5x09 part 2
Meredith was finally home. Andy was trying to get six months old Alex to sleep while Meredith was laying in bed.
Andy rocked Alex gently in her arms, pacing slowly around the dimly lit nursery. The six-month-old fussed, her tiny hands gripping the fabric of Andy’s T-shirt as she whimpered against her chest. Andy sighed, adjusting her hold and humming softly.
"You’re fighting it, huh? Just like your mama," Andy murmured, pressing a soft kiss to Alex’s dark curls. "Stubborn little thing."
From the bedroom, Meredith’s voice was soft but teasing. "Did you just call our daughter stubborn?"
Andy smirked, still swaying. "I mean… the evidence is right here. She’s exhausted but refusing to sleep. Just like you after a long shift."
Meredith chuckled from where she lay in bed, propped up on her elbows. "She just misses me. Six months old, and already a little Grey."
Andy huffed out a laugh. "More like a Grey-Herrera, because she’s also giving me hell for it."
Alex let out a tiny, sleepy whimper, her eyelids fluttering. Andy adjusted her grip, rubbing soothing circles on her daughter’s back. "Come on, baby girl. You’ve got Mama home now. You can sleep."
Meredith watched from the bed, exhaustion in her eyes but also something softer—something full of love. She reached out a hand toward Andy. "Bring her here."
Andy hesitated. "You sure? You’re tired."
"I’m fine. Let me hold my baby."
Andy smiled, crossing the room to sit on the edge of the bed. She carefully placed Alex in Meredith’s arms, and the baby immediately settled against her mother’s chest with a deep sigh. Meredith’s fingers trailed over Alex’s tiny back, and she pressed a kiss to her daughter’s head.
"She smells like you," Meredith murmured.
Andy raised a brow. "Sweat and smoke?"
Meredith smirked, glancing up. "No. Safe. Home."
Andy swallowed, her heart squeezing in that way it always did when Meredith looked at her like that. Like she was something steady. Something real.
She leaned over, brushing a kiss to Meredith’s lips before resting her forehead against hers. "Missed you."
Meredith’s fingers curled around Andy’s. "impossible. You were with me in the hospital most of the time."
Alex let out a soft sigh, finally surrendering to sleep.
Meredith smiled at her wife. " Is different. Put her in her crib thane come back. I may need extra cuddles. "
Andy carefully lifted Alex from Meredith’s chest, cradling her close for a moment before standing. The nursery was small but cozy, a space that had once been their walk-in closet before they’d transformed it into something softer—something full of love. The walls were painted a gentle sage green, adorned with delicate firefly decals that Meredith had rolled her eyes at but secretly loved.
She crossed to the crib, lowering Alex onto the mattress with practiced ease. The baby stirred slightly, but Andy placed a gentle hand on her chest, rubbing slow, soothing circles until she relaxed again.
"Good girl," Andy whispered, tucking the blanket around her.
She stood there for a moment, watching the slow rise and fall of Alex’s tiny chest, listening to the soft, rhythmic breaths. Even after months of being a mom, it still hit her sometimes—this overwhelming feeling of love, of responsibility, of disbelief that she got to have this, that she got to have them.
"Andy," Meredith’s voice was soft from the bed.
Andy turned, her lips twitching at the sight of her wife, already half-asleep but still reaching a hand toward her. With one last glance at Alex, Andy padded back to the bed and slid in beside Meredith.
Immediately, Meredith curled into her, tucking herself against Andy’s side with a sigh. " I missed this. Us our bed. "
Andy ran her fingers through Meredith's hair. " Me too ángel. I'm so glad you are home. "
Meredith melded into Andy's arm's." I love you so much princesa. "
Andy let out a smile. " I love you too. "
At the next morning
Andy woke up and walked into Zola's room to find Ellis cuddled up to her big sister. " Morning Mami. Ellis refuses to let me out of bed. "
Andy let out a smile. " I grew up as a single child so I can't really help you with that. "
Zola ran her fingers through Ellis's hair. " You are lucky you are really cute."
Andy chuckled as she leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. "Yeah, well, you're stuck with her. Big sister duties and all."
Zola huffed dramatically but smiled down at Ellis, who was still curled against her, tiny fingers clutching the edge of Zola’s pajama shirt. "I know. And I don’t really mind. She just missed Mom."
Andy’s heart softened. "We all did."
Ellis stirred at the mention of Meredith, rubbing her sleepy eyes. "Mama home?" she mumbled, voice still thick with sleep.
Andy stepped forward, kneeling beside the bed. "Yeah, baby. Mama’s home. But we are going let her rest until breakfast is ready. I'm going to wake up your brother. "
Andy left Zola's room to walk into Bailey's room. Het ran her fingers through this hair." Morning buddy. Os time to wake up. "
Bailey groaned, turning his face into the pillow. "Five more minutes," he mumbled, voice muffled.
Andy chuckled, ruffling his hair. "Come on, kid. You know the rules. No sleeping in on Mama’s first morning back home."
Bailey peeked one eye open, then sighed dramatically. "Fine. But only because I missed her."
Andy grinned. "That’s the spirit." She patted his back before standing up. "Get dressed and meet us in the kitchen. I’m making breakfast."
