Spring Cleaning
To Diana it often appeared that the early months of the academic year would go much slower than those which followed. September was akin to the long, dreadful march one would take when ascending to the highest peak of a mountain. Whereas the spring months flew by faster than she could comprehend.
March had a mostly irrelevant itinerary, simply put- it was boring aside from James’ 13th birthday.
April had only one relevant day- April fools. For Diana it wasn’t much of an experience, aside from the fact that Juno had hexed her so that she had to look not too dissimilar to a rabbit the entire day, two front teeth developing into quite the pair of buck teeth, her face contorted, typically turned up nose had turned into a small, twitching bunny snout with a set of whiskers.
She had been dubbed ‘rabbit rabbit’ - after the old superstition surrounding good luck on the first of the month - for the entire following week.
May however had been different than any other month spent at the school. It was her birthday, twelve was not such a significant birthday in her opinion, but to those around her it was an excuse to party.
James had burst down the door of her dorm room to loudly present her with a gift, flanked by his three friends who had tears in their eyes a James’ present burst into fireworks and startled Diana.
“Oh you twit!” She snapped, tossing the box towards his head and causing a rather nasty bruise as the corner hit his forehead “can’t you be serious for even a moment?” She pulled the sheets over her face.
“No. Because that would be identity fraud, wouldn’t it Sirius?” James slung an arm around the ravenette and patted him on the shoulder, faking going in for a kiss.
“Ew! What the hell man!” Sirius squirmed before jokingly closing his eyes and leaning back in- their faces were inches apart before they pulled apart and burst into a laughing fit.
“Can you tosspots leave?” Martha had managed to stir up the confidence, standing on her unfortunately short figure and turning her nose up at them.
“Ooo look at that” Sirius mocked “we’ve got ourselves a-“ Remus quickly elbowed the boy, causing Sirius to scoff and huff. Diana knew it would be something nasty, otherwise Remus wouldn’t have stopped it, and shot Sirius a pointed glare which he did not acknowledge.
“Well-“ Peter awkwardly interjected before ushering his friends to leave “please can we go? I need to find Lockheart so I can get the name of his cologne!” And with that he scurried away, three boys following suit.
After the boys departure, Diana groggily stood up from her bed and rummaged around in her clothing for her school robes.
However she was patted on the back by one of the girls in her room, Caroline.
The girl didn’t say a word, instead she pushed a small box into her palms. “What’s this?” Diana held the box carefully, like a glass ornament.
“Just a little something” Caroline flushed bashfully before sitting back down on her bed. As Diana opened the box she was met with a small white hair ribbon, which fit perfectly with the colour of her chestnut locks.
“Thank you” Diana uttered softly, reaching around and clipping the bow into her hair and looking at it in the mirror.
“Here- from me” Juno grinned, handing Diana a small gift bag, which she opened to reveal an assortment of small perfumes and chocolates, one of which Diana began to spray over her body. It reeked of a sickly sweet vanilla smell, but it was from Juno, so it was special.
Lastly, Martha offered her a chocolate frog. Martha was the most observant out of them, and so it was no surprise she had remembered Diana’s favourite flavour. Dark chocolate with cherries.
Diana thanked Martha, who brought her in for a rather unaccustomed embrace, and then busied herself dressing for the day.
She flipped their communal calendar and scratched out the day, May 11th which Juno had highlighted pink with ‘Di’s B-day’.

As Diana made her way into the great hall alongside her friends, she was somewhat relieved to spot a head of blonde hair stood just before the doors. However she was holding a large sparkly box. “Happy birthday!” She hobbled over, struggling under the weight of the box.
“Oh- what’s this?” Diana reached for the box and Lilith smiled, standing on her toes even in the shiny silver platform boots she had donned.
“It’s something for you! So we can match! Not that you need them but it’s fine” she hopped up and down excitedly.
Diana opened the lid and moved the paper to reveal a pair of sapphire blue glittery platform boots. They were about four, maybe five inches thick and in the light could practically be classed as a threat to the eyesight of those passing by.
“How did you even know my shoe size?”
Lilith grinned “I may have looked at your slippers” Diana was confused “…when?” Before she closed the box again “doesn’t matter- the point is you’ll be taller than that git!” Lilith uttered in distaste.
“Which one? There’s quite a few” Diana responded, sure enough she had her fair share of idiots in mind. Namely her brother after the firework saga this morning.
“Sirius of course! He thinks he’s so cool, imagine his ego being bruised when you’re taller than him!”
