Sorting, Year One

Winter... A normal girl, Well. Not really when your parents are Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa Malfoy, Right?

Yep. That's Winter Malfoy. For you.

Yes, she also carries almost everything a Malfoy should have. Grey eyes, cunning, clever, gorgeous, but she has her mother's hair and blah blah blah.

It's inevitable, really.

She has already come of age, the age 11 for a matter of fact. It was time for the sorting ceremony and now she was in the middle of the big Great Hall, adorned with the house banners and everything.

She was waiting, in line. Beside her was the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff table, waiting patiently for the first years such as herself to get sorted in a house.

One by one, McGonagall would call them and place that rather old and dusty hat that she wished was sanitized well.

She waited and waited, each minute felt like an hour and then... "Winter...Malfoy." McGonagall calls.

Winter's heart thumped in excitement and nervousness, with each step she took towards that stool. She knows her life would change once she was sorted.

She can feel the other students eyes on her which didn't help her anxiousness, She could hear the shock and little murmurs about her having the last name, Malfoy.

Oh they knew where she will be, alright.

Winter sat on the stool, the hat slowly lifted and placed upon her head by the animagnus Professor.

"Ah... Another Malfoy, hmmm?" The hat spoke, learning and digging her past and traits. "I would immediately say Slytherin but girl, you're a unique one." It continued.

"Let's see..." The hat spoke, turning from side to side, determined to find the fitting house for her. Winter however, remained calm even if her head already has an internal turmoil.

She could see students eyeing her curiously. The Gryffindor's would not want her that's for a fact, the Hufflepuff's just waited and looked at her, The Ravenclaw's would notice small details and entertain themselves while she gets sorted, the Slytherin's had smirks or snarky comments about her.

"Can't this be any faster." she thought to herself as she stayed still, waiting for the sorting hat to make it's decision.

"Ah, I see... You carry loyalty to the Slytherins and your family, a Hufflepuff trait but you don't have their patience." it said, their voice carrying wisdom.

"You very much aren't afraid to face anything, brave like a Gryffindor yet not too brave for it anyways." It said, Winter rolled her eyes. Rude.

"I see, You value time and plan ahead like a Ravenclaw. But you aren't too knowledgeable for that house either." It chuckled, lowly. A chuckle for those stupid.

Very Rude!

"Ah, you're a true one. Yes, yes, I know." The hat chuckled and finally made it's decision.

"SLYTHERIN!"

The announcement echoed throughout the Great Hall, The Slytherins burst into cheers as the hat was lifted off from her head.

She made her way to the Slytherin table, earning congratulations and greetings as she did so. She could see the Gryffindors roll their eyes and such nasty things she hated.

She was glad that the other houses doesn't care and some even smiled. She sat down next to her brother, Draco Malfoy.

"Congratulations, Midget." Draco said, a smirk plastered on his lips as he ruffled her hair with care and tenderness. Unlike him.

But he was her sister. They share that bond. "Thank you, big brother." Winter smiled back, grateful.

"Knew you would end up here." Draco smirked before turning around to his clearly confused friends. "Oh right." He chuckled.

"This is my Little sister. Winter." He introduced her, the group of friends nodded in acknowledgement.

Draco then pointed to a girl, having jet-black hair that was short reaching her neck and pale skin. "Pansy Parkinson." He uttered. Scarlet.

The girl smiled and waved. Draco then pointed the boy, his skin chocolate black like, his hair also black and a bit messy for Winter's liking. "Blaise Zabini." Black.

The boy smiled, almost smirking. "And you already know Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle." Draco uttered, lazily pointing at the two. Orange and the dark shade of blue.

"Hey." She greeted, giving them a small smile.

She returned her focus back to the sorting, each one getting sorted. Some were a bit strange to her to say the least, there were names she certainly don't recognize.

