It was the final show, the final show Regulus would ever play, he had been in the band for 10 years, since he was 15. He had been terminal for the past 3, despite all the money, and prayers and sorrow in the world there was nothing that could make him cancer free. Instead of shutting down or destroying his body with chemo Regulus decided to take his death into his own hands. He chose to continue the final years of his life as if nothing went wrong hoping some miracle or another would save him. Yet it was February 5th 2025, the last night of the stars world tour and last night Regulus would ever play Infront of an audience.
The last song of the setlist approached, a duet between him and his boyfriend, if we were vampires.
The song began the stage went dark, mikes lifted and suddenly it didn’t matter that this was his last night, it didn’t matter that there were thousands of people in the crowd waiting for the song with anticipation and tears in their eyes. All he could see was James. All there was, was James. For the very last time it was him and his love, just them.
James began
It’s not the long flowing dress that you’re in
Regulus’s mind was a haze, and he took himself back to when he was 15 and told James he was trans, terrified to death that he would lose his best friend, and biggest crush. But instead of getting mad and leaving James Heald Regulus Softley as he weeped and after helped turn his “favorite” white dress into a pair of dress shirt and trousers.
He continued
It’s not the way you talk me off the roof
Regulus took himself back to 2 years ago, his condition was getting worse, and James was feeling the effects. On a terrifying night he saw his love sitting at the edge of the roof on top of their building. James weeped and broke down on how he felt knowing he was going to lose Regulus and how sorry he was that he was breaking because, “I can’t even imagine what you’re going through love,”. But Regulus was not mad, he understood his boyfriends’ feelings intimately well. So, he held James, held him and kissed him and whispered sweet nothings into his ear until he was ready to come away from the edge.
The chorus began
It’s knowing that this can’t go on forever
Their eyes meet
It’s likely on of us will have to spend some days alone
James averted his eyes, tears flooded Regulus’
Maby we’ll get 40 years together
One day, i’ll be gone, one day, you’ll be gone
Regulus let go of the breath he was holding as he lifted the mike
If we were vampires and death was a joke
How he wishes they were how he wishes they had eternity together
We’d go out on the sidewalk and smoke
His mind goes to the nights after every show on their first world tour where he and james would share a cigarette in utter silence marveling at the way their lives turned out
And i laugh at all the lovers and their plans
He walks up to James
I wouldn’t feel the need to hold your hand
And intertwines their fingers, gripping tight he sings the chorus
It’s knowing that this can’t go on forever
It’s likely on of us will have to spend some days alone
Maby we’ll get 40 years together
One day, i’ll be gone, one day, you’ll be gone
They are now both crying as they sing the song, the song they wrote the night Regulus got told he was terminal, the very night that wishing aside they knew they were on begged and borrowed time. The final chorus comes up and they sing together, for the final time
It’s knowing that this can’t go on forever
It’s likely on of us will have to spend some days alone
Maby we’ll get 40 years together
One day, i’ll be gone, one day, you’ll be gone
The music stops, both boys are in tears, regulus’s knees hit the ground but before he can make contact he feels James arms wrap around his waist and lower him to the ground.
Maby we’ll get 40 years together
One day, i’ll be gone, one day, you’ll be gone
Rubbing the tears of each others face, Regulus pulls James in for a deep kiss, savouring every moment he gets to have.
