Chapter 1
Devi Potter:
1st September, 2023.
6:30 AM
Devi lays sprawled out in her bed, with her legs dangling off opposite sides of the tiny bed. She hears the familiar tune of her alarm, "Ribs" by Lorde. She really needed to change it, it had ruined the song for her.
She peeled her legs up, still sore from that unhuman sleeping position. She gets up, and puts on a simple outfit: a white knit sweater and blue jeans. Devi pads over to her brother, James' room, and swings open the door gleefully. Devi didn't love much, but she certainly loved one thing - pissing her brother off.
"Jamielina, wake up!" Devi called, suddenly feeling much more awake at the idea of bothering him.
"Piss off, fatty.." James mumbled groggily. How rude.
"Come on, mate, it's our first day of college - remember? Don't let it slip through that thick skull of yours. Mum's done breakfast already, so get your arse up."
"Fine, I'm up, I'm up!" James said, then mumbled in a irritated tone. "Jeez, bossy.."
"I'm not deaf, y'know."
"I know, wanted you to hear. Now shut up."
10:00AM
Devi steps off of the bus, groaning under the weight of all her bags. She turns to James, who is relishing in her pain.
"Remind me again why I have to carry all your shit?" Devi huffed.
"Hmm... 'cause it's funny," James grinned from ear to ear.
"Twat."
"You love me."
"Only a little bit. Now get the map and find our dorm."
"Yes, ma'am." James said drearily, fishing through his pockets - much bigger than Devi's, she realised - for the map. After what seemed like an eon, he finally yanked it out, all crinkled with a yellow stain on.
"So, our dorm is to the left, then the right, then up the stairs, to the left, and up your arse." James shut the map and grinned at Devi.
"Har-har, very funny. Lead the way."
Once they had reached the hallway ( not without a half-hour of believing they were lost, and James just repeating "I'm gonna be Madeline Mcann!!"), they read the sign on their door.

James' lanky fingers reached for the door handle, then swung it open, revealing a very average common room. There was a little kitchenette, two sofas, a coffee table and a television. To each side of the room was a door - Devi assumed they were the dorms themselves. She walked through the right one, labelled "Girls' rooms", and was met with another average sight. Three beds, all separated with nightstands, laid across the room. There was a vanity (who on Earth would share a vanity?) and a bookshelf, which was already packed with dictionaries, sketchbooks, etc.
Though, the least average sight of all, was a firey-haired girl sat on the bed, organising her bags. Devi sighed in relief at the idea she wasn't alone here, then dropped her bags on the floor with a crash. The ginger girl turned around , and Devi could finally make out her face. She had gorgeous green eyes, a little button nose, clear skin, rosy lips..
Devi snapped out of it. No, Dev. You're not gonna fall in love with your roommate. Your *female* roommate.
"Hi!" The girl greeted Devi cheerfully, with an almost obnoxious smile. It was still adorable.
"Oh, hi. Didn't see you there. I'm Devi."
"Nice name. I'm Lily. You know who the third girl is?"
"Nope." Devi shook her head, then began unpacking her things. Once she was finished, she laid back on her bed, exhausted.
"Long day?" Lily inquired, that obnoxiously cute grin still on her face.
"Yeah. Woke up at 6:30. Then had to deal with my dickhead brother.."
"Is he the guy out there, chatting to the lanky one?" Lily pointed with a laugh.
Devi rolled over, sat up and looked out the door. James was indeed chatting to some lanky guy with the shaggiest hair she'd ever seen.
"Yep, that's him."
"You really look like him."
"Do I have a beard?"
"Huh?"
"Don't worry, just being stupid."
