Teardrops On My Guitar
"Wakey, wakey, it's time for school!!!” Those words were the first ones Lily had heard that morning. It didn't take Lily any time to recognize Marlene’s voice.
Marlene had always been more of an evening person, but especially today, she had woken up earlier than Lily. Today was special for both Lily and Marlene, so Lily was not really surprised.
Lily opened her eyes slowly as she stared at the blonde girl. “You should touch some grass.” Her green eyes looked serious, but her smile exposed her sarcasm. Marlene lifted her long finger as she
Even though Lily was really happy about Marlene coming back to Toronto, it also meant that the house would be louder, and Lily was absolutely okay with that. She had missed Marlene. The red-haired girl wished she could come with Marlene to visit her brother, but she didn’t really have time because of all the interviews and practicing for their upcoming game. Even though Marlene was on the team too, Minnie had let her go visit her brother.
Today was a big day for both of them. Marlene was going to introduce her mysterious girlfriend for the first time to Lily, just as she had promised. Also, Lily was really protective over Marlene, especially since what happened between her and her ex-partner. Her green eyes could not forget how hurt Marlene’s eyes were when she found out they cheated on her.
Marlene patted Lily’s tangled hair as she started to look through the red-haired girl’s wardrobe. “Take a shower quick! She’s coming over for breakfast!” Marlene yelled, still looking through Lily’s wardrobe, while Lily’s pupils dilated, exploding like a dark pool inside her green eyes.
Lily walked quickly over to the bathroom she had right next to her wardrobe as she started talking fast. “I thought she was coming over for dinner! Why didn’t you tell me earlier she’s coming over for breakfast!?” Lily cried out as she started to undress in the bathroom, getting ready for a quick shower.
Lily heard Marlene’s gushy laugh while she felt the hot water falling through her body. Lily usually would stand in the shower for a long time—or at least that’s what Marlene says—but she did not have time for that right now. She had to be as quick as possible.

Lily flipped another pancake as Marlene started to cut strawberries and bananas. “I hope she likes pancakes,” Lily whispered as she continued to sing the song in the background. Even though Lily was Canadian, she still loved Taylor Swift’s country music. “He’s the reason for the teardrops on my guitar,” she sang. Marlene continued, “The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star." Marlene didn’t really listen to Taylor Swift; she was more of a Korn person. But she lived with Lily; of course, she knew almost every single Taylor Swift song.
“Do you need any help?” Marlene asked Lily while she was putting the small strawberries and bananas on the little plate. Lily shook her head as she continued to put the batter on the hot pan to make the last pancake.
The blonde girl heard a knock on the door as she was about to sit on the chair inside of hers and Lily’s little kitchen. “She’s here!” Marlene said, making the sentence longer, as if she were singing.
Lily’s green eyes threw a nervous look at her best friend as she was walking to the door. She put the last pancake on the plate and placed it in the middle of the kitchen table. When Lily was walking to the door to welcome Marlene’s girlfriend, she saw a really similar face.
“Dorcas?” Lily was quite confused to see her close friend in the hallway. It was supposed to be Marlene’s girlfriend who was here, not Marlene’s nemesis. Marlene and Dorcas have hated each other since kindergarten!
Dorcas’ lips, which were filled with red lipstick, had curled up as she greeted Lily. ”Hey Lils!” She said as Marlene took her fur coat. This was the first time she ever saw them get along without cursing or hating each other.
“So you’ve finally met my'mysterious' girlfriend, Lils." Marlene said slowly, with a smile, as the taller girl kissed her cheek. The couple started walking to the kitchen, as Lily was still extremely confused.
“Oh my God, I love pancakes!” Dorcas explained as Marlene helped her sit. Lily sat in front of them as she still stared weirdly at them.
“Since when do you two get along?” She asked as Dorcas and Marlene were already eating their pancakes.
“Well… Since Dorcas made our clothes for all stars,” Marlene mumbled, her mouth full of strawberries. Lily thought about the last time they were at All Stars. It was about a year ago, and Marlene was right; Dorcas had made Team Evans’ jerseys.
She still didn’t understand how they got along at All Star. They were not arguing like they did when they were younger, of course, but she never thought they would be that close. “Well, that explains a lot, I guess. But this is so weird!” She cried as Dorcas and Marlene laughed. It was obvious Lily expected everyone, but not Dorcas.
“So, how’s it going with the NHL sun?” Marlene asked Lily to start a conversation. Lily never liked just eating at the table; it was too boring, in her opinion. So Marlene had decided to talk about the ‘NHL sun’. The blonde girl had given this nickname to Potter back in 2020, when he posted a picture of the sun and wrote ‘we miss seeing the sun (me)‘ on the caption.
Lily slightly blushed, but of course, she was not going to let the couple see this embarrassing moment, so she took her glass of milk, which covered her face. After taking a big sip and making sure her cheeks were back to normal, she spoke. “He’s taking me out tomorrow, actually." Lily spoke slowly. She saw Dorcas smirking when she saw Marlene’s shocked expression.
“Tomorrow?!” She asked. It was obvious she was not expecting it to be that early.
Lily shook her head and took another slice from her pancake, making eye contact with Dorcas and laughing softly at Marlene, still extremely shocked.
Their breakfast went smoothly, talking about how Marlene and Dorcas got together, Marlene bullying Lily because of James, and them planning where they should travel for the summer.
