Chapter 1
1981.
Little Lilith didn't know what was happening, she was happy to see her mother enter her bedroom and sit on the armchair in front of her cot. The little girl adored her mother, especially when she made her play with the gold necklace she always had around her neck. Margareth Zapori was a beautiful woman with olive skin, green eyes, and shoulder-length, fiery red hair. Lilith didn't know why her mother's face was streaked with tears because for a one-year-old it was still impossible to understand all those emotions; the mother passed a hand in front of her face, then stretched out her arm and took a piece of paper and a pen from the nearby desk and began to write something. When she had finished she freed her familiar, a white owl, and tied the letter to him. A paw whispered something to him before making him fly away from the window of their villa.
Maybe something had happened to her father… perhaps she should have cried too…but Lilith was sure that her father had left a couple of hours after receiving a letter, so why was the woman crying?
The woman took off her necklace and placed it on the desk, before looking for one last miserable time at that little girl who reminded her of her husband, that husband she had married so as not to be alone, that husband she had married only because she was best friends with her husband. man she had always loved but had never looked at her. She leaned back on the back of the chair took a razor blade out of her skirt pocket and did what was pure treason for purebloods, dying like a miserable muggle.
Lilith could not help but cry at the top of her lungs, big tears flowed from her dark eyes while streams of blood stained the floor and life left more and more of her mother's now cold body.
She didn't know how much time had passed, but she knew that the blood had now stopped coming out and that her mother's glassy eyes were still looking at her; he heard the front door open with such force that it slammed against the wall, quick footsteps up the stairs and the nursery door open. He saw his aunt Narcissa and his aunt Bellatrix with wide eyes, the latter holding Margareth's letter in her hand. Narcissa crossed the room with a lightning step and took the little girl in her arms who took refuge in the woman's arms. They emerged from a burning villa.
Lilith was adopted by the Malfoys when news of her father's arrest and incarceration arrived. They never changed her surname, leaving her with hers, Black. She, the only daughter of Sirius Black, the disinherited because of Gryffindor. Lucius and Narcissa raised her as a daughter along with their son Draco, her third cousin. Until they were ten they were children who followed the rules or so Narcissa thought, until the unthinkable happened.
"Draco you know that if they catch us they will ground us for life!" Lilith screamed in a whisper as she hugged herself into the lilac sweater Bellatrix had bought her that Christmas.
"Don't worry! We'll be out among muggles for a maximum of fifteen minutes, what do you want to happen?" Draco asked, looking at her sideways.
The brown-haired girl was a little reluctant, but she didn't want Draco to go alone, so she followed him.
They found themselves in the London countryside, there was a small river and many expanses of crops.
"Oh look!" The little girl exclaimed with her eyes so wide that Draco was afraid they would pop out of their sockets.
"What?" The blond asked curiously, shifting his weight to his right, and looking over her shoulder.
"A frog!"
In the stream, on a nymph, was the largest frog they had ever seen. It was shiny, of a greyish color, it looked at them for a couple of seconds and then launched itself at Draco, causing a shrill sound to emerge from his pink mouth, making the smaller girl laugh.
"It's nothing to laugh about, Lili," exclaimed the boy who had turned purple.
"I can't wait to tell Mattheo!" The little girl said between laughter.
"Don't you dare!"
They chased each other through the tall grass for a while laughing, until a sharp bang stopped them in place. A little further on, in front of them, there was a group of boys a little older than them who were smiling menacingly. Muggles.
Draco gripped Lilith's wrist and hid her behind him as those kids approached menacingly.
"What do you want?" Draco asked slightly alarmed.
“We know what you are, we saw you come out of nowhere!” exclaimed the largest of the group in a threatening manner.
"No! It is not true!" the little girl retorted from behind the blond.
Draco had to find a way to get back to Malfoy Manor without causing a mess. But what could he do?
“Do some magic!” one of the children shouted, throwing a pebble in Draco's direction.
