Chapter 1
Her eyes. He couldn't help but get lost in them. They were just so beautiful yet so deadly, like pools of deadly emerald green gems.
Β
Just one touch is all he wanted. He would die happily if he could just have her for a moment. If only he could run his hands through her beautiful red hair. Oh my gosh, her red hair-
Β
And just like that, he was jabbed out of his daydream by Sirius' elbow in his ribs. "Mate, you are staring again. You're gonna scare her off. It's not like you haven't messed up enough." James just rolled his eyes. He's not entirely wrong. Lily caught him bullying Snape, her ex best friend. But he deserved it! He was a terrible person. Not just to him but to everyone when Lily wasn't looking.
Β
James wanted to embarrass him so he might or might not have hung him from his feet in the air. He eventually let him down when Lily told him, too. Not for Snivillus but for his Lilypad. Then that no-good greasy snake called her a mudblood. James could have killed him on the spot, but Lily yelled at James and Severus before he could.
Β
That was last year. James and Lily were now in their last year of Hogwarts, and James had one last chance to make Lily his. He spent all summer having his mom and dad help him become more mature. To say the least, he is. As much as it kills him, James made a promise to himself. He wasn't gonna harass her with pleas for dates. He was just gonna be nice, like a friend. Now, is that gonna stop him from staring? Absolutely not.
Β
"Well, Sirius, I can't help it. Though im going to reel it back on asking her out." Sirius and Remus gave each other a look that said 'this isn't gonna last'. "Well, James, if that's what you want-" "It's absolutely not what I want, but I'm not gonna lose her permanently, so let's just see where it goes. I'll just be her friend, though that pains me."
Β
Remus nodded, amused. "Alright then." Sirius hummed in agreement with Moony only to cause him to choke. He had shoveled food down his throat like a dog. James rolled his eyes at Sirius and went back to looking at Lily just to find her already looking at him.
Β
His heart jumped. No, it dived into his stomach. He didn't show it, but James was freaking out. He smiled kindly at her, and she cocked her head to the side, studying him for a second before smiling back at him. Lily turned away, and James practically died on Peters shoulder. "I'm not gonna survive this year..." Peter chuckled and put his arm around his friend, patting his arm in a friendly way.
Β
"You'll be fine, mate. Now eat dinner before you have to go to head duties." Moony smirked and looked down at his plate. "Yeah, alright... Who was the head girl?" "You didn't get the letter?" Wormtail raised brow as James sat up straight. "No, that dumb dog got it first, then ate it. He wouldn't tell me who." Sirius laughed like a mad man.
Β
"You should have seen his face." Remus shook his head. "Well, Prongs, you'll see when you get to dumbledors office." James pouted and started to eat. Well tried to, padfoot was giggling like a school girl across the table, causing him to throw a roll at him. "OI!" "Stop being a prick."
Β
After dinner, he said bye to the boys and headed to the headmasters office. When James arrived at the statue, he realized he didn't know the password. "Damn it, padfoot." He muttered. "Why are we daming Sirius?" A voice said from behind, causing him to jump like a kangaroo.
Β
James spun around to find his emerald eyed redhead. "I- Lily.. what are you doing here?" She cocked her head with a straight face. "Im headgirl. Didn't you read the letter?"
Β
He shook his head and blushed from embarrassment. "No actually Pad- Sirius got to it first. He read it and then ate- destroyed it. I had no clue whoΒ the head girl was.. or what the password is." Lily smirked softly "Well it's yours truly, and the password is honey biscuits."Β James nodded and turned back around. "Honey biscuits." The statue spun and stairs appeared.
Β
"Thanks, Lily." She furrowed her brows and nodded. "Yeah, of course." They both headed up the stairs. "So.." She said quietly. James looked down at her. Lily was so short. It was cute to him. "Look, Lils, I'm actually gonna try. I don't want you to feel like you have to do everything. I know we didn't end things on a good note last year, but I've changed. Truly."
Β
Lily looked up at him, studying him, which she does quite a lot. She nodded and looked back at the stairs. "Well, I'm glad you said that. Because I would have kicked your butt if you left me with all the work." James smirked. "The night is young. Knowing us, I'll probably do something stupid, and you'll put me in my place."
Β
Lily grinned with a laugh. "You're not wrong. I probably will." She looked up at him once again. Right in his eyes. James' heart stopped for a second time.
Β
He smiled down at her as they reached the door. Lily knocked while James regrouped and cleared his mind of every thought, telling him to kiss her or ask her out. The door opened slightly, and Lily pushed it open wider. "After you romeo." He lifted his eyebrow. "What an insult. I look way better than Romeo ever has."
