Wings of fre x Hogwarts au Chapter 3

Time for breakfast.

The Slytherin common room was about what Glory expected. Some would wonder why students from such well off families and filled with ambition would enjoy being in a dungeon below the castle, looking more like sewers. The reason, in her mind, was how ancient it felt. It reminded Glory of the days when magic was stronger and more prominent. When wizards didn’t have to keep up with the stature of secrecy. Needless to say, it was a look into the past.

Glory had no idea what the other common rooms were like, but she imagined the prideful Gryffindors had their walls lined with their own colors and symbols to remind them what ‘powerful lions’ they were. “Though I guess we aren’t much better.” Glory thought when she saw how many snake symbols decorated their own walls along with the green and silver coloring.

At least the beds were extremely comfy. Glory wasn’t too sure how much she’d get along with her roommates, seeing as Coal, Rattlesnake, Snowfall, and Serene were more interested in talking about their family houses and picking at Glory’s Hufflepuff brother. “As if that mattered. He was still her big brother.”

She knew about houses that would ‘trim their family branches for dipping too low to the dirt’, but her grandmother wasn’t like that. Jambu was still a beloved family member to her, and Glory would hex anyone who dared insult him. Except for her, only she was allowed to call him prat. “Wonder if Tsunami’s family cuts off people if they get into Slytherin.” She wondered before falling asleep.

Was it a rude thing to think about? Probably. But Glory didn’t really care after the look Tsunami gave her at the sorting ceremony. “Sorry Clay, and Sunny, and Starflight. If Tsunami doesn’t want to sit with me, that’s not my problem.” She tried to reassure herself as she finished hearing the prefect, Iron (A rather kind student despite his house's reputation) telling the first years about how getting to breakfast worked.

Glory had already figured she’d have to sit with the Slytherin’s if Tsunami didn’t sit with the group. What else did she expect? “Side with the Gryffindor over the snake. Pretty common from what I hear.” She thought darkly, though the metamorphmagus didn’t even think she’d fit in with them . She didn’t care about blood purity or the dark arts…ok she cared about that second thing a bit, but not for any malicious means.

Glory despised the idea of actually using the dark arts on someone else. She knew her parents were tortured using it when she was just a baby. Her brother remembered a bit before they went crazy, but Glory only ever knew them as two strangers at Saint Mungo’s who called her “Jamby’s new friend.”

That was actually kind of wrong. Glory did want to use the torture curse on the monsters that did it to her parents. She lived with her grandmother for as long as she could remember but even with her, the closest she ever felt to the genuine warmth of a parent was when Jambu comforted her when she was scared during a thunderstorm years ago. He was a massive goofball who embarrassed Glory, but she couldn’t ask for a better brother.

She wanted to study the dark arts so she could learn ways to stop others from being hurt by them. How could you counter an imperious curse? How could you fix the mind after the torture curse? And how could you defend against the killing curse? These were some of her big questions, but there was also stuff like dementors. Fowl creatures made entirely of dark magic. The patronus charm worked, but it only repelled them. Glory wanted a way to destroy them completely, rid the world of the monsters who only want to suck the joy and happiness from others.

“Ok, maybe I do belong in Slytherin.” She laughed to herself as she walked down to breakfast. She ignored the Slytherin table and walked all the way down to the end where she found her group. Well, one person in the group. Starflight was sitting by himself at the end of the Hufflepuff table (The only table where a Slytherin and Gryffindor could sit together without being asked questions) and chewing on some bacon. She took her seat across from him as her hair changed to blue. “Hey, you’re up early.”

His head looked up from his food to show Glory that he, of course, was reading. He gave her a small nod then swallowed before speaking. “This place has amazing food. Much better than my dad at least.” He said.

Glory took one bite of sausage and knew he was right. Her family house elf was an amazing cook, but whatever chef they had here was even better than Nymt. “Sorry Nympt, I’ll buy you some new pajamas to make up for it.” Glory thought. The house elf was still pretty young and spent much of her weekends off in the courtyard. “So, are Clay and Sunny sitting with Tsunami?” Glory asked after finishing her bite.

She got an annoyed look from her friend who rubbed his head. “Don’t be like that. Some of the Hufflepuff’s were apparently led astray by Emerald the poltergeist.”

“And Tsunami?” She asked, avoiding her annoyance at his ‘don’t be like that’ comment. “I can be however I want.”

The Ravenclaw shrugged, propping his book better in his lap. “Don’t know. According to Orca, she likes to sleep in so she probably isn’t even up yet.”

Glory was more of a morning person herself, and she figured Starflight was as well. “So what’s your common room like?” Glory asked curiously, taking a drink of the pumpkin juice. “Ours is a fancy dungeon with a password.”

“We’ve got a tower, like Gryffendor. Though instead of a password, we get asked a riddle that we have to answer.” He said. Luckily for Glory, he had an answer for her obvious question. “If you don’t know the answer, you have to wait for someone who does. That way, you learn something new.”

Glory’s eyes rolled at this, feeling even more happy that she ended up where she did. “A password is just way simpler.” She said to Starflight’s groan. Just in time however, their two other companions finally made their way down the great hall and to the end of their house's table.

