Chapter 12

The next morning, Isagi barely had time to process what had happened in the Forbidden Forest before the rumors started.

As soon as he entered the Great Hall for breakfast, a wave of hushed voices and not-so-subtle glances followed him to the Gryffindor table. Whispers floated around him, some exaggerated beyond belief.

“I heard Isagi and Shidou fought off a whole nest of acromantulas.”  Wait that was what it was called?

“No, I heard Isagi tamed the acromantula with some secret spell!”  If only Reo heard that, then i wouldve let that one slide.

“Apparently, Shidou wanted to fight it for fun, and Isagi had to hold him back.”  At least someone said it right.

“Wait, didn’t Hagrid have to rescue them?”

Isagi groaned, rubbing his temples. The truth was far less dramatic. The acromantula had been a lone scout, not a nest. It had been aggressive, but Hagrid had stepped in before things could escalate into a full-blown disaster. Sure, Isagi and Shidou had cast a few spells to hold it off, but it wasn’t like they had heroically defeated it.

Across the table, Bachira leaned in with an eager grin. “So
how much of it is true?”

Chigiri smirked. “Knowing Shidou, I bet he did something completely reckless.”

“You have no idea,” Isagi muttered, stabbing his toast with his fork.

Bachira laughed. “Man, you’re getting famous. Not every day someone gets into *that* kind of trouble.”

“I didn’t get into trouble. He did,” Isagi corrected. “I was just stuck with him.”

“Oh, come on,” Bachira teased. “Admit it—you kinda liked the chaos.”

Isagi scowled

———

After breakfast, Isagi hurried off to Charms, where Professor Flitwick had prepared an advanced lesson on dueling theory.

“As wizards,” Flitwick began in his high-pitched yet commanding voice, “understanding spellwork is only half the battle. The way you  use magic in a fast-paced setting is just as important. Today, we will be practicing counter-spells.”

Isagi’s mind instantly flashed back to his duel with Shidou. A lesson on counter-spells? He could definitely use this.

The class paired up, and to Isagi’s mild relief, he was with Chigiri this time instead of another chaotic individual.

“We’ll start with Expelliarmus and its counters,” Flitwick instructed. “One partner will cast it, the other will attempt to block or resist it.”

Chigiri smirked. “Ready to get disarmed, Isagi?”

“Try me,” Isagi shot back.

Chigiri flicked his wand. “Expelliarmus!”

Isagi barely had time to react. He casted Protego, but Chigiri’s spell was faster, knocking his wand straight out of his hand.

“Oops,” Chigiri teased. “Guess you need to be quicker.”

Isagi picked up his wand, gritting his teeth. He hated losing . “Again.”

This time, when Chigiri cast Expelliarmus, Isagi focused, moving faster. His wand sparked as he cast Protego just in time. The spell clashed against his shield, fizzling out.

Chigiri nodded approvingly. “Better.”

They continued practicing, trading spells back and forth. The duel with Shidou had sharpened Isagi’s reflexes, and for once, he felt like he was truly improving.

After class, Isagi was heading to lunch when he spotted Rin standing near the staircase, arms crossed as he listened to a group of Ravenclaws whispering nearby. He already knew what they were talking about.

Isagi sighed. “Let me guess, you’ve heard the stories?”

Rin turned his cold gaze on him. “You’re an idiot.”

“Excuse me?”

“You and Shidou,” Rin continued, tone as sharp as ever. “I don’t know what’s worse—the fact that you got into that mess, or the fact that people think you actually won against an acromantula.”

“I never said I won,” Isagi muttered. “People just like to talk.”

“Tch.” Rin narrowed his eyes. “If you really want to prove something, stop playing around and actually *get stronger*.”

The words stung more than Isagi wanted to admit.

Before he could respond, Rin walked off.

Bachira suddenly popped up behind him. “Oof. That was harsh.”

Isagi clenched his jaw. Maybe Rin had a point. If he wanted to be taken seriously—not just as the guy who survived a detention with Shidou—he had to be better.

And he knew exactly how to start.
