Love Is Blind
Lily Evans liked her tea hot and with no sugar. She was a morning person, woke up early most days and enjoyed sitting alone, drinking her tea and maybe reading something or finishing her homework. She took another sip, while checking her mail.
A letter from her parents. Tuney seemed to have a serious relationship with that Vernon guy she met last summer. He had had dinner with the family once and honestly Lily didn't like him at all. She still wasn't sure if it was because he was too... Muggle or because he simply was a douchebag, but she suspected the second.
Today's daily prophet. Another Death Eater attack, which was enough to ruin her day.
A quidditch magazine for Marlene, nothing new, nothing interesting.
She was going to throw the rest to the trash, when she noticed the red envelope. Dumbledoor's signature.
Dear Ms Evans,
Please meet me at my office today at exactly 7:30 a.m. We have to discuss some important things regarding the latest news and your position as a Head Girl.
The password is: Popping lollies. Please don't judge my sweet tooth.
Albus Dumbledoor.
Now what was that supposed to mean? Was she in trouble? What latest news? And what did the whole Head Girl thing have to do with this?
She had a lot of other questions too, but a look at the clock made her save them for later. 7:30 was in just five minutes and she needed to hurry!
πππ
Lily had to admit she was a bit scared while saying the password and going into the office. All this was just too mysterious, and it seemed pretty important. She opened the door with almost trembling hands, only too see...
Albus Dumbledoor and James Potter looking at her, holding cups of lemon tea and strawberry jam scones.
Dumbledoor smiled.
"Good morning Ms Evans! We were waiting for you!"
Lily was very confused. The emergency was a tea party? And what the hell was James doing here?
She quietly closed the door and sat down.
" Hello professor. What's the matter? Are we in danger?"
" I'll explain everything soon dear. But please don't be worried!"
What was that supposed to mean?
" I don't understand? Is it something serious? Why did I have to be here at exactly 7:30?"
" Oh, well this is when tea is usually served! We wouldn't want it to get cold, right? Sugar or cream?"
She was speachless. And probably the most mature person in the room.
" Nah, thank you "
" Plain? Just like Mr Potter!"
This was the first time she looked at James today. He was smiling politely, his hair messy but in a gorgeous way, wearing jeans and a blue t-shirt. She hadn't seen him in muggle clothes before, but she had to admit the idiot rocked the look. He probably caught her staring, because he looked down, having another sip of his tea, his cheeks bright red. Was he... oh god he was nervous around her. Great, now she turned red too.
" Now, let's cut to the chase. I assume you two have already read today's daily prophet."
Of course it had something to do with the attacks. This just kept getting better and better.
" You know I consider our school to be one of the safest places on earth, but..."
This wasn't good. She hadn't ever seen Dumbledoor that serious.
" There have been some rumours about students being... You know. Death Eaters. I usually don't pay attention to these things, but... We recently received a letter, warning us about an attack, taking place here tonight."
Now that was something. Of course she knew about the Death Eaters. A lot of Slytherins, sadly including her ex friend Severus Snape, were flirting with the idea of joining the Dark Lord. Although she could never imagine an attack here. This was definitely terrifying at least.
" Many professors believe that a young member of the group was feeling guilty and decided to warn us. But the leading theory is that it is a prank."
" What? Who the hell would joke about that?"
Lily looked at James who was visibly furious. She could easily name some of his friends who would joke about that, but she figured it wasn't the right time to bring that up.
" We don't have a clue who could have written this Mr Potter, but there have been several check ups and interrogations. There's almost no way an attack can happen tonight."
She sighed in relief. Thank God.
" Wait a minute professor. If everything's fine, why are we here?"
James was right, but Dumbledoor laughed.
" You're a clever boy Mr Potter. Now as you can imagine, we could never leave even a slim chance of an attack happening. We need someone to check on the corridors and be ready to alert us in case of... Suspicious motion."
" So, you basically want us to take shifts around the corridors?"
" Well, I'd want you to stick together, but overall yes!"
As much as Lily despised the idea of spending time with Potter that was the last thing she cared about.
" I don't get it sir! Why us?"
" Well first of all I trust you. You've showed countless times you're reliable and brave. But mostly because you're Head Girl and Boy!"
This was scarier than the attack.
BLOODY POTTER WAS HEAD BOY???
There must have been some sort of mistake. James was... Was... A great student and a loyal person, she realised much to her frustration.
