Chapter 2
James woke up at 5 am that morning. Not that he wanted to, but he had to, he needed to get back into the habit for Quidditch. So he walked down the stairs and into the common room. James thought the quiet was nice. Usually, Remus would sit with him in the mornings, which isn't really an option anymore. This made James frown while he walked to the corner of the room to make a pot of coffee. He didn't realize how much he would miss the boys.
James sighed and poured a cup of coffee, walking over to the armchair, picking up the daily profit off the table. Nothing new, death eaters were still lurking about, owl flu was taking its toll, I'll need to check on Aurora, James thought to himself. He turned the page and started to read about the quidditch stats. Alexander scored 170 out of 190 points for the Ballycastle Bats their last game, they didn't win, though. The Holyhead Harpies scored 297 points and caught the snitch. James wasn't a big fan of either team but when it came down to it, he'd always support the Harpies.
He kept reading until he was interrupted by a huff next to him. When he looked over, he saw Lily, who had just flopped down on the couch. He smiled and looked at her for a moment. She was so beautiful, even though she was so sleepy. James wouldn't have said anything to her, but her shirt lifted, and he could see her underwear. They were hot pink and said Sunday on them
James blushed and looked away quickly. He composed himself so she could tell he was flustered. "As much as I love the view of your Sunday underwear, I think you should cover up Lils." Lily sat up and whipped her head around to James. She turned redder than her hair, her eyes drifting down to James' chest. He furrowed his brows and looked down.
He was in a gray fitted shirt and plaid PJ pants. He shook his head, thinking he was just imagining her looking down at his chest. Lily just kept looking at him, completely lost for words. She was so red that he felt bad for her.
James stood up and walked over to her. He put his hand on her shoulder. "Come on, it's okay, Lils. It's an honest mistake. I could have just as easily walked down here in my boxers." James said this to try to lighten the mood. Maybe get her to crack a smile. "I wish.." Lily muttered. James went red like Lily. What- did she just- am i- does she- He was at a loss for words. Lily's eyes went wide when she realized what she said. She stood up and went straight back to her dorm.
James stood there in complete shock. Lily Evans. HIS Lilyflower just said she wished he was in his boxers.. There could be no way. He had to have heard her wrong. But the more he thought about it, the more he blushed. James turned around and walked back over to the coffee pot and poured a cup for Lily. He walked back to the table and sat it down on a coaster. James couldn't help but smirk when he picked his cup up, bringing it to his lips. The girl he had been in love with for six years thought about him in his boxers.
After a few minutes, Lily came back down, not making eye contact with James. "I made you a cup of coffee." James gesture to the cup on the table. Lily looked at the cup, the finally at him, and smiled kindly. "Thank you." She said quietly as she sat down, picking up the cup. They just sat there in silence for a while. It made James a little uncomfortable, like something needed to be said, but it was being held back. So he broke the silence. "Look, Lily. It's seriously fine. I can forget everything that happened and not talk about it. The last thing I want is for you to be weird around me, especially since we just became friends." James looked over at the redhead on the couch.
Lily looked at him, a soft pink on her cheeks appearing. "Thank you, James... I'm so sorry. I seriously didn't mean to be such a.. I don't know. I just didn't mean for any of that to happen." You could practically hear the embarrassment and guilt in her voice as she lowered her eyes. "It's seriously okay. I've already forgotten what happened." James smiled softly. Lily looked at him from under her lashes. "Really?" "Mhm, what are you even talking about? This is the first time I've seen you today." Lily smiled at him gratefully.
"So what are you doing awake at 5 am on a Monday?" Lily said, sipped her coffee and crossed her legs on the couch. James sat his now empty cup down and leaned into the chair, pulling on leg up. "Just needed to start getting back into the habit for Quidditch." Lily nodded. "Right. You're also the captain for the Gryffindor team." James smiled at the mention of the team. "I am.. What are you doing awake?" He laid his head to the side to get a better look at her.
She was still wearing the same shirt from earlier. Sex Pistols. That was one of Sirius' favorite bands. Geez, he could get annoying, singing God save the Queen. Lily also had on a pair of pink shorts and white socks that had strawberries on them. "I usually wake up around 5am. I like getting some reading before I get ready to go to breakfast. Plus, it's always quietest. Last year, I'd just read in my room, but I figured since we have our own common room, I'd just come down here... I just kinda forgot you existed in the same space."
James gasped mockingly and put his hand over his heart. "Wow, and here I was thinking you actually thought about me." Lily smirked. "Never in a million year Potter." "That is not what you said earlier Miss. I wish." Lily went red and groaned. "I thought you said you'd forget about that." James shrugged. "And I will.... but not when it's just us. Of course I'm gonna tease you Lily pad." Lily sighed in acceptance. 'Fine, but I swear Potter, if Black or Remus or Peter ever finds out-" "I know, I know, you'll kick my butt." Lily nodded and drank more of her coffee. James bit his lip as he sat in his chair.
