A Bike Ride Away
Remus sat on his bed with papers strewn around his room as he scribbled, trying to think of a plan but failing. He knew that Sirius wouldn't pay attention to just anyone, they had to be a charity case in some way, relying on him for popularity and money to get by, he seemed to have a bit of a savior complex and liked someone being a doormat to his ways, pleasing him at every corner. He was called to the window by an unseen being, look, his mind whispered to him, see, it called. Remus peered out of his window into the golden light of the morning sun to see Sirius riding his bike along the path and an idea struck.
After his morning classes were finished, only 2 going from 7:30 to 11:00, he stopped by the kitchen to say hello to Bitsy and Mimsy before heading off into town. Mimsy insisted he take a sandwich or she wouldn't allow him back for dinner and he reluctantly agreed, taking the wrapped ham and cheese sandwich then running off. He arrived in Hogsmeade quite quickly as it was only a 10 minute walk from campus and started looking for a bike shop. He walked the streets lined with fluffy trees and flower bushes glancing at the stores as he passed. He noted Honeydukes might be a good place to buy some chocolate and small gifts for Mimsy and Bitsy as a sweet aroma wafted from the open door showing a shop full of shiny treats. The 3 broomsticks was as busy as ever but Remus enjoyed going there on days when he had enough money to buy a drink to people watching, by people watching it was usually just Sirius.
The bike shop was easy to locate after walking around the busy town streets from the bikes shown in the front windows. He walked in, looking around at the selection before heading up to the cash register with an unassuming bike, a deep teal, and rented it for the month. He thanked the cashier and walked out with his newly rented bike in hand. Remus got on and started to peddle down the busy streets back to the castle. At first it was difficult but his memories of riding as a child kicked in and soon enough he was flying down the streets.
With the new bike came many possibilities. Remus started riding in the mornings, especially ones where he would wake long before he had to. He would pass Sirius sometimes, they would glance at each other giving a friendly wave or smile before they continued on their routines. Mimsy noticed the new bike and was proud that Remus was getting exercise and not shutting himself up in the library for hours on end. Sometimes during breaks he would run errands for the kitchen getting supplies that Bitsy forgot to grab during the weekly shopping.
Remus rode often enough that he bought the bike making it his. Surprisingly during one of his rides he noticed Sirius standing with his bike talking to a student on the grass. He got off the bike before walking up to the pair. Sirius turned and made eye contact with Remus before going into a long winded rant about people not liking bikes and trying to kill him. He had to refrain from laughing at how Sirius's face would scrunch up but eventually Sirius got to the root of the issue. Someone had popped his front tire, he didn't notice till much later in his ride when he started to lose control of the bike. Remus was quick to offer up his own bike as Sirius complained about missing his class. Sirius peddled off after shouting a quick thank you and you're a lifesaver before Remus was left to take his bike to the bike shed.
He walked the bike back to the shed before he pulled a spare tire he had bought before popping Sirius's tire earlier that morning, during those hours before the sun had broken the dark sky. No one truly paid attention to the bikes, most were rusted and unused so it was fairly easy to pop a tire and act as a savior. The web had been spun and it was only a matter of time before Sirius was tangled up in it.