Like Giselle Uchinaga, Ning Yizhuo, Hwang Yeji, Shin Ryujin and more. She doesn't really care as she would just roll her eyes when the Gryffindors would erupt in cheers once a new member would be sorted to their house.

Now, it came down to one more person. "Karina Yu." Professor McGonagall called. The girl, jet-black hair that was neatly tied up in two pigtails that fell to her shoulders. Childish.

Yu? Strange name.

She watched and observe as the girl made her way to the stool and sat down. The girl clenched her hands together, waiting in anticipation.

The Great Hall was silent, this was the last first year to be sorted and everyone was waiting, anticipating that they'd end up on their houses.

Finally, after the long awaited decision. The hat let a low chuckle, finally deciding his choice.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

The hat shouted, filling the silence of the Great Hall before the Gryffindor table erupted in cheers and whistles. The girl smiled as the hat was lifted off her head.

She stood up and gave a polite nod to the Professor, making her way to the Gryffindor table with a wide grin on her lips.

Well that's too bad. She and I would've been great friends. I guess she'll be a fun entertainment instead.

Winter smirked, her eyes never leaving the girl as the girl happily went and sat beside the other Gryffindors.

When the girl sat down, she looked up and had accidentally met Winter's gaze. Their gaze lingered for a moment, Winter really found this girl alluring.

They exchange a silent look before Dumbledore cleared his throat. Breaking the eye contact as Winter averted her gaze to the old Professor in front. Dumbledore chuckled, eyeing the all first years who have now been sorted into their respective houses.

"Before we begin the feast, I would like to Welcome our new first years." He smiles, his words always the knowledgeable. "Welcome students, Today onward, you will venture the ways of Hogwarts and it's teachings."

"I would love to see all of you make new friends, inside and outside of your houses. This year embarks a new year for everyone including us staff." He said, looking back to the staffs behind him and receiving smiles and nods.

He turns back in front of him, smiling. "Now, let the feast begin!" He said as each table was now adorned with different food including from big to little, sweet to bitter, drinks and dessert, and everything else.

The students cheered and began to dig in, filling their plates with different kind of foods and pastry they could get. Their glasses filled with either water, juice, tea or coffee.

Winter, her plate filled with half sweet and half beef, has been silently eating while her new found friends talk and eat at the same time.

'Honestly, didn't their parents teach them table manners?' she thought to herself, keeping her expression neutral as she ate.

They kept that situation until Professor Dumbledore had given his permission for each dismissal, heading them to their respective dorm.

Along those students was Winter, walking her way down towards the basement where their common room is located in. The current prefect in charge gave the password and everyone entered one by one.

The prefect gave them a quick tour of the place, where the kitchen, bathroom, living room, study room, where the giant squid is and even the small Library for Slytherins.

She was amazed, really. Her family didn't really tell her anything about the common room. Just some stupid stories about them and what they did.

Specifically speaking, Pranks, hex, spells, etc.

The prefect spoke, cutting through Winter's thoughts. "Alright first years, follow me. Your things will be on your dorms."

The prefect then instructed where they'd be living for the rest of the following year. The girls on the left and the boys on the right dorms. Winter could only roll her eyes as the other students excitedly made their way to their respective dorms.

Winter, obviously, made her way towards the left and started to wonder off. She entered the room the engraved her name and along with other people on the door. She's already expecting a roommate and she hopes this one won't be an idiot but to her utter suprise...

A bucket of water fell on her, getting herself wet and the bucket completely on her clothes to get soaked by the water. The bucket landing on her head. Completely blocking her vision as she clenched her fist. "..."

What a great way to greet your roommate.

Karina Yu, an outcast in her school for being different finds herself mingling with other witches and wizards alike in her new school.

How? Well, she didn't really know how but one thing she knows for certain is... She will be a witch.

Yes, a witch. At first, she thought her parents were just playing her and she didn't believe it. Until her mother, a muggle like her, showed her Karina her wand, funny, Karina thought that was just some random stick until her mother casted the very first spell she know.