Draco felt a lump in his throat while a slight discomfort moved in his stomach, his hands had started to sweat cold because he knew it was all his fault, if only they hadn't gone out all this wouldn't have happened, but the shirt that was being squeezed between two small fists brought Draco back to the real world. That group surrounded them and saw that they were not bare-handed, some had branches, others rocks, but what made Draco blanch even more, was the older boy who had a small knife in his hands.
"Draco...I'm scared" moaned Lilith, who in the meantime had rested her thick head against the blond's back. She was trying in every way not to let out the tears that made her eyes very shiny.
“Come on, do some magic!” one of the boys shouted, waving his stick in the air as if it were a wand.
Draco bit his lower lip. He wasn't like Mattheo or Lilith, he wasn't capable of doing magic without a wand. He did not know what to do. If he hadn't done it, they would have been hurt, but if he had forced Lilith to do a poor spell they would have gone around saying they saw two wizards, creating havoc in the wizarding world. Draco exhaled, licked his lips and ran a hand through his hair.
"All right! But you don't have to go around telling it!" Draco said, looking at the older boy.
He smiled crookedly and raised both eyebrows, crossed his arms against his chest and looked at Draco.
Draco and Lilith never spoke about what happened next. Not even with Mattheo.
*******
“Did you take everything?” Narcissa asked as she watched the three children walk towards the carriage on platform 9¾.
"Yes mum" Draco replied giving her a shy smile.
The other two nodded in response, too impatient to speak.
"We will write to you every two weeks, and please Slytherin" said Lucius, looking at them with a cold look.
The three boys rushed into their carriage and sat down on the red fabric seats.
“Are you ready?” Mattheo asked as soon as he sat down next to the window.
"Yes! I can't wait to see Hogwarts" Lilith replied, fixing her hair.
“I can't wait too,” Draco replied in turn.
It took them five hours to reach the last station marking their arrival.
The fifth years made them come down with their suitcases which were put aside."Well! First years follow me!” shouted a large man, hairy and with eyes shining like cockroaches.
"Who are you?" asked a little girl in the crowd.
“I'm Hagrid, I'm the gamekeeper at Hogwarts and I'll take you there,” he replied, looking at the first years.
To get to Hogwarts, Hagrid made them all sit in boats with a capacity of seven people each and made them sail across the Black Lake. And there, before their eyes, Hogwarts in all its majesty. A huge, rambling castle that inspired fear and respect, with a lot of towers and battlements; a building with irregular architecture which escaped the laws of statics as it was partially supported by magic. It was surrounded by the Forbidden Forest and in the distance you could see the quidditch stadium.
As soon as they arrived inside Hogwarts they went up the stairs and in front of them were McGonagall,
“Welcome to Hogwarts. So, in a few minutes, you will cross this threshold and join your companions. But before you take your seats you will be sorted into your Houses. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. For the time you stay here, your home will be your family. The triumphs you achieve will earn you points, and any violation of the rules will lose you points. At the end of the year, the House with the most points will be awarded the House Cup.” said the woman, adjusting her glasses on her nose and then continuing: "The sorting ceremony will begin very soon."
Draco shook Lilith and Mattheo's wrists and brought them in front of a boy with glasses and a strange scar on his forehead.“So what they said on the train is true. Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts.” he exclaimed in surprise.
“Harry Potter?” Lilith asked curiously. Who was he?
“I'm Malfoy. Draco Malfoy." he introduced himself but a laugh interrupted him and he looked at the boy next to Potter: "My name makes you laugh, huh? You don't need to ask for yours. Red hair, an old second-hand toga... You must be a Weasley. You will find that some wizarding families are better than others, Potter. You don't want to make friends with the wrong people. I can help you."
“I can spot the wrong people on my own, thanks,” Harry replied.
Draco was surprised. It was the first time that someone didn't indulge him, he looked at Mattheo and Lilith, who had a small amused smile on their lips, and he couldn't help but be upset.
