the letter

Today was the day, the day james had been waiting a decade for.

well eleven years, but who was really counting?

James was, in-fact he had been counting the days since his fifth birthday. Today was his eleventh birthday, six years after, the day he would finally get his Hogwarts letter.

James was a pureblood so he was raised with magic all around him, he’d been to Diagon alley, Hogsmeade, all the places a wizard or witch would go, of course, but he knew Hogwarts was different.

Just by the way it had been described to him, the way people had talked about the castle and the grounds surrounding it.

It excited him really, his whole life he’s been told about how magical this place is, but now? now he gets to experience it for himself.

If you asked james if he was excited to go, he wouldn’t be able to tell you, there is a part of him who is reluctant to move away from his home, his family, but on the other hand he wants to make new friends and impress his professors.

Of course james has friends, i mean he’s james potter! but they’re not really his friends, more mutual family friends who he’s grown up with.

Apart from two, marlene McKinnon and Peter Pettigrew.

The three of them have been inseparable for as long as they’ve known each other, always seen playing hide and seek in the woods (not that peter had particularly enjoyed the woods part of it) or running around in the front garden playing it.

Peter was smaller than James and Marlene, and significantly wider, though that didn't stop him from joining in on the activities that they did.

Marlene on the other hand was a slim, tall and sporty girl.

She and James loved to play quidditch in the small quidditch pitch James’ dad, Fleamont, had built for them.

Peter often joined them but he was never as good as the two of them, so he mostly sat out on the side and commentated the mini match between them.

Besides his two best friends, James mostly spent time with his parents, either helping them make dinner (not that he was very good at it, but he tried nonetheless) or stalking around after them.

That was what he was going to miss, the feeling of comfort that his home and family gave him.

He was also an only child so he wasn’t sure how he felt about having to share a dorm with complete strangers.

A positive, though, is that peter and marlene are both in the same year as him, so he won’t be lonely, at least be hopes not.

***

It was around 11:30 am when an owl appeared at the kitchen window with a letter tied to its ankle.

“Jamie!!” a deep but jolly voice echoed from the kitchen.

“Coming dad, one second!” James returned leaning over the banister, before hastily and not so gracefully, rushing down the stairs.

His dad was stood idle by the sink with a slight grin on his face before moving aside so James could see the owl perched on the windowsill.

“Is it my letter?“ james exclaimed practically jumping up and down on the spot.

“why don’t you take a look?” Fleamont, smirked playfully.

James didn’t need anymore convincing, and burst into a run to get to the owl as quick as possible.

Before he started to unravel the letter from the owls leg he glanced back at his dad and smiled, thinking of the time he had explained to James how it felt when he got his first letter.

Before long the letter was ripped open without care and the contents were soon scattered around the oak wood dinning table.

James re-read the letter, in-fact he re-read it over and over again.

He finally understood what his dad had been talking about. Obviously he knew Hogwarts was real, but this, this was his confirmation. This letter meant he was going to Hogwarts.