Lumos.

She was amazed, astonished even though it quickly turned to curiosity. She asked her mother non-stop about the Wizardly world that day.

Her questions came from who thaught her mother that, what was it like, was there more, are there animals that talk there, does other creature exist, can I learn it? Her questions were endless. Her mother would laugh at her, then tell her everything she knew. From the small things to big. Karina was amazed.

She'd never knew that another world could exist, now this only heightened her curiousness of the world. She wants to explore everything. Unfortunately, Hogwarts hasn't sent her any letter of acceptance for the school when she has come of age.

That really broke her heart. She's been down all year, constantly just studying the books she's acquired from Diagon Ally when she begged her parents to take her there. Yeah, she has a tons of books. From spells to magical creatures.

She only actually found out that unicorn exist in the Wizardly world, she's been thinking about it non-stop and even rambling on and on to her parents about what she read. Her father would usually squirm uncomfortably when she would tell quite a fact.

Then one day, at a very cloudy day. She was in her room, off to studying more and more about the Wizardly world when her parents called her to come down. She sighed and closed her book, she made sure to leave a bookmark to it.

"Karina come on!" Her mother calls out, she huffed and hurried downstairs. Each step feeling heavy, she didn't know why though.

"Yeah?" She answered, now looking at her parents. Confused as she saw them with luggages, were they leaving? "What's up?" She said.

"Haven't you- oh, right." Her mother chuckles and took out her wand, Karina looked utterly confused. Clueless as her mother flicked her wand.

A suit case came down from the stairs, Karina looked at it as it was followed by various of her clothes that was neatly folded. Some of her favorite books came following and all of them going inside the suitcase.

"Eh?" Karina totally looked dumbfounded now, what was happening? Her clothes were now inside the suitcase, along with her other important things such as her books.

She took a step closer to her suitcase, finding it extending so her other things could fit. "Mom, what's happening?" She asked again, not catching up to anything.

"We're going to London." Karina's mother answered, smiling almost proudly.

"London?" Asked a confused Karina, taking a step closer to where her parents were and dragging along the now light suitcase that was filled with heavy things.

Karina knew it was magic but it also confused her, why would they have to go to London? "I'm not catching up. I don't understand..." She mumbles.

"We've got a letter, Darling." Her father answered with a smile, walking towards Karina and ruffling her hair affectionately. "You're accepted in Hogwarts." her father happily added, Karina's face was in mere shock and happiness.

"I got in?!" She exclaimed, her usual low tone pitching up at the slightest that made her parents cover their ears slightly and let out a hearty laugh as they nodded. "Oh my god! Wha-what are we waiting for, Mom and dad?!"

Her mother chuckled, "We aren't going because..." She pointed at Karina's current outfit, letting out a soft hum as she did so. "Get your coat." Her father instructed and Karina happily complied, squealing excitedly.

That was at least a week ago. Now she was sent to Hogwarts, skipping the part where she had to ride the train; that was boring and nothing else was going on there.

Now she was at the Great Hall, in between the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff tables. Waiting to be sorted in whichever house will that old hat give her.

She watched as other first years like her started to get sorted into different houses. One after another, each house would cheer when they get another addition to their house.

Her eyes would scan the room, the houses, she observed. Karina smiled, thinking that this was it, the day her life would take a complete 360°.

"Karina Yu." The old professor called, not even searching the place where first years were as she was the last.

Karina's heart thumped loudly in her chest, her eyes meeting the professor. She gulped, a sudden anticipation cursed through her. She walked up the stage.

Slowly walking and looking back at the professor, she seemed kind enough. Karina thought as she was gestured to sit down which she did obediently.

"My my, have I encountered such a soul."

The hat chuckled, the feeling vibration to tickle Karina's head. "Let's see. Ah, A Yu? Strange name your father has, Ms. Yu."

