Remus Lupin never planned to outlive his friends, he should have died first, they all should have lived long happy lives and he should have died first.
Werewolves rarely lived past 50, the long term effects of being ripped apart by your own body month after month were enough to kill, not to mention the persecution and lack of medical care and knowledge.
So logically, he should have died first, but he didn't, and nothing happened the way it was supposed to.