“We are ready to welcome you. Follow me." McGonagall exclaimed, drawing everyone's attention once again.
They entered the great doors of the Great Hall and none of them had ever imagined in their lives that such a splendid and surprising place could exist. The room was lit by thousands and thousands of candles suspended in mid-air above four long tables, around which the other students were seated. The tables were set with glittering gold plates and goblets. At the far end, raised, there was another long table, around which the teachers were sitting. Mattheo raised his eyes and saw a starry sky and could not help but attract the attention of those around him.
“The ceiling is not real. It looks like a starry sky, but it's magic. It's in the book "Hogwarts History". I read it.” exclaimed a little girl with an authoritative tone, thick brown hair and rather large front teeth.
McGonagall stood in front of them and then said: “Good. Wait here, please. So, before we begin, Professor Dumbledore would like to say a few words to you."Dumbledore is an elderly man with long white hair and small glasses on his nose, which give him the appearance of Merlin, or rather, how Merlin is imagined by Muggles.
“I would like to give you all some announcements for the beginning of the year. First years take note... access to the forest is strictly prohibited for all students. Furthermore, our guardian, Mr. Gazza, asked me to remind you that the right side of the third-floor corridor is an area closed to anyone who does not wish to end up very painfully. Thank you." Having said this he sat down at the teachers' table.
“When I call your name you will come forward. I will put the sorting hat on your head, and you will be sorted into your Houses. Hermione Granger.” McGonagall explained.
The know-it-all girl who had spoken when they walked through the door was sorted into Gryffindor, as were Ronald Weasley and Harry Potter, Draco was sorted into Slytherin.“Mattheo…Mattheo Riddle” McGonagall exclaimed in a half-surprised, half-frightened voice.
The second to sixth-year students looked at each other and whispered, the teachers jumped up.
Mattheo walked with his head held high to the Sorting Hat, turned to Lilith and smiled at her.
“Hmmm.... Difficult... Very difficult. Courage to spare, I see. Not a bad brain either. There's talent, oh yes... and a desire to prove yourself. Slytherin!” exclaimed the hat.
More whispers arose in the Great Hall.
“Riddle…”
“He is the politician's son”
“Will it be like him?”
The hedgehog passed next to Lilith and shook her hand, before going to sit at the Slytherin table who welcomed him with open arms.
McGonagall cleared her throat and after taking a deep breath exclaimed: "Lilith Black!"
The little girl ran her sweaty hands over her uniform and after licking her lips she began to walk towards the stool where the Sorting Hat was waiting for her. More whispers arose in the Hall.
“A Black”
“...Bellatrix..”
“Pureblood…Regulus?”
She sat down on the stool and McGonagall placed the hat on her head.
“You're difficult too…Mmh…you're very talented, ambitious and enterprising…Slytherin!” the Sorting Hat shouted.
Lilith smiled and headed towards the Slytherin table, where Draco and Mattheo were waiting for her.
Across the Hall, at the Gryffindor table, almost everyone was talking about the Malfoy-Black-Riddle trio. Harry couldn't understand why everyone was talking, so scared, about that unusual trio.“Why is everyone talking about the trio?” Harry asked curiously, looking at Percy, one of Ron's older brothers.
“True, you don't know why the trio is so famous! "So Harry," Percy began, taking a chicken leg from the plate in front of him: "The Blacks and the Malfoys are two of the most important pure-blood families in the wizarding world and they fight for blood purity so they hate half-bloods, while Riddle ..."
“Whereas Riddle?” Harry asked to encourage him to continue.
"This... it's better if you let McGonagall explain it to you, but let's say he is the son of a very very bad man"
Potter could only glance towards the Slytherin table and noticed that the three were already looking at him with smiles on their faces.
“Shuddering,” Ron whispered as he chewed the meat he had just peeled off a chicken leg.
