I’m only strong for you
Evan’s POV
As he walked into the hospital wing Evan froze in fear. Barty was laying on his side, his body far stiller than normal. Rushing over Evan placed two fingers to the pulse point in the comatose boy’s throat desperately willing himself to find a pulse, for this to be a joke.
Holding his breath in concentration and concern Evan readjusted his hand several times until he finally felt the pitiful beating of his boyfriend’s heart. So weak he had almost missed it.
‘Barty? Hey… Bar?!’ Shaking the limp form of the boy on the bed he felt his panic rise. ‘Barty love come on, stop fucking messing with me… please’ the last word shattered as it fell from his lips. Holding back tears Evan pulled himself together. ‘Help! Somebody, anybody! Please help me!’
Adrenaline taking over he pulled Barty up to a sitting position and leant him over one of his arm’s, cheek resting against Evan’s side. ‘ Bar … I know you’re going to really hate me for this but I need to make you sick… need to get out whatever you took’ the bottle that previously contained the sleeping pills was knocked over on the bedside table with no indication of what had been inside.
With Barty settled over his arm, Evan took out his wand and silently cast some charms to force the other boy to clear his system. Muttering as he worked Evan wasn’t sure if it was more for his boyfriend or himself. ‘Just a bit more angel come on… I know I know… it’s okay, it’ll be okay…’
Propping the other up against the headboard Evan checked again for a pulse. ‘Come on love, please…’ breathing deep to steady his own mind Evan shouted louder ‘I need some help here! Anybody, I need help… NOW!’
His hands were shaking as he gently straightened Barty’s head. Bloodied bubbles were collecting at the corners of his mouth, his eyes heavy and closed.
He was barely breathing but his body was trying to fight.
Suddenly fast footsteps echoed off the walls outside the hospital wing and then the doors slammed open to reveal the matron with a timid looking first year student.
‘Move. Now.’ Pushing Evan away from the bed she began a frantic vigil over the unconscious boy laying there.
Evan backed up against the wall blinking slowly as he watched the matron try to stabilise Barty. The minutes ticked by slowly feeling more like hours. At some point Regulus joined him and Evan wordlessly held him close as he sobbed into his chest. The world was spinning wildly around him as he slid down to sit on the floor.
‘Reggie? Hey he’s going to be fine… he’s breathing he’ll pull through.’ Gently stroking a hand through Regulus’ hair he sighed heavily and tilted his head back against the wall.
One week. One week they had been told to remain away so he could recover in peace. There had been some bullshit about NDAs and wordings to use in public but after a week they were supposed to be able to go back to their missing piece.
A week had become two. Two had slipped into three and they still hadn’t been allowed to visit. One late night attempt had nearly landed Evan with a needle through his eye as the warding charm had booted him backward. He was clueless to what had been different today but he thanked whatever deity had been paying attention for the wards' lapse in functionality.
After what felt like hours the matron stepped back from Barty who had been positioned to lay on his back, his chest softly rising and falling.
‘You two may remain for now but come morning you will have to leave’
‘No.’ Evan squared up his shoulders and gently rested a sleeping Regulus against the wall so he wouldn’t fall.
The matron eyed him with annoyance. ‘Mr Rosier. Neither of us gets a choice in the matter. I am under oath to allow him no visi-‘
‘And look where that got us! We won’t be leaving until he does.’ Evan stood to his full height stepping between her and the boy on the bed. ‘It’s pretty damn clear to me that he needs us. I’m not going anywhere unless you’re going to physically force me out. He nearly died today… a-and as much as I don’t want to think about it, it's my fault. I promised him he would never have to be alone and that the three of us would always have each other but now look. The first sign of trouble and we gave up trying to get in. I’m not leaving. Got it?!’
‘I will inform the headmaster of this.. situation, come morning and he can decide his course of action from there.’
‘Fine.’ Watching her leave Evan carefully lifted Regulus onto the bed next to Barty pressing a gentle kiss to the latter’s head before settling into the seat at the bedside and letting himself drift off to sleep.
