Maybe she shouldn't have gotten involved. But fuck that James is her best friend and she hated seeing him so hurt. James is a sensitive soul, always solving other people's problems and ignoring him own. He also would never say anything negative about anyone, ever even if he absolutely ( and rightly so ) dislikes them. Marlene and James have been friends since they could talk, growing up basically next door to each other Marls lived in the Potter house most of her childhood. So she knew James, and she knew how much Lily ans Regulus' relationship was effecting him. She would obviously never get in the way of a relationship, love is love and all but she could ask them to tone it down near James.
She walks up to where Lily and Reg are sitting, just off the shore of the lake. "Marls!" Lily squeals, jumping up to give her a hug. "Marlene" Regulus acknowledges. "What the fuck is this thing between you two?" Marlene asks as she breaks away from Lily. "Can we pleaseee tell her?" Lily pleads to Regulus, who just absently nods, still reading his book. "Yay! So basically Reg has this massive crush on James and James still likes me so we're pretending to date so that James gets over me and notices Reg!" Lily rushes out. Marlene's first reaction is to laugh, James still like Lily? It's laughable. Her second reaction though is, "that makes absolutely no fucking sense...how-" she responds. "you don't need to understand, we've got this all figured out" Regulus assures. Now Marlene doesn't doubt the Lily Evans ans Regulus Black had made so form of a plan, she just worries that they haven't factored in the most important part.

They've been doing this for nearly two months. All they've succeeded in doing is James avoiding them both. Maybe they aren't convincing enough? James has stopped staring at Lily though, so it has to be working.
It's Wednesday, which means it's their weekly study session in the library. Almost everyone except Sirius and James know that Lily and Regulus aren't actually together. James for obvious reasons and Sirius because he wouldn't be able to keep it a secret from James. Remus wasn't too impressed when he found out. Which is maybe why he hasn't arrived at the study session. He's probably with Sirius anyway.
Lily and Regulus have mostly stuck to holding hands and sneaking away together, so they've decided maybe more pda would make it more believable. Regulus starts to look up from his astronomy text book, mostly to see if Remus had decided to join when he sees James enter the library. James starts to look their way and Regulus, automatically moves to Lily and kisses her, Lily is confused at first but Regulus whispers James in a small breath and Lily immediately understands. When they break and turn to look where James was, he is no where to be seen.