Clay led the way and took a seat beside Starflight, walking to the other side (Which was nice since they were at the very end). “Sorry that took us so long. This place has a poltergeist!” The muggleborn said with way too much excitement. Glory wished she could hold his same joyous amazement, but she was fairly used to this. “And the food here is great!” The boy said with excitement, taking a few biscuits.

“So is Tsunami still asleep?” Sunny asked, barely nibbling on her toast. “I mean she usually sleeps in but I figured her sister would wake her in time for breakfast.” She muttered.

Glory said, finishing her plate and waiting for her goblet to be refilled as Starflight shrugged. She tapped her fingers rhythmically as she saw the far end of the Gryffendor table talk with their first years. She remembered Coal and Rattlesnake asking her if she wanted to sit with them but she said she already had a group to sit with.

“She’s going to come over here.” Sunny said suddenly.

Glory looked over at her fellow pure blood and raised an eyebrow. “What?”

Sunny sat up a bit higher in her chair (Still the shortest person by a long shot). “You keep looking over at the other Gryffendor’s. I’m saying Tsunami’s going to be here.”

The Slytherin felt her teeth grind against each other as she sat back and looked up at the brilliant sky that the Hogwarts ceiling was known for. “Yeah.” She muttered, but Glory finally got the answer she expected when a cheer from the Gryffendor’s signaled some more first years. “Why do they have to be so noisy?”

And of course, the ocean blue haired ‘friend’ of the group took her seat beside her sister, about as far away from Glory and the others as she could. Her hair flashed red before she made it blue and green again, resting in her chair as she rolled her eyes.

The other four didn’t say anything about it, instead trying to look over what classes they had in common (Which Glory found rather pointless. All they needed to check was which classes they shared with another house). “Just don’t think about it. You knew Gryffendor’s were stuck up pricks.” She thought in annoyance and just listened to what the other three were saying, grabbing another piece of bacon. After a few minutes, she reached into her book and tried to find whether her first Defense against the dark arts class was with Starflight or if she was with Clay and Sunny. However when she checked she just narrowed her eyes. “Of course-”

“Hey, our first class is together!”

Glory (And the other’s) turned to see a familiar face planting herself beside Glory, leaving her in the middle (And herself at the head of the table essentially). Glory quickly shot a glare at Starflight who somehow looked even more smug. “Glad you remembered us.” Glory tried to joke, propping her head on her hand. “I figured you’d want to chat with your amazing new roommates.”

The other pureblood shrugged, rubbing her hands together before filling her plate. “Eh, I made a promise and I try to keep those.” She said, but Glory noticed a shift in her eyes when she stopped looking at her. She began chatting with Clay and Sunny about her dorm, the red crested tower sounding how Glory thought it would.

When Glory got her chance to speak again, she gave an innocent, albeit uncaring look. “So, have your opinions on Slytherin’s changed? Or are you still ophidiophobic?” Her foot tapped on the ground when Starflight spoke instead of Tsunami.

“It means ‘fear of snakes’.” He said to Clay who silently thanked him. Sunny also looked rather glad at the explanation.

It was clear the other three were trying to shift the conversation to something else, but Glory felt glad that Tsunami was as stubborn as her. “Everyone makes assumptions, and a part of being brave is admitting you were wrong.” Tsunami said, taking a bite of a sausage.

Sunny and Clay continued to discuss classes as Glory let out a light huff, going back to leaning back in her chair. “You’re a jerk.” She said without hesitation.

Tsunami turned in annoyance and even had a look of worry in her eyes before she saw her friend smiling. She then decided to play along, using her size to look a bit more intimidating. “And why’s that?”

“Because,” Glory said, resting her hands behind her head as she looked up at the ceiling/sky. “Now I feel like a jerk for thinking you weren’t going to show up.” She said simply.

Tsunami let out a small laugh, finishing her sausage before turning her body towards Glory. “So we’re even is what I’m hearing?” She asked, raising her fist.

Glory turned to look at her while she felt Clay, Sunny, and Starflight’s gances switching between her and Tsunami. She didn’t realize she had a bubbling anger that had suddenly just disappeared as she began talking to Tsunami. “Yeah, we’re even. For now.” She ended with a smirk and returned the fist bump.

The two girls let out a yelp in unison as Sunny forced the trio into a hug. “And you guys thought you wouldn’t get along!” She said, half excited, half relieved. Glory gave a mute “Get off” but couldn’t deny her friend’s joy was contagious.

When they were finally freed from their strong tiny friend, Glory felt way more relaxed. They talked about their upcoming classes and Tsunami said she was happy she wasn’t with Starflight since he’d make them sit up front, to which the boy flicked a small piece of bacon at her.

While their conversation changed once again to spells some of them already knew (Of course the muggleborn didn’t know anything yet despite living with Sunny for a bit), Glory just felt glad she had some people to hang out with. She was worried that she would end up like most Slytherin’s, just hanging out with your own house. But, here she was, seeing whether she, Starflight, or Tsunami could fix Starflight’s glasses the best after Clay cracked them (A small contest that for some reason, Starflight was happy to join in on).

“This is going to be a fun few years.” Glory thought happily.
