, and before they left to go back to the castle, Theo caught Luna in a kiss, and as their lips met, Luna Saw her new future for the first time.

"Our daughter will be named Allana Pandora for both our mother's. You can name her twin brother. Also, I would prefer an autumn wedding, I do so love the colors of fall, but we can wait until you finish your first mastery, I know how much work you have put into getting your apprenticeship, and Master Helman would be quite put out should you delay more than the two weeks you will need next summer after we graduate."

Theo looked wide eyed at Luna for a few moments, before.

"I've always liked the name Gremory. And a fall wedding suits me just fine. Would you like my grandfather to contact your father for a betrothal contract?

No need, father is in Canada hunting tweedlebarks, and I've been head of the family since I was ten anyway."

Blaze teased Theo for the rest of his life over the whole thing.

They finished the year, Harry and Ginny still glued at the lips, and Luna wished them well. Hopefully without the war the two of them stood a chance to be happy together.

Ron and Lavender had broken up for the third time, but promptly got back together when Lavender spotted Victor waiting for Hermione as the train pulled into the station.

Blaze joined the two of them with his mother and the entire group left to the muggle side of the station to meet Hermione's parents.

Sirius spotted Theo leading Luna to his grandfather, and nearly had a conniption when he saw the courtship bracelets her and Theo wore. He then inserted himself into the role of guardian and chaperone, since Lunas father was in Africa until the end of July.

Summer passed, and led to seventh year, Dumbledore had been booted out as headmaster by the board, and had retired to his country cottage. Snape agreed to stay on one more year for the board to find a replacement for his classes and as head of Slytherin. McGonagall was made headmistress, and professor vector named deputy.

Seventh year passed, and newts were sat. Theo got his apprenticeship, but had to delay it two weeks when his grandfather fell ill and then died, leaving Theo as head of the family with his father still serving time in Azkaban.

Harry accepted a spot as seeker for the tunsthill tornadoes, and Ron went into the aurors program. He and lavender got married a month after graduation, and their first child was born mid-November.

Hermione decided to study law, and Blaze joined her. The two of them eventually opened their own law firm Granger, Zabini and Krum, which specialized in muggle, magical and international law.

Luna took over the Quibbler, doing most of the writing for her father that traveled. She sometimes traveled with him, but only a few times a year. She continued ghostwriting books about infamous influential political figures. Her next book after Grindelwald was about fudge and umbridge. And after that was about Salazar Slytherin, based on the diaries she had found in the chamber of secrets.

Her and Theo married in autumn of 2004 and their first children were born two years later, only a week before Harry and Ginny's first child, Lily Luna.

Life moved on.