The hat pondered for a moment, looking from left to right. Searching and learning while Karina just grew more anxious with each seconds that passed.

The other students gaze wasn't helping either! Nor was anyone or anything for a matter of fact. She really can't wait to get this over with... "Please hurry, Mr. Hat." She mumbles.

The hat chuckled, a rich chuckle like as it was amused. "Impatient, are we? Not a Hufflepuff then." The hat says as he looks around, Karina's hands was clenched together. Tiny bids of sweat running down her neck.

"Hmm, I've made my decision." The hat smirked before speaking in a loud enough voice for anyone and everyone inside the room to know.

"GRYFFINDOR!" It screamed, Karina smiled excitedly as the hat was lifted of her head. She stood up and looked at where the Gryffindors were who was proudly clapping and wooing for her.

"Go to them." Professor McGonagall whispered softly which Karina nodded to and quickly made her way there. She smiled at the friendly people- no, witches and wizards, greeted her.

"Here, take a sit next to me!" A girl said and Karina complied, walking towards the girl and sitting down beside her. "Hi." She greeted.

"Hi! What's your name?" The girl asked with a small smile of her own. "Just call me Karina." She introduced, extending a hand to shake.

"Suits you well. I'm Yeji. Hwang Yeji." The girl, Yeji, smiled and shook Karina's hand. "Wanna be friends?" Yeji asked, hopeful to find her first friend.

Like Yeji, Karina also wanted her first friend here at Hogwarts. If not, here at London. "Of course." Karina chuckled and let go of the girl's hand.

"Great!" The girl smiled before someone else occupied the girl's attention. Karina smiled before checking out the other table from her seat.

She could see how the Hufflepuff's were more outgoing and sweet while the Ravenclaw's were quite quiet but still talking. Her eyes then landed to the Slytherin table.

And her eyes met another girl she couldn't recognize. The girl had a brunette kind of hair but also a mix of blonde in some of her locks.

Karina's eyes lingered on her, a sudden feeling of something she couldn't quite tell was settling inside of her.

Their eyes stayed glued together before the Professor Dumbledoor, if Karina got the name right, spoke. Quickly cutting the tension that was growing with each seconds that passed.

Karina listened as the Professor talked on and on before he announced for the feast to begin which Karina's eyes widen to.

The table were full of different dishes, from dessert to whatnot. She beamed and started to fill her plate like the other students.

She then started to eat, one by one was better than the last. Alright, her food back home was great but this was better. She could eat almost anything and everything... Well, of course not everything.

"So, where'd you come from?" Yeji asked, looking at Karina with a slight cream on her cheeks. Karina chuckled and wiped the cream away from her cheeks.

Yeji got embarrassed but ignored it. "I'm from South Korea." Karina answered. "Oh really?! Wow! Me too!" The girl exclaimed excitedly.

"Really? That's wonderful." Karina smiled, stuffing another sort of food inside her mouth. "We could go on and gossip in our own little Language and no one would know!" Yeji giggled.

"Mhm. We could." Karina chuckled.

A few more time passed and the Professor finally let the students go. Yeji and Karina stood up, following the other Gryffindor's like themselves to hallways after hallways.

Soon enough, Karina and her new friend was lead to many many stairs. Each one moving from another place to the other. It's fascinating, Karina thought as she followed the prefect.

"Meet the Fat Lady." The prefect introduced, the first years looked at the painting curiously. If every painting in this staircases moving, why was this one not?

Karina, even if her conscience told her not to go, leaned forward and watched intently.

"Why isn't—"

"Boo!" The portrait moved, scaring off poor little Karina. The Fat Lady pranked her!

Karina could only look at her with a scowl on her face while Yeji tries not to laugh at the hilarious scene in front of her.

The prefect shook his head and sighed. "Well she's had her fun." He said while the Fat Lady cackled and let the prefect inside once he said the password.

"That wasn't funny at all." Karina grumbled, following through the other Gryffindors.
