Ambition: Chapter one

The Sorting

(first person)

You're part of one of the sacred 28 families, the only 28 families who remain pureblooded. In Fact your part of the Noble House of Black.

Your dad just happens to be Sirius Black. The Mass murderer of James and Lily Potter and Peter Pettigrew, who’s currently in Azkaban, for what you think are “good reasons”.

Harry, who you often hang out with, because your dad is his godfather, offered to pretend to be his twin sister while in Hogwarts. This was to prevent the violence, bullying, and stereotyping involved with being part of the Black family. I mean it’s practically a living hell. To be part of that hellish family. Half the Blacks are insane, I mean what’s the saying..”When a Black is born, the gods flip a coin”.

Of course, you gradually exempted Harry’s offer, it took you away from everything, well not everything. One thing you were worried about was turning out like the rest of the crazy family. Harry’s offer was a ticket into newfound happiness and acceptance you could never get as a child.

Backtracking a few years, when you were just a child. You were six when Sirius was taken to Azkaban, which was something that was hard for your little mind the process then. It was something you knew too little about, and you had thought he would come back any day, just to see he never returned.

You were raised by Kreacher, the house elf, until you turned 11 and could go to Hogwarts, since you had no one else. The weasleys happily took Harry in, but no one would take in the daughter of a murderer. You really had no one, as your uncle, Regulus had “supposedly” died, years prior, when he was 16, but his body was never found. You’ve always read that Regulus was the family’s pride and joy, so for him to just kill himself out of the blue was suspicious, too odd, you knew there was something deeper, but what?

It has been 5 years since that day, and you now find yourself at platform 9 ¾, ready to go to hogwarts. It also had been 2 years since you’d last seen Harry; the Weasley’s had convinced him that you were bad news, as sick as it sounds. It hurt that everyone assumed the worst of you just for your last name, and your family line, since you weren’t magically destined to be like them.

The rules were simple enough to get to the train; run face first into the wall, simple right. So that’s what you did, you ran face first into the wall with your eyes closed, terrified- no, petrified, but you got to the other side, just in time. You grabbed your books and headed onto the train to hogwarts.

You went to a random cart with one guy, because the rest were full.

The guy looks at you confused. Confused as to why you're in the cart with him, instead of another girl, or your friends, which he assumes you have.

“Umm..Hello there,” the boy says “Why, may I ask, are you here instead of with friends?”

You reply with “Well…funny story actually, I haven’t been outside of my house until that murderer, what was his name, Sirius….was sent to azkaban.”

”Hm…good to know, I guess. My Name is Cedric…Cedric Diggory, and you?” “Y/n…Y/n Black- I mean Potter” you had replied with.

“Funny, almost sounded like you said your last name was Black.” “Yell, nope, nope it’s not” you replied pretty quickly.

Later on, you and Cedric kept chatting about life, but you still kept saying your Harry’s twin sister, I mean Harry wanted to save you the embarrassment so here you are.

A few hours later, you arrive at Hogwarts for the ceremony, exciting. You don’t really care what house you get, because it doesn’t matter all that much, right? It’s just a stupid house based on things that are only true for a certain amount of time, not your whole life, it doesn’t mean much to you now, does it?

“Are you scared?”

A voice pipes up from behind you, it was just Cedric, again.

“Not really. Does it even matter what house you get anyway?”

You ask

“For some reason; yes. I’d be careful. SLytherin’s are self absorbent, arrogant jerks, like a snake, Ravenclaws and slightly weird, but they make perfect companions and friends, like Ravens, , Gryffindor’s are brave, cunning, smark, but sometimes quirky, like a lion, an Hufflepuffs, are loyal, smart, sometimes pushovers, and people pleasers, not always patient, like a badger. I want to be a Hufflepuff, what about you?”

Not sure yet, but Hufflepuff and Gryffindor sound cool, as does Ravenclaw but I heard that’s one people rarely get on.” you replied to him.

Thankfully when it was your turn to get sorted, you got sorted into hufflepuff, even though it was tied between gryffindor and hufflepuff. Hat stall! You were sitting there for a whole 6 minutes until the sorting hat yelled out “HUFFLEPUFF!”

Though, of course, a stall as long as that made people automatically question if you really belonged in Hufflepuff. You tried your hardest to ignore the stares and questioning looks, but it was rather difficult seeing as all eyes were on you and you were surrounded by whispers. It was one of those moments that you wished you could just be swallowed whole by the ground, yet that would never happen, or maybe it would. You Never know with a school like hogwarts.

Over the next few days you grew closer to Cedric, the guy you met on the train. By now the whispers have died down, but not the stares. People didn’t even know who you were and they were still, very clearly, judging you.

God, your worst concern was people finding out about your real family name, but as of now, you still go by Y/N Potter. Sometimes you can’t help but think of yourself as a freak who got sorted into hufflepuff which 90% of your crazy family resented, they were Slytherins, while your dad was a Gryffindor. Might as well add yourself to the shame of being a family disappointment, yet you’re sure you’d be the worst of the disappointments.
