The First Glance
It was a sunny day, one that Remus loved very much as the warm sun soaked into his skin before he disappeared inside to his new dorm. Boxes surrounded him as he started to unpack his belongings at his university, Hogwarts. Hogwarts was a prestigious school, one of the best in Britain, known for successful students and rich families. However, Remus was different, he was neither rich or truly successful, he had the smarts but lacked the funding to see his dream come true. He was only attending Hogwarts because he gained a scholarship from its headmaster after his situation came to light, Remus was abandoned by his family once it was discovered he harbored an illness of the mind, thoughts so twisted that they would not go near him. Of course Dumbledore didn't know about that part, Remus played the part of a sad abandoned child well, he had for most of his life, but he appealed to Dumbledore's sympathy when he revealed to him his family kicked him out because he was a homosexual. Of course he was but his family didn't know when they left him.
He was almost finished unpacking when an urge to go look out the window overtook him. The curtains were pulled back and the window was open for airflow, he had a perfect view of the courtyard. Eyes scanned the greenery, watching, looking at the people before they fell on a man, his hair was black as midnight and his eyes were grey like steel. He was of slender body but still nicely proportioned so it complimented him, the light hit him just right, like he was a god as it haloed around him. Remus wanted this man, he wanted to possess and hold him, keep him away for only his eyes but it was too soon, he didn't know him yet but he would.
His first dinner was an awkward event, Dumbledore called him up front to introduce him to the student body before releasing him to the wolves. He tried to find a seat near the angelic man, in a chance to finally chat with him, but all the seats were taken, pushing him further and further down till he was sat with the least of the least popular. By the end of dinner 3 people had passed him, probably some popular freshmen looking for some fame, each dumping something else on him, the first a glass of cranberry juice, the second some potatoes, and the third a bit of green bean, some getting stuck on his glasses. Each ran away snickering but for someone yelled at them to knock it off. He made the long walk back to his dorm, the cool summer air chilling the cranberry juice. He made it back eventually, ripping off his clothes to toss them into his hamper and jumping into the shower to wash off the food. He got out, toweling off, before slipping into his pjs, a faded band shirt and soft shorts, before setting his alarm and drifting off to sleep.
Remus spent his days in between the library, the kitchen, and his classes. He never stayed near anyone, and didn't really want to make friends after that first night. He would usually skip large meals in favor of just going to the kitchens to hang out with Mimsy, an older woman with a soft spot for kids, and Bitsy, Mimsy's daughter and a strange woman but still a delight to spend time with. They would save a plate for him and as a small surprise, a piece of dark chocolate. He would chat with them about school, life, and books. Bitsy would tell tales about her friends, mostly the weird situations she got into, especially when she went to Alexander Hamiltoad's house, and her peanut allergy.
Weeks passed, Remus would watch him, secretly of course, as he went through his life and classes, Remus learned his name was Sirius and he would ride his bike, a black and red monstrosity covered in band stickers, around to different classes taking the same path everyday. It was nice to look out his window and see Sirius shining in the early morning sun as he biked past and life went on. Remus threw himself more into his studies, trying to become useful and maybe even successful. He would take to doing people's class work for some cash, enough to buy a drink at the pub. Sometimes catching glances with Sirius and his friends across the pub but nothing ever drew him over. Eventually he was content in just looking, not touching for now.
Summer holidays came and went for Remus and those at Hogwarts. It wasn't too hard to fall back into the rhythm of school, books, and watching from afar. This time when Remus actually looked at Sirius's friends, a face was missing, a mousy haired boy, a little on the larger side, with dull brown eyes and dirty blond hair. He wasn't with Sirius anymore, not hanging onto his every word, it was like he vanished. It was a random Tuesday when he figured out where the mousey boy went. Remus was kicked out of the kitchen by Bitsy and her somewhat disastrous baking skills to eat in the main hall, after he grabbed a quick salad with chicken and found a seat near a corner with a good view of the student body did he see him. He was sat at the end as well surrounded by the outcasts but none would talk with him. It was obvious why they avoided him, probably someone getting too high and mighty then falling from grace back to the wolves who wouldn't take him back, it was laughable even. Humans can be so silly sometimes but with a new space open in the group, maybe Remus had a chance now, maybe it was time to start making moves.
