History
The Fae were one of the beings that the Wizarding world in Britian was prejudiced against. The Unseelie were already the more violent and malicious of the Fae Folk but many of the prejudices and crimes against their kind doesn’t help their attitude. So if they go out and inflict some malicious actions and dangerous forms of mischief, they felt justified.
It happened to be the same for a young Fae whose True Name is known to few, but she went by the name of Pandora out in the human world. Pureblood Wizards were often the worst in terms of prejudice so for a rite of passage she decided to target a lone Pureblood whom would be an easy victim. In hindsight it wasn’t as the one she targeted was Xenophilius Lovegood. The residential Cloudcuckoolander.
Trying to get under his skin was difficult since he was either obvious or too loopy to care, and whatever happened to him only seemed to make him happy somehow. So Pandora decided to stop working from a distance and directly confront him. Only for Xeno to be completely friendly and welcoming, and through some means she found being invited to dinner. She didn’t know how he did that.
She could have moved on and target a Pureblood whom really deserved the torment, but she was prideful and didn’t want to be outdone by this kook. But the attempts were the same as before. Even when she thought she got his True Name, she found she had no power over him. He also talked about his animals he liked, and they match descriptions of beings that exist in the Fae realm only. Xeno clearly is the Wizard with a rare type of magical and spiritual sensitivity.
Pandora decided to stick around and learn more about this interesting man…not because she has started to find his insanity endearing or anything or because he’s a nice and polite guy and…whom was she kidding, she had found herself having fallen in love with the man, married him and had a child. To her little Luna was the best thing that happened to her since Xeno.
They lived as a happy family, with Xeno running his magazine, Selena disguised as the human witch Pandora Lovegood (née Lalune) doing spell research and Luna as their little Moonbeam. However, the Unseelie court would catch up. Pandora knew she had grown soft and forgotten her expectations and missions. She wanted to protect Xeno and Luna…but she couldn’t do it on her own. So she gave herself up in exchange for Xeno and Luna’s lives. Luckily she has given Luna a True Name which means that only she had the knowledge and others had no power over her. And if someone tried to do what she did to Xeno, they found it wouldn’t work either.
Pandora’s human self’s death was faked in an accident and Xeno was left to raise Luna. Luna seemingly never learned her true Fae heritage…but Luna has always been more observant and aware than people gave her credit for.
Luna would go to Hogwarts years later alongside her friend/neighbor Ginny Weasley. Ginny though was ready to ditch Luna to be more popular with her year mates (and some prompting from a cursed journal). To boot her airy and unusual demeanor made her the laughing stock of her dorm and a frequent target of bullying; Though having inherited her Dad’s demeanor she often let things go over her.
Harry found a lonely Luna one day without shoes. Luna worded it weird and like a Riddle but Harry knew she was being picked on and offered her friendship and protection. With help from Harry’s friend group her bullies got into a lot of trouble, became the victim of countless pranks and earned detentions galore. Luna was happy to have friends again. Though she still didn’t reconcile with Ginny, as the redhead felt too ashamed for her behavior.
Luna reconciled with Ginny after the Chamber of Secrets incident. Luna had always suspected something wrong with Ginny but Luna wasn’t taken seriously and even afterwards no one was sure what was going on. Luna is a sweetheart and she and Ginny were thick as thieves again.
Later on Luna joined a polycule with Hermione and Harry by the time of their fourth year. The relationship is loving but it is also…interesting when Luna Lovegood is involved.
Powers and abilities
Luna is a decently talented witch for her age. Especially with Harry’s dueling tutoring and her own intelligence she is able to keep up with her friends despite being a year below. Due to her weird and unpredictable nature, opponents can’t anticipate her and hence it throws their spellwork of.
She does decently well at most of her subject, but her specialty appears to be Beast magic. She knows a lot of about magical beings and creatures, able to sense their emotions and some stray thoughts and able to calm and tame them, even if she never had seen the creature before. It also works on most non magical beasts. She snuck into the animal’s enclosures at the zoo multiple times and the animals didn’t harm her. She was able to tame a hippo like a dog and play fetch, played cards with gorilla’s and rode on the back of an elephant and giraffe. Less said about the penguins, the better.
Due to her fae heritage she has some spiritual sensitivity. She is able to see into other realms and sees beings native to them, making the Snorcacks and the Nargles and such she talks about real beings, but most others can’t see them without assistance.
She is not a true Seer, but she has a sort of spiritual warning system, knowing when something bad or good is going to happen.
Her mind is also mysterious and complex, and she has proven to be able to resist mind-altering or mind-controlling magics, she doesn’t even seem to feel them. The last person whom tried to use Legilimency on her was left on the ground with a headache. She herself is also quite apt with the mind arts, and the best at Legilimency and similar arts.
She has some other fae powers, such as being able to control people if she knows their True Name, but she never uses that. She thinks it’d be bad taste. She can collect names of people though and put them under her power and protection so other Fae can’t claim them.
She is also skilled with Glamour or magics that alter perception, casting illusions that are realistic since they can target all five senses of a person.
Fae’s also have elemental prowess, and Luna’s appear to be, aptly, moonlight. She becomes more powerful in it. She also can enhance the moonlight cast upon a potion which is useful for potion ingredients that need a particular lunar phase, but she can emulate those on her own. It also allows her to weaken other moon-reliant beings like Werewolves, but isn’t powerful enough to fully block them from moonlight yet. She can also manifest the moonlight offensively as a blue fire/Plasma like substance called Moonfire.
Appearance
Luna appears as her usual self from canon with pale skin, blonde hair and dreamy blue-gray eyes.
She hasn’t assumed a full Fae-form yet but she can assume an in-between stage in which she is taller, with more rodent-like features, wilder hair, longer and gangly limbs and while not horror, is uncanny. It is not even known if it is her full fae form or a strong glamor.
She can assume a ‘travel mode’, resembling more classical faerie despictions in which she is a few inches tall, has lunamoth-like wings and electric blue accents to her hair. She also becomes more manic and mischievous in this form.
Trivia
- Like her actress Evanna Lynch she has an Irish accent.
- Her fav food is pudding. Any type of pudding. Don’t get in between her and her pudding.
- She and Hermione got off on the wrong foot due to Hermione’s reliance on book facts and believing in the tangible. She was quick to apologize when proven wrong. Luna holds no grudges, but she likes to tease Hermione with nonsensical stuff, sometimes playing it up because she thinks Hermione looks cute when annoyed.
- She has no filter when speaking, always says what’s on her mind. Things get really awkward when they start experimenting and she isn’t shy about her future sex life.
- She found a way to manifest a Snorcack outside of the Fae realm and she has it as a pet. She calls it Moon Unit Phelony Spicy. Or Mups for short. She wanted to call her Pineapple but she thought that name would be too silly. A Snorcack appears as a rabbit-like creature with short ears, no visible feet under its long-furred body, small cute fangs and crumpled horns.
- She trains herself with riddles constantly. She hopes to one day be clever enough to trick the Unseelie’s leader in revealing his true name and force him to give back her mother. She may be able to pull it off too.
- She takes Care for Magical Creatures, Runes and Divination as classes in third year. She hopes to one day one-up Newt Scamader’s zoo trunk where he keeps his beings, by creating a coat with pockets that have pocketspaces for her animals so she can carry them around all the time.