"Hey Lils.. Do you wanna come with me to check on Rora?" Lily Raised a brow. "Rora? Finally got a girlfriend do you?" James raised his brow, he could hear the jealousy in her voice. "She's my owl. Her name is Aurora. You have nothing to worry about Lily, you'll always be my number one girl." Lily rolled her eyes and threw a pillow at him, but even she could help but smile.
"Oh hush it." James smiled. SHE DIDN'T YELL AT ME!!! A win is a win. James stood up and held his hand out for her. "Come on. Go get your shoes. I'll meet you at the door." Lily looked up at him, then at his hand. She considered it for a moment then took his hand. "Fine. I'll be back in a moment." James nodded and watched her walk to her dorm.
After she entered, he basically ran to his dorm and put his shoes on, grabbing his jumper, and then ran back down. He leaned against the wall waiting for her. After about a minute Lily appeared next to him. "Shall we?" She asked, putting her hand out. James smiled and took her hand. "We shall." He pulled her out of the portrait. Lily never let go of his hand, and James never let go of hers. In fact he was soaking up the fact that she willingly held his hand. They walked in peace and quiet all the way to the owlery.
When they entered James called for Aurora with a whistle. A snowy owl flew down from the top of the building and landed on James' shoulder. She had green and blue eyes. Lily smiled at the owl. "James, she's beautiful." Aurora hooted in response. James grinned. "That's a thank you from her. She's the sweetest owl. My mom bought her for me a few years ago. I named her Aurora because of her eyes and my mom loves the aurora borealis."
His eyes light up at the thought of his mom. Aurora tucked her head into James' neck, causing him to lay his head on the bird's head. "That's beautiful James.. it sounds like you really love your mom." Lily smiled sadly. "I do. She's an amazing woman, I think she'd love you."
Lily blushed. "Oh I don't know.." James looked down at her, then at their hands. He squeezed her hand. "What's your mom like?" Lily bit her lip and squeezed his hand back, before letting go and walking over to the window seal. "Uhh my parents died during the summer." James looked at the back of her head and frowned.
"Oh.. Lily, I'm so sorry. Don't you have a sister? How's she taking it?" James walked over to Lily and leaned against the cement window seal. "Oh she doesn't like me. She stopped considering me her sister, when I was 11.. When I found out I was a witch." James' heart broke so much for the girl next to him. "That's terrible. You can't control being a witch." Lily wiped a tear that fell and looked over at him.
"I know. That doesnt mean Petunia understood though. She wanted me to stop coming to Hogwarts and be 'normal'. When I told her no, she said I wasn't her sister. We haven't had a good relationship in years, and I honestly thought she'd come around when our parents died. Instead she pushed me away and blamed me." James clenched his jaw. How dare someone treat his Lilyflower like that. "Lily.. That's terrible." "I know.." she said quietly, not looking at him. "So where are you gonna go for the holidays?" She shrugged. "Tunie sold the house, so I had to pack everything before I left." James nodded.
"You can spend it with me then. Take a little stress off your back." Lily shook her head and looked at him. "No I cant. I don't want to intrude. I'll just stay at Hogwarts." James rolled his eyes. "You aren't intruding. Sirius will be there, as well as Remus. My mom would love to have another girl in the house. It's usually just her and four boys." Lily smiled.
"We just started Hogwaerts yesterday.." "And? Remus and Sirius have been talking about Christmas since June... Please Lily. I would love for you to come. I don't want you to be alone here." Lily looked at him and cocked her head. "First Christmas without them. I won't tell anyone of course, but I'm not gonna leave you here going through that alone."
Lily teared up as she looked at him. Then to James surprise she hugged him, tucking her head into his chest. "Thank you James.. I'll come this Christmas." James hugged her back and laid his head on hers. His heart was beating so fast he was sure she could hear it. "It's no problem. I'd do anything for you, Lils." Lily looked up at him and smiled. "I'm sorry for being so mean to you the last six years." James shook his head. "I was a jerk. I deserved every name you called me." Lily nodded. "You were a jerk.." James chuckled and looked out at the sky.
"The sun is rising.. we should head back and get ready." Lily sighed and nodded, keeping her head on James chest. "Yeah... this is really nice though." James smiled. "It is. But we live together now so we can do it again whenever you'd like." Lily smiled up at him. "I might just take you up at that." James smiled at her and let her go. He gave Aurora a treat and kissed her head before grabbing Lilys hand. "Come on."
James and Lily arrived back at their dorms and seperated to get ready. James went to his wardrobe and pulled his uniform out. Black trousers, a white button up and his jacket that had the Gryffindor emblem on it. He pinned his head boy badge to his chest and went to the bathroom. James brushed his teeth then began to do his hair. It never laid down so he brushed it so it wasn't tangled, then messed it up.
He walked out of the bathroom, grabbed his book bag and flicked his wand. His bed began to make itself and everything began to organize itself. He turned his bedroom light off and walked down the stairs. James picked up the two coffee cups and took them to the small sink in the corner of the room. James then sat down and pulled on his shoes.
