Chapter 5
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the span of less than one second, Deb's gone from keeping her cool so well in the face of Gina's impromptu private concert that she'd actually managed to derail it, back to being completely at the giddy mercy of Gina's actions. Gina’s lips are gentle and soft and not at all like what Deb would have figured (and maybe had already imagined) they’d feel like against hers. Her brain doesn’t quite know how to react; her body starts reacting anyways. She takes Gina’s irritatingly perfect face in her hands, and she kisses Gina back, kisses her back hard. Gina goes from holding Deb’s waist to wrapping her arms around her; she bites Deb’s lip, Deb inhales sharply and shakily, and then Gina’s tongue is in her mouth, and Deb’s knees are going weak.
The glass doors rattle behind her as Gina pushes her up against them. The roughness of it makes Deb’s insides blister with so much desire it's almost frightening. Her arms slide around Gina's shoulders, she tangles her fingers in Gina's soft blonde hair, and she tastes her, feels her everywhere, wonders how it's possible she's spent so long being too stubborn and bitter to admit how attractive Gina's always been to her, even before she saw and heard her sing. She’s truly aching for this girl like she’s never ached for anything in her life, and she so badly wants to keep going, yet the second Gina’s thigh starts pressing its way between her legs, Deb finds herself pushing her away.
They’re both panting as they stare at each other. Gina’s face, neck and chest are flushed pink. The lipstick on her perfectly pouty lips has been kissed away. Deb runs her thumb over Gina’s collarbone, reluctant to remove her hands from where they're resting on Gina’s shoulders.
“What is it?” Gina breathes. Deb’s never seen this expression on her face before, has never heard her with this tone in her voice; Gina seems nervous.
“Nothing,” Deb replies, “nothing, I just…”
She searches for the words, finding it hard to focus on speaking when she’s still so flustered, is still reeling because she and Gina were just making out, hard, and she and Gina almost just-
“I haven’t done any of this before,” Deb admits.
Gina blinks at her. Deb feels exposed, feels vulnerable because she is, briefly worries that she’s just somehow majorly messed this whole weird thing up; but the corners of Gina’s lips quirk up, and the tone of her voice is now genuinely curious as she asks,
“are you a virgin?”
Deb sighs, and she nods her head yes. She was probably already blushing anyways but by now she must be as red as a beet. She has a hard time re-meeting Gina’s eyes after her admission; when she does, she can’t look away. Gina’s grinning at her. It’s a gentle grin.
“That’s okay,” Gina murmurs. “We don’t have to-”
“I want to, though,” Deb clarifies, clarifies desperately.
She thinks she feels Gina quiver.
“Me too,” Gina whispers, and she leans in, and she kisses Deb again. And this time it’s chaste, but it’s still ridiculously charged, and Deb just barely saves herself from whimpering.
Her heart is hammering in her chest when they pull back apart, “maybe we should… hang out?”
It hangs in the air between them for a moment. Then Gina starts laughing, and Deb, finally considering the absurdity of it all, starts laughing with her.
“Yeah, let’s hang out,” Gina giggles, and Deb swoons as Gina grabs her hand and kisses the back of it. “Are you busy after work?”
“Not at all,” Deb replies breathlessly.
“You are now, then.” Gina takes Deb’s other hand and dances loosely to the Sinead O’Connor that’s still playing around them. She swiftly pulls Deb closer, and she whispers in her ear, “never thought I'd be telling you this, but you're such a good kisser.”
Deb’s too dumbfounded now to even try to find the beat and keep dancing. And she doesn't have to, because a knock at the glass door behind her makes her practically jump out of her skin, and Gina laughs at her as she whirls around to find a group of three people outside the store, looking at them. One of them mouths the words, 'you guys open?', and Gina chuckles and fishes the keys out of Deb's pocket so that she can unlock the store again. Deb begins to feel slightly mortified as she realizes that their little makeout session just now definitely would have been highly visible to anyone who might've been passing by- it also hits her that she just very nearly let Gina start dry-humping her not only in front of fully-transparent glass doors, but also while inside Empire Records. She should actually be entirely mortified, but as Gina opens the doors, lets the customers in and smiles at Deb as she tells them,
"sorry, guys, we were just taking a little break- this one's been working way too hard,"
Deb remembers they're hanging out after work, and stops caring about anything else.
