Beautiful

🎵Beautiful from Heathers the Musical🎵

It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, birds chirping, the weather was just right. It should be a good day, but to Regulus, today was the worst day of his life. It was his senior year of high school. Most would be excited, either because it was a momentous time, or they just couldn’t wait to leave high school. For Regulus, he would rather die than have to go to that hell hole. This would be his first year without Sirius to protect him.

Regulus was content to just rot in his bed all day, but Sirius didn’t have the same sentiment. Sirius barged in and dragged Regulus out of bed, quite literally, kicking and, not quite screaming, but definitely quite of a louder voice than should be used at 8 in the morning. Regulus was forced up and brought to the kitchen where Remus was sat drinking his morning coffee in a mug that said “Fresh out of Fucks.” Regulus sat down, but couldn’t quite eat, his stomach was twisted in knots. He didn’t feel like talking, but Sirius loved talking, he kept asking if Regulus was excited, and talked about his senior year.

“Yeah, well you were popular, everyone liked you, can’t say the same for me, they’ll eat me alive!” Regulus, ever the dramatic, said. Sirius scoffed and went to reply, but got a call.

He quickly answered and talked very animatedly on the phone. How Sirius had this much energy in the morning, Regulus would never know. Remus chuckled a little, making Regulus look up.

“What? Is something funny?” Regulus asked in a slightly annoyed tone, he liked Remus, but he hated being laughed at.

“Nothing. Just you remind me so much of Sirius sometimes, it’s funny.” Remus answered in a weird tone that Regulus refused to think about. He was snapped out of thoughts by Remus telling him he should go get ready. Regulus was once again reminded of how much he would rather die than go there, to Hogwarts High School. Even so, he knew he couldn’t avoid it, it was either get ready, or be dragged to school in pajamas. Regulus chose the obvious choice, he doesn’t need to give those people anymore of a reason to talk shit about him.

He walked back to his room and started thinking about what to wear. Just as he was about to enter his room, Sirius came out of his own room.

“You should wear the scarf I got you for Christmas, Reggie!” Sirius said in an overly cheerful voice.

Regulus knew exactly which one he was talking about, and wanted to immediately refuse. It was a bright red and yellow one, a scarf that absolutely would draw attention to him and put a target on his back. It also would not fit with any of the clothes he had. He didn’t want to upset Sirius, so he simply hummed and hurried into his room. He quickly pulled out a nice dark green long sleeved shirt, threw a black t-shirt with some band name on it, pulled on some black jeans and left for the bathroom. He quickly brushed his teeth and hair, just finishing when Sirius called it was time to go. Regulus gave one last look over, and knew he was screwed, but he was that already, but he was double screwed, he had put on a BTS shirt, he should’ve just wore Sirius scarf, maybe it would’ve drawn attention away from the shirt. He was about to go change when Sirius came in and dragged him out to the car.

Just as they were about to leave, Sirius announced he forgot something and rushed back in with Remus and Regulus shaking their heads at each other. They waited a few minutes when they saw Sirius rushing out with something in his hand. Regulus was horrified when he realized what it was. It was the damned scarf that was as bright as remembered, maybe even more so. Regulus was now triple screwed, he was going to die today. As soon as Sirius got into the car, Regulus was about to protest to the scarf, but Sirius had this look on his face, and he knew he couldn’t say no, not to his brother. Plus, he was already dead, what's one more target.

“Fine, give me the scarf Sirius.” Regulus said, irritated. Sirius cheered and threw it back to Regulus saying “You’ll look great!” Regulus knew he wouldn’t, but at least he had his brother's scarf for when he died.

They arrived at the school in about ten minutes, just as the first bell rang to let kids know to start heading to class. Regulus could already see the faces of the people in there, it made him nauseous.

“He hadn’t even made it out of the car and he was already going to be sick, how the hell was he supposed to last all day” Regulus thought to himself.

“What are you waiting for? Want me to give you a big brother speech? Ever since you were a kid, I knew you were destin-”

“Okay! Thanks, Sirius. Love you, see you at dinner! Bye Remus!” Regulus rushed out as he practically jumped out of the car.

Regulus was not in the mood for one of his brothers speeches, he’s heard it all ever since they moved away from their parents, it was too much for Regulus to handle. Especially since he had another hell to enter. He waved one last time to the car and turned around, immediately seeing two people he’s known since Kindergarten, Marlene and Dorcas. Dorcas was talking to Marlene, while Marlene stood there. It wasn’t hard to guess it wasn’t a nice, friendly talk. Not when Marlene looked about two seconds away from crying and Dorcas had a mean look on her face. It also has to do with their past.

They used to be close, but everyone changes. Well Marlene didn’t really change from the loud, hyper, friendly kid she used to be, she was still all that, but less extreme. Dorcas was the one who changed the most, she used to hang off of Marlene, now I think she would rather hang her. Dorcas changed around 8th grade, she was already distant before that with Marlene, but after talking with some others, Dorcas outright said she hated Marlene, and not just that, she threw her lunch tray on Marlene too, completely embarrassing her. That’s also when Marlene stopped being so loud, the poor girl lost her friend and was embarrassed in front of everyone. It was a sad day.

Regulus felt bad, but he knew there was nothing he could do, he tried, and after that, Marlene came and told him never to do it again. So he didn’t, he knew how bad the people here could be. He hated it, he knew most of these kids since they were in Kindergarten, and they were all nice, good people. What happened to them all? Regulus knew it was foolish, but he couldn’t help but have hope that inside, they were all beautiful and would change one day. Regulus was then snapped out of his thoughts by a guy running into him.

“Watch it, Gay-ass!”