That got his attention. Bailey sat up, rubbing his eyes. "Pancakes?"
Andy smirked. "What do you think?"
Bailey shot her a thumbs-up before flopping back onto the bed for just a second longer.
After breakfast was ready Andy walked back into her room. " Morning mi amor. Let me carry downstairs so we can have breakfast with our kids. "
Meredith stirred, blinking sleepily as she stretched under the covers. A slow smile spread across her lips as she took in Andy standing at the bedside, arms crossed, eyes warm with quiet affection.
“Mmm,” Meredith hummed, reaching a hand toward her wife. “You’re really offering to carry me downstairs?”
Andy smirked. “I mean, I’d carry you anywhere, but mostly, I just know you’re still exhausted.”
Meredith sighed dramatically but let Andy pull back the blankets. “Fine, but only because I want breakfast and because I missed you.”
Andy chuckled. “I’ll take it.” She bent down, sliding her arms under Meredith’s legs and back before lifting her effortlessly.
Meredith laughed, wrapping her arms around Andy’s neck. “Show-off.”
“Always,” Andy said, pressing a kiss to Meredith’s forehead as she carried her toward the stairs.
By the time they reached the kitchen, the kids were already gathered around the table, the smell of pancakes filling the air. Ellis perked up immediately, clapping her hands. “Mama!”
Meredith smiled, reaching out as Andy set her down in her chair. Ellis grabbed Meredith's hand. " I missed you Mamma. "
Meredith smiled at her daughter. " I missed you too honey. "
Later
The older kids were at school and Alex was having her nap so Andy and Meredith were cuddling on the couch. " Andy you need to get back to work. You are on your way to your promotion and I don't want to miss this chance. "
Andy took a deep breath. " Mer my priority right now I taking care of you. "
Meredith squeezed Andy's hand. " Princesa you know how this works. If you let this chance past by with may be years before you get another shot. I have my sisters and you will have enough time to take care of me when you are off shift. "
Andy pulled her wife closer. " Mer I'm not ready to be away from you right now. "
Meredith's heart softened at Andy's words. She could feel the sincerity in her voice, the quiet hesitation that came from a place of love and devotion. "I know, mi amor," Meredith whispered, running her fingers through Andy's hair, "but we both know how much this means to you. You’ve worked so hard to get here you are right now."
Andy shifted, resting her head against Meredith’s chest, closing her eyes for a moment. "I know, but right now, I just… I just want to be here. I want to be a good mother and a good wife."
Meredith smiled gently, her thumb brushing over Andy's knuckles. "You are an amazing mother and wife. But you’ve been working so hard, and I want to see you thrive, you don't have to give up on your dreams. "
Andy sighed but nodded, squeezing Meredith’s hand. "I can't right now Mer. I just need to be close. "
Meredith kissed Andy's cheek. " I understand babe. But I think you also need get back to work. "
Andy took a moment before replying. " Okay I will get back to work next shift. But you have to promise me your sister's are going to call me if anything happens."
Meredith nodded. " I promise. "
Andy kissed her wife. " Okay, now let me get you back to bed so I can clean your serugical sight and change your bandages "
Andy scooped her wife into her arms.
As Andy carried her wife Meredith ran her fingers through the back of Andy neck. " You love this don't you?"
Meredith nodded. " Yes know I do. I love how strong you are. "
As soon as the reached their room Andy carefully put her wife in bed. Than the firefighter lifted Meredith's shit and put on some gloves before removing the bandage. " It's healing well. "
Andy carefully cleaned Meredith’s surgical site, her hands steady but gentle. Meredith watched her, eyes soft as she let Andy take care of her. It wasn’t often that she let someone fuss over her, but with Andy, it felt different. Safe.
“You really are good at this,” Meredith murmured, wincing slightly as Andy applied a fresh layer of antiseptic.
Andy glanced up, her lips quirking. “Well, marrying a firefighter and paramedic has it picks. "
Meredith smirked. “ It definitely does. "
Andy finished securing the fresh bandage, smoothing her fingers over the tape before discarding her gloves. She sat back on the bed, taking a deep breath. “There. All done.”
Meredith reached for her hand, threading their fingers together. “Thank you, princesa.”
Andy brought Meredith’s hand to her lips, pressing a soft kiss to her knuckles. “Anytime, mi amor.”
Meredith shifted slightly, wincing as she tried to get comfortable. Andy immediately noticed, adjusting the pillows behind her.
“Better?” Andy asked.
Meredith nodded, sighing as she sank into the bed. “Much.”
Andy lingered for a moment, watching her wife. There was still exhaustion in her face, the aftereffects of surgery and recovery taking their toll. “You should rest.”
Meredith tugged on Andy’s hand, pulling her closer. “Only if you stay with me.”
Andy let out a soft chuckle but slid under the covers beside her. As soon as she settled, Meredith curled into her, her head resting against Andy’s shoulder.
“I missed this,” Meredith whispered.
Andy tightened her arms around her wife, pressing a kiss to her temple. “Me too.”
For a while, they just lay there, wrapped up in each other, listening to the quiet sounds of their home.