Β
She rolled her eyes and walked in. James could've sworn he saw her smirk. It might have been a trick of the eye though. He followed her in and closed the door.
Β
"Welcome, children. As you know, I have chosen you as the head boy and girl of Hogwarts. It's a big responsibility but it's a bigger deal that you are from the same house. This hasn't happened in almost 200 years. Now, as I'm sure you'll manage in your new roles, I'm going to refresh your minds on what your jobs are." Dumbledors' eyes twinkled as he talked. That always freaked James out.
Β
"The head boy and head girl are responsible for representing the school at events and will make public speeches. You also serve as a role model for students and may share pupils' ideas with the school's leadership. You may also be expected to lead fellow prefects in their duties. You will be the ones they check into every night. There may even be nights where you take their duties if you'd like to give them all a break. You will have a joint office that will be located at the end of the Gryffindor corridor behind the picture of Godric Gryffindor. You also will have private dorms which will be located behind the door in your office. It leads to a private common room and the then private dorms. Ms. Evans on the right. Mr. Potter on the left." Now that's what I'm talking about. James thought. The boys are so gonna love this.
Β
"You will attend classes normally. Except you will have two free periods. One is for whatever you'd like, and the other is for your head duties. You have a welcome to Hogwarts party to throw in 3 weeks, the halloween dance on the 31st, and the christmas ball during the new year. The school will provide funds, but you are required to do everything else." He looked over his half-moon glasses at them, then at the clock. "It's late. Tell your friends where you'll be so they aren't worried than go to your personal dorms. Good night."
Β
Without another word, James and Lily stood up and walked out the room and headed to Gryffindor Tower in complete silence. He kept stealing glances at her. He wanted to say something, but he didn't want her to think he was trying too hard. So for the next 30 minutes they said nothing, until they arrived at the portrait of the fat lady.
Β
"Gillyweed" It swung open, and the two entered. No one was in the common room except for the five people on the couch. Remus was reading, Peter had his head on Remus' shoulder, Sirius was laid across them both, Marlene sat sideways in the armchair hanging upside down, and Mary was painting her nails. They all looked over at James and Lily when we walked through the door. "Lily!" Marlene said and got up, pulling Lils into a hug. "Hey Marls!" She hugged her back then went over to Mary sitting next to her.
Β
"We can't stay long. We have to get to our dorms." James said as he sat down at the end of the couch on Sirius's legs. "Oi!" He exclaimed and glared at him. James just smiled mockingly at him. "What do you mean? Your dorm is with us?" Peter furrowed his brows. "No. We have private dorms in the heads office." Lily said. Her voice was so sweet. It sounded like wind on a hot summer day.
Β
Sirius smirked and sat up, starting to open his mouth. "Separate dorms, you dimwitt." James said quickly before Sirius could say something stupid. "I am not a dimwitt." "Are two." "Am no-" "Okay! You two stop before I get the spray bottle." Remus said, causing Sirius to pout and Peter to chuckle.
Β
The girls, Mary and Marlene, snickered quietly. Lily kept a straight face, but her eyes held a mischievous gleam. "Okay, as much as I love sitting around and listening to Dumb and Dumber aruge, we should all head to bed. We have classes in the morning. Don't you dare whine, Black." Lily cut her eyes at Sirius as he started to open his mouth. "Fine. But just know I don't like this new head, Lily. She's no fun. Not that you've ever been fun." He jabbed playfully. Lily rolled her eyes and stood up. "Off to bed, you five."
Β
Everyone stood up like Lily was their mom and went off to bed. You did not want to irritate her. Though that was fun to do in James' opinion.
Β
"Come on, Romeo, let's get to our dorms." Lily said quietly when everyone was gone. James loved when she was nice to him. It was a great feeling to have a conversation with her where she wasn't yelling. He hoped she would fall in love with him. Because he didn't want this to end.
Β
James dont know what he'd do if they graduated and she wasn't his. How would he live? He wouldn't. Exactly. She is the reason he lived, and she's the only reason he wants to be better.
Β
As they walked to their dorms, it was quiet again. It was comfortable and open. Nothing was forced, and it was a natural understanding of one another. It was so peaceful. As they reached their dorms, they bid goodnight, and that was that.
Β
When James entered his room, he flopped down on his bed and died. His heart was so full. He didn't know how to react. James just spent the entire evening with Lily, and she didn't yell at him once! She smiled and laughed at HIS jokes. I'm hooked now, he thought. All James wanted to do was ask her out, but things were so good he wasn't gonna mess up now.
