“Can you hear them”
“Can you hear them?” she whispered.
“Yes…yes I can” a low voice responded.
“They're getting closer…aren't they?” she murmured, hugging her legs.
The echoes of people screaming, the sound of whispering, the fear of dying and the adrenaline all getting stronger as the minutes passed. It had already been days since they had been forced to leave the comfort of their homes. The unknown evil that had taken over the outside had made it nearly impossible to do anything. The two had come upon each other by chance while trying to find a safe place to hide.
She had been scared at first…terrified actually. Not that it mattered. After all, everyone had been at some point in time, but she had put her trust in them. And they would never hurt or betray someone who had placed their trust in them. No they weren't like the others, they were different. An “omen” she had called them. She believed in them and they would not let her down. . . .
“It's time for me to go out, Elly,” the entity said, picking up the bags on the floor .
“I'll be back before noon, if I’m not, do not step out of this place, you hear me?”
“Alright…” Elly responded. “Stay safe”
Stepping out into the endless darkness they slowly crawled up the tunnel Elly and it had found. It was quite long but it was big enough for a person, or in this case entity to crawl through. A soft thud sounded behind them, Eli must’ve closed the door. Their mission today was to find enough food and water for Elly. They had run out of most of their rations about 4 days ago, the only thing Elly had been able to eat and drink was some leftover cracker packets she had stashed in her bag and the water bottle she had left. It didn't need food. After all, they were not human.
It along with the rest of it's kind fed on feelings and emotion. It's kind was not violent, in fact they were quite docile. It was not in their nature to harm others. That is until that happened. The sudden change in behavior, the outbursts, the thirst for murder. No one knew how or why it had happened, but it was too late to do anything. By the time they had registered what was happening, more than half of their population had been infected. Those that were sane ran, they found a willing human who would trust them and they hid. Ensuring that no harm was done to their human host, they protected them to the best of their abilities. After all, they were the key to their survival, the very reason for their existence.
The sight that greeted them when they stepped out of the hole was foul and disgusting. The dead bodies of children adults alike, and the unpleasant and nasty smell of rotting. The sun was setting, the sky was adorned with a scarlet color with hints of pink and yellow. Adjusting the bags they slumped one over their shoulder. Slowly they started to tread to the closest supermarket they could find. The electricity and power was still working, that was good. Filling up the bag it had brought along with as much canned and packaged food they could fit they ts of those that had died. Making sure to pay their respect as they walked. . . .
“Elly…Elly I’m here, open the door” the entity whispered.
She had been waiting for approximately 4 hours, the store closest to them was really far by foot. Carefully she peaked through the small hole she had made on their makeshift door, making sure it really was them. The entity had never told her it’s name, so she called them “Omen”.
“Oh, it's you,” she whispered back, “You gave me quite a fright.”
Slowly she opened the door, helping him with the things it held in its hands.
“How did it go?” she asked, “Anything new?”
She felt a small flicker of hope at the possibility of anyone she knew surviving.
“I didn't see any of them out, maybe they moved on. Better for us honestly.” Omen responded.
Unsatisfied with the answer, Elly sighed.
“Ah, that's good,” she said, defeated.
