Chapter 1

“Marshall you’re psycho” Chris scolded pathetically while laughing at him “like to see you try” Marshall jumped down from the school gate into the yard, he had skipped 1st 2nd and 3rd period and was so in for a beating for it but honestly when your an 11 year old kid with scars it’s either you break the rules and be known for that or people make up their own story for you “Ms Jackson is going to kill you” Chris whispers while they sneak toward the school roof “the bitch gave me a D I think she can rot in he-“ speak of the devil I guess because standing in front of the young boys was a 5’7 blonde middle aged woman who looked as if she found out the bank lost her money “I have had it with you boys your going to the principals office I’m calling your parents” the women dragged the boys to the front reception her French tip nails digging into their wrists and her pony tail angrily flapping behind her inside the office the two boys waited for their parents until a loud screech came from outside and Marshall knew his mom was here. Her cigarette smell followed her like a curse as well as the smell of her hair that she kept bleaching over again. Hope Thompson entered the office high out of her mind as she went up to the office lady Miranda I think it was and started talking, the woman pointed in the direction of the boys and she made her way the principal Mr Clifton dragged him in with her.

“It has come to our attention that Marshall is doing horrible in school skipping detention slacking off verbally mouthing off at the staff” they didn’t hold back by the time they were done naming every minor thing that he may have done it had been so long Marshall wondered if this was the punishment while his mother did nothing to defend him (she never did) something the principal said caught his attention “I’m sorry Ms Thompson but we have to expel him” wait what Marshall knew he was rude but surely not that rude he spoke up but as usual he was pushed aside bye every adult ever he was tired and pissed off his mother probably didn’t even notice what was happening anyway.

They were escorted out of the building towards his mother’s car before he could even sit down the car shot out out of the property certainly speeding back to the house. They lived in a poorer neighbourhood since Hope was only 16 when she had him and his father picked up and left when Marshall was bitten by what his mother said was a werewolf, it’s a little strange though his father was a wizard who ‘fell in love’ with what his mother explained to him as a ‘muggle’ even he doesn’t understand it that well, back to the point ever since then money has been what you can say as non existent and living in a neighbourhood where shootings and robberies are normal is just a way of getting by. Marshall likes Detroit his friends are here and he doesn’t exactly have anyone else.

They walked through the messy living room connected to the kitchen getting out a packet of Doritos to eat when his mum stopped “Marshall I want to ah talk to you about something I guess” her voice slurred forming sentences as he nodded eating his chips “you know how your dad was like magic and shit” she continued “you got a letter from the magic people and they want you to go to a wizard school” he stopped confused “ they want me at the school” she nodded her eye bags becoming prominent under her spray tan “a school with no math or science or boring shit subjects” she nodded “yes I’ll go” he laughed in delight, not believing what he was hearing “ but Marshall we need to make some changes” he squinted his eyes of course there is a catch always is “you’ll have to change your name” the room went silent, change his name he was sure his mum was high but he liked his name is name was who he is “ No what why” his mum sighed exhausted by her son’s questions “because all the kids there are rich snobby pricks that have fancy names and I don’t want you getting bullied” Marshall scoffed “what would be my name then” she looked into his eyes for what may be the first time that week “Remus Lupin”.
