Battle in the department of mysteries.

Veering left, Harry, Hermione, and Neville burst instead into a small, dark, cluttered office and slammed the door behind them.

"Collo-" began Hermione, but before she could complete the spell, the door had burst open again, and the two Death Eaters had come hurtling inside. With a cry of triumph, both yelled, "IMPEDIMENTA!"

Harry, Hermione, and Neville were all knocked backward off their feet. Neville was thrown over the desk and disappeared from view, Hermione smashed into a bookcase and was promptly deluged in a cascade of heavy books. A firebolt leaning against the shelf also fell and hit Hermione on the head. while the back of Harry's head slammed into the stone wall behind him, tiny lights bursting in front of his eyes, and for a moment, he was too dizzy and bewildered to react.

"WE'VE GOT HIM!" yelled the Death Eater nearest Harry. "IN AN OFFICE OFF -"

"Silencio!" cried Hermione, and the man's voice was extinguished. He continued to mouth through the hole in his mask, but no sound came out; he was thrust aside by his fellow.

"Petrificus Totalus!" shouted Harry, as the second Death Eater raised his wand. His arms and legs snapped together, and he fell forward, face-down onto the rug at Harry's feet, stiff as a board and unable to move at all.

"Well done, Ha-"

But the Death Eater Hermione had just struck dumb made a sudden slashing movement with his wand, from which flew a streak of what looked like purple flame that Hermione barely dodged. The flame struck an old, intricately carved pedestal in the corner of the office. The pedestal, which had been placed there for study, began to glow with a strange, ancient light, and the air around it rippled as though reality itself was warping.

Before Hermione could react, a violent vortex of swirling magical energy erupted from the pedestal. The air seemed to distort and warp around her, pulling her toward the center of the magical storm as the vortex sucked everything in the office toward it, the broom going through almost immedieatly.

Panicking, Hermione tried to back away, but she was too close. Seeing Harry being pulled closer, she raised her wand, trying to push everyone away from the vortex, from the pull of the magic threatening to consume them all.

With a sharp crack, Hermione's wand splintered in her grip as she forced too much magic through it. The wave of energy she sent out expanded outward, pushing Harry, Neville, and the Death Eaters back. The force was so great that it sent them crashing into the walls, out of the immediate vicinity of the vortex. Hermione, however, remained far too close, her hand still gripping the broken wand. The vortex intensified, and the pull was too strong for her to resist.

With a final, helpless cry, Hermione was sucked into the swirling storm of magic, everything around her spinning wildly and before she could even register what had happened, everything went dark
