Draco had always been raised to stay in line, he was taught to obey all of his parents’ wishes and do as he was told, however one thing he couldn’t stand no matter how much his Father tried to beat it out of him was people going through his things. Draco hated having his space violated which is probably why he had such a harsh reaction when he woke up to find Harry reading the letter that his father had sent to him that morning.
“What the actual fuck are you doing!?” Draco yelled as he snatched the letter out of Harry’s hands. “Look, Draco, I didn’t mean to. I didn’t have my glasses on and I just grabbed the first letter I saw.” Harry explained, standing up from his desk quickly and meeting Draco’s harsh gaze. “Even if you opened it by accident, which I highly doubt, why would you read it once you realized it was mine?!” Draco shouted. Harry rubbed his neck nervously and looked at the ground. “Well, I was kind of curious… I guess.” Harry explained sheepishly. “It wasn’t yours to be curious about!” Draco yelled, turning away from Harry. “Are you just mad because now I know your dad hits you?!” Harry fired back.
Draco suddenly turned back to Harry and grabbed his collar as he pushed him up against the wall. “You don’t get to say shit about my family. You don’t know what it’s like to feel like a ghost in your own house.” Draco said through gritted teeth and though Draco was seething with anger something about Harry’s pleading green eyes and tan skin drew him towards Harry like a moth to a flame. “Of course, I’m sure you have no idea what my home is like. You probably have the perfect family who loves and respects each other.” Draco said, his hardened angry exterior softening slowly as the words poured out. “Well, I guess you don’t know anything about my family either, then.” Harry said angrily. Finally Draco let go of Harry and turned away from him to go get dressed for breakfast.
The two boys walked to the great hall without speaking a word to each other and sat down at the Slytherin table across from each other. After a few minutes Ron and Hermione stammered over to the table to say hello to Harry. “Hey, Harry. Sorry again for what I said on the train, I really didn’t mean all those things I said about Slytherins.” Ron said with an apologetic smile. “Don’t worry about it Ron, I know you didn’t mean it.” Harry said and Ron breathed a sigh of relief.
The four of them sat silently for a moment before Harry broke the silence. “Oh, uh guys, this is my roommate Draco.” Harry said, gesturing to the boy sitting across from him. Draco looked at Harry with an upset look on his face. “Hi, I’m Ron!” Ron said excitedly, reaching his hand out to Draco for him to shake. Draco looked at Ron with a look of disgust on his face and Ron slowly pulled his hand away. “Ok, well, bye Harry.” Ron said, waving goodbye to Harry. “Harry, I know Ron said not all Slytherins are bad but maybe that one is.” Hermione whispered in reference to Draco before turning to follow after Ron.
“Just because your dad is a pretentious pureblood asshole doesn’t mean you have to be.” Harry shot at Draco once his friends were out of earshot. Draco leaned closer to Harry and pulled him closer to him by his collar, “Quiet down, just cause you know doesn’t mean the whole house has to know.” Draco whispered. “Ok! Ok!” Harry said, breaking free from Draco’s hold, “Why do you feel the need to pull me in like that all the time? If you keep this up people are going to start thinking we’re a couple.” Harry said sarcastically. Draco’s cheeks turned a light shade of pink for a moment before snapping himself back into reality. “Oh… Sorry.” Draco replied awkwardly, going back to his silent meal.
Draco wasn’t sure why Harry’s comment flustered him so much. He had never considered the idea that someone might think that he was anything other than straight, frankly dating a man had never really been an option in Draco’s head up until this point. He was so used to being told that he would marry a pure blood girl and sire an heir to his father’s house so the idea of being able to choose his own path in life felt… odd… not bad… just… odd.
-A few classes into the day-
Harry walked into potions class happily and took his assigned seat, the class period before this was transfiguration which combined the houses of Gryffindor and Slytherin so he spent most of the period goofing off with Ron much to the dismay of both Professor Mcgonagail and Hermione who were already fed up with the two of them. Harry had rather high hopes for this class as his Papa had told him that both he and Lily were very proficient in that class and Harry hoped that some of their brilliance would pass to him.
Harry took his seat next to a girl with bright blue eyes and long white hair. “Morning.” He greeted her as he placed his bag down. “Hello,” The girl said, staring off in the distance. Harry looked over to see what the girl was looking at but couldn’t find anything of interest. “What are you looking at?” Harry asked with a puzzled look on his face. “Oh, nothing…” The girl said, turning to look at Harry, “I’m Luna, Luna Lovegood, what’s your name?” Luna asked, with a small smile. “I’m Harry, Harry Potter-Black. Nice to meet you Luna.” Harry said, reaching his hand out for Luna to shake. Luna looked at his hand and then back at Harry before giving him a small smile and turning away. Harry smiled back at Luna, slightly confused and turned to face the front of the classroom. Harry couldn’t quite tell what it was about the unusual Ravenclaw girl but something about her made Harry so curious, he wanted to know more about her and how she saw the world in her own special way.
After a few weeks of talking to Luna, the pair of them had become rather close friends and Harry found himself spending most of his time with her in the library reading books from the fantasy section. Though the library was expansive Harry and Luna found themselves feeling limited in their choices of books because while there were shelves upon shelves of books written by wizards there was only a small bookshelf near the back of the library that had muggle books and only a handful of them were fantasy books.
“I wish I’d brought more books with me from home, I’ve already finished all the ones I brought with me.” Harry complained to Luna as they searched for more interesting books. “I brought quite a few books from home as well but I’ve read all of them before, I wish I could read a new book. My parents never really take me to any muggle bookstores so I don’t get the opportunity to read many new muggle books.” Luna explained as she took a book out of her bag. “I’ve read this one more times than I can count.” Luna said, gesturing to the book in her hand. “Which one is that book?” Harry asked with an interested look on his face as he sat down across from Luna. “Alice in Wonderland. It has all sorts of interesting characters like the mad hatter and the Cheshire cat.” Luna explained, handing the book to Harry for him to look at.
Harry looked at the cover with an intrigued look on his face. “I think I’ve seen this one in my uncles’ store a few times but I never read it.” Harry said. “Well, I’ve read it a million times over, you can borrow it if you like.” Luna suggested. “Well, if I’m taking your book then you have to take one of mine too,” Harry said, reaching into his bag and pulling out a book, “here, take this one, it’s the first book in a really long series so it should keep you busy for a while.” Harry explained, handing Luna the book in his hands and placing the book she’d loaned him into his bag. “Percy Jackson.” Luna read the cover, “What’s it about?” Luna asked. “It’s about a boy who finds out that his dad is a Greek god. I think you’ll really enjoy it.” Harry explained.
Later that night Harry wrote the first letter he’d wrote to his Uncle since he got to Hogwarts:
Uncle Moony,
I’ve made a new friend at school, her name’s Luna Lovegood and she loves to read muggle fantasy books just like me! However the library seems to be rather limited when it comes to muggle books especially fantasy books so I was wondering if you could send us some books from the store.
Thanks,