After a few minutes Lily walked out. She had on her black pleated skirt that reached a few inches above the knee, a white button up, and her uniform jacket with the same emblem and badge as James'. She also had on white socks and black Mary janes. "Did you wait for me?" Lily grinned. "Until the very end." James smirked. Lily blushed and pulled her bag over her shoulder. "Well then let's go."
James stood up fixing his bag and following Lily out the common room like a lost puppy. She stopped in their office and went over to her desk. "Professor McGonagall left our schedule. We'll have our second free period after double potions which will be our last class." James nodded. "Wanna start planning the welcome party then?" Lily nodded and walked over to James, who was also looking at his schedule.
"Looks like we have all the same classes. Meet after double potions?" James nodded. "Yeah, but you're acting like I wont see you till then. Will you miss me Lily?" She rolled her eyes. "Absolutely." LIly teased and put her schedule away. "I always knew you couldn't resist me." James joked. Lily grinned "Oh hush and lets go." James nodded and put him away as well before following her out of the room.
When they arrived there were only a few people awake, those people being prefects and some ravenclaws. James and Lily sat at their table and chatted for a few minutes, until three people joined them. "Good morning Prongs, Lily." Remus said happily, sitting down in front of Lily. "Good morning Remus." Lily smiled.
Before James could say anything Sirius sat next to him with a dramatic grone. "Why did you have to move out? Moony is so mean in the morning." "No, you are just too stubborn to wake up." Peter said with a chuckle. He yawned and sat in front of James.
James grinned and patted Sirius on the back. "I'm sorry Padfoot, how about on our first hogsmeade weekend I'll buy you butterbeer?" Sirius leaned into James' side. "And prank products?" He fluttered his eyes dramatically. James rolled his eyes. "Of course." Sirius grinned and hugged him. "Okay get off of me you mutt." Sirius gasped. "Take that back!" He grinned at James. "Never." James grinned back. Remus rolled his eyes.
"How do you deal with these two?" Lily asked Remus and Peter. "We don't." They said in unison. Lily giggled and started to eat. As did everyone else, when Marlene flopped down next to Lily digging her head in Lily's shoulder. "I hate Mary.. why is she so mean in the mornings." Lily opened her mouth to say something, then her eyes went wide.
"Oh my gosh.. You and Sirius are basically the same person." Lily looked down at her friend with a smirk. Marlene picked her head up and looked at Lily with a straight face. "And you insult me. How rude. You are supposed to love me and instead you compare me to that dingus." "Hey! I'm a delight, McKinnon. Plus at least I don't look like a blonde rat when I wake up."
Marlene picked up a scone and threw it at Sirius. Which was no use cause he caught it and ate it. "Don't be rude, McKinnon." Lily looked at James and he shook his head with a small smile. Marlene and Sirius really were the same person. "Whatever you mangy mutt." Marlene muttered and began to eat.
"Where's Mary?" Lily asked, butting jam on a piece of toast. "She's eating with Jasmine Cameron. The hufflepuff." Lily nodded and ate her toast. After thirty minutes of chatting and eating breakfast. McGonagall came around with schedules. "Thank you dearest Minnie." Sirius and Marlene said at the same time, causing them to glare at each other.
"Don't call me that Black, McKinnon." She gave Peter and Remus theirs and continued on to the other kids. "What about yours?" Peter said confused, looking at James and Lily. "Ours were in our office." James said nonchalantly, eating his waffles. "Office?" Lily nodded. "Yes." Sirius smirked. "Can i-" "When we get settled. We have some planning to do." Lily said kindly. James for sure though she was gonna say no. "What Lils said."
Remus raised a brow between the two. "Well I think we should head to class.. Who has transfiguration first?" Sirius, Peter, and Marlene raised their hands. "Okay then.. What do you two have?" Lily pulled her schedule out. "Herbology." James nodded and swollen his food. "We all have the same class." Remus nodded. "We'll see you guys later." Remus and the other three walked away.
Lily ate the last bit of her food. "Ready?" James nodded and smiled at her. "Yeah just let me finish my toast." Lily nodded and looked around some, scanning the room. Suddenly Lily stood up and grabbed his arm and her bag. "Actually you should just take it to go." James choked on his food and Pulled his bag off the floor.
He turned his head and looked at her worriedly. "Darling what's wrong?" The word slipped before he could even stop himself. James looked at her flushed. Lily blushed some and smiled softly, before it disappeared. "It's nothing I just wanna leave."
James scrunched his brows and cocked his head, turning to search the room. It only took a few seconds for him to spot the man staring at Lily and him. Serverus Snape. James clenched his jaw. "Lily, you can't let him run you out of every room you're in.
Lily looked down. "I know... I just don't wanna face him.. not yet." James looked at her for a long while before nodding. "Alright, but I'll always be here if you need me. Until the end." Lily blushed as the last words left his mouth, which made him insecure. I totally blew it. He thought to himself. "Until the end." Lily smiled at him and grabbed his hand. "Now come on, we're gonna be late."
