Silver Springs
11th September 2023, Sunday.
6:30AM
Devi POV
"Devi! Wake uuup!" She heard James' irritating voice sound through the dorm room.
Devi groaned, rolling onto her stomach.
"You're gonna wake up the other girls... Shush.."
"But, Devi! Mum sent us something in the mailbox!" He started walking towards the door, and Devi followed.
They opened the rusted mailbox and inside were two CDs: Rumours Deluxe by Fleetwood Mac, and Sam's Town by The Killers. Devi reached in and snatched Rumours Deluxe at record-breaking speed.
"You're so lucky I love you." James rolled his eyes, reaching for the Sam's Town CD.
"Oh shush, you do not understand Silver Springs like I do."
11:30AM
Devi was on her bed with Lily and the other roommate- who she had learnt was called Mary Macdonald. They put the CD in the slot, and listened as the opening chords of Second Hand News rung out.
'When times go bad, when times go rough,
won't you lay me in the tall grass
And let me do my stuff?'
Devi found that those lyrics really resonated with her, but she didn't know why.
3:56PM
The rain was pouring down in buckets, causing splashes and puddles. Devi was sat on her bed, once again, playing an acoustic guitar. She was singing a quiet melody, her fingers flying across the strings effortlessly. She saw the doorknob twist as Mary walked in, smiling at her.
"Nice playing." Mary complimented.
"Thanks."
"Y'know, I play the drums. If we could find a bassist, we'd make a perfect band."
Devi chuckled. "Yeah, like we just randomly go to school with a bass player."
She scoffed at the thought.
5:23PM
Mary had a visitor over, a short blonde girl with silver piercings. She was sat on Mary's bed, them both talking about some random gossip- probably boys. Marlene, her name was. She pointed out Devi's guitars, admiring them.
"Cool guitars. I'm a bass player, y'know."
Devi let out a bark of laughter. "Ironic."
"Huh?"
"Mary plays the drums, and she said we'd make a great band if we could find a bass player. I guess we have a band?"
Marlene chuckled. "Yeah, I guess. What we gonna name it though?"
Mary piped up then, a uncertain expression on her face. "What about... The Valkyries?"
The others both nodded.
"Are we actually gonna take this seriously though?" Devi smiled at the thought of this.
"I will if you will." Marlene grinned at her.
"Brilliant, then. How about we all rehearse tomorrow at 6?" Mary suggested, throwing a pillow at Marlene, who was scoffing their snacks.
Devi and Marlene nodded.
