The Beginning
"Yes, mom I'll keep an eye on Mike." I assure my mother, who is currently fixing up my hair, yet again, and lecturing me on how I have to keep an eye on my younger brother Mike since it's his first year at Hogwarts.
Once she's finished fussing over me, she goes onto Mike, and fixes up his hair. "You make sure you stick close to your brother okay, Mike?" She says, once she moves away from him.
We both roll our eyes at our mother. Honestly, I don't mind Mike hanging round with Jaime, Tony, Austin, Alex and I, but I'm not actually going to be keeping an eye on him every hour of the day. I can't watch him while I'm in class, he's not even in my year. He's a first year, and I'm a second year.
Shaking my head slightly at our mother, I lean up against the wall across from the gateway to Platform 9¾, and just wait for her to stop fussing over Mike and I.
As I'm waiting, I notice a boy around Mike's age with shoulder length black hair walking over to the gateway with his mother and father. Something about the boy captured my attention. But, whatever it is about him that got me so, captivated by him, I've got no idea.
Looking around nervously, he catches me looking at him, and smiles shyly at me, as I wave a little at him. I have to say, he looked absolutely adorable, and I wouldn't mind getting to know him sometime.
I watch him him kiss his mom goodbye, before he pushes his trolley cart thing with his suitcases and runs through the gateway, disappearing over onto the other side.
Eventually, my mom and dad are letting Mike and I go, and we run with our trolleys through the gateway, and onto Platform 9¾. I smile to myself as I look over at the Hogwarts Express, time for another year at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry.
Looking over at Mike, I see him staring at everything in wonder, as he follows me through the crowd of witches and wizards, as I search for my two friends, Tony and Jaime. Finally, I find them, and Mike and I make our way over to them.
"Hey guys!" I say, once Mike and I get over to them.
They both bring Mike and I in for a hug, and we talk about what we got up to over the summer, which in all honesty, wasn't really much. I mean, we can't use magic outside of school till we're seventeen which really sucks but, it's whatever.
Finally, the four of us pile onto the train, with our suitcases, and find an empty compartment, and once we do, we sit down and continue talking amongst ourselves.
After a while, there was a knock on the entrance to the compartment that we're all in, and I look up to see the same boy from before, standing there shyly.
"D-do you mind if I uh, s-sit in here with you guys?" He asks quietly. "Everywhere else i-is full."
I look over at the guys, they all shrug, not really caring that much if the boy sits with us or not.
"Sure, you can sit with us." I say, moving over on the seat, and patting the spot next to me.
He smiles shyly at me and sits down next to me, putting his bag on the floor in front of him.
"What's your name?" I ask.
He looks up at me, his black hair falling into his eyes. "K-Kellin Quinn Bostwick." He says. "B-but I prefer Kellin Quinn."
"Well hi, Kellin." I say. "I'm Vic Fuentes. And this is my younger brother Mike, and my two friends Jaime Preciado, and Tony Perry." I indicate to everyone else in turn.
He nods, giving them all a small wave, before looking down at his lap.
"So, Kellin, first year or second?" Jaime asks, getting the boy's attention.
"F-first year." Kellin says.
Jaime nods. "Mike's a first year too." He says. "Vic, Tony and I are all second years in Gryffindor house."
Kellin nods. "M-my father was a Slytherin." He admits. "A-and so was my mother, so they're both expecting me to be in Slytherin also." He sighs.
I nod, all of Mike and my family was in Gryffindor, so was Jaime and Tony's families. And, I've got a feeling that Mike is going to get sorted into Gryffindor tonight.
For the rest of the ride, we make small talk, with Kellin only adding his voice to the conversation occasionally. Not saying that's a problem. I mean, he only just met us all, but hopefully he will become one of our friends and he'll open up to us a bit more. Cause I sure do want to get to know him.
Finally, we've gotten to Hogwarts, and Tony, Jaime and I are sitting in the grand hall with everyone else at the Gryffindor table. The first years didn't come the same way as the rest of us, they got to take the boats out across the lake, and now the first years are all waiting at the front of the grand hall, waiting to be sorted into their houses.
I scan the group of first years waiting at the front of the room, spotting Mike and Kellin standing close together amongst the rest of the first years.
Eventually, once everyone is settled and Dumbledore had gotten everyone to quieten down, Professor McGonagall had walked up to the front of the room, carrying the sorting hat over to the chair in the middle of the front of the room.
Holding the hat above the chair, she started reading out the names of the first years on the list she was holding.
"Alan Ashby." She calls out.
A short boy with bright ginger hair walked out from the crowd of first years, and sat down on the chair as Professor McGonagall placed the sorting hat on his head.
Glancing over at one of my dorm mates - Austin Carlile - who sat across from me, I notice him sit up straighter, as the boy Alan Ashby was being sorted into his house. And once the sorting hat calls out Hufflepuff, and the boy runs off over to the rest of Hufflepuff, I notice Austin slump down in his seat a little, disappointment clear on his face.
Alex Gaskarth - one of my other dorm mates - pats Austin's back lightly, before turning back to the front of the room, a certain boy catching his attention.
"Jack Barakat." McGonagall says.
A boy with dark brown hair - the same boy that Alex was looking at before - walks over to the chair as McGonagall sets the hat down on his head. And when the hat calls out Ravenclaw, Alex's face falls, as he watches Jack run over to the rest of Ravenclaw.
So, I'm gathering that both Alex and Austin know both of those boys, and were hoping that they'd be in the same house as us. But, you don't always get what you want sadly.
Sitting up as McGonagall calls out Kellin's name, I watch as he sits down on the chair, and McGonagall sets the hat down on his head. I find myself hoping that he'd be in Gryffindor, but as the hat calls out Slytherin, I sigh in disappointment, watching as he quickly runs over to the Slytherin table, that happened to be right next to the Gryffindor table and I look over at him, to see that he's taken a seat directly next to me across the small space between the Gryffindor and Slytherin tables.
Turning around in my seat as he does too, he smiles shyly at me. I smile back at him, still a little disappointed that he's not in the same house as me. But really, I should've expected that, considering both his parents were in Slytherin.
Finally, all the first years had been sorted into their houses, and Mike was in fact sorted into Gryffindor. Now, Dumbledore has spoken a few words to us all, and the feast has begun, everyone digging into the food that has magically appeared at the tables - courtesy of the elves I believe who work their butts off in the kitchen for this and every other feast.
Sneaking a quick glance over at Kellin as he talked with some of the other Slytherins, I find myself wanting to become friends with the boy, despite the two of us not being in the same house.
And, hopefully he has the same idea in mind.