She could see why he was a Head Boy. He had made a huge progress and really matured the last year. The git deserved it. But she didn't. She was a great student. An exceptional Perfect last year. She never let herself have a break. Never broke the rules. And al of this to be a Head girl along with... bloody Potter! How could they ever compare?
" It's in the school tradition for Heads to take care of this stuff. But, I'll completely understand if you don't want to do this. Ms Evans, especially you, I have absolutely no expectations, but I wanted to ask you anyway."
She bit her lip. She was a muggleborn. This could possibly be really dangerous. Plus she could happily avoid Potter. But she was a Gryffindor. She couldn't walk out of this.
" No, professor, there's no problem with me. I'll be happy to help."
" Fantastic! I'll give you the plan and you can take a day off tomorrow. I'll speak to your teachers about it. "
Dumbledoor smiled and took a scone. It was a deal.

At 23:00 Lily left her room and a sleeping Marlene and went down the hallway.
She was supposed to meet James outside the Slytherin dorms, which was, a bit racist towards the Slytherins, but unfortunately true. Most Death Eaters wore the green tie, and stalking them was the most logical.
James was already there, reading a book. He seemed so calm and peaceful, his glasses slightly falling off his nose, holding the book so softly she almost wished it was her. Wait, wait what was that??? She hadn't yet gotten over the Amorentia incident and now what? She was staring at him?
" Hey! " She said, and he looked like he woke up from a dream.
" Hello" he smiled. " Sorry about the book, I just figured I wouldn't have something to do... Err, Dumbledoor left some coffee, would you like some? I don't really drink coffee"
" Neither do I! And don't apologize for the book, I brought my own too! Wait, you're reading Little Women?"
" Hey, don't judge, at least if we die I'll go with a classic literature masterpiece."
She laughed.
" Seriously, Lily, what are we doing here?"
She didn't know. The whole situation was too surreal to believe. But she knew he called her by her first name and that made her feel comfortable. It made her feel sure. Ok, she really needed to stop with that crap.

Apparently James was a great storyteller, because she found herself almost two hours later, listening to how Sirius accidentally taught the 'Alohamora' spell to a muggle kid. Honestly, she could get used to these late night shifts.
That was until the huge crashing sound. Oh, no.
" What was that?" said James. Of course he didn't wait for an answer. They both stood up, wands drawed, slowly approaching the defence against the dark arts classroom, where the noise was coming from.
''You don't think this is a Death Eater gathering or something, right?'' asked Lily, secretly wishing he would tell her no.
''Mabye it's just Peeves'' said James, but didn't look so certain. '' Quick, we have to so something. Get under this.''
She looked at him. He was holding... nothing really. Under what was she supposed to go? He understood her confusion.
''Oh, yes. This is my invisibillity cloak.''
Lily felt her cheeks turning red. ''I KNEW IT!'' That was it. Oh, that was so genius. That's how the maraurders managed to never get caught! That's how James was always at the right spot the right time!
''Yeah, yeah, good girl, you figured me out. Now get under the cloak and try not to make a sound''. She felt the rest of her body going red too. James caling her a 'good girl' had no right sounding that good. She went under the damn cloak. James joined her and lit up his wand, so they could see what was going on.
''We can see them, but they can't'' explained James, bending owning to their height difference . To be honest this cloak was exciting. They were now going to enter the room.
''Are you ready?'' asked James. Obviously not, but she went in anyway. She felt her hand trembling while she looked inside, shocked to see...
Slughorn and Ms Davidson making out.
What? Ms Davidson was their new DADA professor. Most kids made fun of her, because she was shy, conservative and not too strict. She'd given Mary detention once for wearing ashort skirt, and now she was... hooking up with Slughorn at 2a.m.? That was interesting. She watched the teacher throw away the books and items on the desk, making room for herself to lay down. She looked at James pleadingly. She didn't want to witness this.
''Let's go now'', he said, visibly horrified and uncomfortable. They both rushed down the corridor to where they had been earlier.
'' Well, at least it wasn't Death Eaters.'' she said. James gave her a look suggesting that mabye it would have been better.
'' But seriously now, Slughorn and Davidson?''
'' I know!! Can't even tell wich is more insufferable!''
'' What can we say Evans?'' he looked at her, half smirking and blushing. ''Love is blind!''
