Chapter 6
”Does he have to be there?“, Evan asked, making clear that he would rather clean the whole dungeon than spending any more time with Barty. He just couldn’t stand him.
This boy was a brat. Evan had known it from the beginning and over the last four years he had just become more certain, that Barty doesn’t know how to behave himself.
He might be a good student, but as soon as he left the classroom, he seemed to go crazy. Barty was loud and chaotic and basically everything Evan just couldn’t deal with.
But Pandora liked him. And Evan had to protect his sister. So he had to spend time with this prick. But he‘ll survive it. At least that’s what he thought.
“He’s my best friend, Evan!”, Pandora replied with an almost angry tone. “Of course he’s there! You two must learn to get along. Really!”
Even rolled his eyes. “I just want you to know that I don’t think that he’s good company for you”
“I can look out for myself”, Pandora answered with a harsh voice. “There’s no need for you to protect me!”
“I see”, Evan whispered, before the twins walked silently towards the lake.
Barty was already waiting for them. Pandora had told him, that she’ll bring her brother and hasn’t been quite happy either.
In his opinion, Evan was to boring. Always sitting there with a book in his hands. And these books weren’t even novels, but actual textbooks about…he didn’t even know about what. Furthermore he always seemed so judgmental. Like all Barty had to do was one wrong step and he would get executed or something.
To keep it short: Evan was a real downer.
And Barty? Barty liked having fun. He likes being loud and wild and always somehow moving. He liked making stupid jokes and laugh about them afterwards.
Evan seemed to hate that. And so Barty hated Evan. Okay, maybe he shouldn’t be that childish, as he was in his fifth year now, but Evan was worth it.
Of course Pandora wasn’t to amused that her brother and her best friend didn’t get along. She tried to set them up since they knew each other, but somehow it wasn’t working.
But if there is someone with a strong mind, who wouldn’t give up if it meant her death, then it’s Pandora.
She was certain that they would get along perfectly if they would at least try. And won’t stop until they do. Maybe they just needed to be alone for a while.
That’s why she took the first chance she got.
After they were hanging out for a while, she spotted a friend of hers.
”Would you mind if I go over to her for a while?“, she asked the boys.
They didn’t seem really happy about that idea, but what are they supposed to do against it? So they let her go.
“What are you even reading?”, Barty asked after a moment of awkward silence.
“A book”
“No shit. I mean what kind”
Evan just silently lifts the book, so Barty can see the cover.
“Poison? Seriously? Why would you read something like that?“, he asked with a wierded out expression.
Evan just shrugged and explained: “It’s interesting. And you never if that knowledge could be useful one day”
“And for what?”, Barty laughed.
“I don’t need know”, Evan answered, “We will see. You know what? Here! You can take it!”
Surprised Barty looks at the book that Evan is offering him: “What?”
“Read it! Maybe you’ll get why it’s so interesting“
„Sorry, but I’m not a reader“, Barty laughs, trying turn him down. But it doesn’t seem to work.
„Just take it“, Evan said with a smile. A fucking cocky smile. But it was probably the first time ever that he smiled at Barty.
That caught him so off guard, that he had to take the book, while staring at the other boy.
It was crazy how different he and Pandora looked, even though their features are so similar. There was such a different vibe to them.
Even if you only take their eyes. Both were dark and brown. But while Pandora always had a soft, warm look full of energy in them, while Evan’s was way calmer. And smart. It was strange.
“Uh, thanks“, Barty answered, still to surprised to think properly.
“Just give it back to me when you’re done”, Evan shrugged, “But please hurry. I want to finish it too”
