Reaching For You
After a daring mission and defeating their foe….again, our team of heroes were heading home. As this took a much longer journey, they took a couple days to rest and see the sights of a small town. Their festive celebrations of the harvest moon were at its peak. Tails was involved with the history of the town. Knuckles enjoyed partaking in the many events that required strength and focus. Rouge went around to find the most exquisite treasure (with Knuckles also keeping her in check from any theft).
Whilst Amy took in the culture the music and the dances as Sonic just enjoyed everything in the present moment. Though couldn’t help but admire his hammer swinging, compassionate hearted friend from afar. Just watching her dance and move so freely was inspiring to see. Even if she would debate how weird and silly she looked dancing. He shrugged off the imaginary prediction with adoring the view of her just being herself.
That evening, the gang went to rest up in a nearby inn. Recounting tales of their adventure and what they did earlier. At the clock striking a late hour, Amy’s face briefly fell into one of fear and worry. Before Sonic could ask, she blinked and seemed to be back to her usual self as everyone said their ‘good nights’ heading towards their rooms. Still something didn’t seem right to him. Laying in bed, he glanced out at the starry skies. Wanting to check up on her.
Getting off the bed walked towards the door that joined the rooms one right after another. A feature only for large parties who also wished for privacy. Hesitating only slightly as it was late and she was most likely asleep, gave a couple soft knocks. Silence fell as he reached out to try once again, just dropped his hand at his side. Turned to walk away when his ear twitched at the sound of a familiar yet slightly distressing noise.
Leaning against the door he could hear it a bit louder. It sounded like she was crying and her breathing shaken. Unable to leave her in this state, gave a few louder knocks allowing seconds to pass before heading inside.
“Amy?” He called out before his eyes widened at the sight of her in the bed. Tossing and turning and obviously having a nightmare.
“No…please Gaia no!” Her voice cracked in a desperate plea. “No!” She shouted before instantly sitting up in bed, arm outstretched as if she was reaching for something. Breathing ragged and tears kept rolling down her cheeks.
“Amy! Amy it’s okay.” He soothed in hushed tones, gently placing his hands upon her shoulders. “You’re safe Amy, I promise.”
“S-Sonic?” Glancing up at him briefly before turning away.
“It’s alright Ames, I’m here.”
“This curse…so many faces…our friends….gone-” Breaking out in another fit of sobs. “I-I’m sorry to wake you.”
“I was already awake.” Sitting on the edge of the bed, gently embraced her from behind. Helping her breathe and calm down at her pace. Slowly pulling her closer, guiding her head against his chest.
“Listen to my heartbeat. That’s it.” Once again that soothing tone was like a warm blanket. The rhythmic beat to her intake of breath was just the thing she needed. They stayed liked this for awhile until Amy pulled away slightly embarrassed.
“I-I’m sorry.”
“No need to apologize. Would you like me to leave you alone- oh okay okay it’s alright I won’t” He chuckled slightly at her immediate head shake of the negative connotation. “You don’t have to tell me anything. Just breathe and stay right here in my arms. I promise nothing bad will happen.”
Amy nodded before both leaned back laying on the bed. Sonic pulling the covers upon them both. Running a hand over her soft quills as she eventually told her story of these nightmares she’s had in the past. Sonic wished he could protect her in those tormented dreams. But Amy insisted that him being like this for her was more than enough.
They kept the conversation light for a bit as he ran his hand against her quills and back. Whilst she gently traced small circles on his shoulder and chest. He cracked a joke or two that she added her own spin on. At some point heard her voice less and less until he felt a rhythmic breathing coming from her. Glancing at her sleeping form, smirked before looking back at the stars.
They seemed to be twinkling brighter than before this evening.
“I promise, you’re safe with me Amy.” He whispered before allowing himself to fall asleep as well.