“Ah, Barty Crouch Jr.” Regulus thought. “Sorry, didn’t see you there. Dick.” Regulus said, the last part was a whisper, but it seemed Barty heard him. “What did you say cocksucker?”

“Sorry, nothing nothing” Regulus rushed out, Barty looked ready to hit him when one of his friends called him over. “That was a close one,” Regulus said under his breath.

Just then, someone poked Regulus in the arm, making him jump and let out a little yelp.

“Woah, Reg, calm down, it’s just me, Pandora.” Regulus had never been so happy to hear that light, airy and sweet voice. “Hey Dora! Did you still want to come over tonight?” Regulus asked excitedly.

“Yeah, totally, we can watch The Corpse Bride again!” Pandora answered with just as much enthusiasm.

“Haven’t we watched that movie 100 times by now, Dora?” Regulus said with fake annoyance.

“Yeah, but does it ever get less good?” Regulus snorted and went to reply, but a loud voice boomed across the courtyard.

“Look, gay-ass over there with the weirdo is wearing his Mommy’s scarf. Oh wait, his mom was a drunkard or was she the slut!” The voice who spoke was Evan Rosier. The joke wasn’t even that funny, but everyone loved Evan, so they laughed. Both him and Barty are on the football team, both the basic jocks, but everyone loved them and feared them.

“Wow, that was so funny Evan, I’m dying of laughter, please never make a joke again.” a sarcastic voice said.

Regulus couldn’t help but panic, he knew this voice very well, it was the most popular guy in school, someone everyone worshiped, Severus Snape. He was a massive ass, and was always followed around by two others, they were called The Slytherins. The first was Mulciber, he obviously wanted so badly to be the leader, but just wasn’t as horrible as Snape, so he was stuck at second, he could however bully the other of The Slytherins. The last one of the trio was named Peter Pettigrew. It was obvious the other two didn’t like him much, but Peter was an old friend of Sirius that grew popular, so the other two tolerated Peter as much as they could. They were top dogs at the school, no one could touch them, no one dared to. What Regulus wouldn’t do to have that kind of protection.
“Reg, come on, the bell just rang, we’re late for class, you know Mrs. McGonagall will have your head for being late and will definitely tell Sirius and Remus.” Pandora spoke in a gentle voice.

She was completely right, Regulus spaced out for so long that the courtyard was basically empty. They hurried off, but Regulus needed to run to the bathroom. He told Pandora to go ahead and he would be there in a second. As Regulus was in the stall the door opened and three people stepped in, immediately one rushed into the stall right next to him and threw up.

“Grow up Peter. It’s just food poisoning, you’ll live!” The irritated voice of Snape sounded through the bathroom.

More throwing up was heard before Peter answered “Sorry Snape, I can’t help it, I knew I shouldn’t have eaten that shit.”

Mulciber scoffed and probably went to say something snarky, when the door swung open.

“Ah, Snape and Mulciber…” retching was heard, and so was a sigh from the new person “and Peter. What are you doing in the bathroom, you should be in class. I’ll have to give you detention.”

“Mr. Flitwick, Peter is sick, we’re helping” Snape said very unconvincingly.

“Not without a hall pass your not.” Regulus, hearing this, immediately pulled out his diary with hall passes in it and started scribbling.

“Actually Mr. Flitwick, we are out on a hall pass, for uh, yearbook committee.” Regulus said while stepping out of the stall.

“Well you’re all here, so I’ll let it go, but hurry along to class.” They all nodded and Mr. Flitwick handed the note to Snape.

As soon as the teacher left, Snape looked at the note and said “This is some excellent forgery. Who are you?”

“Regulus Black, I crave freedom!” Regulus didn’t mean to say that last part, but he had a chance to speak with Snape, might as well.

“Sirius’s brother? And what freedom?” Snape asked sharply.

“I hate being a target of everyone at this school, please let me sit with you, no talking required, just enough to make sure nobody will mess with me for the rest of the year.” Regulus spoke quickly.

The Slytherins just chuckled.

“Please, I also do report cards, permission slips and absence notes.” Regulus rushed to say before they could reject him.

“Can you do doctor's notes?”

“Shut up Peter!”

“Sorry Snape!”

“For being Sirius’s little loser brother, you have amazing bone structure…fine, you can sit with us, but not looking like that. Mulciber, go grab your extra clothes, and Peter, go grab your gel and brush, we’re gonna make him even better looking than Sirius ever was. Then you can sit with us. Okay?” Snape said.

Regulus answered quickly with an okay.

30 minutes later, Regulus was looking at a whole different person in the mirror. He had his hair slicked back, with a black button down, and very expensive looking jewelry. Sirius’s hideous scarf was gone as well, although Regulus did feel quite bad, they had thrown the gift away. They were just now exiting the bathroom, the hallways were crowded again, as first period had just ended. As soon as they walked out, someone shouted “Who’s that with the Slytherins?” Drawing everyone’s attention, it was kind of freaky to Regulus how fast some heads turned. Immediately he could hear the whispers, and while kind of nerve wracking, were also very flattering. For the first time ever, Regulus felt seen, important, beautiful even. Until he saw Pandora’s face.

“Reg, is that you?” Pandora had asked in a small voice.

Regulus let the others pass by before answering “Yeah, I’m tired of all this shit, so they’re helping me, it’s not that big of a deal Dora, promise! Nothing at all will change, at least not between us. Okay?” Regulus assured Pandora.

“If you’re sure.”

Regulus had been sure at the time, if only he had known better, if only he had known how much he was going to change. He felt beautiful, but he would soon learn that beauty isn’t everything.
