the trio
August 30th 1971
It had been over five months since James had received his letter, yet every day he would still stare at it lying on his bedside table propped up against his lamp.
His mum, Euphemia, had insisted on keeping it tucked away so it wouldn’t get damaged but James had convinced her to let him keep it out, at least until they visited Diagon alley to purchase his school stuff.
That day had passed over a week ago now but neither of his parents had taken the time to ask for it back.
James assumed they had forgotten about it, not that he was complaining, it meant he had more time to keep re-reading it.
He has to admit he wasn’t the happiest when he found out first years were not permitted to bring their own broom with them because of some freak accident that had occurred the previous year.
That wouldn’t stop James though, he could still talk about how he has one of the best brooms back at home, or how he takes such good care of it with his broomstick servicing kit.

It was around midday when Peter and Marlene arrived at his front door.
They were going to have one last sleepover before they had to leave for school.
“hey Potter!!” Marlene exclaimed while nonchalantly walking past him making her way into the living room.
“hi marls, you alright Pete?” James asked peering at peter, he seemed nervous, fidgeting with his hands.
“yeah just a bit scared to go, you know?” peter spoke quietly while hanging his coat up on one of the many hooks by the front door.
“Dont worry about it, im sure it will be fine!” James replied sincerely.
Peter nodded unsteadily and continued into the living room after Marlene.
James followed close behind but instead he walked into the kitchen.
“want any drinks?” he shouted so the others could hear him.
“No thank you” Marlene replied from behind him, you could almost hear her smile.
That didn’t change the fact James practically jumped out of his skin and let out a squeal that made his face light up with embarrassment.
“oh my gosh Marls dont do that” he said exasperated trying to regain his breath.
“oops” She said grinning at him while grabbing a few multi coloured flying saucers out of the sweet jar that was sat on the counter.
“I fear you’re only friends with me for my sweets, my dear Marlene.” James said sarcastically.
“Oh how terrible of me!” She exclaimed, clutching her chest as if she was in pain.
James rolled his eyes and stalked back into the living room.

“so, James we all know you want to be in gryffindor but Pete what about you?” Marlene asked while the trio were lounging around on the Potters burgundy sofas, with a game of wizards chess layed out in-front of them.
“well im hoping for gryffindor as well ” he said glancing nervously at James “but my dad said there is no way i could get into gryffindor..” he continued, trailing off towards the end.
“dont listen to him Pete, im sure you will!” James spoke enthusiastically while Marlene nodded in agreement.
“what about you Marls?” peter questioned.
“honestly im not fussy as long as im not in Ravenclaw” she said rolling her eyes dramatically.
“what wrong with Ravenclaw!?!” James burst out.
“well they’re all neeks aren’t they?” she continued.
“Marls!” James and peter let out at the same time, but soon all three of them erupted into a fit of laughter.
