INTRODUCTION
The Sons of the Dragons war with one another!
After King Aenys Targaryen’s death, his brother Maegor Targaryen usurped the throne and triggered both the Faith Militant Uprising and a rebellion led by Aenys’s son, Prince Aegon Targaryen. Maegor managed to crush the opposition of the High Septon… but Prince Aegon managed to slip through his fingers in King’s Landing, with him claiming the she-dragon Quicksilver as his dragon and his sister-wife Rhaena reuniting with her she-dragon, Dreamfyre. They entered the city in a mule-drawn wagon, but left it flying on dragonback.
Prince Aegon attempted to win back the throne that by rights was his, returning to the westerlands and riverlands to assemble an army. His allies gathered at House Piper's Pinkmaiden Castle. Aegon, mounted on Quicksilver, descended from the sky to denounce Maegor as a tyrant and usurper, and called upon all honest men to rally to his banners. Fifteen thousand men joined the rebellion, and their destination was King's Landing. Aegon had gained support from lords from the westerlands and riverlands, including Lords Tarbeck, Piper, Roote, Vance, Frey, Paege, Parren, Farman, and Westerling along with Lord Corbray.
However, Aegon did not fly away from Pinkmaiden Castle alone. His sister-wife, Rhaena, insisted upon accompanying him into battle despite the small size of her own dragon Dreamfyre. She reminded her brother that Balerion was a massive beast, and he was unlikely to defeat Maegor and the Black Dread if he flew against him alone. Their grandfather Aegon the Conqueror fought alongside Rhaenys and Visenya, after all. After much argument Aegon relented, and the brother and sister flew for King’s Landing.
Lord Lucas Harroway and Lord Tully supported Maegor with their levies, however, and Ser Davos Darklyn of the Kingsguard marched from King's Landing with five thousand men. From the Reach came Lords Peake, Merryweather, and Caswell and their levies. Although each of these armies were smaller than Aegon's force, they came from all sides. Only seventeen years old, Aegon was yet an inexperienced commander. He refused to attack and defeat each of Maegor's forces separately before they could join their powers, as Lord Qarl Corbray advised, as he was loathe to divide his army. Instead, he continued his march on the capital, accompanied by his sister-wife.
Just south of the Gods Eye, Prince Aegon found Davos's force blocking his path sitting on high ground behind a wall of spears, as the forces of the Reach were advancing from the south, and the forces from Lords Tully and Harroway were advancing from the north. Aegon ordered a charge against the hill where the Kingslanders had gathered, hoping to shatter them before the other hosts could flank him. Aegon mounted Quicksilver while Rhaena mounted Dreamfyre; for the first time since the Doom of Valyria, dragon would fight dragon in the sky.
