Snap Out of It
Summary
Cordelia Black, cousin of Sirius Black, daughter of Cygnus and Druella Black, and sister to Bellatrix, Andromeda, and Narcissa, was a pureblood in every way possible. She reached all the standards her parents placed on her and never associated with the wrong sort. She knew the way things were meant to be, the way the social ladder went. Purebloods on top. Half-Bloods in the middle, and Mudbloods and all else last. This was the correct way of thinking. Well, at least that was until she met Remus Lupin.

Cordelia Black

September 1st, 1967

The Noble House of Black was one of the few true Pureblood Families out there. To be born into this family was a gift.

So why did Andromeda throw it all away? And for a mudblood at that? Was there no other respectable man who wanted her? That must be a lie. Andromeda had everything; looks, money, power; and yet, she still chose someone of such low class.

These were the thoughts of Cordelia Black as she was boarding the Hogwarts Express for her 5th year. Andromeda was her older sister.

This past summer, she revealed to her family that she was in love during a family dinner. Which wouldn't have been a problem as our parents had been looking for a match all of last year. Until she told them it was a mudblood. Then all shit broke loose. Cordelia could remember it like it was yesterday.

“Dear, we really should start planning for your future,” Father said while cutting his steak.

“It is best we secure the most eligible bachelor for you as your sister, Bellatrix has already found her husband.”

“What about Rupert Crouch?” Mother suggested. “After all, he is part of the Sacred 28.”

“But Mother, Sir Crouch is almost 32!” Andromeda said incredulity.

“Well Andromeda, what do you expect? You have all but shot down all the other respectable men we have suggested!”

“You have done so very rudely and many men have stopped their advances as you’ve proven to not be very womanly.” Mother scoffed.

“At this point, we will have to stop asking you because it seems your self standards are not up to par with your mother’s and mine.” Father stated.

“Well. Actually. I had someone in mind.” Andromeda stated meekly.

The table went silent.

“Oh goodness, who is it!” Narcissa shouted excitedly, in love with he idea of true love instead of a match made.

“His name is Ted.”

I sat silently, pausing cutting my food, to go through the list of pureblood men in Hogwarts with the name Ted.

“Ted Weasley?” I asked. As it was the only name I could think of.

“Andromeda, I hope you for your sake you are not talking about him.” Father said quietly.

Everyone at the table stopped. Father was usually very loud. He never got quiet unless he was a second away from cursing someone.

“The Weasley’s are Blood-Traitors.”

“No Father. It is not him.”

I let out a sigh of relief and mentally cursed at myself for even bringing that fool’s family’s name up.

“His name is Ted Tonks.”

I dropped my knife.

The noise echoed.

Tonks is not a pureblood name.

“What,” Father asked calmly.

“I don’t recall a Tonks family in the British Pureblood Registry.”

“He might be French or from someplace else.”

“Right, Andromeda?” Narcissa tried to bring an explanation that would make my parents satisfied.

Andromeda said nothing for a while.

The silence was killing me.

“He…”

“He’s not a pureblood at all.”

Father looked up from his meal. His eyes cold.

“Repeat that.”

Andromeda brought her eyes up to look at him.

“He isn’t a pureblood, not even a half-blood.” She stated fiercely, reading herself for whatever was to come. She thought the consequences couldn’t have been more than a slap, a stinging curse, and a scream.

How wrong she was.

Cordelia can still hear her screams from the Cruciatus curse hitting her.

I closed my eyes and waited for my friends to meet me in my compartment. I looked down and stared at the shiny prefect badge hanging from my green robes. The sight brought me back to when Andromeda got hers in the mail when she started her 5th year. She was so happy, we were all so proud of her. Why then? Weren’t we a happy family?

Cordelia ripped that thought from her mind just in time for the compartment door to slide open. Genevive Nott, her best friend, who was also a prefect stepped in with a huge smile on her face.

“Gen!” She shouted joyfully and got up to hug her.

The two hugged and Genevive sat down next to her after setting her trunk down.

“I missed you so much!” Cordelia said cheerfully.

They talked for a while until the rest of her friends showed up.

Beatrice Fawley, Annie Russo, Grace Bullstrode, and Mya Rowle. Cordelia took a moment to examine all of her friends. They were all up to par.

Her family had since had a talk with both Narcissa and her about the right company to be around and how to watch out for any blood traitors trying to get into our minds and fill them with the nonsense of muggle and mudblood talk. Equality and respect of those lesser.

How boring. Like we both didn't know that already. As the only two daughters left, as Andromeda was blown off the tapestry and disowned, we were sure to make our parents proud.

Soon, the train started moving and we all looked out the window to wave goodbye to our parents. I caught my father's eyes as he mouthed, " Make us Proud"

After the train had gotten a good way afar from the station, Genevieve and I got up to go to the compartments where the other prefects were waiting.

Gen slid the door open and what I saw made me want to throw up. Or rather, who I saw.

Lily Evans. A Mudblood. Sitting down with a prefect badge on her red robes. How could someone of her standing earn that? I was disgusted at how Dumbledore's standards seem to have dropped.

Geneive voiced out my exact thoughts.

"How disgusting. it seems Hogwarts is just giving anyone responsibility nowadays." Gen sneered.

"Letting Mudbloods into the school, I could barely stomach, but giving them power?"

"How disgraceful." She glared.

Evans' face turned red. With anger or embarrassment, I don't care enough to know.

"Hey. Knock it off" Atticus Longbottom said sternly.

We both took our seats, waiting for the rest of the Prefects to come in.

Genevieve struck up a conversation with Edward Diggory, a Ravenclaw prefect. He might have been a half-blood, but he was indeed good-looking and Genevive was always up for a snog. I just wish she would have higher standards. I sat in silence while waiting and when I heard the door open, I looked up, ready to start the meeting.

In came Remus Lupin.

I had first met him first year while walking to class. He was with my traitorous cousin, a Potter, and some scrawny kid with blonde hair. I noticed him first as he was in the back of their little group, looking down at a book, rather than get caught up with his gang's annoying jokes. He looked up and we made eye contact.

I stopped and started. he was quite pretty, I suppose. He had big brown eyes, freckles, and light brown, almost blonde hair.

I suppose that was the first time I ever found anyone pretty.

Too bad he was a half-blood.

I glared and sat up straighter and the meeting started.
