The beginning of whats to come

prophecy

noun

1.a prediction of what will happen in the future.
"a bleak prophecy of war and ruin"

prophecies. They can be the answer to dire questions or to some more simple things. who will become the minister of magic? Will someone create a cure for dragon pox? Will Grindelwald be defeated?

In most cases however a lot of prophecies never get heard or in quite a few cases are just simply never heard and forgotten even by the witch or wizard of whom spoke them. In rare cases prophecies are taken into the hands of people who not only fulfill prophecies in doing so but hold them for their own gain. These are the most harmful prophecies. The ones were simply who hears such a prophecy can be a huge turning point.

Amidst the onslaught of what is now declared the first wizarding war, during mid june of 1980 a prophecy was spoken. Spoken by one Sybil Trelawney in the presence of the one and only Albus Dumbledore. The first mistake. At this time the war was steadily progressing at a pace unlike anything they'd first expected, the ministry was being run awry with the onslaught of death eater attacks, the wizengamot full of conflicting sides. The war had come from nowhere really, despite what people had said, and although it had been happening for just over a year it felt far far longer. The wizarding world was divided and had dumbledore's newly formed order, the ministry and the death eaters all at each other's throats. Members of the order were stressed beyond repair, the resources and morale more than anything were depleting. Both potters and longbottoms were ready to deliver wizarding children within the next phase of the moon, yet dumbledore was interviewing for a new divination teacher when they needed guidance. The prewett brothers had been killed in  a recent raid, molly weasley was distraught, Evan rosier had escaped but not before ridding alastair of his eye. Not that such a thing seemed to phase moody as of lately. He was flaunting his new magical eye every chance he could.

Inside the crowded walls of the three broomsticks Dumbledore was being followed, stalked. Severus Snape, potions master and newly recruited death eater, was lurking a pace behind Dumbledore and had been doing so for the past few days under orders from the dark lord. Wether Dumbledore knew he was there or not, snape wasn't sure but he hadn't been confronted so he continued his task. The prophecy was a shock to Dumbledore, an even bigger shock to Snape who was eavesdropping, especially because of what was spoken.

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches,

Born to those who have thrice defied him,

born as the seventh month dies.

And the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal,

but he will have the power the Dark Lord knows not,

And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives.

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies.’

Born to those who thrice defied him? That's referring to the order it must be, but only two families are- No…

Severus was not stupid, far from it. He knew who that prophecy could be about, just as he knew Dumbledore did and he could barely stomach it. There was a fifty-fifty chance. Anyone else. Not his lily. He couldn't care for the baby, a product of his bully, the man he despised, but he knew lily would lay herself to rest before even the thought of someone getting to her baby. He ran, before Trelawney had even fully finished speaking. He knew the longer he lingered the likelihood of him being spotted grew closer and the longer he took to relay such information would be questioned by the dark lord, that he could not risk. Not when it could get his lily. Afterall he’d do anything to protect her. On his way to the dark lord all his mind would say was, please let it be the Longbottom boy. Please let the dark lord choose him.

After the prophecy was spoke a lot happened in the span of the next year. Sides were changed, vows and promises bounded by magic were made. Things never seemed to stop. Both wizarding families gave birth to healthy sons, born mere mintues apart late on the night of July 31st and early turn of August 1st. The order went into protection mode as friendships were pushed to the brink of death. All to keep the prophesized boy safe, whoever it turned out to be.  Attacks were at an all time high. That was until that fateful halloween night, 31st of October 1981 just past the boys first birthdays. The night the wizarding world changed for good. When dumbledore and Voldemort made the definitive choice and set out to achieve their shared goal. Death. Only one would get what they wanted.
