Lily Evans
“Oi Evans!” Comes from across the cafeteria, Lily whips her head around her light red hair falling in her eyes as she does.
“Piss off Crouch!” She yells back, rolling her eyes as she turns back around.
She hears him snickering in the background as she takes her place at the gryffindor table. Marlene and Mary are eating beside her, talking every now and then. She’s finally at peace for a moment, when she hears that voice, that irritating voice.
“Alright Evans?” A voice says as it slides into the seat next to her.
“Alright Potter,” Lily says through gritted teeth, she had a headache from a late night studying for her O.W.L.S. and wasn’t in the mood for his antics today.
Across the table Mary’s giggling and whispering to Marlene, who looks almost as fed up with this nonsense as Lily. Lily turns back to her food casting a glance up at Marlene as if to say ‘Help me.’
Marlene eyes widen slightly, registering that she has to come up with something to say, “Uh— James, what do you think of our new seeker?”
Lily silently praises Marlene, nothing would keep James talking longer than quidditch would.
“Oh Merlin don’t get me started,” James sighs, “Did you see his flying? He couldn’t keep up with our beaters! He’s hardly fit be a seeker.”
“Right?! I saw that too, even Mary would make a better seeker than him!”
“Oi!”
“Sorry Mary!” Marlene chuckles along with James, “But you have to admit you’re pretty shit at it.”
The dark haired girl just huffs at her friend, crossing her arms and tuning back to her food with a frown. Lily knows she’ll get over it, Mary never takes these things to heart.
After a moment she starts to tune them out, picking at her food as she does. She starts drifting into sleep, dosing off on her hand. She knows she’s a snorer, but she can’t help it, Lily begins dreaming. Suddenly, she’s back in her house, her mom sits by the fireplace working on her knitting, she always liked to tease her for that. Her dad is in the kitchen reading the morning paper, his favorite section, sports. “Petunia…?” And Petunia, her sister, she sits next to her mother, but she doesn’t look like herself. The image of her starts morphing? She’s twisting and turning her body cracking into places as her bones stretch and her face contorts, cries of pain come from grotesque form.
“Help her!” She screams at her parents, but no sound comes out.
She tries to move, her feet are stuck to the ground, “Petunia!” She cries out, tears streaming down her face, “No!”
Everything around her is frozen except her sister, her dear sister, writhing in agony only a few feet away, while she watches unable to help ease the pain. She reaches back to grab the banister, to steady herself, sinking down the wall she screams and cries as her sister is changing slowly her features becoming unrecognizable as she becomes a version of their mother. Petunia lets out a final shriek as her bones snap into place and Lily wakes with a start.
Lily lets out a gasp as she practically jumps up in her seat, “Lily are you okay?”
She’s shaking slightly as she moves herself away from the hand placed trying to be comforting on her back by James, “Yeah, yeah I’m fine Mary…”
She takes deep breathes in and out as she looks around herself reminding her of where she is, she isn’t at home, her sister is okay. She wishes she could say her sister isn’t like her mother, maybe she isn’t morphing into her in some dark and twisted way, but she is… becoming her.
“Hey Marls, wanna uh- head to astronomy?” She asks a look of desperation in her eyes.
“Mhm,” She says through a mouth full of eggs, shoveling more in as she stands.
The two of them walk out of the great hall together in silence, Lily still shaking until they reach the corridor, trying to steady herself with the small stack of books she carries.
“It happened again,” She says under her breath to Marlene while they walk.
“Oh Lils… do you need to sit down?” The blonde girl responds, sympathetically.
“No,” She says taking a shaky breath out, “No, I just… needed to tell you.”
Marlene stares at her in that stupid way that makes her feel like she needs to be fixed.
“I am fine Marlene,” Dragging out her words for emphasis, “Just, leave it.”
Marlene sighs, simultaneously blowing a strand of bleach blonde hair from her eyes, “Whatever Lils, be careful though.”
Lily just shrugs, they continue on to their classes, divination first. She straightens her tie and smooths her hair before going in, not wanting to appear a mess first thing in the morning. She sighs as she enters, ‘Why must I sit next to Barty?’
She curses fate for it every day. She patiently sits through the class, although next to Barty it’s like having to babysit a toddler that doesn’t know how to control itself.
“Would you stop that,” She says through gritted teeth to Barty, who is tap his fingers on the back of her chair, “And get away from my chair!” Lily whisper shouts.
“I’m sure you’d like that Evans,” He says with that damn smirk, the bane of her existence, god she hates that smirk.
“Ugh!” She exclaims, a tad louder than preferred.
“Ms Evans!” Professor Madeana reprimands, “Do you have something you care to share with the class?”
“No- no Ma’am,” A sharp glance cast to her side.
She hears Barty let out a quiet, snorting laugh, attracting their professors attention as well, “And you, Mr Crouch?”
He’s fighting laughter as he answers, “Mmm-mm,” as he shakes his head.
She mutters to herself before returning to her lesson and Barty lets out a softer laugh, turning to Lily as he does.
“God you’re an arse,” She mumbles, trying to turn to her work.
“I bet you find me charming, you’re just too much of a prig to admit it,” And those ice cold eyes watching her.
“Pfft-“
“Oh, don’t be shy now Evans, join my list of fans,” He says grinning as he leans back in his chair, so smugly as always, “I won’t mind one more.”
“I’d rather kiss the giant squid than join any kind of fan group of yours,” Lily scoffs, trying to turn back to her work
“Hmm, we’ll see,” He sends a wink in her direction as she huffs and turns back to the board.
‘No we won’t see’, She thinks angrily.
