The first day of classes

Scorpius woke up refreshed and ready for his first day. Then his smile faded. What if Rose, Al and Alice didn’t want to be his friends anymore? How would his family react to his hypothetical friends? What if their families don’t approve? So many ‘what-ifs’ went through his head when Al woke up.
“Mo’ning, Scorp,” Al said sleepily. “How’d ya sleep?”
“Good.” Scorpius came back to the real world. “You?”
“Same.” Al froze. “Wait… What if my family hates me now?”
He started to panic. Al was in Slytherin. A Potter in Slytherin? Everyone will hate him! The whispers, the articles! What if Rose, his almost-twin, didn’t want to talk to him anymore? What if Alice, his closest friend outside the family, hated him? What if James, his brother, spat slurs at him? WHAT IF HIS PARENTS DISOWNED HIM! He would’ve continued if Scorpius didn’t appear right next to him.
“Al, come on!” He said. “I don’t think it’s possible for your family to hate you even if you murder someone, especially Rose and Alice.”
Al did cool down. For some reason, he felt like he’d believe everything Scorpius said. They got dressed and went to breakfast.
They sat at the end of the Slytherin table, not expecting two certain Griffindors to join them.
“Good morning!” Rose greeted very enthusiastically. “How did you boys sleep?”
“Ro and I have very nice dorm mates!” Alice joined. “What about you?”
“You are still talking to me?” Al said surprised.
“Why wouldn’t we?” Rose replied confused.
“Yeah, you’re still our Al, no matter the house!”
“You too, Scorp, you’re one of us now!”
Saying this made him feel so much better. He had friends now! He smiled at them.
Professor Longbottom approached them.
“Already at a different table? It’s your first day!” He shook his head.
“You know us, da- professor.” Alice smiled when she corrected herself. Her father smiled back at her. He gave her and Rose their schedules and walked off to the Griffindor table.
“What is your first class?” Al asked.
“Charms” all three of them said.
“Great!” He exclaimed. “We’ll be in the same class!”
After breakfast, they went to their first class. The girls sat on the second row, the boys behind them. The class went smoothly, Rose and Scorpius got the Leviosa charm from the first try, Alice – the third, Al didn’t manage to lift the feather at all.
They didn’t have more classes together that day, but they sat together at lunch, this time with the Griffindors. Scorpius met the rest of the Weasley-Potter-Longbottom clan, including Victoire, who was in Ravenclaw. Strangely enough, they accepted him with open arms. He couldn’t have been more grateful for that.
The four of them had a free period before their afternoon classes, which they decided to spend together under the tree next to the Black lake. It turned out all of them were procrastinators and they refused to do the homework they already had. That’s how they found themselves like that – Rose on a branch on the tree, Al and Scorp sitting under it and Alice laying with her head on Albus’ lap. She was a cuddly person and they knew each other since birth, so it wasn’t weird.
Somewhere during the conversation they heard a click. There was a boy with a camera, probably a third year, and once he realized he’d been caught, he ran away.
“What was that?” Scorpius asked panicked.
“Just the Hogwarts’ newspaper,” Alice answered. “Teddy invented it. They follow students around and take pictures and write article of them. When you point at your copy and say ‘gossip’, the articles turn into not so legal ones, like the muggle black market.”
“Yeah, and one copy is a knut. I think they are taking people from every house and every year, for the biggest amount of gossip.” Rose made a face. “There will be an article about us tomorrow, probably. We are quite a sight.”
“Do you think they’d take me?” Scorp asked.
“Probably, seeing you’re close to us,” Al said. “I assume they’ll want more information about us, considering James made, like, half the articles last year.” He laughed.
“There must be a poster about requiting in every common room,” Alice said.
Rose’s eyes got a weird sparkle.
“Actually,” she started, “it would be nice to have an inner person in the newspaper team! You might stop bad articles!”
“Why, you think they’ll write something bad about you?” Alice joked.
The playfulness in Rose’s eyes turned into horror.
“Mum is most likely becoming the next Minister of Magic. I have to be careful with the media, no matter if it’s just the school’s newspaper. I don’t even want to imagine her reaction to a bad article about me…”

Before they knew it, it was time for History of magic, which all four had together. It was so boring, even Rose almost fell asleep. Classes went by and it was time for dinner. They had decided to eat on the Griffindor table and it was even better than lunchtime. The Silver Marauders, James, Fred, Roxanne and Dominique, already played a prank on Filtch.
They all went to their respective common rooms and started doing their homework. Rose finished fast and helped Alice, meanwhile in the Slytherin common room both boys studied ‘til midnight. Then, they all sent letters to their families before they went to bed.

Dear Mum and Dad,
My first day of classes just ended, so I’m writing to inform you a few of things. First, I got sorted in Slythern and share a dorm room with Albus Potter (I was surprised, too!), Ashton Thomas-Finnigan, Colleen Creevey II and Jack. Secondly, I made three new friends on the train! They are Albus, Alice Longbottom and Rose Granger-Weasley. Surprisingly, they were the only first years to let me sit in their compartment, and we spent the whole day together! They said I’m one of them now! Also, I was thinking about trying for the school’s newspaper. They requite students for all houses and all years, for the biggest amount of gossip. They saw me with my new friends today, and we think they requite me for information of them. Even though I don’t want to write about them, but I can use it as a chance! Anyways, I’m going to bed now, so goodnight!
Love,
Scorpius

Dear Mum,
Dad probably already told you I got sorted in Griffindor! I also made a new friend, Scorpius Malfoy, he is our fourth member of the group now! By ‘we’, I mean Al, Ro and me. I’ll be off to bed now, so goodnight!
Love,
Alice

Dear Mum, Dad and Lily,
I got sorted in Slytherin. The others said they aren’t surprised though! I also made a new friend, Scorpius. Ali and Ro sat with us the whole day! I really like my dorm mates, one of them is Ashton. I’m very tired, it’s literally midnight, so bye!
Love,
Al

Dear Mum, Dad and Hugo,
I got sorted in Griffindor! Al, though, is in Slytherin, but Ali and I still spent the whole day with him and our new friend, Scorpius, who is one of Al’s dorm mates, we met him on the train! Anyways, we had a lot of homework and I finished it all, so I’m going to bed. Goodnight!
Love,
Rose
